Excellent product-The best buy you will ever make.

By troublejack from New Jersey on 08/16/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After owning various H-P all-in-one inkjet printers I took a friends advice and purchased a Brother. I chose the Brother MFC-J6710DW because it had two large capacity paper trays, automatic feeder and a single sheet manual feeder slot for unusual items. Plus the fabulous large glass that allows you to make full size copies of 11"X17" or larger prints. I found this machine easy to set-up and operate. The ink cartridges go in very easy and I get about 50% more copies from the XL ink cartridges then I was getting with my old H-P printers. On a different note I must add that my printer did cease to print after just about 10 months of normal home office use. I had to go through an exhausting triple phone contact with each agent asking me the same information and having me perform a redundant exercise of attempts to get the printer working again. These were all things that I tried before I made the first phone call, so I knew it was not going to help. But the good news is that in the end Brother lived up to there warranty and sent me a new machine that arrived in just four days. If you don't own a Brother I recommend you check one out to-day. You will find that it will be the best buy you will ever make.

Not the speed we expected. Not user friendly. Has to reset itself after every copy job. copy one page and the machine has to go through all sorts of motions to print a different page.

Good Choice for Small Office

By VegasBold from Las Vegas, NV on 04/02/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We print primarily 11x17 b/w for reviewing purposes & this Brother has been good for us - so far. For the last 3 months, we have been using a refurbished machine, sent directly to us from the manufacturer after our previous one went kaput within 4 months! Perhaps it was a fluke. I hope so. Unlike the HP I bought 2 yrs ago, the Brother seems to work well with our macs. I've been happy about that. One of my friends, who is also an architect, has an older version of the MFC-J6710DW, which is why I bought it. This machine produces color & b/w, double-sided prints. It prints & scans any size up to 11x17, which works for us 99% of the time. If we need something larger, we send it to the local print shop. Color is good for small, check-sets, but not for client presentations. We've run 70% recycled content paper, card stock, envelopes, and glossy paper thru the machine & it's done a good job with all of it. The lines are still crisp & continuous weights after 3 months of use. What I don't like: machine interface and paper cartridges. The interface is clumsy. It's got a flip-up screen & you can scroll thru the menus, but sometimes trying to remember how to run a test print is time-consuming. I think a touch-screen would also be more useful. We use 8.5x11 in the top cartridge and 11x17 in the bottom. The way that the drawer cartridges slide in & out of the machine are rough and noisy. The paper adjustments inside the drawers are flimsy, and they don't move/adjust smoothly. There's a "catch" & we have to use some force to engage the adjustment levers. Sometimes I think I'll break one of the controllers if I'm not careful. I think the fax option is outdated. We receive faxes thru our online fax service as emails. We receive the fax & download them to our server. No paper unless we need it. All in all, the Brother has worked well for us. We don't use the interface very often, and we add paper about once a month. If you don't need fabulous color prints, this is a good machine for a small office because it can print several sizes up to 11x17 & scan similarly. The speed of the prints is pretty good too - unless you're in a super hurry (nothing prints quickly enough when you're in a hurry).

Great printer

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I like the 11"x17" printing feature to create network drawings. Printer is fast and smooth. My experience has been good. The usage is around 40 pages per week, so it might not be a great thermometer for high usage needs.

NOT so good

By BYRAGTMAN from St. Charles, MO on 01/12/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

While the print quality of this machine is high, very good photo and text printing. The design of the machine is really ridiculous. Case in point, when the machine runs out of letter size paper, it just automatically switched to the next full tray. The machine will tell you several weeks in advance that you are running out of ink, but will not tell you that you are out of one size or the other of paper. My LOW INK warning has been on for 3 weeks now, and I still have not run out of ink. But twice in the last week, the machine has switched from printing on 8.5 X 11 paper to 8.5 X 14 paper when the letter size ran out. True, you will not lose a page of document, but you will also now have to trim the longer pages down. What idiot thought of that feature? Also how about making a tray that will hold an entire ream of paper? 500 pages instead of 250?

Expensive Boat Anchor

By PastorMichael from Clinton, AR on 11/20/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I came in to this church as the pastor just a few months ago. Several months prior to my arrival on the field, the church had purchased this machine to use for all of their copying and printing needs (very small congregation). What I found was quite possibly the biggest headache I have ever had with printing and copying in my life (and that says a lot, as I was a school teacher for 14 years and dealt with a lot of horribly abused and maintained equipment). I will just list off the biggest of my headaches - then you the reader can decide if this is the printer for you (no particular order): 1. paper misfeeds/jams frequently. Often when there is actually no jam at all. Printer has been cleaned and checked - it just does this. 2. the manual feed tray (in the back) doesn't recognize media is in the tray at all a lot of the time - or recognizes it but just won't feed it - requiring several steps to try to get it to feed. 3. Prints using the manual feed tray often are not straight on the paper - probably related to the fact that the printer feed system is poorly designed/built. 4. Printer is EXTREMELY paper sensitive - the regular paper trays can be filled and some brands (even good quality) just plain will NOT feed reliably. Period. Jams, or even more frustrating - multiple sheets fed at one time - spreading your printing over multiple, partially overlapping sheets... I've probably already wasted a good ream of payer with just this issue. 5. VERY poor color rendering. I have never in my life - even going back to the EARLY days of inkjet printers - seen color printing as HORRIBLE as this machine - regardless of the claimed DPI - when the colors are SO far out from expected - it is an indication of a very poor printer. 6. Print head clogging - while the ink for this printer may be relatively inexpensive - it isn't when you have to clean the heads so often. NO rhyme or reason - it just will start skipping lines - requiring from one to 5 head cleanings - all with Genuine OEM/Brother ink. Yet more wasted paper. 7. Sometimes doesn't recognize that cartridge is installed - have to pull it out, put back in and push on the lever to get it to stay locked in. So - are their any positives? The claimed features and functions list is extensive - and it prints on 11X17 paper. But it is just about worthless in my book. So much so that as soon as we can afford to - this machine is going in the trash. First impressions are important - this is my first impression with a Brother machine - and I hope it is my last.

Great 4 in one. Color isn't the best

By Kristiaan from Chicago on 11/09/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I LOVE my MFC-J6710DW! It's got a great 11x17 print option that I use for making posters and Newsletters for work. All the options are wonderful. I especially like scanning through my lan connection. We have an earlier model in the office and it doesn't do half the things this one does (I'm trying to get them to purchase this newer model). The only problem that I have is that the color isn't as intense as I'd want in a inkjet printer. I KNEW this when I was getting into buying it. For everything else I wanted I took this into consideration.

Disappointed

By Dogro from Charleston, SC on 11/07/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Many options and for the most part it does exactly what I need. However, the print quality is less than stellar. I need to choose best quality to even see what is printed. If I elect to save ink, well I do just that, but cannot see anything on the paper. Wireless works great as does scanner and ADF. Printing envelopes is a no go...don't even consider because you will just get frustrated and in the end it just doesn't work. Ink is much cheaper than HP or any other brand, so that is a plus. No need for the phone line fax, but internet fax works great as well. So, in a nutshell it does what I need, but I am still disappointed for the money spent.

Great Machine

By Marsh from Tallahassee, Fl on 10/24/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We have had this machine for 3 months and are very pleased with the machine. Have not had any wireless network issues, it was very easy to set up. It handles the 11 x 17 paper beautifully especially in duplex mode. We purchased this machine for printing church bulletins, small church we print at home. we print 60 bulletins each week both sides, plus our other household printing needs and have just this last week replaced the starter cartridges on the machine. Good clear print quality and color. The closest thing that I could say as a draw back is that it does not print as fast as other printers that I have in my home.

I bought the Brother MFC-J825DW printer in January 2014 and I have had to have the paper grab wheels replaced. They are again pulling multiple sheets of paper. I am very unhappy with this printer. I would not buy it again or recommend it to anyone. Off to the repair store with it......the only positive is that it is under warranty.

Fantastic printer for the price

By RALPA from Lehigh Valley, PA on 10/16/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I needed a 11.5" x 17" printer for AutoCAD drawings, and this printer fills the bill. Print quality is good for an inkjet printer, and print speed is reasonable for an all in one unit. Controls are easy to use and intuitive. The only feature I would like is an envelope printing mode that wouldn't require reconfiguration of the paper feed. All in all, this a great printer for a small business, and there is nothing else in this price range with all the features this printer offers.

It will do given the price.

By DallasDave from Dallas, TX on 09/30/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Having owned Brother products in the past, I was excited to shop and discover the combination of price and features represented on the MFC-J6710DW. However, when I began working with this machine on a daily basis, I found it to be less than what I had hoped for and what the sales person assured me of its performance. Slow and very loud mechanical noises while copying right next to my desk is irritating. The color scan feature "streaks" and distorts the colors and image quality, on any quality setting, so much that I only use it for internal company messaging, not for public eyes. The recycling time built into nearly every function is very disappointing. Now that I have to live with this MFC on a daily basis, I am continuously disappointed with its performance, particularly with the features mentioned above. Add to these, the fact that color scanning is such an embarrassment that I hesitate sending scans out into the public and it makes me feel that I am stuck with a lemon.

Good all-in-one printer

By Redbone from North Carolina on 09/27/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had this all-in-one printer for several months now and it performs very well. Have used most of the features, except fax. Instruction book is well written and helpful especially to clear my first paper jam. Seems to use ink very sparingly as I'm still on the original cartridges. Performs 11x17 scanning, copying and printing fine as this was one of the reasons for my purchase. All in all I'm well pleased with the product.

Love Brother Printers

By CLASSICALGAS from Prescott, AZ on 09/23/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

There is only one thing that doesn't work well, but it is the one reason why I really wanted to purchase this printer - the direct feed paper path. It misfeeds every time (by allowing the paper to get slightly crooked. That applies to envelopes, card stock. and I wouldn't even risk putting photo paper through). Everything else works perfectly with this printer. It was easy to set up. I like the cost and performance of Brother inks better than other brands. The print and copy functions are relatively fast. However, it doesn't meet up to its "Professional Series" name.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This has proven to be a really good all, works for all my office and personal use needs. Brother sent me 2 refurbished ones to replace a MFC 6940CW that was under warranty. I have to give Brother credit, when those 2 did not work as well as they should have Brother sent me a new machine that does work well. The 2 refurbished machines pulled multiple pages out of the paper tray at a time, this machine does not. Any machine can have feeding problems when the humidity level is too high, but it is a infrequent occurrence with the new machine. Thank You Brother.

Bottom Line:

I had to choose between this printer and a similar hp printer. I should have spent the extra money and got the hp. this is the biggest pile of junk I have ever owned. it takes 30 seconds between each page when using the copy function. I cant do a black and white print job if I am out of any of the colors. the printer pulls more then one page at a time causing paper jams and I have to re number my checks after printing because of it pulling more then the one page required. I am extremely disappointed with this printer and all the time I waste constantly messing with it. I will never buy another brother product and will spend the extra money and get hp.

I have had 3 replacements of this printer. The first 2 were because the print head clogged after changing the ink. The inks were OEM. The 3rd replacement was because Brother sent be a broken printer. Because I live in Hawaii, I had to request the return labels every time the printer was replaced. The labels were not sent with the printer because of a "glitch" Tech support sucks. They forced me to use 2 complete sets of cartridges for each printerto "prove" the print head was clogged, and didn't want to replace the ink they made me waste. The printer is very slow and the print quality is poor.

Misrepresented

By HomePro from Woodland Hills, CA on 07/21/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I chose the 6710 so 11x17 paper could be stored in, and run from, the second drawer.I asked the on-line sales rep if the second drawer would protrude with 11x17 paper loaded in it, and was assured that it would not. I ordered it and, as I had suspected, it protruded about 6 inches. I returned it and ordered a 6510, which loads a single 11x17 sheet via an easily accessible top rear slot. I placed the printer on a pair of 1 inch spacers, and store the 11x17 sheets on the desk surface below the printer. The 6510 is very satisfactory; good product; good decision.

Easy to clear the path of any obstruction, easy to load both paper and cartridges. Easy to set up and the online updates help keep the unit fresh.

I have had this machine for about 2 years and have finally gotten around to write a review. I love this machine! The 11x17 printing and scanning is invaluable to me. I am a musician, run a big band and a summer community band, and do some arranging for local high schools and a college. The printer works well with all programs, including SIBELIUS, a music notation program. I can create all types of documents. The wireless feature is wonderful! Yes, I had initial difficulties setting up the scanning feature wirelessly, but that was on me, not the software or the machine. It is networked so my real estate agent wife can print to it and scan from it to her computer.

Disappointed

By NoLuck from Washington, DC on 06/03/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

For all the research I did prior to purchasing my MFC-J6710DW I was very disappointed with the product. Once the lengthy set-up was finished all the machine would do is constantly cycle through cleaning until the ink ran out - and that's A LOT of cycles. I returned product hoping it was just that machine. On machine #2 I was initially hopeful, wireless worked ok and everything printed fine. Then after a couple weeks constant cleaning cycles returned. Uninstalled, reinstalled, USB, wireless, nothing worked. Then, even the occasional test print page stopped printing black, even though the cartridge had lots of ink. Next my Windows 7 "View Devices and Printers" started showing multiple printer icons! Ugh... The on-line support was valiant in their efforts to assist me but machine #2 goes back tonight. Sorry, Brother, time to try somethnig else.

MFC-J6710DW Review

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I specifically bought this printer because it is the only printer in its price range and size (compact enough for home use) that will print and scan 11" X 17" documents. I use it for music parts and it enables me to make 8.5" X 11" two page parts without a taped seam----I just print the two pages onto a single 11" X 17" page. It works very well and I commend Brother for making a printer of this type available for home use.

love the 11x17 scanner/printer

By teresa from Maryland on 05/26/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had some problems getting this set up as I don't have the wireless connection. Spent time with on line technical help, who were knowledgeable. Once it was set up, it is great. Love the 11x17 scanner and printer. The slot in the back for manual feed is a great idea but I cannot get the paper to print straight from there yet. I love Brother printers/ this is my third one over 10 years. I use them a LOT in my home office. Really like having the two paper trays for different size paper. The ink lasts a long time, the color printing is good, although I mostly use black and white.

Great Printer

By cnbg from Texas on 05/04/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I previously had the MFC-6490CW and when it had printing problems we replaced it with this printer. I really liked my old printer and this one is similar but it also prints double-sided. Which is a big plus! The other selling point was that the printer can print on paper up to 11 x 17".

MFC-J6710DW

By Anonymous from Edgewater MD on 04/22/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Solid, dependable product. The auto select for paper size on this machine actually works which for me is critical as I use both letter and legal paper on a daily basis, glad the paper waste and babysitting is over. Copies at a much faster speed than my old bother MFC. One area of improvement could be ensuring only 1 piece of paper is pulled from paper tray at a time, sometimes multiples are pulled resulting in doc being copied over more than one piece of paper.

I prefer the save feture of my Brother printer over my Office-Jet HP-8500 All-In-One printer but I prefer the Office Jet HP-8500 All-in-One printers ability to scan two sided documents automaticly crop them using both the feeder or bed scan and its ability to properly allign the document on the page.

Pretty Good Value

By suttongeo from Lafayette, CA on 03/24/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Prints nicely, scans nicely. But why did you arange the buttons with Fax on top. Default should be copy or scan. It really takes a loooong time for the printer to re-set itself after copying. Why is that? What is its little brain trying to think about so slowly? That wait is a real pain if, say i make a test print then want to adjust color, size, etc and make another test print. That part is really annoying.

Great printer, but.......

By sparklykittyjewelry from Fort Myers, FL on 03/10/2013

Bottom Line:

This product is great as a printer, but as a copier leaves much to be desired. There is a long delay between copies, and I have yet to be able to copy on legal size because I cannot seem to be able to get beyond the letter size tray. Have not been able to figure that one out yet. Top-notch printer though!

By DavideD from Portland OR on 03/02/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I really like my MFC-J6710DW. Good print quality and quantity. Fast enough. My only problem, which I didn't realize before I bought it but would not have prevented me from buying, is that it does not scan two sided paper. I have to print a copy of the back side of everything first and then scan the whole document. Machine should scan both sides without my having to copy half of it first.

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have been happy with my other Brother Printer (HL-5340D), therefor I bought the MFC-J671DW mainly to use the scanner and print 11"x17". But I have not been able to set it up and I dread calling Brother technical help. So my new printer is just sitting there Idle. I would love to return it. I found the manual too confusing to follow.

Brother J6710DW Multi-function Center

By ProfessorLion from Ridgecrest, CA. on 02/08/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A very fine machine. I particularly like its wireless feature. But the other features I like; 11 X 17 print size capability, individual color cartridges, (No. more disposing of tri-color cartridges because ONE COLOR is empty.), and I LOVE its multi-function features. For some reason, COLOR copies come out lighter than the originals. (Possibly the type of paper used.) And like ALL modern electronic devices, the instructions are HARD to understand! (At least this printe came with detailed instructions!)

Well....

By ACCsandi from Roanoke VA on 02/07/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had the previous incarnation of this machine and loved it. I truly love the printing and scanning quality of this new generation but the paper path is bulky, clunky, loud and jams WAY TOO OFTEN! I want to love it, but that prevents me from doing so. Also, I broke off the paper stop within the first two weeks and it no longer fits right so my paper either gums up or hits the floor. THAT is my fault but the jams are not. The paper trays need some work and the feeder slot should not be in the back. Other than that, it is a great printer and scanner.

Good But No Cigar!

By DCSF from San Francisco, CA on 02/06/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Brother's MFC-J6710DW printer is a fine printer in most respects with one very irritating flaw: The envelope printing format is unusable. The return address margins are much too great to be graphically correct. So if you want to print envelopes another printer must be used. The MFC-J6710DW takes up a lot of desk space and having to add another printer for envelopes makes the work station difficult to manage. On the other hand, the printing (particularly duplex) is flawless.

Great Printer

By ACEKQJTEN from South Florida on 02/06/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a semi-professional/retired still working photographer, designer, editor, etc. and found this printer to be one of the best I ever purchased. The features like tabloid printing, oversized scanner platter, two trays plus rear paper input, and the overall color controls make this almost the perfect printer. And the wireless printing capabilities are really the cat's meow. I did have some issues setting up the printer (wireless network and color/quality overrides) but Brother customer service was excellent and had my issues resolved in no time.

Paper trays leave a lot to be desired.

By exABStech from Missouri on 02/06/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Let me start out by letting you know that I am a professional printer repair technician with over 20 years experience. This printer is a decent printer for the price. The color is outstanding and the dual trays and document feeder that are capable of 11x17 pages are a great selling point. However, while the paper trays DO adjust to fit 11x17,if they are extended out that far, they are extremely flexible and twist out of shape easily. They need to be made from a sturdier plastic that will stay square, otherwise, the ledger size paper doesn't feed consistently. If you put ledger paper in the bottom tray, it won't feed at all.

This replaces a couple of older pieces of equipment. I'm quite please with the performance ofthe copy, scan and print functions. I've not had paper jams which were frequent with my HP. If I have any complaint, it is that the color is not very vivid, but there may be some ink saving feature that I am not aware of and It has not been worth calling Brother about it. This has saved me a lot of time and hassle. Scanner and copy features work very well.

By TechnicalEngineer from USA on 01/10/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros: This printer has wonderful 11x17 qualities for engineering, as well as esculent photo printing capabilities on photo paper. Superb copying as well from hand written notes to 11x17 sheets. Cons: Wireless network is a paint to get setup (with or without the disk) sometimes. But once programmed, the printer and scanner work flawlessly. I have recommended this printer to 2 other engineers and a graphic artist, all of them are very happy with the purchase (& with the same feeling on the network setup). None of us use the Fax.

Decided to purchase this all in one after the success I had with my three previous Brother printer purchases and how pleased I was with them. Due to all the additions of devices, three laptops, two I-Pads and three I-phones, the demand for printing and the convenience to do it wirelessly drove the new purchase. Have been very pleased so far with the purchase and the ease it has been to set everything up and get everyone connected has been a snap. The print quality is exceptional and the capability to print up to 11 x 17 combined with all the other features you get with the MFC-J6710DW made it an easy choice with no regrets.

This is my second MFC from brother. The first one was great. I purchased the 2nd one when I changed jobs. This printer does it all very well. The main reason I chose this model was the scan/print 11x17. The technicians in the field really appreciate having a drawing they can read. I use all functions only because some are still dependent on fax communications. I hate faxing but this machine handles this chore flawlessly.

Nice All-In-One Printer

By TG17 from Justice, IL on 11/10/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this MFC-J6710DW because I wanted the large format paper handling (11"x17") and the auto-duplexing feature. Haven't used the fax features, don't really need them. Pros: -menus are easy to follow -wireless works well -two seperate paper trays -large photocopying surface (up to 13"x19") -decent print speeds -auto duplex -nice software features Cons: -It's huge! -paper tray system is awkard when adding paper -to use envelopes you have to remove all paper and reset sliding arms to letter size. -goes through ink pretty quickly -has had a few paper jams -scanner resolution is only 1200dpi max Overall, I am satisfied with this printer and it has been working well. I'll be trying to use the larger capacity ink cartridges LC79, to see if I can get better ink life. My yellow cartridge is nearly empty after printing about 150 pages with mixed text and graphics, plus about 15 photos. The other color cartridges are down to around 30% level. The black cartridge is at about 45%. These were the cartridges that came with the printer which are the low capacity type LC75.

I spent 6 months looking for a printer with this printer's attributes & within my price range. Finally found & purchased this one. It is slower than my HP, but costs 4 times less per page than the HP. The docs I print in PDF are legal & letter and this printer does the job (selects the correct paper size). Print quality is good. Scanning from page feeder & faxing work very well. DRAWBACK: if printing a large doc (80 + pages), check the document. My printer seems to like to pull 2-3 blank pages when it should only pull one. (will call support to see what I can do to stop this)

Not worth your money

By designer from Milwuakee, WI on 10/31/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've owned this printer for about a year and a half and it started printing with a very low quality. I replaced all of the cartridges and had the same results- text that was printing at 30% of tone with lines missing. Trying to work with Brother to get it resolved was not worth my time. They claimed their ink was unique and they wouldn't talk to me until all of my cartridges were replaced with their brand, regardless that the main black cartridge was brother Ink and all I print is black and white. My MFC-J6710DW is going to find its way into the dumpster and I'll be shopping for a replacement. HP has been more supportive in the past.

Wouldn't buy the same again

By MainMachine from Newport News, VA on 10/22/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I originally picked this machine because of the dual trays and the promise of easy duplex printing. The large scanner bed was also a plus. However, the color produced by this machine is so inferior that I am using a smaller/older HP for property brochures and flyers and anywhere else where the colors are important. I am ONLY using the Brother inks in this machine, so "inferior", "off-brand" ink is not the problem. Also, on my old HP, the scan function let me control the specifics of each scan whereas the Brother is "take what you get". On the HP, I could scan to PDF and add or subtract sheets during the scan, if necessary. Also, I could crop and rotate during the scan AND I could specify the scans name and where it would be saved. Not on the Brother. If I were shopping for a machine today, I would not buy this one.....I'd get an HP.

Everytime I want to do something out of the ordinary, like double side print, feed from the back, etc. There are too many steps involved and you MUST have the manual and hope for the best.

Could have been better

By Buck from Woodland Park, CO on 10/12/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My excitement at the initial successes with this printer was soon replaced with frustration due to numerous paper feeding problems. It will not feed my Quicken checks properly, failing to handle a single check without taping it to a full sheet of paper, and then manually feeding it in. Envelopes can only be feed one at a time through the manual rear feed. It's better than some but could use some improvement with its paper handling.

Economical feature packed printer

By Davecl from Portland, OR on 09/18/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am not an excitable person but, I must say I am quite pleased with this MFC. For the price, it is good quality feature packed MFC. First off, this printer's print quality is very good. Along with regular and duplex printing, photos are as good a quality as any other photo printer I have used and much better than color laser printers. My most favorite function is nework scanning PDF formats into my Paperport software. The ink cartridges last a long time. I expecially like being able to replace individual colors as opposed to one more expensive multicolor cartridges. The FAX works as it should however, I prefer to us my PC FAX since it stores a copy of my faxes. On the down side, only the printer is support using Windows server print service. And only the printer works in Windows 8. No scanning.

Nothing Better on the Market for the Price

By Richard11350 from Joplin, MO on 09/10/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A good functional business use product. Will do what you need and more. Color Printer Quality is the only negative, prints are lack luster. Speed is good, duplex good, duel paper trays good. The best Large Format machine for the price on the market. You can find cheaper, you can find better printing, but you can't find the versatility this machine offers. Performs better than expected.

A Good Buy, But Mediocre Print Quality

By Milton from Sarasota, FL on 09/03/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

PRO 1. It's the best deal anywhere for 11x17 printing capability and high-capacity dual paper trays. Lots of plastic, but cleverly engineered. 2. Despite its required oversized footprint, it's an attractive piece of desktop office equipment. 3. The setup instructions suck a little less than those of other printers I have used. If followed very carefully, there are only one or two instances of instructions being ambiguous or not producing predicted results. It appears that English might even be the native language of its authors. 4. The scanning process from the computer is very user-friendly. 5. The color-coded front-access ink-cartridge compartment is extremely convenient. CON 1. The darkest print, even on on the "Best" setting, is gray; not black. 2. Colors, even on the "Vivid" setting, are washed-out oddly-tinted approximations of the real colors. 3. The default front-panel mode setting to which it always returns automatically is FAX, even though FAX is seldom used by anyone anymore. This results in the nusance of needing to select COPY to initiate every use as a copier, even if COPY was the previous mode last manually selected. 4. In the COPY mode, the machine takes far too long busily grunting, groaning, farting, clicking and clacking, in preparation for producing a single-page copy, and then in silent recovery from producing the copy. If you are not using the ADF and want to copy something else, the "Please Wait" message is interminable before the START button can be pressed again. I soon learned to go do something else between copies, and come back later. CONCLUSIONS I would buy it again because of its price and features, but -- 1. I keep a cheap 5-year-old standard-size printer of another brand connected for photos and for documents that have to look good. 2. I'm going to experiment with aftermarket ink brands, to see if I can find one whose black ink for this printer is really black.

Great Duplex Inkjet

By JTee from Frisco, TX on 09/03/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I don't do a lot of printing but much of what I do benefits from being able to print on both sides of the paper efficiently. The MFC-J6710DW fulfills that need admirably. Its being wireless is also a plus. The printer has not jammed once in over a year's worth of use. Great job, Brother!

Pretty Good Product

By DavisMedical from Indiana on 08/27/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a small business owner and having a printing solution that actually works is vital. I have had many other brands of printers that just didn't work. I bought this brother because they have a quality name in the industry, and I now know why. This printer works, was easy to install, and is fast. A couple of issues I have with the printer could easily be fixed. Sometimes when printing wirelessly pages will only print a small section of data and move on to the next, and the machine is not space friendly. If you are looking for a reliable work horse this will do the job!

MFC-J6710DW Review

By MikeL from Bristol, TN on 08/27/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A very good product. The print quality is clear and sharp. The fact that it can print and scan 11 x 17 makes it all the better. Most functions are intuitive and easy to use. The only exception is making auto paper tray selections. This could be a little better and the head seems to stop up and needs to be cleaned a little more often than I am used to. Overall, a great machine that I would buy all over again!

Good overall printer

By CHLLC from Houston, TX on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Very functional MF printer. The overall scanning, faxing and printer work very well and the wireless setup is easy. The construction quality of the paper tray leave a lot to be desired, they fell like they are very cheaply made and and requires delicate handling when filling with paper. The printer has lost connection with the wireless network on multiple occasions but is not a problem to reconnect.

Good Features

By Anonymous from Chatham, MA on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The larger scan feature on this printer is excellent. We wish there were even more printer choices/sizes in larger scanners. The trays are good sized and the cost of printing is not as expensive as with some printers. The ink seems to last a long time The only down side I have found so far (which is also important) is that the quality of the print is not very good. We use the printing only for drafts and light printing. The back to back print feature works well. Printing is a bit slow but works fine. The printer is also a bit bulky but worth the extra size for the larger scanning and good sized paper tray. The dual paper tray is a helpful feature. Overall, a good serviceable 3 in 1 printer (I use primarily to scan) that would be terrific with some improved printing capabilities.

I previously owned a high-end HP All-In-One. I had issues with the scanner quality, product construction, ink usage and software support. NONE of those issues exist with this new AIO. It scans perfectly saving me time and effort. It operates perfectly the first time and delivers what is expected. I haven't had the machine long enough to judge the quality of its rollers and other mechanical parts. So far, after 6 months of use, I really enjoy owning this machine.

Good all around printer for home use

By Michelangelo from Virginia on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a pretty good all-around printer for general use. I purchased it primarily for two reasons, it has 11x17 sheet size and it connects to my wireless hub. It does both of these things reasonably well. It has adequate color printing capability and it scans well. If there was one thing I think Brother could do that would be to make the paper feed and tracking more solid. The paper tends to get crooked in their automatic sheet feeders a little too easily. At least it is not an HP!!!! I will never buy another HP printer as long as I live since they now refuse to support legacy printers with updated drivers. Keep up the good work Brother!

Solid Workhorse

By renoengineer from Reno, NV on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second Brother multi-function machine and I am pleased with it's performance and features for the price. I use this machine as an office photcopier and printer, to be used in printing non-photo types of B&W and color documents. I also use the machine extensively to produce 11x17 sized documents and to create PDF files of any size. The machine is sensibly constructed and easy to use. Things that could be improved: The color printing could be better. Whenever I photocopy a single sheet off of the plate, the machine needs to pause and "spin it's gears" for a short period of time, requiring the user to wait in between each page that you want to photocopy.

A very good printer if a bit slow

By fjkapustka2 from Undisclosed on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The printer does a very good job. However, some jobs take just forever. Cancelling a job is often nearly impossible. I would like to be able to put a file on a usb drive and update the printer. The update using a cable does not work for me. As for improvement, the ability to print 13"x 19" half size architectural prints would really rock. I would like an option to print as cheap as possible in black and white. The ability to press a cancel job button would also be great. I would also like to preview jobs and pick and choose pages to print.

Disappointing

By RButler from Seattle on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The 11x17 flat bed plate was the reason for purchasing this machine and expectd quality and speed. I am really disappointed with the very very slow (45 seconds between sheets) copying, slow printing, and slow scanning process along with the poor printing quality no matter what settings I use. Single sheet feed for copying is another problem. No multisheet copy capabilities. This machine is not recommended for small businesses or for anyone using the machine for graphics and CADD drawings or renderings.

Paper jams are frequent. Upon examining the system I find the sheet in laying inside not engaged by the pick up rollers. There is plenty of paper in the tray. Image quality does not seem brilliant or sharp. I am switching to a 26 pound high quality paper to see if it improves the feed and the image quality. It might be an issue with the paper.

I have bought a lot of printers before, most recently Epson. Not happy, the inks cost a lot and very minimal output of prints. I bought the MFC J6710DW (a refurbished one) and works like a gem and comes with the two year warranty. Not needing the Wi-Fi, just hooked directly and off and running. No problems what's so ever. Loving it, for the price I paid, it comes with a large scanner, 11x17 and 8.5x11 prints dual tray and can copy a stack of papers automatically, so much more. What a convenience. I am very happy with my purchase. Brother has a printer to suite your needs. I would say just check them out.

Just started using this inkjet on a regular basis! Works very well! However, I have two problems with it. It might not be a problem for someone else but for me it is. The printer is set up to be used in a fax mode position. When printing a copy I must press the copy key and number of copies I want a few times before it will accept it. After wards I have to sequence the pages so they will be in the right order. Otherwise copies are very clear and readable.

This has been an excellent purchase for me. I bought this on the recommendation of a rep at an office supply store, and am glad that I followed his advice. It was easy to set up, and is easy to use. I haven't used the fax function yet, but am satisfied with the printing capabilities (although to be sure, it's not a laser printer), especially being able to print color 11 x 17. The scanner has also yielded surprisingly good scans. I would highly recommend this printer for a small office. The price is very reasonable for its capabilities.

MFC-J6710DW

By Gmcec from Benton Harbor, MI. on 07/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pretty good machine with nice features for the money. I really expected to have to pay about twice as much for the same functionality. Worked great until the 8 1/2 X 11 paper started running down to the lower half of the tray. Then the machine started picking up 2-6 pages for every page I tried to print. I contacted support and they gave me directions to clean the rollers with alcohol, but that really didn't correct the problem. I filled the paper tray to the top and that seemed to have resolved the issue (for now).

The ink life is very good and the color or B&W clarity is excellent. I use this printer in a personal business and personally and it has performed flawlessly.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I produce my church's newsletter and before, I had to print each page, turn them over to print the other side of it, then collate ave staple four sheets of paper. This process usually took a couple of weeks to complete. But with my Multiple-functional printer, the process has been reduced to 3-4 days. This because tha printer automatically prints both sides of each page and the document is already collated so all I have to do is the stapling! And there is less waste of paper. The down side is the amount ink used and it's cost.

I use this mfc for my home business and the bonus is that I can print from anywhere in my home. Another thing I like is having two paper cassettes that switch automatically. Have had only one paper jam in 6 months and was easy to clear and has worked perfect since.

GREAT PRINTER

Laser like b/w printing, great color when used, and affordable inks. inks have simpler level indicator and change easily for self servicers. Only regret is it wont scan 11x17 like the bigger version i have in the shop.

GREAT, INEXPENSIVE MFC 11X17 IN ALL FUNCTIONS

By JT43 from BOYNTON BEACH, FL on 05/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have an hp 7000 13x19 printer, but needed an 11x17 scanner-copier. The HP 11x17 all in 1 does not scan-copy 11x17, but the Brother mfc-j6710dw does 11x17 in all functions. The hp 7000 may have "slightly" better color quality if you want high quality large photo prints, but again it's only a printer. The color quality of the 6710 is fine for alll other aplications. I now use the 6710 for almost everything. One thing to keep in mind is the low cost. Setup was easy and the speed is better than most inkjets I have used. Some users say that the 6710 is large & bulky. "DUH" it's an 11x17 all in 1, with two 11x17, 250 sheet paper trays. Some say the paper trays are flimsly & dificult, but you are loading 250 sheets into a precision machine, not throwing them in a trash can. I use all functions (except fax) and they work flawlessly. I produce 24x36 engineering drawings and use the 6710 to print half size proof prints. The prints are clear, with fine lines & legable. The xxlarge ink carts are easily replacable, reducing ink cost & changing time. For a lot more money, you may get a better machine, but for the cost/service ratio, I beleive this MFC (or other Brother 11x17 mfc's) are the best deals available.

A Great Product So Far

By jayindep from Independence, MO on 05/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had the same Brother mono laser printer for day-to-day business printing for several years but for some reason have always had HP all-in-ones for scan, fax, copies, etc. After the last HP died a premature death to to a miniscule plastic part failure, as had the others before it, I woke up and smelled the coffee. If this machine performs as well as the laser for as many years, I'll be happy. So far it has met all my expectations, and exceeds any HP I've owned in many areas.

First Brother Printer

By rocklady from Nevada on 05/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am pleased with this purchase, the only problem is not being able to see how much paper is left in the tray and the fact that you have to take the tray totally out in order to fill it. The ink last as long time and replacements are easy to replace. Took me awhile to figure out that on manual fax use, a code has to be keyed in before it works, I am not that happy with this feature and see no reason for it.

Best printer ever

By holli2 from chicago, il on 05/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love that i don't need to constantly replace ink cartridges! Their high yield ink is high yield. The software is not intrusive and easy to install. It also holds alot of paper, you don't have to constantly refill the paper. Two sided printing is a breeze! Very good directions included. The only issue I have with this printer is scanning. The scanner leaves a 1/8" blank edge on all sides. But I haven't checked to see if there is a setting to change this. So it may not be an issue.

Great all in one

By DebC from Connecticut on 05/02/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This all in one machine is spectacular overall. It is easy to use if you read the directions. Customer support is great to help you over the technical issues if you have any. I would buy again next time. To improve the next generation: A faster print would be nice. Allow a default for copy size other than ledger would also be nice. It is easy to change but I forget to do it sometimes.

Not as I expected

By ASH2012 from Texas on 04/28/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

As an engineering consultant, I purchased this printer because of its 11x17 capabilities. For the price it has no match out there. However, I am not pleased with the quality of the prints, scans and copies. maybe I am used to laser machines, I don't know. The quality of the scans is so poor and i wonder if it is because I am still using the inks that come with the machine. I will used up the inks and purchase the XXL one to see if the quality will improve, otherwise I will return it and raise money to buy a better machine for good.

Almost worst printer ever purchased

By Anonymous from Baltimore, MD on 04/20/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've been reading all the glowing reviews about this same model and wonder how my could be so lousy. To start it pulls multiple sheets of paper and prints a portion of each print across them all. The manual feed recognizes a sheet of card stock some times for 5 prints in a row then it won't recognize the card stock and I have to keep pulling it out and re-feeding it.

Slow and Paper Jams!

By AptMgr from West Babylon, NY on 04/05/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use this printer about two to three times per week, very low volume, mostly for letters and envelopes. The printer is slow and almost always jams when I manually feed single envelopes. I have become extremely frustrated with this printer considering how little I use it and how frequently it jams! The duplex printing does work well though.

Large format and network friendly

By swimvball from San Antonio, TX on 04/05/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been very pleased with this printer/scanner. I need to work with 11"x17" format and this scanner works very well for that. The large format also works well for scanning multiple smaller documents at once and then split each document out as needed. The printing has been fast and reliable. Ink is also reasonably priced compared to competitors. Brother does a very good job making their MFC printers true network capable printers. The print server is in the printer so unlike "networkable" printers from other manufactures I do not have to connect the printer to a Window's computer to be able to print via the network. I run Linux, Mac, and Windows desktops and can print using the network printing from each of them. I have also been very impressed with the printer administration features provided in this device. It has a lot of enterprise level features available to make remote administration of this device a joy. I would definitely be willing to use this printer in a small office environment.

I purchased the MFC-J6710DW with some scepticism. But the price was nice and I was fed up with All-in-One machines from a well known competitor. My wife does semi professional art and graphic work and do health care reaserch so we are constanatly using different formats, papers and colors. This machine handles it all and then some. Very dependable and much cheaper to use than other machines.

I replaced another brand printer with the MFC-J6710DW and couldn't be happier. It came right up on the in-house wireless, took just a few minutes to get all of the computers around the house to be able to use it and it just works. I was almost suspicious because it worked so easily, something HAS to be wrong, but it isn't. Keeps on working just fine without dimming the lights like my last laser did!

Best Brother Printer I Ever Purchased

By Eclecticart from Florida on 03/30/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my sixth Brother printer and it is as reliable and economical as all the others I have purchased. If you want to save on ink, then any Brother printer will be your best purchase. This printer, though, by far is the most economical printer I have ever owned. I have printed 1000s of pages and have only changed the cartridges once. I use the high yield LC79 cartridges which have proven to be the most cost effective. The print quality is excellent; photos are brilliant and clear. I downloaded the iPrint and Scan app for my andriod phone and tablet and it works wonderfully. I bought this printer specifically because it prints on both sides of the paper (duplex printing) and because I can use 11x17 paper. The enlarge and shrink functions for copies is very useful and the wireless scan feature is a time saver. This is a totally affordable wireless, multifunction printer that does everything any small business can want.

A good printer with the same old problems

By Jalida from Palm Springs, CA on 03/21/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

To begin with, this printer really is a great printer for how I use it. I mainly print documents and for that when printing on the highest settings the documents black text is crisp and sharp. The 2 pictures that I printed with this printer when printed on photo quality paper look like they came from a professional printing service. The (what I consider a huge) problem with this printer is the same as all the other Brother printers that I've owned over the years, it gobbles down ink even when you are not printing. What I mean by that is that I printed 2 color images, which took little to no colored ink. However after the amount of times that this printer cleans the print heads, I am out of colored ink, even though I've only ever printed 2 color images and ALL my documents are printed with only black. At the price of ink today, it's often cheaper to go buy a disposable printer and buy it again when the ink runs out. The amount of ink that this printer uses just to clean the print heads is out of control. And since the printer won't even print with just black when the color cartridges are empty, they basically force you to buy more colored ink to be able to use this printer when just printing black. Again, I printed 2 color pictures, the rest of my documents are always set to black ink only, and yet in the amount of time it takes to replace 3 or 4 black XL cartridges, the colored ink is exhausted due to only the printer cleaning the print heads, which is ridiculous procedure and should be fixed. Other than the extensive use of colored ink when not even printing in color, the printer is a really nice printer and the fax portions works great, I've yet had a problem connecting to any other fax machines with this Brother all in one printer. The scanner is also well done and very fast. Overall the features built into this unit are superb. It's only real downfall to me is how it can use full cartridges of color ink when I'm not even printing color pages, and the absurd price of the Brother ink.

Great 11 x 17 Scanner

By tbonejeff from St. Louis metro-east on 03/21/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this unit for its ability to scan and print 11" x 17." In most respects it does this very well. I would prefer that the scanning software would show each page view as it is scanned, instead of waiting until all sheets are scanned before showing the scanned pages. You have to hope that each page scanned correctly, 'cause you won't know until you finish. Also, I use this mostly to print 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" paper (for music), and I'm apparently stuck using the sheet feeder, as the larger feed tray won't feed this non-standard size, even though the paper fits just fine. It would be so much easier to have the printer feed automatically. The above points made, I am largely pleased. For the cost, the unit is an excellent value, especially with the 11 x 17 scan bed. Since I am the only person using this printer, the somewhat flimsy feel doesn't bother me too much. As others have mentioned, it would be nice if the sheet feeder at the back would allow more than one sheet. But, for the price, I don't think you can object too vigorously.

Very good machine

By Paulb from Colorado on 02/13/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Well I just got off the phone with Brother technical support. I have been using this machine now for about 3 weeks. I am using a wireless setup. I configured it myself. It was fairly easy to do. I am an architect and work from home mainly. I needed a 11"x17" printer with scan capability previously I was using an HP 2800n. This thing scans to my server, uploads to my FTP sharing site. I am using it with both XP and Win 7 this thing is awesome. The only minor issue I had was the black print was coming out grey, I played with the settings for about 2 weeks, figuring it was just a user error. Finally I gave up. I contacted technical support we worked through some issues, in about 30 minutes I am printing as good of quality as my laser. It is so much quieter than my laser or old inkjets. This blows HP out of the water. We will see how it holds up, we have the larger laser in our corporate office. I set that up 2 years ago and it is still trucking. Great product. I am buying 2 more for our remote offices.

Extremely Poor Setup

By Virginia from Tucson, AZ on 01/31/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Wireless setup for this printer was frustrating... about 5 hrs so far. I have set up several wireless printers, and setup for this model was difficult and counter-intuitive (e.g. requires a negative response to override the auto-router search feature). FINALLY, got the router connected. Then, tried to install the printer drivers from the CD. Not successful yet (add-ons not compatible with Windows 7, etc; no drivers listed online). Extremely poor software writing.

Very Nice Printer

By Anonymous from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on 01/15/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been using it for a week now, and I love it. I've used it for just about everything except FAX, including scanning and printing 11x17. Easy to set up. Easy and intuitive to use. Fast. Good control center software, good onboard display and controls. I have experience with a LOT of printers, ever since my first computer in 1979, and so far this is one of the best. Time will tell, though. The bottom line for me is that I can't believe I got such a capable printer for so little money. The weaknesses so far are minor: Poor or nonexistent instructions for the software (but it was fairly intuitive for me, a highly experienced user of new printers and scanners). Flimsy paper output tray (but that seems to be the norm these days). Rather long wait for first page when printing in reverse order (almost 2 minutes when doing a 12-page Word document). And the biggest one... colors, though fairly true-to-life, are generally not very intense. The only time I've gotten intense colors is when copying a photo onto glossy photo paper.

I am in LOVE with my printer.

By Chuck02 from Boise,Id on 10/26/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

From the minute I set up my Brother printer and looked at a test page one of my programs printed out I knew I was in LOVE with my printer. The colors were so true and proper I couldn't believe my eyes. I started to print other things just to marvel at the quality of the print. No matter what the print job, it has preformed with flying COLORS. PUN intended. Large or small each time I print something I seem to challenge the printer in one way or another and it always comes through. I've printed everything from pictures of flowers to letters to friends with pictures embedded in the letters to graphs of data. Each time the printer has preformed perfectly. Even when it run low on ink. It told me in no uncertain terms. I went to the troubleshooting guide (online) and found this wonderful step by step instruction sheet on not only how to replace the ink cartridges but a full range of other user friendly maintenance tips. This speaks well not only for the printer but for Brother as well. As my printer is an "all in one", I have used it to scan and copy as well. It performs both of those functions just as well as it prints. It enlarges and reduces in size a picture with such clarity I can't describe it other than to say it is beautiful. As I said in the beginning I AM IN LOVE WITH MY PRINTER.

Amazing value Multi-Function machine

By Officeserv from Rural Oregon on 09/28/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an outstanding addition to my office. I have had a competitor's 11x17 printer but never had the ledger size scanning ability. While there are a few items that could be improved, everything that is there works well. The installation and wireless setup went smoothly and everything functions as advertised. A bit of a hassle to register software when I began to use it, but I'm pleased with the features and am amazed that a machine with all these specs sells for such a reasonable price! Now, to the negatives: Envelope feeding - one at a time is not a good thing! Also, the output stacking mechanism is flimsy and inconvenient. Other than that, I'm very pleased and give this unit a 5-star rating.

Some improvement needed

By howtow from San Diego area on 09/27/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Copying existing color documents came out with weak colors not nearly as bright as the original. When using the manual feed in the back, it takes quite a long time before you can reuse it. The machine goes through a strange recycle process before a second envelope can be inserted. It was so far impossible to find how to turn off sent fax receipts - - - should be simpler and part of the fax setup menu. It's also been difficult to find the "print last page first" and "collate" commands. However, it has functioned perfectly without jams.

This is the second 11x17 printer I have purchased from Brother. The first one, Model 6490CW was not very good - I believe it was Brother's first attempt at 11x17. This Model J6710DW is a huge improvement, greatly improved quality of prints and copies.

Versatile machine

By SirCobb from Raleigh, NC on 09/21/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

An important feature for our small office is the ability to scan and copy ledger size material in color. The J6710DW does a good job of that and most other functions. Copy quality is good, not great. One drawback is that it does not print envelopes very well. Support offers some work-arounds, but not a fix. Would recommend to a friend with caveat regarding the problem with printing envelopes.

Great Scanner

By RonH from San Jose on 09/08/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The 11 x 17 scanner is great, is fairly quick and works well with the software. As a printer the unit has some quirks with paper handling that need improvement. The single sheet feeder in back does not always feed paper on the first or second try. And you can feed only one sheet! The machine gets confused on feeding paper out of the two trays. If the top one is low or empty, you get an error message that you have to clear by hitting start. Finally, the unit sometimes thinks paper is stuck in it, even if there is none. You have to unplug it and then plug it in to clear the error. If the paper handling quirks were resolved this would be a perfect maching.

Great machine, terrible software

By GregTex from Texas on 08/15/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The printer and scanner work great, haven't used the fax yet. The software is terrible when trying to use Wi-Fi. Had to load and remove and load several times. Always came up with "invalid agrument" when loading program. Tried downloading from Brother's website, takes about 1/2 hour then after waiting all that time the download disappears. Finally got it to work when I manually configured the ports. The scanner is great but only works when I use a USB cable, kind of defeats the wireless concept. Also, when program was installing it automaticaly deleted my Adobe converter and replaced it with Paper Port. If I wanted my converter deleted I would have done it myself

I had my previous Brother MFC for 5 years. Best printer I have ever owned. When it finally gave it up, I went straight for another Brother MFC. Setup was easy. WiFi features are great. Controls commonality with my previous printer is high so there was not much of a learning curve. Works great on my home network. Love the duplex feature and multiple paper size options. It is larger than my old one, but hey, paper size options come at the price of desktop space.

This was my 2nd Brother printer. My first was MFC-240. I loved it. Not only the fact that the ink cartridges are seperate, so you only replace the color that you need to, it is overall a great printer. Even though I replaced my old brother printer, I still kept it, it was still in excellent working condition. I upgraded to this one due to being able to print on up to 11' x 17' paper and also 2-sided printing. I also love that you have 2 paper trays and dont have to change paper of you want to change size. Love IT!!!!!

By Jonah from Houston, TX on 07/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My one-time installation comments Environment is Linksys Router with two Macs running OS 10.x connected wirelessly and one Windows XP Pro SP3 wired and the printer wired to the router. Hindsight after 3.5 Hours for a friend: Hardware: Unit auto runs cartridge check; large black ink had to be reset twice firmly, not hard. Ignore tray error till inks loaded; then tray error disappeared... having prior to inks loaded paper in both. A page prints with color block matrix of smaller blocks. It is these small blocks aligned in rows and columns that should be solid with no lines running through them. Run print alignment page and set alignment settings. Paper size adjusting guides are weak; be gentle with them. No guides to hold paper in rear manual feed; single sheet only. Software: Delete all non-used scanning software supplied with OEM scanners: Brother recommendation; in our case, HP OfficeJet software from the Macs (user did this) and in XP Pro: Start Menu-Programs-HP>uninstall. Machines auto found IP of printer when printer was connected to router; after uninstalls rebooted OS. Auto Run the CD's complete install of software regardless of what appears to be newer software on website. Select wired network connection in this case [printer wired to router-not wireless as Macs are]. Our issue was printing okay with no scanning from Printer or Computer possible. On XP Pro a TwainReset.exe program was run per Brother and software reinstalled on cleaned XP Pro. This did not solve issue right away. Going to Macs and getting them working we went back to the XP Pro and it too was working. Go Figure. Brother's tech support was great.

Not Up to Brother Standards

By gvlral from South Carolina on 07/10/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have a HL-5250DN which has been a work horse with no issues on my network. I can't say as much for the MFC-J6710DW. I have had many partial printouts and many blank sheets. I called support during which they put me on hold and I then wasn't called back even though they had my phone number. I wrote an e-mail listing my issues. The response was I needed to call them on the phone. I have found out that if I start it up before bringing up my network and use their supplied FaceFilter Studio which only prints three formats, I can get it to print consistently. However this leaves a person with all types of printing issues. The problems appear to be software/firmware/driver issues not hardware. I can not speak to how this printer would perform attached directly to a PC as that is not my need.

11" x 17" GREAT IDEA!!!

By LongtimeBrotherUser from So. Cal. on 07/09/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer is incredible. Based on value to have the ability to print and scan 11" x 17" documents from a home printer. Given the opportunity I would have gladly used this in a business setting as well. Great bargain, great value Well Build, I have had zero problems with this and I have had it, since they first came out.

my second remarkable Brother product...:-)

By TheBourneTransparency from Tulsa, OK on 07/07/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned another Brother MFC(laser version) and it continues to be a ultra dependable and easy to use machine covering all my small engineering office printing fax copying and scanning needs....a new client required 11x17 working documents and this new machine has exceeded my expectation and provided the flexibility I needed at a great price. I have owned several hp, canon and epson stand alone printers and this one beats them all in price and quality for the for the CAD and rendering work that we do.

Good value for money.

By Symphonybone from Londonderry, NH on 07/01/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this because my 8 1/2 x 11 scanner died. I chose 11x17 because I frequently deal with sheet music and there is nothing between 8 1/2 x 14 and 11 x 17. Scan quality appears to be good. It reproduces manuscript and printed music well. It also reproduced graphic output from an analytical machine well. Print quality is not quite as nice as my HP Deskjet 7xx, but not bad. Maybe tweaking print settings would help. The printing instructions for double-sided are fuzzy; a little time with the machine will help make it work better, I'm sure. Copying is a combination of scanning and printing. It was able to copy and reprint 11x17 sheets with no problems. Trying to copy slightly oversize music using the "Print to Fit" option resulted in printing that was too small, but with a dialed in reproduction ratio it worked OK. I didn't try to copy single sheets to make a double-sided 11x17; looks like it might be cumbersome. The black cartridge supplied with the machine did not last very long. Considering the price, it's really got good capabilities. To do everything I want would cost 10x as much and weigh 10x as much. Great home office all-in-one.

Needs some work

By USSRangerVet from Spirit Lake, ID on 06/07/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I bought this primarily for it's large scanner bed. It works quite well for that with a minor problem. When paper is placed against the left/top alignment guide, the scan does not start right at the left/top of item being scanned. Paper type selection is very limited. Does not handle photo paper feeding from a tray very well. The extra sheet feeder is hard to put paper in. Frequent "fail to feed" errors. It is also very hard to get paper to align properly. Frequently the paper comes through slightly skewed. Extremely difficult to get both sides aligned properly when needing to print on both sides. When doing multiple sheets or sides, it is necessary to wait until machine goes through its cycling before putting paper back in the feeder. Feeder can only handle one page at a time. A serious drawback. Needs: Machine needs to register the paper precisely from the extra sheet feeder. The extra sheet feeder should be able to handle at least 20 pages of paper.

worst printer ever used

By Stouffer21783 from Smithsburg, MD on 04/18/2011

Bottom Line:

Color printing is it so distorted, red is light pink, royal blue shows up as light baby blue. I tried to print a flyer of a red brick house, the royal blue sky was barely blue, the red brick house looked very light pink and the green grass was just sick.
