The worst printer I've ever owned

By tshirtninjafairy from Las Vegas, NV on 02/19/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This printer is literally the worse printer my business has ever had. 1) It curls the pages so badly when printing that when you flip the pages over to print on the other side (we can't do double sided prints automatically on some of our programs) the printer only feeds three or so sheets in and jams. The "option" for less page curling in the printer settings does absolutely nothing but frustrate the user because they knew this was a problem before they put out the printer. 2) This is the only printer where it can't eject pages when done printing nicely. They are all messed up and takes a while to collate. There is a difference of about 4" between pages. The little grey thing I think that is supposed to keep that from happening only causes the printer to jam. 3) The MP tray is the cheapest thing I've ever bought for over $500. You can only fit about 25 sheets in it, it's difficult to get them loaded right because of the cheap tray. Most of the time you end up with pages bent up at the front, so it jams the printer when they get fed through. 4) This printer jams, no matter what, at least every 25 pages. And jams in the back. So it tells you to wait 10 mins to let it cool down every time it jams. I don't know about other businesses, but it's extremely en-cumbersome to have to turn this heavy printer all the way around to do the four steps you must do to clear out jams.... every 25 pages. This printer should not jam this much. 5) The scanning application for the desktop is completely unreliable. We have simply decided to just scan everything to a usb. What a complete waste. 6) There is constantly random flakes of ink on every print we make. 7) The default scan setting is for 100dpi and there is no way to change this without having to change it every time we scan something. Who even uses 100dpi? 8) While all this ^ is going on, there is an incessant beeping sound that my whole store has learned to hate this sound. It beeps, loudly, at least six times every time this machine runs out of paper, jams, completes a task, or completely randomly... 9) I have more menu functions on my telephone, on my inkjet printer with a tiny screen than I do on this printer. For such a large LCD screen there should be way more options for fine tuning this printer. Because of all of this, this printer has been named the Struggle. Every time things have to get printed we cringe, and now printing double sided things for the store is the most hated task. The only reason this printer hasn't been returned is because we had to return the other horrible printer we bought from brother and they wouldn't trade it out twice. This one was $200 more. Terrible products. I'd pay good money for a decent printer. The last laser printer we had was a dell that cost less money and ran my store great for six years. We decided to switch brands because the brother had a fax machine. Horrible choice.

Not so hot

By WMJV from Coldwater, MI on 12/24/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This machine takes absolutely forever to spool up and pages are lost if one closes the file before the printing is completed. Cartridge low warning shows up very early on and pops up and has to be dismissed several times daily while waiting for that particular cartridge to reach it's end.

I am finally able to print quality professional type brochures at the office!!! So much quicker and easier than other different brand machines I have worked for. Speediness with quality has been a delight. No crooked printing as the paper slides in properly every time.

Good unit when it works

By Slydell from Columbus, OH on 07/22/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The black & white and color printing seems to work well almost all of the time. It is the strength of this unit. Copying also works well as long as you are not using the automatic feeder to do duplex copying. It has a difficult time either lining the page up with the scanner or determining the proper size. Anything larger than 8X11 is often cropped. The same holds true for scanning and faxing. It is better when only doing a single side. I've had to take some documents to work in order to get them scanned properly. The biggest issue I've had is scanning to my PC or my laptop. It often loses the connection and I had to reboot or mess with setting for it to find them again. I called Brother one time about it. They couldn't fixed it and blamed it on my router. I fixed the problem by turning of the printers WAN and then turning it back on. Overall we are happy with the unit because printing and single sided operations are our primary usage.

Great printer

By kl2014 from MIchigan on 07/18/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I wanted a home color laser printer and did a lot of research before buying this one. It was a little more money than what I had planned on spending for a home printer, but I have no regrets. It works great. Easy to use and great copies. The best all in one color laser for the money. So much better than a color ink jet...no color ink carts that dry out from little usage (most home printing is B&W). Color laser is more affordable to use then color ink jet.

Better than the MFC-9840CDW it replaced

By LEEMC from Stillwater, OK on 07/15/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Double side scan, extra capacity feeder tray, print speed, PC interface, noise level, standby power consumption, and digital control pad are all enhancements over previous model owned. Very happy with the MFC-9840CDW up to the point it failed, way out of warranty period, and could not be repaired. Part that failed was not considered to be a expected failure component and was not available. After considerable effort, and written letters to Brother Industries, LTD, chairman and executive board of directors, Brother provided a new printer as a replacement, at no cost. This is proof. at least to me, that the executive officers are avid believers in the standards of quality and customer service they advertise on their websites.

Bottom Line:

This multifunction printer is about as good as you could expect. No failure or other problems during constant use during the first two years. My only minor criticism would be that the first page takes longer to start printing. Customer support is excellent.

Great Little Workhorse Printer

By Mick from Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania on 07/02/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the MFC 9970cdw and am very pleased with the printer. It is actually a great printer, somewhat compact, not too heavy, and very easy to use. The color is really clear. The cartridges cost a bit more, but are worth the extra cost because the cartridges have a higher print capacity. I did not go wrong when I purchased this printer.

Probably the WORST purchase ever!

By Pegi from Hoiston, TX on 06/25/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Made of flimsy material. Stops for no reason requiring frequent reboot of printer and computer. Very slow, never near advertised printing time. Calling customer service usually advising deleting info and reinstall. Recent software update caused major issues with scanner feature. Would never ever pitch see a Brother product again.

Toner Disappointment

By TeeShirt from Greensboro, North Carolina on 06/21/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm very disappointed with the toner life. I don't think I got more than 150 pages per (yellow) toner. The printer works well when the low toner light isn't flashing. I can't recommend this product to friends because of the toner problems.

Good - But Beware

By Cristina from Columbia City Indiana on 06/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I like the printer in general... so far. I've only had it a couple weeks. However.... I work from home and brought my job with me when I moved from Texas to Indiana. I had to upgrade my electrical system in the house we just bought because the pull on this printer is 10 amps. There was only a 15 amp service in my office and with my computer, dual monitors, ceiling lights and ceiling fan running all at the same time, everything would dim when the printer started. I had to upgrade to a 20 amp service in this room to handle the pull. Also... I remote in to our TX office through the internet on a full time basis. The program that I use during the remote session does not recognize this printer so I have to email everything to myself so I can print it. Ugh! I understand not everyone would feel these same issues.

I had a Brother MFC-9450cdn for years prior to purchasing this one. I actually wore out the old printer. This one feeds beautifully, scans both sides at once, prints fast and has great quality and is an overall great purchase. It's a little large for a home-based business, but is certainly worth the money. By all means buy it!

We replaced a Brother MFC 7420 machine for the color capabilities needed for communications and invoicing with added duplex and wireless capabilities. Fabulous Printer, Bad OCR software

By Shorty1 from Undisclosed on 02/27/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had my MFC-9970CDW for over a week now. I love the printer. Print quality is excellent. Setup was not too difficult and the on-screen programming screen is very logical and easy. Everything works great about it except for the Presto Pagemanager software for OS X. It isn't very good at all, to put it mildly. It would be a good organizer for documents, but for OCR, frankly it stinks. English page recognition is just so-so, and for Spanish, it's not even usable for the documents I've tried. For a printer this expensive, Brother really should consider including better software for OCR on Mac OS X, and there are good ones out there. I'll probably end up spending more for OCR software from somebody else since this is a feature important to me. If it hadn't been for this software which was bundled, I'd have given this printer 5 stars. It also doesn't support AirPrint, which it REALLY should, but using Brother's iPrint, it makes up for the problem mostly, except for the fact that it doesn't support Pages, Numbers and Keynote printing which are really basic on iOS and you have to use a workaround. Brother really should update the firmware to support AirPrint which is so basic these days. I've also seen some reviews complain about photo printing quality. At the highest resolution, I think it prints photos quite acceptably for a laser. If you don't print lots of color, with a laser you also don't have to worry about the cartridges drying out like they do with an inkjet. This Printer is replacing an old Brother B&W laser I've used for 10 years with no problems, and an HP multifunctional which seemed to get unsupported with Mavericks and was really the reason I looked for a replacement. Despite the two shortcomings I've found, I really love this printer, print quality and ease of use.

Love It

By Tweet from Green Bay, WI on 02/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second Brother Printer that I have purchased. My first printer is the exact same model. We needed an additional laser printer in the office and I absolutely loved my first one so I ended up purchasing the exact same one for my sales staff. The only downfall with it is that it is a bit difficult to get set up. For my first printer I was running Windows 7 and I had difficulty setting that up. With my new printer I am running Windows 8 and again I had some difficulty with the setup. I ended up calling Brother support for help and they were able to get me up and running.

Love this all-in-one

By quadwheel from New York State on 01/14/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned a brother MFC-665CW for years (which still works great) but needed something that can print duplex and handle larger print jobs. This MFC-9970CDW cost a lot more than I wanted to spend, but since my other MFC lasted many years I figured it would prove to be worth the expense over time. This MFC gave me everything I wanted and more, it doesn't only print duplex it also scans duplex! Love it!!! This printer came with toners which ran out within the first three weeks, but I like how it notified me when it was running low and then when it needed changing, which gave me ample time to get the replacement toners. The last page printed just as perfect as the first. I am a very happy customer.

Impressive

By TheBear from California on 01/05/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I usually do not write reviews, but wanted to give credit to Brother for this All In One machine. I use the Brother All In One for mostly printing and scanning. I also use for monthly checks and envelopes printing. So where do I begin? 1) INSTALLATION: The most impressive thing was how easy it was to install the software and actually work!! Had an HP printer before and will not go back. On my recommendation, my Mom got a Brother printer and even she found it easy to work. I did have a minor technical issue for advanced features and technical support was "outstanding" and US based representative. 2) PRINTING: I am happy with quality, both black and white and color. Nice thing it the double sided printing capability. Comes in handy when needed. 3) SCANNING: This is probably the main reason I like this printer. I scan all my working documents and back them up to the cloud. So my filing cabinet and now shrinking in size!!! I also scan my receipts for my bookkeeper and tax purposes, no more boxes and do not have to worry about ink disappearing after a few years. The flexibility of scanning options and which folder to put them in makes this very convenient and can also be advanced if needed. 4) CHECKS AND ENVELOPES After I fired HP about 5 years ago, my replacement was a Dell Laser black and white printer. My only complaint with Dell Laser printer was is the FEEDER DID NOT WORK. I prefer using the feeder to load the checks and envelopes into the printer instead of opening the tray (personal preference). I called Dell technical support several times and they could not fix it. So guess what they suggest? Buying a new printer! I think it's Dell salespeople pretending to be technical support, just to make a sale. I was tempted but did not take the bait. The feeder on the Brother machine works very well. Easy to feed and even tells you which side up to put the checks and envelope. The only draw back I could tell you are two things: 1) it's the largest All In One I have ever purchase (home office use), so make sure you check the dimensions of the space you want to put it. 2) The glue on the envelope melts a little going thru the laser printer and slightly sticks together. A minor annoyance since I only do a few envelopes a month. For heavy users, consider the tape envelopes (no licking required), I think this should help the matter. To summarize, I am very impressed with Brother from product, customer service and support.

Great features/speed but build quality ??

By InsuranceOffice from Louisville, KY on 11/20/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a huge Brother fan and have owned several of their products over the years. Bought the top of the line 9970CDW and have not been disappointed in its functionality. We do a good bit of scanning and this machine is really fast compared to the 8860DN we now use as backup. Print speed seems to be as advertised. Color quality is OK - about what you would expect from laser. Noticed the difference in build quality from the 8860 as soon as we pulled out the paper tray and lifted the ADF cover. No problems so far after several months and thousands of pages through scan and print, but only time will tell if it will last. Feel like we have to be a little more gentle with this unit compared to the old 8860 workhorse that is still kicking. Overall, would definitely recommend based on functionality and previous experience with Brother products.

Happy with MFC 9560cdw

By DAPx from Beaumont, CA on 11/03/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've owned Brother MFC units before and have always been pleased with the products. This was no exception. The print quality is good and I'm happy with the features of the machine. Printing is crisp and clear, color is good. It takes about 16-20 seconds to print the first page, which can be a negative for some people. I don't printout hundreds of pages per day, and waiting the 20 seconds for the first page is not an issue for me. The machine is a little large, but seems comparable to other color mfc's. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quality laser printer, and reasonably priced.

The Best Multi-Functional Laser Printer ever

By Pandabear9 from Houston, TX on 10/28/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I work at home and I decided to upgrade from an injet all-in-one to a laser. I was tired of buying the expensive inkjet cartridges, the slowness of the printer, and lack of duplex printing functions. I researched printers for months on all the major sites looking at the functions, reviews, price, etc. I decided on purchasing a Brother MFC-9970CDW because of the functionality, the high reviews and the affordable price. I have been so pleased with this all-in-one. I know that price/page is cheaper than with an inkjet, it's faster, it's easier and I love the duplex printing on both sides of the paper so I can conserve the amount of paper that I use. I'm sure I haven't even touched a small percentage of what this machine can actually do, but I am so impressed.

Not cutting it for Small Business

By DavidK from Nashville, TN on 07/23/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I work as tech support for a small unit of a much larger education enterprise. This MFC-9970 was purchased to support about 25 users. Some of us spread out in a large campus building (thus on different subnets). There are significant issues with getting Control Center and scanning to work across diff subnets (diff network segments). Also, it wants you to replace toner cartridges way to early, and you will have problems if your large enterprise forces you to buy non-Brother (Cheap) cartridges. Be warned if your environment is similar. (I will update if I can depending on resolution of networking issues).

Excellent printer

By Anonymous from Boston, MA on 06/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had this printer for several months. The only problem I had was getting documents scanned in to my computer for emailing to clients. I finally figured that out and now I am totally satisfied. I have read about the curling of the paper and that sometimes is a problem as is the envelopes curling when they come through the printing process. My favorite function is the automatic duplex printing which is hard to find on other high priced printers. Love this printer.

Great Unit

This is an easy to use printer, copier, fax, and scanner. My main complaint would be that the photo and graphic quality varies when printing. Sometimes it's very good, other times not so much. I bought this after buying a Brother black and white laser printer that I was impressed with. I would have no problem recommending the Brother MFC-9970CDW.

I have had my 9970 for about 2 months. Print quality and speed are great. However, the pages come out with a curl to them which is annoying. The cartridges are supposed to give you 6000 copies in black. That would be more than a case of paper. The yield is more like 3500 to 4000 copies per cartridge. Color copies of copies come out dark.

Duplexing Jams Constantly

By CSCC from Undisclosed on 03/20/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The is printer has nice features but unfortunately, my office has concluded that we cannot use the duplexing feature. When duplexing, it jams repeatedly in the rear of the machine, then requires 10 minutes to cool down. Even after allowing the 10 minutes to elapse, it will immediately jam again if we try to print duplex. Sometimes after jamming while duplexing, it will also jam when we try to print single-sided after the original jam occurred.

Better than expected

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I must admit I did read a few reviews that were critical of the Brother MFC-9560CDW All-in-One printer and was a little skeptical about buying this printer. It does everything as advertised and I am extremely please with this product. Before this purchase I had a colored inkjet All-in One printer and a laser printer for my black and white copies. I would not have known about this product if it were not for my computer technician who recommended I buy it.

Great All In One printer, but I could not get the software properly installed on my older PC which has Windows 7 installed. Therefore, I can only use the print functions except the Scan to PDF function. I use a MAC to scan to overcome this problem. The scan work on newer PCs.

one MASSIVE problem

By Anonymous from New Jersey on 02/23/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

i generally find that brother products are well made. when i decided to go laser, this was my first choice. however, i have found a huge problem with this device and it absolutely decimates my happiness with this product. the WIFI is only B/G. why is this a problem? i don't need it to run at N speeds. however, i need it to NOT cause my network to slow down to 54mbps just because it only supports B/G. unacceptable. this product is too new to only be B/G compatible. considering the miniscule size of the radio in my 2007 laptop which supports N, there is no reason this device should lack this feature. total fail.

Got this printer after previous brother MFC had problems with leaking color toner and splotches on the printouts. Problems with printing on card stock

By Sparky from Ball Ground, GA on 02/06/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

We purchased this color laser all in one for our small business. Mainly to print our menu's on card stock. The first batch we printed worked fine and ever since we get "out of paper" after each menu prints. There is paper in the paper tray it just seems to jam. We have the setting on "thick paper" because there isn't a card stock setting on this printer. I've not been able to print in duplex mode. When the printer prints it is great quality and on normal paper we don't have issues. But it sure makes it hard to keep menus in our poboy shop.

Very Pleased So Far

By Elise from Northern California on 02/05/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The printer seems like a very durable printer construction-wise. It reminds me of the original laser HP printers that were very solid and workhorses that never died. The print quality is very clear and it fires up very quickly and prints faster than our old Brother printer which was only a few years old but started having issues over the past year not receiving and printing faxes when we got them from customers or sales reps. So far, very pleased!

Best Purchase ever for small business in 2013

By Billy2013 from Charlotte, NC on 01/22/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been a customer of brother machines products for a few years. I operate a small insurance agency and so a reliable printer is very important to our business. When it was time to upgrade our old machine, I didn't consider any other brand. I choose the all in one color machine and I am very happy with it. Although it was on the pricey side I know it will be worth it in the long run.

Good for a Home Business

By rbarts from Undisclosed on 01/09/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The printer is bulky, but works well for a home business. It's particularly nice that it has wifi so computers can be used from anywhere in the home. Print quality is excellent. Sometimes there is a delay from when the print is issued until when the printer starts printing. This could be a wifi issue (but not likely given the speed of my network).

Excellent SOHO printer

By luap from Los Angeles, CA on 01/09/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer does everything I expected it to do, and then some. The best part is that it "just works" - we use a combination of Mac, Windows and Linux machines, plus an Android device or two, and they all print flawlessly. Setup was fairly straightforward. The only challenge I had was that initially I set it up for wireless networking, and any time the router was reset the printer would lose its connection and force me to go through the setup again. I changed to a wired connection, and no problems since. We have a second one in our business office, and it seems happy with wireless. Could be a recent firmware update corrected that issue. The first "sample" set of toner cartridges yielded about 1,700 total pages. I purchased the "high yield" replacement set and am now beyond 10,000 pages and going strong. I've also scanned hundreds of documents and sent a few dozen faxes. I knocked off a star for two reasons: first, the paper tray capacity is far too low for a machine of this calibre. Having to pay extra to load more than a couple hundred sheets at a time is silly. Second, we've had troubles trying to feed heavyweight paper, envelopes and the like through the front feeder. The only paper jams experienced have been while feeding non-standard paper this way. Other than that, it's awesome.

A few kinks

By DSPBrandt from Midlothian, Virginia on 01/08/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Overall, the machine handles the workload. Color scanning great. A few things I don't like: 1. If you have paper in the feeder tray or receiving tray, each page that comes out pushes the other papers out of the machine and onto the floor. 2. The fax function is extremely slow whether you scan and fax or fax straight. My old plain machine was much faster.

Great work printer.

By MSEBEK from TEMPLE, TX on 01/07/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an AWESOME business/work printer. Fast, crisp, and quality printing. The only poor quality of this printer is for photos. It is awful when it comes to printing on photo paper. Pictures come out smudged and to color of people's skin tones is way off. I had to resort to printing pictures on plain paper until I went out and bought a separate photo printer. This printer also eats toner. I use WAY more toner with this printer than expected. Even on the economy printing mode.

not bad but not great

By 9970allinone from Scranton PA on 01/04/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The features on this machine are very nice but the execution of some of them is weak. The scanner renders documents that are out of focus. The paper port in the back restricts where I can locate the machine in my office. This means that the machine takes up a lot of space that it wouldn't have to take up if the port was located somewhere else. Unless I use the port in the back, the machine squishes envelopes and they look horrible. The instruction manual is poor so my attempts at setting up the fax machine have been frustrating and baffling. The color is not correct; not even close to what it should be and so dark its hard to make out images. Brother's fix was to reload all of the drivers but that didn't work. The good points are that it offers a lot of features inexpensively, it makes very clear copies quickly, it prints well (except for the color being off) and its compact.

Bottom Line:

the brother mfc-9970cdw is a very good machine. best feature for me is printing on both sides automatically. very good printouts. downside is it uses too much toner - and the toner is not cheap. i guess this is the same for all color lasers. scanning is kind of limited, on my other scanner, you could adjust dpi - haven't found that on this one. i would recommend this machine if you don't care about toner cost, but then again, toner is expensive for all color laser printers.

The printer does good copy & printing in both color and B&W. My complaints are: (1) it is very noisy and can be hard to talk on the phone when printing. The Very Best All-In-One

By ImagemakerRob from Philadelphia, PA on 12/26/2012

Bottom Line:

My MFC-9560CDW does it all. To me the most important feature of the MFC-9560CDW is that it is a network device. Any PC on our local area network can print, copy or FAX with it. I especially like the double-sided color copying and Faxing feature. The MFC-9560CDW is very convenient because it can scan documents directly to my PC as a file or images. The MFC-9560CDW has every feature to handle every need.

Solid Performer

By Tima from Arizona on 12/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After searching for about six months looking for a color laser printer with duplex and wireless capability, we found this gem. We have had it for 7 months now and it fully supports all of our home based business needs. We have yet to have a single issue, not even a paper jam yet. We print about 200 pages a week. The color quality supports all of our needs. Speed is not our highest need, but this printer does pretty good on large volume print jobs. The interface took a little getting used to, but once we figured out how to scan to thumb drive, all else fell into place. We love this printer!

Brother MFC-9970CDW

By RickRockRack from St. Petersburg, FL on 12/26/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The printer works fine, but I am shocked and deeply disappointed that Brother still does not have a Windows 8 Driver. Effectively, all the printer can do is print and FAX. It cannot scan!! This is a ridiculous issue to have outstanding a full 3 months after the release date of Windows 8 (Brother had to know the Windows 8 spec at least 6 months before W8 was released). How can a product be recommended if it provides only 2/3rds of the functionality advertised?

I found this printer to do everything I needed. It is far improved over the MFC-8870DW which I consider to be junk. The wireless connection was flawless and easy to set up. This laser printer is fast in color or B&W. The fax and scan functions work seamlessly with my PC. The duplex feature also saves a lot of paper. This is by far the best printer I have ever owned! Capabilities are great and the prints are awesome! It also costs me so much less than the inkjet printers I have owned in the past. I always stayed away from lasers because of the cartridge costs, but they cost much less than all the cartridges I had to buy for an inkjet when you figure the cost per sheet. Highly recommend this printer for anyone! Brother has hit the ball out of the park with this one!

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Does a great job with printing both for quality and speed. Copying and fax are also fine. Has been very reliable for nearly a year. My one complaint is that the toner reads low after far fewer copies than advertised. When you are forced to change, as the toner low warnings are persistent and a bit of a hassle to override, there is clearly plenty left in the cartridge. There is no simple way to tell when the cartridges are getting low and they are very, very expensive to replace.

Excellent with minor improvements

By Mark4Brother from South Jordan, UT on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The 4-in-1 works fabulously. Scans very quickly, even both sides at the same time. The color print is crisp and bright. Fax to file image saves paper. The only things I would improve: 1) less paper curl (even using the maximum "less paper curl" option is not enough). 2) Larger input tray--if you copy, fax or scan more than 24 sheets, some sheets tend to get pulled through together.

Best small business multi function machine

By Oldconfusedguy from Morgan Hill, CA on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

1. Unpacking and setup of the MFC-9970 was easy - especially compared to other similar class machines I've unpacked and setup. 2. Workstation software installed properly on WinXP, Win7-64 and WinSrvr SB. 3. Scanning to PC works well - all PC's appeared in MFC control panel. Scanning via network is fast. 4. 2nd paper tray requires virtually no installation. Lift the printer up, place the second tray on the bottom, put the printer on top of the second tray, and it is installed and working. We use the second tray for 8.5X11 - holds a full ream. We use the top tray for 8.5X14 legal. 5. Printing is fast, with accurate colors and shading. 6 reams and still no paper jam - good paper handling. 6. The printer also handles multiple jobs quite well - no reboots. Only two negatives; (i) the output "hole in the middle" is not well designed - difficult to get 8.5X11 paper out of the stacker, and (ii) it is not possible to simultaneously operate both wifi and wired network interfaces. We had to make a choice, and finally settled on the wired interface because scanned file transfers are much faster. Unfortunately, there are two workstations that can only be connected via WiFi, so the printer is not available to them.

Pleased with purchase, with a few reservations

By Parsons from Cleveland, OH on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had the printer for just over one year and am generally happy with the purchase. I probably print 20-30 pages per day on average. Positives: Easy set up. No maintenance problems. Print quality is generally good (more on that in a moment). Remote operation is a breeze (printing and scanning.) Toner life is OK. Printer speed is just fine for my needs (home use, not business.) Negatives are not huge, but I would note these: paper curls (this is noted by many other reviewers.) Color quality is OK but not great. The plastic frame and components (such as paper and toner drawers) are thin gauge and make me nervous about their long term survival.

GREAT printer!

By JAZM from Queen Creek AZ on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Expensive but worth it! I was so tired of fighting ink cartridges on my inkjet. I wanted to be a responsible citizen by using 'refilled' cartridges, but companies have made that very difficult by putting chips in their cartridges to recognize 'non-original' ones. In my case, on two printers I had to use 'new and brand specific' inks or they made the printer not work properly. I bought the Brother MFC-9560W laser printer to be able to print longer without refills. The color quality is not quite as good as my inkjet, but the tradeoff is worth it because all else about it is wonderful! I have not used the faxing option because my phone is through my cable company and will not permit faxing.

MFC-9560CDW

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the Brother all in one after my HP all in one finally gave up the ghost after 8 years of mostly great performance. I looked at the MFC-9560CDW (It is the first Brother product that I haw owned) because it offered more features that the HP model for about 2/3ers the price. The other nit I have with HP is they stop supporting the printer software after about 2 years and they want you to purchase a new machine. Back to the MFC-9560CDW. It seems to work great. Quite, much less mechanical than the HP. Easy to use. Once I got the software and network settings dialed in. The FAX function can actually answer my phone, even with the answering machine on.

Excellent printer, best value

By Leee from Tucson, AZ on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Overall I'm very happy with this printer. It prints high quality color, black and white, has a good scanner. The only down side is the software, which doesn't run well on Windows 7. The always-on software monitor caused my computer to lock up until I disabled it. And the Brother scanner software ceased to function one day, not even Brother tech support could get it to run. So they told me to use the PaperPort software with the scanner, which works just as well.

Great machine, but...

By RobW from La Grange, IL on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am unaware of way to check toner levels. It would be nice if copies were ejected a little further out of the machine so you don't have to reach quite so far inside and since the curved side of the paper faces down is sometimes not easy to get hold of the copy. But I like the speed, the scan quality, the duplexing, the output, and the ability to scan to other applications, i.e., fax, file, e-mail, etc. Also, the price was right. Overall a good value.

I have really enjoded this prints for most functions. One of the thing that I don't like is the fact that the "Prepare New Toner Cartridge" message comes up and stays on for MONTHS before the toner is actually gone. If you change the cartridge when this message first comes on you will be only using HALF of the toner. The high price of these cartridges means that you have to use every drop on toner. The other problem that I have found may not actaully be a printer problem as maybe a driver problem. This is the when printing a picture, I can't use the 3" by 5" photo cards. When I use the 4" by 6" cards the picture only covers about half of the card. The last problem was that I had Nuance Paperport 14 on my system when I installed the printer. The installation program didnot check for Paperport, but just overwrote it with an old outdated copy of Paperport. The installation program needs to be updated to check for software on the computer

Good Quality Color and B&W copies

By TNconsumer from Johnson City TN on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I like the MFC-9970CDW. It is my third brother printer. It delivers good quality documents, copies and scans. It is the best scanner I have tried when used in tandem with third party scanner programs. It is a little noisy when in operation.

The MFC-9970CDW has many great features and the print quality is fantastic. The toners do not last as long as other machines our office uses making this machine more costly to use in the long run.

Great Priinter

By marty0457 from union, NJ on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After going through many multifuntion printers, it is a relief to finally find one that is very reasonably priced, yet is one of the best mulit-function printers I have ever used. This is used in my business for basic copying, but is pushed to the limits for brochure printing and duplex printing/copying. All is done flawlessly. I highly recommend this printer for someone in need of this type of printer. If I could name anything that needs improvement, I would have to say that it could use a better way to monitor toner usage in real time. The only way you know that toner is going low, is when you get an notice sayng its running out, and time to change. I would like to see something better in this regard, although this is very minor to me. Enjoy

Very Good, Not Outstanding

By Chris32137 from Palm Coast, FL on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We got this color laser printer for my wife's real estate business. It does great black and white copies and "OK" color copies. Speed is fine. I was disappointed that after an easy set up, wirelessly, it "un-set" itself up and we had to go through some hassles to deal with it. Another annoyance was that it came with Paperport 12 and I already had Paperport 14 on my system, but when it set up, it didn't detect that and I ended up with a confused and conflicted system. The cost of buying a new toner cartridge was a negative surprise. I am a major fan of Brother products and have used them for years. I have had perhaps 5 MFC's over the years and will continue to buy, most likely. This review is not intended to be a negative one. It's positive and I would purchase the product again and recommend it, as well. Just a few annoyances and surprises and "OK, not great" color reproduction.

Great step-up

By pencilpusher from Walnut Creek, CA on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had an earlier Brother B&W MFC, then a color laser, and they all served me (us) well, in a home office environment. But the 9970CDW is truly the greatest ever. I was leery of giving up the USB connection to go wireless, but the Brother tech walked me through it and it's been faultless. The scanning capability has turned into a boon as a business application, getting hard copy documents into clients hands almost instantly.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is indeed, the most reliable printer I have ever owned. I have purchased many good professional printers, but Brother printers are superior. I have also gone for repair training for several printer Manufactures including Brother's, and I know how well built their printers are. What else can I say. I highly recommend them. MFC-9970CDW

By Metroworker from Washington DC Metro Area on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I did a lot of research on what I wanted before purchasing the MFC-9970CDW. I have a mixed wireless network of apple MacPros, iPad's and windows based computers. Other than a couple of minor set up issues, I love this printer/scanner for my small consulting business. I needed something with speed, relatively low cost and reliability. The printer scores on all these features. The scanner works well in all modes, which was one of my biggest needs. I dumped my other other brand when they quit upgrading the software, forcing me to purchase a new piece of equipment. I won't go back.

Simply awesome

By Skywarner from Montgomery, Alabama on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this printer in my small business and print about 200 to 500 pages a week. This is a very fast, reliable printer. Colors are excellent when printing personal photos. Start-up speed is really great. Cartridges last a long time and are very easy to replace. It was easy to set up to print for all my computers in the house on my LAN. Sometimes I wish the paper tray had a little more capacity. At some moments during print start it can draw 12 amps so it tripped my UPS and upset my desktop computer until I put it on a separate circuit. Overall this is an outstanding printer.

A solid but intrusive performer

By Magnus from New York, NY on 12/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my 2nd MFC from Brother. It is a great step up from the MFC-9440CN that was my work horse for 4 years, but suffers from the same drawbacks as the previous model - principally the high cost for replacement genuine toner cartridges. One major new drawback is the very intrusive messaging system that pops up every 5 minutes to inform you that a toner cartridge is running low and WHICH CANNOT BE TURNED OFF!! Other than that, the unit appears to be well worth the money - well built, easy to set up and operate, excellent quality documents, scanning (using Acrobat software) and fax.

We are a small home health care business and needed a solid color printer for our marketing team which also has robust scanning capability for our in-house scanning needs. The MFC_9970 CDW was perfect for our needs. We print what we need , when we need it and just the right nubmer of copies. This is huge for a business running on strict budget. It also gave us the ability to customize our marketing documents without having to mass print something may not use for future marketing events. The best part of buying from Brother is the customer service. We had a broken glass on flatbed scanner and call support. The technician came the next day with the part and fixed it .

Great Color All-In-One, Fast & Reliable

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Ive owned several Laser Let printers and all-in-one printers from competing manufacturers and even more ink jet printers, but the Brother MFC-9970CDW clearly stands out. Since initial installation almost a year ago, it has performed flawlessly. Its very fast and the software package that comes with the printer is not only functional, but easy to use; unlike competing brands. While I seldom use the fax, I use the printer, copier, and scanner on a regular basis. The image quality is very good and the speed is even better. My last two Laser Jet printers for my home office have been Brother Laser Jets, and both have performed flawlessly.

We use this high-end Brother printer for color brochures and customer presentations. I would rate this printer much higher if not for the akward output paper path. Print quality is excellent in both color and black & white. This printer would benefit from a larger paper capacity without requiring the purchase of an additional paper tray. I had to replace the drum unit within three months of purchase. The drum unit was replaced under warrentee at no cost to me. It has worked great ever since.

A Great Office Printer

By FHPM from Orlando Fl on 12/20/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The first 3 color laser I have owned bought for a new small business. I have been blown away by this printer. The print quality and speed are first class. I has been in constant use for over 2 months now and has worked flawlessly. The wireless setup is so easy a child could do it. the fax function just works. The Duplexing (on print & copy) capability is just great and I don't know how we did without it for printing manuals and brochures. It has become indispensable to us. The only feature I haven't tried is envelope printing via the rear door so I may add to this later. It would be hard to fault this machine and if it broke I would have to buy another immediately. The included PaperPort software for scanning to pdf etc is very nice and the OCR software gets full marks. we have used it to scan text out of printed material to put into other applications and found it very accurate. Buy one. Oh yes one other reason for choosing Brother is their Linux support which is why I purchased a previous MFC and this one

Do Not Buy, Terrible Product

By BoRitter from Antioch, Alabama on 12/18/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is a terrible product. I average a toner cartridge a month. The machine decides when you need to purchase a new cartridge without regard to quality of print. When I am in the middle of a project it decides that I need a new cartridge, locks-up and refuses to print. I had to replace the drum after 10 months, because the copy count reached a certain number. This review will probably not be posted by Brother, but I felt compelled to try and warn others before they made the same mistake. Bo

Great Except for Envelopes

By WPWP from Philadelphia, PA on 11/23/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The printer is excellent in almost every way. That's what you'd expect from a "high end" unit like this. However, it cannot print envelopes without crinkling them. This is true of any envelopes including those made specifically for laser printers. For me, that major flaw disqualifies it from business use - every office needs to print envelopes without crinkling!

Big-Boy Machine With One Drawback

By torrealta from Oakland, CA on 11/01/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is the third Brother printer I have bought, and the first one is still working without a hitch with my Mac. The first, an HL-1470N, is a b/w printer with good speed and no problems in @ 14 years. The second is a b/w MFC 8440 with which I added scanning, copying and fax capabilities. Again, good speed and no problems in @ 8 years. I used these in my solo law office to make, in some instances, voluminous filings, which were always on time. They worked for me in my small practice as well as the high-volume machines in large law offices. This 9650 adds color and wireless scanning and printing. The WiFi scanner needs coaxing at times but eventually works with Image Capture or PDFPenPro. I could connect via USB or network cable, which might make it less fussy. Printing is very good, and the curling issue that plagues Brother printers is absent on this machine. The color seems fine to me so far, but I have no sophisticated needs and have not tried photo paper yet. The WiFi installation occurred as if by magic. One drawback to this machine concerns envelopes. The manual says that to print an envelope or thick paper, you have to open the back of the printer, throw a couple of plastic switches, close the back and print, then reverse what you did to print ordinary copy paper. Horrified, I tried an envelope without going through all that malarkey and it got through OK. I will consider following their instructions when I print on photo paper. My only carp is that the second paper trays that I bought for my prior machines are no longer supported, so I cannot use one tray for copy paper and the other for bond paper.

Warning: This printer is not compatible with Apple's Airport Extreme wireless router. In order to set up the connection, you have to input the network key. Okay it's big but.....

By Frodoboy from California on 08/09/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've owned the MFC-9840 for several years and loved it but it got semi-destroyed in a fire (it still works by the way). I thought "What am I going to replace it with now?" Then I saw the MFC-9970! This is the logical step up from the MFC-9840. The MFC-9970 takes much less time to warm up and prints very fast. The MFC-9840 was upstairs and whenever we wanted to print anything, by the time we got up the stairs, the printer was just thinking about getting started. The MFC-9970 has already finished the job when we get up to it. Very fast!!! The warm up time is much faster and I love that I don't have to wait for a minute just for the scanner to "warm up" when I want to copy something. It only takes a few seconds and it's ready to go! The print quality of the MFC-9970 is excellent as was the MFC-9840 and it also takes less time to print a double sided sheet. Double sided manuals appear to print almost twice as fast! The fax is a fax and our country connection is very slow so I can't comment much on that other than it works flawlessly. The document feeder tray is much faster than the MFC-9840 doing a double sided document in only a few seconds. The menu is now a lot easier to navigate with the LCD screen and the front panel controls are easy to use although Brother did reverse the black and color scan buttons from the MFC-9840 so that takes a little getting used to if you're coming from the MFC-9840 like I am. My one complaint, as always with Brother (and almost all other printer manufacturers), is that they put "starter" toner cartridges in their machines so you have to purchase new ones fairly soon if you print a lot. I wish they'd just put standard cartridges in it to start. It is also very BIG but it does so much so well, that is not really a problem if you have the space and unless you have to move it. It is a little lighter than the MFC-9840 though! All in all, the MFC-9970 is quite an improvement in speed over the MFC-9840 which was a very solid worker for years. I love my new MFC-9970CDW!!

Great Printer

By southerndoc from Atlanta, GA on 06/13/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an amazing printer/copier/fax machine and I highly recommend it to anyone considering a multi-function machine. The printer prints flawlessly and the color tones are excellent for both printing and copying. The biggest drawback to this printer is the lack of AirPrint support for iPhones, iPads, etc. This should be an easy firmware upgrade for Brother since other models support this, but they seem to not be interested in adding AirPrint to this printer.

Great printer; worthy replacement to my 9420CN

By lburke from Memphis, TN on 04/17/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

So far, so great. Despite having good experience with the Brother product I was replacing, I researched this purchase extensively before settling on another Brother. This printer sits on a network that supports my home office and everyone else in the household. In the week I have owned it, I have already tested some of its limits, printing huge Powerpoint documents and scanning large documents in duplex mode. This printer has preformed flawlessly. Text is crisp, colors are vibrant, speed is very good, and I love its quiet operation. I read the negative feedback about printing and scanning photographs, but even as a photographer by hobby, I would not ask this of a business device and therefore cannot comment. I also have not had any issues with reported excessive paper curling or overly dark scans. The anti-curling setting seems to work just fine, and scans look good for my needs. The only problem I had was setting up the printer to print in duplex mode. The duplex setting on the printer had no effect on the operation of this feature I had to contact support to learn that I had to set this capability up within the printer driver on my Mac. Initially Support was not real helpful, but with perserverence I got to the right person (Scott?) who was very helpful. This is a fantastic feature for cutting down on paper consumption and was one of the reasons I chose this model. So far I am impressed. I don't think a better option exists when balancing quality, features and total cost of ownership.

My first laser. It is big but found a good place for it in my office. Great output. Challenged to set up duplex printing from my desktop.

Very Happy!

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used this printer now for several months and have been very happy so far. Scans beautifully to PC or email which I use a lot. The iphone app for it is also awesome! I also bought the extra capacity paper tray accessory so I don't have to switch papers between legal and letter (meaning I can just tell whatever program I am in to print on legal or letter and it picks the right tray). And all of the above I am doing on my home network wirelessly which is great!

Delivers on the promise

By Papa23 from Arlington, VA on 04/05/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Upgraded from a Canon color inkjet multi-function that worked well, but I wanted to quality, etc., of the laser (and the Canon was worn out). Have owned for a few months and been impressed. The automatic document feeder has been flawless, and the feed speed (especially during scans) is great. The paper curling issue you read about is apparent, but it hasn't bothered me at all. Very pleased with my purchase. Brother, nicely done.

All in one

By CyberOpa from Iowa on 03/31/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've owned my MFC-9560CDW for about three months. The Favorable things I have to say. 1. Its a good duplex scanner. 2. Great Color Laser pictures are crisp and clean. 3. Good monochrome printing. The negative thing and why I gave it such a bad rating. 1. I'm on my 4th Black Toner cartridge in 3 months. 1 - starter cartage printed about 500 pages, 1 - TN315 Tone cartridge printed about 2000 pages, suppose to print 7000 pages, not even close, and 2 - TN310 Black Toner cartridges. the 1st only printed 400 doublesided pages, I am now on the second. Note I had a Brother monochrome printer before the toner cartridge would print about 6000 pages lasted me 6 Months or better for the same amount of printing. 2. Called tech support about the above issue. They had me look at some of printer parameters. One of them was the amount page printed on the Toner cartrige used before. Would be nice to know but you have to press the magic sequece of keys to get there and only they know the keys absolutly no info manual on the equipment unless you call them I guess thats where all the money they make on the cartridges goes tp pay their support rather then write manuals for people to find out themselves. 3. Looked up reveiws on the toner cartidge other people are having the same problem Toner cartridge have toner left in them. At least on one Brother Support told them how to disable the function that doesn't allow the printer to print when it thinks its out of toner. 4. Brother wanted me to write this reveiw since they would not tell me how to disable this function like the guy in the one reveiw.

Top-Quality All-In-One

By Turborascal from Austin, TX on 03/30/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Replacing an older Brother color laser AIO, this unit has several advantages. The touch-screen is intuitive and easy to use. Instant-on LEDs for the scanning light source are far better than the previous ccfl units. Furthermore, both sides of a document are scanned in one pass. GREAT. The print engine warms quickly and is quieter than the previous unit. Color is a bit oversaturated out of the box, but can be adjusted with the driver. I'm very pleased with this new unit and would highly recommend it for its feature set and quick, quiet operation.

Got What I Expected

By bear77 from Bend, Oregon on 03/30/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wanted a laser all in one with legal scanning flatbed capabilities as well as legal printing capabiilties. Also wireless so it works with my laptop and house guests. My injet all in one provided most of this but did not allow me to work with water based pigments or glues on the printed document (artistic application.) Does everything I expected. Takes a while to print the first sheet but quick once its warmed up. Also, takes some patience and tweaking on the color and light settings to get photo printing just right. I knew this before buying it.

Works Well with a few glitches

By EdMig from Weston, CT on 03/21/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Works well for the multi-function services it is designed for. I have three issues: 1. It does take a while to print if the unit is in sleep mode and it is somewhat noisy. These are common amongst other reviews I've read. 2. The auto document feeder used for copying or scanning does not have a duplexer so it cannot automatically scan two sided paper. It can only print on two sides. 3. The printer driver that I use on my Windows7 PC does not work with the manual feed tray. This was confirmed with their tech support. It is unclear if this will be available in later versions. Otherwise it is a good solid machine for a reasonable price. I have not needed to purchase toner yet, but it aint cheap.

Bottom Line:

I am extremely satisfied with this printer. It does everything, it does it easily, and it does it well. I have a small business & print about 50 pages a day. I was a bit leery that it would not meet my expectations, but it has exceeded them. The faxing and scanning features are equally as impressive. Ive dealt with their customer service, they are great. Ive read negative reviews about paper curling, it was never an issue. I cant wait for my printer at home to break so I can buy another one for home.

Product vs Documentation and Support

By BenJ from New York on 02/13/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

When this product works it is fantastic...now the rub. Very poor documentation requires frequent calls to the service desk. Product is affected by everything like power spikes and network interuptions and goes off the tracks frequently. Troubleshooting is very difficult and time sensitive, many times I have to revert to my cheapy HP to do faxes and scans. This product is very time consumming and support - while good - is closed on the weekends. When this dies so does my relationship with Brother.

Sucks ..at least for how I'm using this

By Slava from Redmond, WA on 01/23/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This may work for you if you are ok with: 1. Not using it as a scanner: incapable of scanning smaller pieces of paper (like checks) through the adf. I do this frequently, so it turns into a major hassle having to scan several pieces one by one and then "assemble" these pieces into one file via Adobe on my computer ..unlike my Xerox scanner that just scans whatever i throw into it 2. When you scan to pdf, the software arbitrarily inserts a set of numbers after the name you give the file. This is impossible to correct (per call to cs, manual, etc). Personally, I like to name files what I name them and using products that don't attempt to do that for me 3. If you buy non-OEM printer cartridges (much cheaper than what Bro will sell you), you'll forever be looking at a warning that reads "replace toner cartridge". Not only i won't know when i'm actually close to running out of ink, i also have to push a button EVERY time i need to do something on the machine to clear this message from the screen 4. Feeding in envelopes ONE BY ONE to avoid a paper jam (no joke) 5. When it does jam and you follow all on-screen instructions, the machine is unusable until you unplug it and plug it back in. The jam message simply doesn't go away even after the jam is un-jammed (the issue is that the machine is inoperable until the message clears) 6. [CENSORED BY BROTHER] CS attitude on the calls, they acted very surprised that i cared about any of the above to have bothered to call them at all Positives: CS speaks English well enough for you to detect their annoyance with you; it does print as advertised, no complaints there P.S.: remember that scene from "Office Space"?.... you know what i'm talking about ;)

Awesome Printer, INCREDIBLE support

By GripTrix from Los Angeles, CA on 01/06/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We recently purchased this printer for our small office, and I just can't say enough about it. It's fast, reliable, and has a very intuitive interface. We operate with Mac OS Lion, which can be difficult with many products. However this printer offers full functionality for Mac OS. I did have some issues setting up the scan functions and each time I called Tech Support, I received immediate help from knowledgeable, real live people and they solved every issue with a smile. TOP NOTCH SERVICE, virtually unheard of these days. I don't normally write reviews, but I just have to share this experience! Kudos, Brother!

We purchased a new Brothers MFC-9970CDW printer and we had problems with it from the start. A certified technician was sent by Brother and parts were replaced but still no luck. Brother sent a replacement and it is working perfectly! We really like the "Scan to PC" feature the most. It prints fast and the employees are happy with the new printer. I am very pleased with this product and look forward to many years of usage. Thank you Brother for standing behind your products!!

Great Value

By Pennnguin from Phoenix, AZ on 11/05/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am satisfied with this purchase. This machine has great features and capabilities for the cost. One of the issues that should be addressed is the lack of stability for access doors, they are flimsy. The noise that is produced is loud. The spool up time and efficiency is great! Overall, it is met my expectations, but I believe some of the hardware could be redesigned.

So far this printer has been AWESOME! It does everything you could expect from a printer costing thousands. I have owned it for a couple of months and have not had to replace any toner cartridges or consumables. Another Great Brother MFC

By LegalBeagle1 from Chicago, IL on 10/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After 60 days of owning the MFC 9970CDW it has met all my small business needs and then some! For example, when I need to scan, color print and fax immediately (on a daily basis), my Brother MFC 9970CDW has done the job smoothly. Though I agree with other reviews about the quality of envelope prints (i.e. creased and glued), it's a minor flaw for such a great machine with easy to use features. This has been a great investment which improved my office productivity.

We got this printer to print our wedding invitations, it was cheaper than ordering them, it was a great investment, it has so many functions, one of the features I love is the automatic feeder, I can scan from the automatic feeder, the resolution is good and printing in color is ok ( I have seen better, but is not bad). Sometimes I have trouble with the fax if you are faxing to an old fax.

Great, but...

By SmallBusinessUser from Charlotte, NC on 10/13/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Printer, copier, fax, scanner - all great (photo just OK). My MAJOR complaint is envelope printing. It is extremely cumbersome. You have to have easy access to the BACK of the machine, make MANUAL adjustments, then go back to your computer, print the envelopes, then go back to the printer and UNDO the manual adjustments EVERY TIME you want to print an envelope. Really???? I don't understand how Brother could make such a poor choice for this feature. What small business does not print envelopes! You can print envlopes without these extra steps, but the envelopes will come out glued shut, creased and mangled. Had I known about this problem, I would have picked another all in one.

I have never owned a Brother printer before, I am definitely a fan now. The duplexing feature of the scanner is like no one else I have seen before. It is fast and actuate (OCR). I upgraded the RAM so it is really fast printing and scanning. It is really designed for a small business, but I am just using it at home so it is so much more than I need or can use but it's always fun to configure and play :)

LOOOOOVE this machine

By wildbill from Meriden, CT on 10/07/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It took me longer to unpack this machine (and it was carefully packed) than to set it up. I have a wireless network and it was uncannily easy to set up on the network and on the PCs. It worked great from day one. Print quality and speed is great, scanning is excellent as well, the doc feeder works great. Could not ask for more. The only negative is that the printed matter is in a bit of a cubbyhole and for someone like me with dry skin its hard to get a grip on the papers. But that is very minor...I'd give this puppy a 99% grade out of 100%. Brother, you have a new lifelong customer...no wonder my friends raved about you!

Awesome Printer

By Growla from Sunny Hot Tampa, FL on 10/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After much research, I found this printer to serve all my needs. It performs better that any HP printer I have owned and is fast. After a 10 second warmup time it spits out the pages fast and furious, even if duplexed. My concern prior to purchase was the duplex phase of this machine. Brother does not go into detail about this as others do. However, I took a chance and found it to be everything I wanted. If you set it up correctly, it will automatically print duplex. It will scan duplex upon direction. It is clear if you chose the correct selection. Many of my original issues were a result of the learning curve. I purchased the Fujitsu Scan-Snap prior to this for fast scanning. This machine is nearly as fast so I don't need it any longer. If you are searching for that ONE machine like I was-- you will not be disappointed, but rather, pleasantly surprised. Toner lasts a long time also. The only downer is the weight and only a USB plugin, no SD plugins. But it will print from any tablet wirelessly!

Fantastic Printer/Scanner

By Gator from South Florida on 09/30/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer does everything I want it to do. The scanner is super simple to use. The scanning software that comes with it does a nice job orienting scanned images and creating PDFs. I do quite a bit of scanning and this has saved me a lot of time. The print quality is excellent. Wireless setup was easy to do. I haven't had much need to do straight copying yet nor any faxing. It's a lot of money for a printer/scanner but so far it's been well worth it.

A Great Purchase

By marvelous from Grand Blanc, MI on 09/26/2011

Bottom Line:

This is a great printer. The quality and ease of use is great. For the volume of printing we do, its speed and quality of print meets our needs. We have several who have hooked up to it and they also enjoy the speed and the various functions it provides. Before we had an inkjet and were always running out of ink. This is great - not having to change ink cartridges every time you have a big print job to do.

Great machine!

By JohnW from Undisclosed on 09/23/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Although the MFC-9970CDW has capabilities beyond the usual home office needs, my wife and I are active in Lions Club and organize preschool eye screenings, thus requiring a lot of paperwork. We can now duplex scan, duplex print and prepare large numbers of copies and prints at a fraction of the cost of commercial copy centers. It's fast and easy, especially since it works flawlessly on our home network. We thought it extravagant at first, but it may well pay for itself soon!

This machine works well ...

By Realtor22 from Undisclosed on 09/22/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This machine works well in general. Colors look good, speed is okay, generally acceptable. It is not good at printing envelopes. It ruins envelopes to the point that I would be embarrassed to send them out. Also, what they do not mention anywhere is that if you don't buy genuine Brother replacement toner cartridges, you cannot remove the "Low Toner" warning that appears on the screen. This would not be too bad except that you cannot make a copy while this warning in on the screen. I finally figured out that if you open the front cover and close it again, the warning will go away just long enough to make one copy. So, you can only make a copy if you open the front cover every single time you want to copy something. Truely a pain and efficiency killer! Yes, I can and will have to buy the genuine Brother toner cartridges to make my machine work correctly, however, they are about 25% higher priced than compatible toner cartridges. I have several other Brother products in our office and none of them have this new issue. Just fair warning when trying to anticipate actual expenses when buying this machine, price geniune Brother cartridges. In my opinion, this will make me look at a different product line in the future as I am very unimpressed.

I did a lot of research before I purchaced this printer, and I am very happy with it. I have had the printer for about a month. Installed the printer in 30 minutes or less. I really like this printer. I have 2 small businesses and the printer/fax is a dream. I do a lot of faxing and scanning. Print quality is great for general office needs. Fast, efficient....love the duplex. If I had only one complaint it would be to change the slot for the print output to make it easier to grab papers...but this is minor.

Excellent product

By SteveM from Milwaukee, WI on 09/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been using this printer for about a month on my home network (4 PC's, 1 mac, and an Ipad). We print about 500 pages a month between my wife and I and two teenage students. The printer is very fast. Output is excellent although photographic color is a little on the dark side (but that could probably be adjusted if I played with the settings). I've printed onto labels and thicker card stock with no feeding problems. The scan feature is great although requires 2 trips to scanner when used with the mac. I am not using the fax features so I can't comment on them. A couple recommendations - 1. turn the default preferences to B/W vs color to save the color toner (I believe it might use the color toner even on black text if not set this way). 2. Although I have not had any issues with this printer, my past experience with brother lasers would steer me away from using in high volume applications as I've had issues with jamming with Brother lasers on large print jobs linked to heat buildup.

By MaryMc from Seattle on 09/13/2011

Bottom Line:

Besides all the obvious features--which work fine--here's one I'll bet nobody else has mentioned: our old Brother MFC had a flimsy document feeder on top that broke the first time our cat sat on it (which she insists on doing, ALL the dang time). This one has a feeder that folds up when you're not using it--impervious to cat damage. The printer works, we are happy, and the cat gets yelled at less (which never helped anyway).

I am happy with the machine. Duplex scanning and printing. Good color quality. My only suggestion/complaint is that toner quantity is not monitored. I need to print a four page report to see how much toner is remaining. My best suggestion to you is to make toner monitoring part of the Control Center, so it can be seen from the computer screen.

After trying HP printers for many, many years, I am SO excited to have my new Brother MFC-9970CDW all in one printer. It starts printing and prints more pages quicker than my old HP laser printer, it duplexes in many fashions, it gives you the fax confirmation cover page showing your first page that you sent, it is relatively quiet, it faxes very quickly, sorting or stacking is easy, it is quite attractive, has 40 memory or speed dials for faxing and so far, we just LOVE it!!!! Thank you BROTHER

Excelent printer

By Redneckmormon from Buchanan, Georgia on 08/05/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer is far better than any ink jet printers we have ever owned. It turns on and is ready to print much faster than any ink jet printer and also prints pages much faster. Our only difficulty with this product is that toner cartridges are not locally obtainable.

very useful machine

By robcraw from Bedford, NH on 08/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We have been using this in our 8 person office for about 6 weeks. Very impressed so far. Printing is clear and bright, paperless fax is easy and fast. First document is slow, as other reviewers mentioned, but printing is very quick after that. Scanning is Excellent! I've never had a scanner that could produce such high quality this quickly. Set up was a little fussy.

Love this machine!

By bizgirl from San Diego, CA on 07/22/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After using the MFC-9970CDW for the last month, I must say, I'm thrilled with how much faster and easier it is to use from the previous model (we have that one too). Scanning: I love how fast the double-sided page scan works - makes scanning insurance documents a breeze. Faxing: This model seems to pull the paper through the scan feeder a bit faster and I haven't had one fax blooper yet. Copying/Printer: Much faster with cleaner images and text fonts. I'm impressed with the result everytime I print something. The only drawback to this machine is processing photo-paper...not so great. My photos turned out just OK, I think I need to invest in a photo-printer specific machine down the road...and keep pleasure away from business. Overall Components: This model is a bit more 'plasticy' than the last model which makes me think this is a 'lesser quality machine'...but the actual performance blows previous models out of the water. I'm so glad my husband listened to me and got this beautiful upgrade model for our growing business. I love it.

Amazing 4 in one capabilies at high speeds

By RonfromHouston from Houston, TX on 07/13/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my 4th all in one, and I am really impressed with what it does and does at a high rate of speed. Good for personal and or business use. I recommend the 9970cdw to anyone who needs copy/print/scan/ & fax more than just occasionally, and who needs it perform faster than the typical all in one. The users manual could use some work on the fax setup, but does a good job on the other functions.

High Quality Color Laser All-In-One

By dvacpa from New York on 07/11/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Brother MFC-9970CDW gives me everything I want at my desk. Scanning to email allows me to quickly share documents with my clients. Color printing helps me to make great presentations. The automatic duplexing is fantastic. Prints very fast after the first page comes out. The only negatives are the first page out is a bit slow and it can be a bit noisy.

Nice, but obviously rushed

By ChrisG from Los Angeles, CA on 07/07/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Failures: The printer's Print Server must be reset by an Administrator via the web control panel if a document you tried to Scan to Email failed (for instance, the file size was too large for the email server). Otherwise the printer beeps incessantly every 5 minutes or so. Turning it on and off doesn't suffice and there's no other way to cancel the job. This is a complete failure. Cannot duplex 3-holed paper. One touch works for scan to email, fax, and scan to network, but not scan to FTP. Manual bypass door is extremely "sticky" and feels like it will break every time I try to open it. Sluggish interface on printer and web interface, feels like the interface was designed by hardware engineers and not folks with any sort of usability training. Uses a lot of esoteric language that I understand, but most people will be completely flummoxed.

Excellent All-in-One

By docjen from Washington D.C. Suburb on 07/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Fast, accurate, high-resolution printing of both black/white and color documents. Scanner is very quick with excellent duplication for copies, PDF's files and faxes. It is large - if space is an issue, keep this in mind. Also, for the over-all size, the standard paper holder is petite (I am guessing that adding more stature with a bigger paper holder was considered a negative). Would recommend without reservations.

better than the 9840

By averageuser from NY Metro on 05/22/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After my MFC 9840 kept wearing out drums, i upgraded to the 9970. This machine is a lot easier to use and much faster as well. The only downside is the toner usage, the included toner ran out much too soon. Still a great bargain for color/double sided print scan/fax....

Deep features, completely dependable

By JAnderson from Minneapolis, MN on 04/18/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been using this for 2 months now, and I remain completely impressed. It scans (double-sided in one pass) to PDFs effortlessly, copies one and two sides, and has easy settings for copying odd things like front/back business cards onto the front of a single sheet. Plus it prints fast, even for larger volumes. The print quality, too, has been superb. I work in communications (design and text) and the look on the page is critical. This exceeded my expectation of what a laser color can do. On the suggestion side of things, I do wish the software made it possible to save scans as (and I'm honestly not sure if anyone lets you do this well). It can save to a numbered file, but that requires the extra step of moving and renaming -- which adds time. I'm on a Mac, so I'm working to automate that, but it seems like an easy software tweak that would make all our lives better. As I looked at making a multi-function purchase from any manufacturer out there, I felt at a disadvantage -- you truly don't know anything about how it works until you buy it. I remain nothing but pleased with how Brother chose to put this machine together.

Finally - one printer that does it all!

By mccoy from Austin, TX on 03/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had the printer for about a month now. It is great! I had been waiting along time for a mfc color laser that did fast full duplex printing. This does that and more. The print quality is very good with bright colors, the fax was extremely easy to set up, and the s/w installed on my Windows 7 laptop with no hitches at all. I have it wired to my wireless router, so haven't tried the printer's wireless feature, but I can print wirelessly from my laptop with no problems at all. Even though the printer has an excellent low power mode, I usually leave the printer turned off since I only use it on occasion. Last week, I printed something from my laptop and went in to the other room to turn on the printer and it had already printed the page! It woke up, printed it, and turned itself off again - nice! I'm very pleased with this printer for alot of reasons. Great job, Brother!

Great Machine

By Claudia from Laguna Niguel, CA on 02/21/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I will only buy Brother MFC's. This is my 3rd one and I have not had any problems. The first was so old, I replaced it with a newer one. My next one was great and I gave it to my daughter because I wanted a color laser. This does beautiful color, fast printing, great scanning and so easy to do double-sided copies. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants quality.

Finally, the printer I've been waiting for!

By petec from Undisclosed on 02/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Fantastic printer! Finally a printer that doesn't sacrifice performance for flexibility. Most all-in-one printers fall down in one category or another -- not this printer! The speed and quality of output are fantastic. Besides being reasonably priced considering all of its features, in the long run this printer can be a money saver: high-capacity laser cartridges as opposed to ink cartridges, duplexing, black-only mode. In short this printer provides all the features I wanted at a reasonable price: laser cartridges color duplexing scanning faxing wireless connectivity This printer was a breeze to set up and install. The only installation problem I had was finding the on/off switch. (It's covered over with a label!) I installed it with ease in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I've had this printer for two months now and couldn't be more pleased! Based on my experiences with other Brother products, especially their fax machines, I expect to get many years of reliable performance.

Another plus for Brother

By swanpointgirl from Undisclosed on 02/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my third Brother printer. I have 2 other Brother all-in-one machines that I have had for several years. This time, when I wanted a color wireless model, I first purchased another brand because it was less expensive and claimed to do what i wanted. However, after 3 weeks of using it I had had it with the noise and slow response to printing. Also with the very slow fax speed. So I returned it and purchased this machine. I am very happy with it - except that I cannot get the PC Fax to work - I have just printed out the software manual to see what I am doing wrong, and if I can't figure it out I will call customer support. But the machine prints quickly, scans quickly, does stand-alone faxes quickly, etc. I have decided that in the future I will only look at Brother machines.

Great Product!

By austinmark from Austin, TX on 02/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This really is a great machine. It does all that I ask and does it quickly. Duplex printing is a great way to save paper, although I wish there was an easier way to select it when I want it (other than going into printer properties), but this might be a Windows issue.

Great All-In-One

By SSLLWA from Spokane, WA on 02/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great machine. Great features that work really well - wireless networking, two-sided printing, scanning to various output formats and sent wirelessly back to the PC/Mac. This is an excellent MFP at a very good price. There are two areas where this printer could be improved. First, the paper output area is under the scanner/ADF and it's a bit of a challenge to get letter size paper out due to the design. Second, the printed paper has a slight curl to it coming out of the printer. This could be a paper quality issue, but I didn't have this issue with my other laser printer.

Almost Best Purchase Ever

By LookingForGreatProducts from FL on 02/19/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is a great all in-one-device. Fax - OK, Scan - great, copy - great, print great, EXCEPT for printing color pictures. This printer cannot print an exceptable color picture. I have worked with support and up to Level 5 support, but they cannot get it to a point where the picture quality is accptable. I am comparing it to an HP color laser print, and it falls way short. The printer is built well and the comparative cost of toner is very good - one of the lowest price for cost per page of any color laser I have found. this would be an unconditional recommendation if it were not for the picture printing issue. Unfortunately, I am going to return it because of this problem.

This is my second color lazer printer and it is much better than the previous (more expensive) one. Set up was straightforward and self-explanatory. Works great with Windows 7, XP, and Mac, both wired and wireless. I have not had to change cartridges yet, but I think it will be much easier than the previous printer.

Great All in One Color Laser

By Everfam from Portland, Or on 02/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Brother MFC-9560-CDW lives up to its billing. I replaced a Dell 3010 CN color laser that performed admirably in the 4 years that I had it. I have put about 1,000 copies on the Brother printer in less than 2 months. The print quality is better than my old printer and the colors are truer than my old printer. The printer is fast and quiet compared to my Dell. The Brother takes up the same about of space but considering all the features, printer, scanner, fax, two sided copying its has allowed me to retire (2) stand alone single function devices. The auto duplexing feature was one of the major factors that drove me to buy the Brother. This feature saves filing space and money because it reduces your paper consumption. The fax feature, copier and scanner have performed flawlessly. The documentation and set up with my home network was easy. However, you need to spend a minute on the set up for auto duplexing because you have a lot of options to choose from. Great All in One.

Nice all in one

By Macadoo from San Diego, CA on 02/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great all in one machine for the home office. The only thing I'm not sure about is the cost for the replacement toners. They don't seem to be as available as other toners. Other than that, the machine works well on my wireless network at home. My desktop and two laptops can easly print from anywhere in the house. Recommend connecting the printer to the router with an ethernet cable for faster printing. It has a great feature so you can get your faxes sent to the computer so you don't waste paper.
