Works great for on-the-go workers. I keep it folded in my backpack (small footprint is idea for small pockets) and it lasted about 2 years. After the first wore out, I bought another! note that I do not think that Phillips makes this model anymore!

Great for the student...but will they last?

I'm not an audiophile, so I can't really speak to the sound quality. Just comparing it to the Sennheiser MX400 I was using before, it seems less heavy on the bass- and mid-ranges, more heavy on the treble-range, but at the same time, manages to achieve a more "open/concert hall" quality.
More what I was concerned with when I bought these pair was the neatness and the comfort. I liked that they folded (and they do fold very well, the feature is well-implemented) and that the cord can wrap neatly around them (having to unknot your headphone cord is just too unsexy).
After owning the Koss KSC7, I was also concerned about comfort, never realizing before that headphones could actually give you unbearable headaches after a mere half hour. I'm very happy to report that the Philips HS-820 are infinitely more comfortable, and I've yet to notice any discomfort at all, even after hours of wearing them.
The covering on the speaker parts threw me when I first got them, but they're comfortable and don't seem to possess any negative qualities. I do wish these headphones came in black, though.
