I am very pleased with my new Denon Ahp372k headphones. These are lightweight, over-the-ear headphones that fold for easy, compact storage in a backpack or other tote bag. The design has a sturdy feel to it, with a nicely-padded headpiece. The unit is comfortable to wear, with soft padding on the earpieces. It doesn't squeeze your head or ears, yet provides a good seal to help keep the sound quality up. Minor quibble: The wires from the earpieces to the jack are rather thin, which takes away from the overall look of quality. However, this has no effect on the sound quality, it's simply a look/feel issue. On the plus side, the cable is short, and Denon provides a free extension cable to bring the overall length back to the 6' standard length. The intention was to keep the weight of the cable down as much as possible, because the phones are intended for portable use. The sound quality is quite good. Crisp highs blend smoothly with an open, airy midrange to produce excellent presence and soundstage imaging. The bass is great, fat and full without being boomy or muddy. Percussion instruments sound lifelike, and brass instruments are shiny without blaring. Acoustic instruments like guitars sound natural with full rendition of the steel of the strings and resonance in the body. Voices also are rendered quite naturally, with clear distinction between similar sounds ("s" vs. "sh" sounds for example). I compared the Ahp372ks head-to-head with a pair of Sony MDR-V300s, which are similar in construction and price. I used a "Y" jack to compare them using the same sound source, program material, and volume and tone control settings. There is absolutely no comparison; the Denon made the Sony sound like kids' toys with muddy bass and a gauzy, indistinct treble. The Denons play at a very adequate volume level with my MP3 player (a Creative ZEN 16Gb), and are able to produce quite good sound from it as well. For this comparison I used my computer with a standard (nuthin' fancy) sound card and, while the sound quality was slightly better than through the MP3 player, that is easy to understand. Overall, the Denon are a very good choice for portable use. They also represent good value for the money; especially at the price that Beach Audio sells them!
