ER"4P (Portable) earphones can be used with portable CD, MP3, DVD and other players without requiring an additional amplifier. As compared to the ER"4S, the ER"4P has 10 dB greater output at high frequencies and 13 dB greater output at low frequencies. The higher sensitivity and enhanced bass of the ER"4P have made it the most popular earphone for most uses. The ER"4 MicroPro" earphones are the next best thing to live music, with noise isolation far surpassing that of active noise-canceling earphones. The ER"4s require NO batteries, and can be plugged into any audio source. Their external noise exclusion -- 35 dB with 3-flange eartips, 42 dB with foam eartips -- allows you to hear the full dynamic range of recordings without having to play them at unnaturally high and unsafe levels. The ER-4S earphone has an equalized high frequency response. Most stereo recordings have been equalized, electronically or by choice of microphone type and placement, to sound good with mainstream "good" loudspeakers in typical living rooms. Several studies have been conducted dealing with the subject of loudspeaker response as affected by the listening room. The figure to the right shows the frequency response of loudspeakers considered to be "flat" in five studies. Even a loudspeaker with a perfectly flat power output exhibited a room response 4-10 dB down at 10 kHz, relative to the midband. The ER-4S has been designed with a gradual roll off in the high frequencies similar to that of the curve labeled MCK, which represents a compromise choice. The ER-4S is well suited for all types of stereo recording reproduction. Etymotic Was First Etymotic Research introduced the ER"4B and ER"4S earphones in 1991. The ER"4 series earphones are in-the-ear, high-fidelity transducers developed specifically to combine flat frequency response with isolation from external noise. The isolation of outside sound makes it possible to listen at reduced levels, which prevents ear overload distortion and hearing damage from excessive volume levels. ER Is Still The Leader Other in-ear earphone designs have tried to match the ER"4 MicroPro earphones, but not one is comparable to the high fidelity, reference-quality sound or the isolation of the ER"4. The word "Etymotic" means "true-to-the-ear," and ER"4 MicroPro earphones produce the highest sound quality of any earphone available.

These things are great. The detail is great. You can pick out any instrument. The highs and the base are excellent as well. The foam plugs are very comfortable you can ware them all day if you want and they block out most noises.

I am very satisfied with these earbuds. I cannot find anything negative to say about them. For the price...unbeatable.

"There's plenty of ...

There's plenty of reviews on epinions and cnet to decide if the ER-4Ps are for you. To summarize, the clarity and isolation they provide will impress, and the self-proclaimed "live music" dynamics response just might be true.

But for someone trying to get prevalent bass out of these with an ipod, you will have to be very clever, setting your EQ presets, volume levels and position of the phones themselves in your ears, all taylored to your kind of music. All while trying to avoid going deaf from the high frequencies. It IS possible to get good bass and tamed treble though! Here's a hint for ipod users: The "Small Speakers" EQ setting and a little extra volume will take you far!

Also be careful removing and replacing silicone or foam flanges. You can pull the little filters out partially, and this will make them sound like they suddenly lost all of their volume. Pressing them against a flat surface with the flanges off will fix this.

Overall, for use with an ipod, it will take some doing, but are well worth the price and the effort to get them sounding good.

Let me join the choir in singing the praises of this excellent set of headphones. Every review I read prior to purchase described in detail the excellent audio quality, reponsiveness, output, range and fidelity provided by this set, and I am here to agree with that assessment. The sound quality is superb, with perfectly clear highs, mids and lows. Add to this the noise cancellation inherent in the design and you are treated to an ocean of sound without any outside interference. The only thing missing is an equalizer to allow more control, but listening to cd quality recordings is astounding; you are treated to the closest representation of live-quality music. I use this set with my Ipod Shuffle. I recommend these earphones wholeheartedly.

Best of the Best

Previous to purchasing the Etymotic Research Er4p High Fidelity Earphone I was sceptical that any earbud could compete with my HD650 headset. My problem with headphones, however, was that they weren't portable enough and somewhat uncomfortable when sitting on my deck soaking up the rays. I decided I needed earbuds and researched the web for 50 hours to find the BEST earbuds. I set the Er4P as the gold standard without ever testing them. Much to my surprise, the Er4P was superb and a close second to the HD650. They are very comfortable and the sound quality, especially the enhanced bass, was excellent. I highly recommend the Er4P for anyone looking for a complement to their iPods. It's a winner for the person looking for the latest and greatest sound experience. It is well worth the money, despite it's relatively high price. Go for it--you won't be sorry.
