At first I thought the eyepieces wouldn't be wide enough for my wide-set eyes, but amazingly I had to move the things closer together. When without glasses, pop up the eyepiece guards, with glasses make sure these are in the 'stored' position. Using these with glasses on takes a couple of minutes getting used to, but is worth it.
Even close to darkness the binoculars pick up an amazing amount of detail, at the first outing picked up a Common Nighthawk high up in the sky, moving at high speed.
The binoculars are small and lightweight enough, and i love the padded rubber outsides. Very easy to just put this in your backpack for day trips, etc. Though not squishy at all, it feels padded enough to take the occasional tumble from a table, chair or small kids' hands. After an hour or so, it was basically point-and-look for me, having no trouble at all to keep focus on a fast moving animal.
I compared these to a larger, older Nikon (7x50) but am glad i chose this one.
I purchased these for my wife as a birthday present and upgrade over a very old and abused set of Bushnell. After reading many reviews, specs, etc I narrowed it down to these, Alpen Pro 8x42, and a few Vortex models in the same price range. I decided on these because Nikon was the high ratings in consumer guides, product reviews, and Nikon's reputation. My wife and I were not disappointed.
Everything seems perfect with these binoculars. The close focus is about 5-6 feet as opposed to their 8.2ft rating. The design of the housing is comfortable and the rubberized cover is great for gripping when damp (e.g. when you're sweating in the outdoor heat). Focus knob is easy to turn right out of the box, takes about 1.5 turns so following moving objects isn't difficult. The weight is light and balanced so arm fatigue isn't an issue. The eye cups are easy to expand and contract and my father-in-law had no issue using these with glasses on.
The strap included with the binoculars is lacking in comfort and design, but so is every strap I have encountered. We will be purchasing the harness accessory before our next camping trip. That's the only thing bad I can think of about these binoculars.
I give it 5 stars because for the money I think these are hard to beat for the beginner to intermediate birder.
I bought two pairs of these binoculars. They are strong enough to view distant things but not too strong that you can't focus and follow moving subjects. They are not bulky like other binoculars in their class.
These binoculars are used for everything from boating to hiking to wildlife viewing
