I have had this camera for over two years. Over a vacation I took over 1000 pictures and a few videos and only had to charge the battery once. The image quality is great. It has a lot of features I have not really used yet.

Excellent Camera

By Crimson782 from Undisclosed on 06/23/2014

Pros:

Superior Build Quality, Vibrant Colors, Super-sharp Images, Great Picture Settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been using this camera for 2 years now. I find that it is very easy to use. There are a lot of amazing settings on this camera, and they are easy to figure out. This camera does not come with a paper instruction manual, but it does come with one to load onto your PC. I did just that and read it, and had no trouble figuring out all of the settings. I truly wish I could download a photo with this review. I have done numerous photo shoots for my family, and now have other's asking me if I do it professionally. My latest subject was my 6 month old baby. I took over 300 photos, and only 3 were blury...not bad considering my subject doesn't stop moving! Colors are vibrant, images are clear. The auto focus does not take that long unless your subject continues to move (then set to sports mode or HQ setting). Hold down the button half way, and it quickly adjusts. I absolutely love this camera!

Just what I needed

By Frost from Rock Hill SC on 06/02/2014

Pros:

Fast Auto-focus, Super-sharp Images, Superior Build Quality

Cons:

Flip Up Flash

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Got it in 2012 and love it! Point and shoot before an DSLR any day. Has more features than I thought, but you don't need to use them unless you really want to. The AUTO option works just fine for most shots. Needed a new camera, but was trying to stay away from the DSLR and I am glad that I did.

dont waste your money

By Montana from Montana on 02/28/2014

Pros:

Super-sharp Images, Fast Auto-focus

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera because I love to take pictures of all the wild life in our area. I wanted a good zoom That plus when the grandkids are here I always have a camera ready on short notice for the cute things that happen. well the camera was really clumsy to hold and the flip out LCD screen was terrible. It wobbled and just the slightest movement it would move and then you lost what you were trying to see. The built in view finder was ridiculous. You couldnt see through that if you tried. The other bad idea was that you have to manually flip up the flash option. If you forget and you are in a dark place you have just lost your precious moment. I returned the camera and found something else with better options.

Wonderful Camera with a loud zoom.

By MaxBird from Overland Park, KS on 01/03/2014

Cons:

Poor Low-light Performance, Loud Zoom Noise, Heavy/bulky

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The powershot sx 40 hs is my new favorite camera! i love everything about it except for: the zoom noise, the time it takes to focus, and the weight. the good things are: the image quality, THE ZOOM, the ease of use, and all of the cool functions and options. i photograph birds and nature. it is a quick, fun, and easy camera to use. it really took the term Point and Shoot into account. over all great camera. some good ad-ons are the price and the slow-mo.

"Fan"tastic Camera

By TexasRangersFan from Texas on 01/01/2014

Pros:

Durable, Simple Controls/menu, Nice Features/settings, Good Low-light Performance, Lightweight/portable, Excellent Image Quality, Easy To Use, Good Battery Life

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned this SX50 for more than one year. I also owned the SX30 (sold to another Rangers fan) AND the SX40 which I still use. have taken approximately 500 GB of pictures with these 3 cameras, mostly at Rangers games. 10 FPS on the SX50 cranked it up to 300GB this season alone, because of RAW mode. 3 great cameras. The SX30 was purchased during the AL Championship Series and captured the moment ARod struck out, sending the Rangers to the 2010 World Series. It's shortcoming was the "continuous" mode, not being fast enough an no RAW mode. When the SX40 came out, it included 8 frames per second, solving the "continuous" mode that I needed. When the SX50 came out, camera RAW was included, making this the perfect camera. The zoom on all 3 cameras is outstanding. My seat in Rangers Ballpark is in Section 2xx just beyond first base. I have some great head shots of all 3 outfield position players. I've got some fine pictures of stealing of second base, one of an airborne Home Plate umpire trying to avoid a baserunner stealing home. I can't imagine what the SX60 will bring. Bulb maybe? I keep looking for a reason to go with a DSLR over the SX50 and can't find one yet.

Who knew a Canon could fit into a Coach?

By DCharleneNix from Asheville, NC on 12/17/2013

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Excellent Image Quality, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu, Easy To Use, Durable, Lightweight/portable, Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life

Cons:

Heavy/bulky

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am dedicated Canon lover and fan! This camera is not only as handy as a point and shoot, but, works as good as a very expensive camera with replaceable lenses. I was on the balcony at my Daughter's Graduation and zoomed all the way in as close as front row. This was in a huge auditorium. Best of all, it is still smaller and compact. So compact, it fits in my Coach purse! Highly recommend!

Love it BUT

By Em from Rockland, NY on 11/24/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this camera last year and I was amazed by it. I absolutely love it. However, I am forced to give it a 4 starts review because after having it for a little over a year, I already need to service it. Since it's been over a year, it is now out of warranty and I have to pay for the repair. I get a lens error message since it seems the lens is stuck. I have no idea how this happened because I have never dropped it or anything like that. It is a good purchase but I think it shouldn't need servicing so quickly.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was in the market for a new camera that could tie me over till I got better at photography. I went a to a local retail store to and found several that were ready available in the price range I was budgeting myself in. After trying all of them I found myself going back to SX40 for over all speed quality and ease of use. I researched for another week and The Sx40 won out of the top names in the price range. That was 2 years ago and I'm still using it and have decided A DSLR is still not for me and all the weight and baggage I would have to lug around. I will use this camera till it dies and if I can find another it will be mine!!!

Love this camera!

By LJT8969 from Londonderry NH on 09/17/2013

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Easy To Use, Durable, Simple Controls/menu, Nice Features/settings, Excellent Image Quality, Lightweight/portable

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera a year ago to take on vacation. The camera is very easy to use and the pictures come out very clear. The zoom on this camera is amazing! I have taken pictures of wildlife from a distance that look like I am standing right next to them. The thing I especially like about this camera is that you can either look through the view finder or use the LCD. I find it hard to see the LCD in bright sunlight with sunglasses on, so use the view finder for outdoor pictures. The LCD opens away from the camera base and tilts, so you can actually hold the camera over your head and tilt the LCD down so you can see what you are taking. Fantastic feature! I highly recommend this camera to anyone interested in the ease of a point-and-shoot camera that also has some added features. I have taken amazing pictures with the macro lens and also unbelievable pictures of a hummingbird at my feeder with the continuous shooting feature! Love this camera!

Loved it at first, developing some problems

By law from Undisclosed on 09/14/2013

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Good Low-light Performance, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings

Cons:

Lens Errors Frequently, Hard To Focus, Slow From Photo To Photo

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Right out of the box, I had a lot of fun with this camera. It worked beautifully, though the one thing that is hard and I wish could be changed is the abillity to control the focus a bit more (I focus on a certain thing, but the little focus box jumps around onto something else). The zoom is a winner! I've taken photos with this that I've only been able to dream of taking before. The low-light setting is excellent, even in poor lighting. This worked like a dream for easily 6 months, but then I began getting lens errors, and now I am getting a completely fuzzy picture in the view finder when trying to get a picture. This camera has been used a lot, but it has been babied--well cared for, lens cap on when not in use, stored in a zippered case to protect from dust. That said, I would still recommend it, but I am concerned about how long it will last as the lens error actually shuts the camera off, and there is no know reason for this. My 11-year-old has tried this and LOVES it.

LOVE THIS CAMERA!!

By MJH32 from New York, NY on 08/23/2013

Pros:

Easy To Use, Nice Features/settings, Excellent Image Quality, Lightweight/portable, Good Battery Life, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu, Bright Lcd, Durable

Cons:

15 Second Max Shutter Speed With 100 Iso Limit

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love this camera. I've owned this camera for almost 2 years and couldn't be happier with it. I've always been interested in photography but being in college a few years back I was never able to afford a nice camera. Once I got a job out of college this was one of my first purchases, couldn't afford a full DSLR yet and this camera seemed to have everything I wanted. The camera take GREAT photos and has an INCREDIBLE zoom. The image quality come out almost as crisp as a full DSLR and you can't beat the quality and zoom for the price. Great camera for any amateur photographer to learn with and hone their skills. I'm constantly reading articles and tips on how to improve my skills and the camera is always able to do the new things I discover (recently got into HDR photography and the camera has a great bracketing feature). The various modes are great even thought I like to stay in the manual mode most of the time, the high speed shutter feature is great for capturing all the little details of movement in something that happens quickly. The only downside I've discovered with the camera is trying to take space/night photography and only having up to a 15 second exposure and it limits your ISO to 100, but I guess when I save up enough for a full DSLR I'll get past that. One other thing I want to mention which I'm thrilled about is that I accidently left my camera outside ALL night during a rain storm. The next morning I was freaking out thinking I broke my camera, but to my pleasure I opened the battery pack and it was bone dry. The lens was fine and it started right up and took pictures good as ever. The LCD screen has a couple little water spots on it that I would have to learn to live with but after a couple days those dried up and are no longer there. Canon you made a GREAT product here and I couldn't be happier. I'm currently saving up for a full DSLR but will never get rid of this camera, there are just somethings that this camera can do that a DSLR can't (ie the zoom, at least without a crazy expensive lens). Highly recommend this camera for any amateur photographer who wants to learn and discover how to take great pictures. Thanks Canon!!!

Amazing

By Joyfulcalm from Santee, California on 06/01/2013

Pros:

Simple Controls/menu, Excellent Image Quality, Good Battery Life, Nice Features/settings, Good Low-light Performance, Easy To Use, Fast, Lightweight/portable, Bright Lcd, Durable

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Simply put, WOW..the camera takes amazing pics, and has many features that higher end cameras have. The zoom is awesome, especially when you set it on a tripod, I was pleasantly pleased! What fun it was to look at something up close, when I couldn't physically get close, like the moon lol Oh, and the speed between each shot is perfect, especially when you don't want to miss those goofy kids and pets moment, speed and clear shots are very important! Lastly, to assure your photos are perfect, and able to use all the camera's features, with out blur or excessive noise, get a class 10 memory card, not a class 4. You'll be much happier. Have fun!

VERY NICE ALL-AROUND CAMERA

By Bill from Medford, OR on 04/28/2013

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Easy To Use, Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life, Durable, Excellent Image Quality, Bright Lcd, Durable For A Camera, Simple Controls/menu, Lightweight/portable

Bottom Line:

Sharp image quality in all focal lengths, even when lens is wide open. Because image size is so small I shoot most of my photos at widest aperture to make the background as out of focus as possible. Also, I have a tremor in my hands. so when I do macros or shoot in dim light, the image stabilizer is a great help. Very handy to carry around. I use a wrist strap rather than the neck strap that it come with.

Cons:

The Alaska cruise was planned and I needed to upgrade from my trusty AE-1, I went to buy an EOS Rebel. When I tried the SX40HS and realized that I did not have to change lenses... I was sold. I could have the focal length in a point and shoot. Great performer. Picture quality is outstanding. Weight of camera did not negatively impact the excursions. The camera is easy to use, easy to operate, ergonomic and intuitive... although the features are plenty and more than I may ultimately use. The results are outstanding!!

This is truly a "goto" camera. The fact that it outputs its video via HDMI, makes for portability, ease of use and instant viewing after the shot. I have used this for multiple video events and shared upon completion of the event. It is a hit, and i bet a few more cameras were sold right after I did this. The picture quality rivals SLR quality, without the price.

Excellent Camera

By GA Photog from Atlanta, GA on 03/22/2013

Pros:

Excellent Zoom Lens, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality

Cons:

Heavy/bulky

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Have used the SX40 at home and traveling to France, Spain and Israel. Used primarily in auto mode but also have used manual mode for special situations. Produced excellent shots and videos in a variety of settings. The zoom lens is beautiful, just to test it, I did a max zoom on 2 birds standing on Masada ruins about 150 feet away and they came out crisp, clear and in focus. Picture quality in a variety of settings, from French & Spanish cities to Pyrenees mtns and Israeli deserts were all great in auto mode. Should say that I have had Canon digital cameras for years now and therefore are used to their controls, however I find them easy to use and straight forward. And I have never read the user guide, just use it for reference. I Have another camera from a different mfr that has now been relegated to backup status. Only downside is the size of the camera. It is not heavy but considerably larger than the normal digital model, had to get used to not being able to carry a camera in a belt case. This is why satisfaction received 4 stars instead of 5.

SX40 Really Is All That

By canonfanforlife from Spokane, WA on 03/17/2013

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Good Battery Life, Bright Lcd, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Based on the way Canon Customer Service treated my wife and I when we had a lens error problem with our SX160 (Canon replaced our camera), we bought a SX40 to go with our Canon A3100 and SX160. We now think that we have a great combination of Canon cameras: A small point and shoot that is easy to carry; A relatively small point and shoot with a 16X zoom lens; And a relatively large point and shoot with a 35X zoom lens. We think of them as our "small, medium and large" cameras that meet all our picture taking needs from macro to far away. But, bottom line, it is the Canon Customer Service that keeps us buying Canon cameras. We have taken pictures and videos that we like with half a dozen different cameras but no camera maker has treated us as well as Canon, plus we just plain like our Canon cameras. One problem, at this stage I'm convinced that the SX40 has features I may never come to understand but that does not prevent us from taking great pictures with it. My dear wife is already planning a new trip/adventure that will include all three of our Canon cameras: The A3100 will be in her purse, the SX160 will be in a harness on my chest and the SX40 will be in our camera bag for those shots that require features not available with our A3100 and SX160. Truth be told, we could probably take all the pictures that we want to take with our new SX40 but what the heck, why not use all three of them just for the fun of it? And, so far, when we look at our pictures, we can't tell which picture was taken with which camera because all three of them give us great pictures.

Great Camera

By daylebread from Spring City, TN on 02/15/2013

Pros:

Nice Features/settings, Excellent Image Quality, Good Battery Life, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu, Durable, Lightweight/portable, Easy To Use, Bright Lcd

Cons:

Nothing Negative To Say!

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned the rebel, the sx15 and the sx30. They are all good cameras. The sx40 is a great camera. I travel a lot over sea and this camera with its exceptional zoom is amazing. At maxed out zoom, I get great pictures without having to use a tripod. I find it to be easy to use; it takes wonderful pictures in day light and at night. I rarely have to use the flash in low light settings. I consider it light weight, not bulky and it travels well. The battery is a plus. I get well over 300 shots on one charge. Over all this is a great camera.

Awesome!

By Steve from Dover, PA on 02/12/2013

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Excellent Image Quality, Good Battery Life, Lightweight/portable, Simple Controls/menu, Easy To Use, Nice Features/settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great camera with an amazing telephoto lens. I mainly shoot with a T2i (when is the T5i coming out?), but decided not to lug it, the accessories, and the telephoto lens (28-300) that I use to Jamaica. Instead I brought this camera with me. The pictures that it took were nothing short of incredible. In fact, some of the shots I took as the sun was going down over the water were so good, the resort is using them on their website. My only complaint is that it is not always able to focus in low light perfectly. I recommend that you take multiple pictures just in case. Of course, that is as much a function of the lighting as it is of the camera. I haven't pulled the trigger on the new SX50, because this camera is so good.

Huge Zoom!

By mlo68 from Undisclosed on 01/22/2013

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Good Battery Life, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings, Easy To Use, Simple Controls/menu

Cons:

Poor Low-light Performance, Flimsy Construction

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is amazing. First of all, it has impressive image quality from the relatively small sensor, which probably means DIGIC 5 is doing its job really well (eliminating noise, correcting lens distortion, etc). The 24mm wide angle is superb for indoor shooting. The 840mm telephoto is WAY beyond what most people will ever need, and well beyond the ability to get a blur-free handheld shot (even with the IS). The slow-motion VGA movie mode (120 fps) is AWESOME! My only gripes are that this camera is nearly as big and heavy as my XTi DSLR, the plasticky body feels cheap and low-light performance is mediocre (even with handheld night scene).

Bottom Line:

Have owned camera since August. Have owned several other brandname cameras with various megapixels and zooms, but favorite had been a Canon SX120 for several years. Had finally decided to upgraded and researched this camera. Eventually purchased it and have not been disappointed. This camera takes really good photos in auto mode, but the more I was willing to experiment with other settings and functions the more I enjoyed this camera and the quality of the photos. This camera requires a little patience and willingness to experiment butis well worth the time and money.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am not a professional photographer but decided to take pictures as a hobby. I researched many cameras and after checking reviews and videos decided this was the camera for me. I absolutely love it! This camera is Canon's best for amateur photographers. It is easy to use, the zoom is wonderful, and the pictures are beautiful. The only issues I have is learning the correct settings and knowing which and when to use them. This is a user issue and I learn everyday. I suggest liking Canon's Facebook page. The admin and personnel answer any question you have and provide wonderful tips and tricks. I will always use Canon, their products are great

Great but not Amazing

By Alice S. from Undisclosed on 11/25/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

From the minute I saw this camera, I knew this was the camera I wanted to buy. It was pretty expensive though. I bought it went it first came out and like most all cameras the price has now gone down on it. Let me just say the video part on the camera is amazing! The images are very sharp. As for the actual camera part, its good but not great. One thing that really bugs me about this camera is the focus. If you try to take a close up shot on let's say a flower, it won't focus right, and the flower becomes blurry. It makes me extremely frustrated when it does this because i love to take close up shots. The zoom is very good. I've taken many beautiful shots of the moon, and even some close ups of Mars! Over all the camera is a pretty easy going camera, just a few here and there minor things but in total I think it's a great camera.

Slooowww shot to shot time

By Bob from Undisclosed on 11/25/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Nice camera. Shot to shot time is horribly slow - in the range of two seconds. Focusing could be quicker too. The zoom is great, love the optical viewfinder, and the twist screen is great for shooting over crowds or down low. I'd buy something else next time though, because of the slow shot to shot time.

Purchased For My Cancun Trip

By JP from Undisclosed on 11/16/2012

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Easy To Use, Bright Lcd, Durable, Excellent Quality Animal Portraits, Simple Controls/menu, Lightweight/portable, Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life, Excellent Image Quality

Cons:

It Would Be Better To Have Brass Threads Filters, Missing Features/settings, It Would Be Nice To Have The Raw Feature, Controls Are Easly Pushed Accidentally., Bulb Feature Would Be Helpful

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros: This camera is loaded with features, Zoom is incredible, excellent quality at full zoom range, easy to get around in the menu/settings. I purchased this camera the day before leaving to Cancun Mexico, I took around 1000 images, beach, high sun photos, low light, daytime, dusk, after dark, in caves, bird portraits, small creatures. I was rushed most of the time, i am amazed how well they turned out. I own the SX10IS, SX30IS, this camera is an excellent addition to the PowerShot lineup.

Just What I Wanted

By Tony P. from Ohio on 11/04/2012

Pros:

Durable, Simple Controls/menu, Excellent Image Quality, Good Battery Life

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had this camera for aout 6 months now and I am very pleased. It is very easy to use and takes great looking pictures. I do wish that it came with an owners manual so I could look things up if needed. I went ahead and printed one off that I keep in a three ring binder. There are to many options for me to remember, so i need to keep looking back to check on how to do all the different settings. I am also pleased on the length of the lens because you can really zoom in nice and close on your subject.I do have a little problem when I use the macro,I seem to get a lot of blurry shots. But that could just be me.The battery lasts a long time plus I always carry an extra one just incase I would happen to need it.I also like all the promps I get like when I need to raise the flash up.Overall I would recommend this camera to anyone.

A step down...

By Nells from New England on 10/24/2012

Pros:

Super Zoom!!, Easy To Use, Durable, Simple Controls/menu, Good Battery Life

Cons:

Too Many Blurred Photos For No Appearant Reason, Viewfinder Is Too Small, Poor Low-light Performance

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have been using Canon's "super zooms" for a long time now. I was not happy about the switch to a battery pack, but so far, the supplied battery has been great. Holds a charge for a very long time (NOTE I use the viewfinder most of the time). But NO PRINTED MANUAL! (sigh...) I have always found these cameras to have easy to use controls. I also LOVE the LCD screen... you can keep it stowed away, or position it many ways when you do need it. There is one major problem with the SX40 - blurred photos. I do nothing different with this camera than with my older ones, and I have had many ruined photos because for some reason the camera can't focus fast enough. I tend to wonder if as the zooms get longer, the lenses get slower. I take a lot of train photos, and some of my best shots have been ruined, and I have, at times, wanted to throw the stupid thing right at the train and watch it get crushed... As much as I like Canon cameras, this one has been a major dissapointment. The photos that DO come out in focus are indeed good. But there is still a low-light issue. These cameras seem to dislike low light, and unless you have some advanced skills to overcome it, you get less that great photos. Also, the viewfinder is WAY too small. It is very hard to see through. Another bad change. So, I hate to say it, but for the first time, I have to give a rather negative review of a Canon camera.

I HATE auto tracking

By don from Maryland on 10/08/2012

Pros:

Good Battery Life

Cons:

Complicated Controls/menu, Poor Image Quality

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Camera is not intuitive and user can be over-whelmed by features that only take up space and don't really seem to improve photo quality. I've been searching for instructions on how to disable certain features but the manual doesn't provide the information. Image quality is not as good as my old PowerShot. Disappointed in this camera and will find a replacement asap.

Very pleased

By sportsdad from Dallas Tx on 09/27/2012

Pros:

Excellent Image Quality, Easy To Use, Good Battery Life, Nice Features/settings, Lightweight/portable, Simple Controls/menu, Durable, Bright Lcd

Cons:

Dim Lcd, Poor Image Quality

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this to use to take action shots at my kids sports events. A few pictures are still blurry but for the most part they are clear. I have also video recorded football games. The video have good picture quality the only down side is that the clips are limited to approx 15 min. I have to sometimes make a 2min or less clip to record a youth football quarter then have a program to merge them. I bought this after being told the SLR are sensitive. I have no regrets in buying this camera. I have had great success with it. If you were able to record a few more mins of video I would have given this all 5 stars.

took me a little time to ...

By STAMP GRAM from Undisclosed on 09/24/2012

Pros:

Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life, Excellent Image Quality

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

took me a little time to catch on to operating this camera esp using all the spec settings...a little bulky, but i wanted to step up to a more advanced camera so I was willing to adjust..After a month or so I was having prob getting the zoom to operate properly but I attributed it to my lack of expertize and the size of the camera. the lever to zoom out and in was tricky for me to locate at times and i missed some pics...as time went on and as i became more familiar with the camera i realized there was a prob with the mechanism and ret the camera under warranty...when you spend that much on something always get the extended warranty. prob a fluke with that camera... but i can ret to the store and pick out another camera of equal or lesser value...WILL MOST LIKELY BUY ANOTHER CANON SX 40 because the pics i took were really great when it was functioning properly

I've had the SX40 for about 3 weeks and would have been completely satisfied had I not just heard that the SX50 was just released, Should have waited. A feature I think the SX40 should have had is a way to save a magnified photo on the camera while it's being viewed.

Another good purchase

By kschey from Chciago on 09/20/2012

Pros:

Ta Manual Settings A Major Plus, Easy To Use, Adjustable Lcd Angle, Can Use External Flash, Good Battery Life, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings, Excellent Zoom Range, Simple Controls/menu, Faster Frame Rate

Cons:

Needs A Control/front Dial Like In The New G15, Needs A Bigger Lcd Display, No Raw

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The primary reason I wanted the camera is related to the fact I can use an external flash, and the added bonus is that it has a great zoom range. The SX40 HS is a very capable camera, its photo quality is excellent especially up to a 11x14 inch print and packed with a lot of features. The 4 complaints I have are, 1)no RAW function (Yes I am aware that the New SX50 HS has the RAW function), 2)cost of the Canon batteries are little to high for my liking through their online store, 3) the availability of the battery in the brick and mortar stores is very limited or non existence , 4) need a special adapter to use filters on the camera, the thread is an odd size.

Excellent but with a few flaws

By Plentyzero from Encinitas, CA on 09/17/2012

Pros:

Excellent Image Quality, Easy To Use, Simple Controls/menu, Lightweight/portable, Good Battery Life, Nice Features/settings

Cons:

No Raw, Poor Low-light Performance

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

An excellent camera but not quite a DSLR yet (perhaps in another 2-3 generations), but the all in one bridge cameras are vastly improved. Weakenesses were the weak AWB, macro not all that great, does take stitch shots but doesn't edit in camera, and no RAW (the most disappointing of all). Camera does struggle in dimmer light situations. Nosie levels are excellent. To its credit, most of these shots would have been impossible without it's super 800mm lens and excellent image quality with the new Canon processor. Battery durability was good with over 450 shots taken, but I also turn the camera off between every shots. But the potent zoom and Canon excellent image quality make up for the rest. I'd give the camera a 4 out of 5.

Excellent Film SLR Replecement

By Gary from New England on 09/09/2012

Pros:

Easy To Use, Good Low-light Performance, Bright Lcd, Great Lens, Lightweight/portable, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings, Excellent Viewfinder

Cons:

Complicated Controls/menu

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The SX40HS is my first digital camera and it is great. It does everything my old film SLR did and much, much more. The 35x zoom lens is amazing. If you include the 4x digital zoom, it can go from wide angle to 120x with just one compact lens. The LCD viewfinder does an excellent job replacing the SLR's thru-the-lens viewfinder. The owners manual is easy to follow and understandable. I have only owned it for two weeks, but it has performed flawlessly and has taken pictures that have amazed me. I recommend it without hesitation.

I'm Still Being Amazed by this Superzoom

By Therealmagicjack from Benbrook, TX on 09/05/2012

Pros:

Easy To Use, Great Button Positions, Good Battery Life, Good Low-light Performance, Nice Features/settings, Simple Controls/menu, Excellent Image Quality

Cons:

Smaller Lcd Screen Than Others

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I spent a week researching point-and-shoot superzooms before purchasing this camera. The pool narrowed down to two cameras quite quickly and I had to really debate which to choose. If you've been doing any researching as well you probably already know what other camera I'm referring to. I picked this camera because, first of all, it's Canon, and secondly the power of the zoom capability. I'm an outdoor photographer so the 35X optical zoom was very appealing. I can now say that I'm very happy with my decision. This is the best digital camera I've ever owned. So far I've hardly dug into the various manual settings and programs this camera is capable of since full auto so far has served me perfectly. This thing has an intelligence that processes the perfect picture every time. Even photos that I think there's no way it's going to come out right ends up being exactly that. If you've been researching like I did and are debating between this camera and the probable other, I recommend choosing this one. Most reviewers mention the extensive video capabilities of the other but the Canon SX40 HS takes great high def. video and has all the needed options so that's covered. Plus, this is a camera. If you wanting something for video, get a video recorder. If you wants something for photography, this is the one to choose. Canon's color accuracy and photograph processing is second to none, period.

One for all and all for one!

By Liketotravellite from San Diego, CA on 09/02/2012

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Lightweight/portable, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality, Good Battery Life, Best Vacation And All Around Camera

Cons:

Lcd Size

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We love to travel and take pictures. We also live in a beautiful city and love to take the camera with us when we enjoy a nice day in San Diego Ca. I purchased the SX40 after extensive research. I wanted one camera that could take near DSLR quality images. Combined with an long zoom lense and HD 1080p video with autofocus! Basically I now have one device to take everywhere and we get excellent results. We just got back from a month long mediterranean trip and the pictures and video produced were so good the almost look like they were in 3D. Colors are the most lifelike you can get and the pics were extremely sharp. The Flash works very well with true colors even with a little distance between you and the subjects. The zoom performed excellent on pictures and on video. The only thing you need to bring is the charger and an extra SD card because you will love to keep shooting with this camera. Battery life is great also. Plus you get some built in fun features like a fisheye lense. The Digic5 produces DSLR quality images and video. The only thing I would like to see improved is the size on the LCD and a auto stitch feature like another brand has.

Pros:

Good Battery Life

Cons:

Poor Image Quality

Bottom Line:

almost half of my photos came as a blur, may be I am not using right settings, but I missed already so many fun photos because of that. I had Power Shot S80 for 8 years, and never had a blur photos at all, I loved it so much, but this camera some times irritates me, I don't think I can send it back, my 30 days expired today :( I think. ... If I could exchange it, I would go for Rebel now defiantly.

I love it but

By AMDMan from Willard, NC on 08/25/2012

Pros:

Excellent Image Quality, Easy To Use, Simple Controls/menu, Good Battery Life, Lightweight/portable, Good Low-light Performance, Durable

Cons:

Missing Features/settings, Iso Restriction And Lack Of Superfine Resolution

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love it but, it does have ISO restriction for long exposure times. Manual control function should give full ISO, Aperture and shutter control. I own the Canon S3IS and still love it. Great picture quality for 6MP and still better than some cameras with higher MP/resolution. I wanted cmos sensor and longer zoom in an all in one/P&S camera. Still a few minor flaws I hope that Canon will address in a future firmware update. I have recently started taking night-time sky photos and would like better control of manual functions. At least ISO 400 at slow shutter speeds I realize I could go full DSLR but costs are more than I can afford for camera and assorted lenses. I'd like the Superfine jpeg resolution like on my S3IS back too.

I also have a EOS Rebel Xsi which is great as well, but am looking to upgrade to better zoom to compete with Powershot SX40 zoom..

Great High-End Point-and-shoot camera

By a nature observer from California on 08/16/2012

Pros:

Good Battery Life, Bright Lcd, Good Low-light Performance, Nice Features/settings, Lightweight/portable, Excellent Image Quality, Great For Shooting Wildlife/nature/ People/movies

Cons:

It Has Difficulty Focusing Sharply Sometimes

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been using the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS for about 4 months and have been very impressed and delighted by its super-zoom, Full HD videos, and photo quality. I've taken many videos and photos of nature, wildlife and special events with it with good results. Its super vivid mode makes the photos and videos very vibrant and beautiful especially when shooting outdoors in the sun or when the lighting is good. Indoor shots are good. Night hand-held shots are quite satisfactory as well. It's ability to prevent camera shakes is quite amazing and I can often take clear shots of the moon even without a tripod. Closeup shots and videos are good. The "zoom framing assist" function is really helpful when the camera is zoomed out and you want to focus on or locate a moving subject. Recently I discovered an unexpected function which I do not recall reading about in its manual. It was nighttime and I was outside with a flashlight and my Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. I saw a few racoons going into the bushes. Since it was dark, I raised the camera's flash and held the shutter button down halfway so that I can immediately take a shot when I see and focus on the racoons. To my surprise and great delight, when the shutter button is held down halfway and its flash is raised up, the camera's flash actually gives off a continuous light. I was using the camera's light to search for the racoons.

Fun, great photo's, simply awesome

By Wildphoto1 from Idaho on 08/14/2012

Pros:

Excellent Image Quality, Lightweight/portable, Durable, Good Battery Life, Easy To Use, Bright Lcd, Nice Features/settings, Simple Controls/menu, Good Low-light Performance

Cons:

Should Have Filter Threads

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After owning the S1, S2, S3, S5, SX10, SX20, all of which I enjoyed shooting this camera is by far the best of the bunch, the image quality is so much better than the rest, I like the long zoom for bird photography and again the images are great. I wasn't sure about the battery after being able to just pop in AA batteries when ever needed but the battery life has been very good and I find that the 1 extra battery has been plenty for any weekend of shooting, the flash works very well and I also have the 270 ex II flash which is awesome and doesn't take up much room in my bag. I wouldn't mind having an owners manual for when I do have a question but I use a photo bert cheat sheet and that helps and is easy to carry in the field. I wish that it had filter threads, I have the adapter to attach a filter but you can't use the lens hood with it. I really like the controls they are really not that much different than older models. the image stabilizer is amazing, I have a bogen tripod but seldom use it. I took some video at my church inside of my grandkids on stage singing and I and my family were amazed at the quality of the video this is something that I need to use more often. The camera is a lot of fun to use and I look forward to getting out often with it.

Best non-Pro Safari Camera

By Safari Enthusiast from Santa Barbara, CA on 08/11/2012

Pros:

Nice Features/settings, Easy To Use, Lightweight/portable, Bright Lcd, Excellent Image Quality, Good Low-light Performance

Cons:

Complicated Controls/menu

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Upgraded to SX40HS in 2011 following previous favorite tourist safari camera the S3IS. SX40HS is THE BEST camera for weight-conscious safari travel (26 pound weight limit for combined checked AND carry-on). The wide angle really captures those African vistas, and the 35x zoom brings those distant animals almost eye-to-eye with you. Fellow-tourists in our land rovers were quite envious as they juggled their various lenses and DSLR bodies -- missing those "moments" constantly as I snapped away at the leopard in the tree or the bird on the wing. The SX40HS was also perfect for gorilla-trekikng because of its light weight (for carrying up the mountain) and low-light, great zoom, AND video capacities. HOORAY!

Flexible Camera

By SlaterVixen from Detroit, MI on 08/10/2012

Pros:

Durable, Excellent Image Quality, Good Low-light Performance, Easy To Use, Bright Lcd, Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life

Cons:

Lcd Viewport And Lens Not Easy To Clean, Heavy/bulky

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is fun to use especially for my first time using something close to the professionals. My main selling point was colour vividness and having the option to turn that on or off when I want. Low light situations pose no problem as I can adjust settings like IOS, shutter and apperature. I've gotten some wonderful pictures of the moon during the day time and also at night which are clean and as crisp as I could take them. The other modes are also helpful when I want to get right to the point. Macro mode when a photo is taken properly shows superb results when doing image crop tests. The grid helps with keeping the camera in line with the target and is clear on the LCD viewport and in viewfinder mode. Battery life is wonderful as I've had small cameras die within a few hours. This camera has held up for a full day in terms of taking photos. With video mode after using the camera for stills it can last about an hour more for a total of 4 or 5hrs. The compact charger is perfect since I have a small space near the wall. The indicator lights green when it's done and as it mentions on the package it takes an 1hr and 50 minutes or so to charge. So if you are in a hurry this won't be a slow down. The construction is sturdy and not cheap feeling and the outside wipes clean easily. Those are the pros. The few cons I have is that it's small but not small enough to put in a bag or cargo pants pocket so I need to wear it out in the open when I go places. The LCD viewport is a bit hard to clean. I've used a microfiber lens cloth but it spread a finger print instead of cleaning it. Same with the lens (which is 100% my fault). Those are the only cons I have and the pros outweigh them for myself. I do not at all regret making this purchase and am proud to own my first Canon brand product.

Fix the manual speed and ISO limit!

By AnthonyZ from Los Angeles, CA on 07/20/2012

Pros:

Lightweight/portable, Nice Features/settings, Bright Lcd, Good Battery Life, Durable, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu

Cons:

Iso And Shutter Speed In Manual Mode, Missing Features/settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great camera, almost perfect for bridge camera - between compact and DSLR. Only problem is the ISO limit and speed on the manual mode. This issue has been covered by many people, google it to see yourself. This shortcoming took 30% fun out of this camera. Please fix it or at least increase the speed limit or more up ISO to maybe 400 in firmware update. Do something please!

great purchase

By animal lover from St. Paul MN on 07/14/2012

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Good Battery Life, Nice Features/settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera was my very first canon camera, and i absolutely love it. I think it was a great camera for me as a beginner photographer. My favorite part was the lens because how far I could zoom in. Its really nice because you don't have to change the lens every time you take a photo. I think this camera is great for beginner photographers. With a couple of lessens you can become a pro at this camera if your a beginner. It can be confusing at first if your not experienced with the settings. Overall I just love this camera.

Great camera

By Tess from Stockton, California on 07/06/2012

Pros:

Good Low-light Performance, Good Battery Life, Bright Lcd, Nice Features/settings, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality, Simple Controls/menu

Cons:

Heavy/bulky

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this to replace my 10 year-old mid-range digital camera that I absolutely loved. I've fretted over what to replace it with and stumbled upon the sx40 while shopping one day. I picked it up and it felt like my old camera in my hand. It's difficult to really evaluate a camera that's tethered to a store counter, so I took a chance, bought one and brought it home. The pictures that I was able to take the very next day, even without reading the manual, were terrific. Once I actually read the manual and then changed my camera settings and used it the way it is meant to be used, then the subsequent pictures were phenomenal. I have no problems with low light, macro, problems that others have complained about in their review. I'm very happy with this camera! I even found You Tube videos that shows how to use the camera - very helpful indeed.

Good for a super zoom.

By Road Warrior from Nevada on 06/25/2012

Pros:

Flexible (for A Super Zoom), Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality, Durable

Cons:

No Raw Only Jpeg

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I recently replaced my aging Canon S5 IS with the SX40. For me, it filled 2 very specific roles: 1) Work camera (police) 2) Multi day hiking. For work, I only need to capture a representation of the scene with either photos and/ or video; so far this has worked great. My S5 spent over 4 years in a patrol bag getting beat up, tossed around, rained on, snowed on and it still works. That camera should have broke a long time ago which says a lot about Canon. For work, the ability to do macro and telephoto is great in one, relatively small package. Now this is for typical investigations, not forensic use. The second is for backpacking. I have a DSLR but lugging around the camera and lenses it a bit much for multi day trips. I would love to have it, but the extra weight wears on you; this is where I like the SX40. The camera is fairly light weight and somewhat flexible. I at least get to chronicle my adventure with good image quality. If you are a novice, there is an auto setting which the camera will adjust for (mostly) everything for you; however you do have to raise the flash manually. For a non-DSLR this camera had decent low light ability, especially if you use the night scene setting. I was very impressed with the clean shots you get with the night scene setting; it far exceeded my expectations for this type of camera. Check out some reviews online and some of them have sample photos using this setting. Overall it is a nice camera, but dont be fooled, it is NOT a DSLR nor is it a replacement for one. This camera it often referred to as a super zoom, being that it zooms in quite a bit more than a point and shoot camera. Typically the super zoom cameras have better image quality and more features that are easier to access. However, if you are considering either a DSLR or a super zoom, you will be happier in the long run with a DSLR. unless you are not willing to buy several lenses. Other reviewers will state that super zooms are making DSLRs obsolete; that is an ignorant statement. The SX40 is fairly flexible as an overall package but it is very limited compared to a DSLR. I currently shoot a 5D MkII but there are times it is just too much (bulk, weight, convenience, etc.) so a super zoom is just the ticket. BUT, when I want to shoot in low light without a flash, or want to achieve a shallow depth of field, the SX40 just wont cut it (nor will any other super zoom). Even shooting telephoto is better. A cropped shot from my 5D and EF 100-400 is better than the 840 equivalent from the SX40. Quite simply the interchangeable lenses, speed, sensor size (even on the cropped sensor DSLRs) make the DSLR far superior. For a lot of people who just want to capture memories and have a little fun with a camera, then the SX40 is great.

Great camera, take the time to learn to use it

By spookyone from California desert rat on 06/16/2012

Pros:

Durable, Excellent Image Quality, Good Low-light Performance, Simple Controls/menu, Good Battery Life, Easy To Use, Nice Features/settings

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Terrific quality pictures. Optical zoom is more than adequate for everyday tasks. I bought the camera specifically for the Macro mode which is impressive. I am not sure why some reviewers have an issue here, but you must put the camera in macro mode first my friend to get the best benefit. Even when not in macro mode a close shot can be blown up with crystal clear quality anyway. There are some good reviews on the net for this camera where you can be shown how to use the camera and it's features so if you are not into reading the manual you can at least learn it from a video. I enjoy the wider angle too. I am able to compose shots that normally would not get all the subject matter into the finished pic -- but here no problem. Also, the camera is stellar in low light with plenty of iso settings/aperture and shutter variety to get what you need if you tweak it manually (forget point and shoot in auto mode in most cameras and this one is no exception if you really are going for that campfire shot !) Invest in a tripod or learn to stabilize yourself or use the shutter delay on a stationary surface with what's around if you want to get best results in extreme low light. The nicest surprise feature is the slow-motion HD (hey, the HD is full 1080 too ! Wow ! I would think Birders would love this camera for this feature alone and all you sports fans too. Be sure to get the 16GB HD card if you do a lot of that kind of stuff. For a fixed lens camera it's got a lot of value. Next step from this camera in a full feature DSLR with lens interchangeability but get ready for the price jump if that's where you go. For those using the camera after life with a day to day point and shoot it will work but you will miss out on the features if you stay stuck in that mode and will be unhappy that it's bulkier than the any hand held. But worth it dude.

not for macro

By nature enthusiast from Undisclosed on 06/10/2012

Pros:

Good Battery Life, Durable, Lightweight/portable

Cons:

Complicated Controls/menu, Poor Low-light Performance, Poor Image Quality

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Bought camera with a very specific purpose--that of getting good wildlife shots, especially of smaller insects. I agree with Muncie Birder and Fl guy that this camera is very difficult to get to focus on smaller things. Also the images have a very grainy appearance and are not crisp and clear, making cropping almost impossible. This is worse with low light and when using zoom. I expected much better, especially given the price and advertised 12.1 MP.

Pros:

Good Battery Life, Simple Controls/menu, Bright Lcd, Nice Features/settings, Easy To Use, Excellent Image Quality

Bottom Line:

I purchased this camera last fall and it is phenomenal. The zoom is incredible. I've had people using expensive DSLR cameras with zoom lenses asking me for copies of my pics because they are clearer. I'm still learning everything it can do, but I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to take great pictures but doesn't want the expense of purchasing lots of lenses.

Focus is lacking

By Muncie birder from Muncie, In on 06/02/2012

Pros:

Bright Lcd, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/settings, Good Battery Life, Easy To Use, Durable

Cons:

Poor Low-light Performance

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is sold as a super zoom camera. One of the main uses of a super zoom would be to photo birds. This camera about half the time will focus on everything but the bird. It brings up the bird in the view finder as if it is focusing on it but nope. It says it has manual focus. Good luck trying to use that feature. On the screen it shows the distance it is focusing at. I suppose if one has a tape measure and a still image that might work. Nevertheless, if the light is good and it does happen to get the correct focus the fotos are exceptional.

Cons:

Camera Strap Is Annoying

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I just used my camera at a blues festival. It is the first time I've really used this camera. It was amazing. I got shots from far away that look as if I was up close. I took photos with a monopod in the dark and just about all the shots came out great. I used auto features and also programmed it. I was leary of the viewfinder being digital instead of optical, but it is FABULOUS. All the info you need is right there and you can see everything very clearly. Some of the photos were so great, I couldn't believe I took them. LOVE THIS CAMERA

No Hard Copy Manual

By MJK from Undisclosed on 05/21/2012

Pros:

Great Zoom

Cons:

No Hard Copy Manual, Complicated Controls/menu

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I recently purchased the PowerShot SX40 HS and have used it a few times. The pictures I've taken have been fine and the zoom is terrific. Low lighting pictures are not as good as I expected and the LCD is not as bright as other cameras in this price range. My biggest complaint is there is no Hard Copy Manual. The camera has a great deal of versatility if you can find out how to make the adjustments. This means, referring to the manual. Either have a computer handy to look at the disk or print out the 4" x 6" manual. I contacted support and I can't even purchase a manual. I was told that Canon is being environmentally responsible. I am a long time user of Canon products: Cameras, Camcorders, etc.,but I think their saving a few dollars by excluding the Manual is idiotic and will consider other options in future purchases.

Powershot SX40-HS

By Anonymous from Oak Ridge, TN on 05/13/2012

Pros:

Very Good Resolution., Good Balance And Feel In Your Hand., Great Flexibility., Intuitive Menus.

Cons:

Shutter Lag When Using Flash.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is an excellent solution for folks who do not want to be a "pack horse to glass." Its wide range of focus, from 0 inches in macro to 840 optical zoom, provides a flexibility of use that would require several lenses on a DSLR. Given the camera's small size, the resolution is not as good as that which we find in a DSLR; however, the resolution is significantly better than earlier versions of this line of cameras. (Resolution to ISO 400 is quite acceptable. Noise begins to be noticeable at ISO 800.) It has a variety of special functions and a flexibility of settings that , in my opinion, surpass similar cameras of other brands. If I were to recommend improvements, I recommend continuing improving the image resolution--even if the size/weight of the camera must increase, and I would recommend shortening, or eliminating altogether, the shutter lag when using the built-in flash or an external flash.. I use the camera as an everyday tool, from snapshots to serious photography. (I also have a Canon 7D and 40D and a variety of lenses.) I have used it in landscape photography, shooting family and friends, and for nature photography. Last night, 12 May 2012, I used the camera to shoot moths in the local arboretum until late at night, using only the camera--hand-held--and built-in flash. This is a great little camera. Menus are intuitive, and it has a good feel and balance in the hand. I recommend it for your consideration.

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'd like to review this product but it does not come with a manual and the "getting Started" guide does just that...gets you started. It does not explain a 10th of the settings and controls/functions on the camera. I am no camera pro, and I can't figure half this stuff out. I think I'll love the camera once I learn how to use it properly.

A fun superzoom

By JohnG from Escanaba, MI on 05/01/2012

Pros:

Accepts Filters/flash, 35 Power Superzoom, Image Stabilization, Contrast Control Option, Frame Assist, Many Creative Options

Cons:

Small Sensor, No Printed Manual, Autofocus Can Be Slow, Viewfinders Not Sharp

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this camera to supplement by Canon G12, which I like very much. The G12 has a metal body, more manual control dials, better LCD viewfinder and more sophisticated exposure options (including High Dynamic Range, built-in neutral density filter, and more ISO settings). BUT the SX40 adds incredible zoom power, backed up by excellent image stabilization. Build seems solid and camera is easy to hold. The SX 40 is a bit more comfortable for my larger fingers, bigger but not heavy. Macro work requires figuring out some annoying items, like the tendency for the minimum focus range to go up fast as you increase focal length. However, this camera IS capable of very nice macro shots once you learn a thing or two. Cool moon shots also possible. Autofocus is decent but not fast. The ability to add external filters (like a circular polarizer, with Canon adapter) and larger external flash units is a big plus! I don't care about video, but I'm told this camera is good for that.

Love this camera

By Susan from Undisclosed on 04/21/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Purchased this camera a few weeks ago and I am loving it. I still have to learn some of the bells and whistles, but you can still take great pictures on AUTO. The zoom is awesome. I am a novice photographer at best, but this camera is exactly what I was looking for beyond my smaller point and shoot...which I still like very much. The only thing I wish Canon provided was some sort of in-person training class. Not a fan of reading manuals.

A great intermediate camera with a ton of features

By Campjeep from Canal Winchester, Ohio on 04/15/2012

Pros:

Great Vacation Camera

Cons:

No Camera Is Perfect

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is one of my favorite cameras, It feels good holding it in your hands. It is a worthy upgrade from a SX10 SX30 SX110 And it takes a picture as good as my S100 - G11 coming from a point and shoot world never using raw,I am sure a advanced user could get a better picture from S100 - G11 but I am getting good quality photos without a lot of hassle using auto & P mode with the SX40. Very good image quality, good auto white balance, user-friendly design make the SX40 difficult to exceed in a single-lens camera unless you go to the canon G1X.. I was also very pleased with its image stabilization. The SX40 isn't perfect, but no camera is. The most improvement is lower noise even at 200iso and up in my test, with all my cameras except the S100, that said my canon G1X is the best here but it has that huge sensor in it. I am using a 8gb extreme pro sandisk card, I know it is a little over kill here. Note if taking alot of movies get a spare card just in case... The canon speedlite 270EX works great with this cameras hot shoe, I would highly recommend getting one when you can afford it... I mostly take pictures of bear in the Smokey Mountians (CADES COVE) and love chaseing the grand kids around taking their pictures.

Overall satisfied

By FL Guy from Palm Coast, FL on 03/25/2012

Pros:

Shutter Priority, Appature Priority, Adjustable Shutter Speeds, Stablization, 35x Zoom, Manual Focus, 140x Digital Zoom

Cons:

Won't Always Focus On What I Want To Focus On, No Readily Available Lens Filters, Limited Manual Focus

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Overall I am extremely satisfied with my new camera. There are a few things I wish it did better, but that does not take away from my overall happiness with the operation and picture quality of the camera. The main thing I wish it did was allow me to zoom in and focus on close shots. It works from a distance of 10 ft or more most of the time, but almost never on closer objects. I do nature photography, so getting close to the object so it will focus is not always an option. The other is the manual focus. I want to be able to focus on what I want no matter how close or far the object is. Don't force me to zoom out or in and limit my manual focus distance. I take spider photos and it doesn't always allow me to focus on a spider 4 feet away from me because I zoomed to make it fit the picture. But then again, it does pretty much everything else I want it to.

The Powershot SX40 HS is very user-friendly. I consider myself a beginner in photography, but I have already taken "striking" and "amazing" shots. It's a lot of fun to see something that I like, and be able to capture it. My mom got the Powershot SX40 HS, because she likes mine. The software that came with the camera isn't bad either. I use it a lot to edit my pictures.

Best point and shoot I've ever owned

By Hey Moe! from San Diego, CA on 03/24/2012

Pros:

Image Stabilizer Works Good, Serious Pro Quality Glass, @ Around $400 Serious Bang For The Buck

Cons:

Fairly Large For A Point And Shoot, Autofocus A Tad Slow Sometimes

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a semi-pro photographer, but I wanted a good vacation camera that wouldn't require lugging around multiple lenses, flash, etc, but still would deliver high quality pictures. It's a 12.1 mp point and shoot and it's star feature is it's remarkable lens. Only a few years ago a 4.3-150mm, 1:2.7-5.8 USM 35x might have been considered a physical impossibility or been huge $$. Because of it's remarkable lens, it's fairly large for a point and shoot, about the same size as a 35mm film SLR with a 50mm lens. If you want a camera you grab and go and are ready for pretty much anything, this is it. I just got back from Hawaii and never once wished I had a different lens. Mild wide angle to 300 telephoto, it did it all. It's not a pocket camera, but then again it's no where near, say, an EOS series with a long lens. At 12.1 mp, the images are plenty sharp as long as you don't go poster size or do extreme cropping. It's kind of a compromise camera too don't forget - If you want a pocket/purse camera or split second shot timing, this isn't your camera. In a nutshell, great general purpose point and shoot camera boasting some serious Canon technology.

Big Bang.. Small bucks..!!

By Tool Doctor from Metro Atlanta, Ga. on 03/23/2012

Pros:

About Everything..

Cons:

100 Iso Default In Long Exposures

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Never had a camera before Nov. of 11'.. Did my homework with reviews and hit the mother lode with this camera. Printed out the manual and made my own notebood which I studied for two weeks with camera in hand. Not a lot it won't do once you take time to understand just what it will do. Being retired I have time to shoot 30-50 shots a day. Love the zoom for wildlife on my property and find the mode settings work great.. Also love the Auto Exposure Bracketing mode as I have already learned Photoshop and started shooting High Definition Range imaging with the AEB mode and taking it to Photomatix for merge and tonal mapping. For only owning a camera for 5 months I have advanced in photograhpy well IMO and having this camera in my hand with it's capabilties is a major factor.. There are a few things I wish for in capability but I keep in mind I did not purchase a full blown DSLR.. Again.. big bang.. small buck and love this tool in my hands..!!

The pictures are beautiful & vibrant, even on its auto settings. The zoom is incredible - shows so much detail in such clarity. I love all the different options & settings. I love the LCD screen, and the fact that it has a viewfinder. Battery life is great. I have no complaints about this camera. I purchased this camera ...

By PurpleRose from Central FL on 03/15/2012

Pros:

Variable Angle Lcd Screen

Cons:

Flash Worked Only When It Wanted To, Prefer Aa Battery Can Keep Spares Available

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera to replace my Canon SX120IS. Wanted something that would work better with doing things & going places with grandchildren. I LOVE the variable angle LCD screen. That was one of the major reasons I went with this camera, it was something I really wanted in a camear. The first DAY I used the camera the pix looked really good. BUT when I used the camera at night, the flash don't work right. I could stand in one spot and take pix over and over of same thing, I MIGHT get the flash to work 1 out of every 10-15 shots. You CANNOT get young children to stand still for 5 minutes or more, just trying to get the flash to work to take a pic. When a child is doing something special or has a special expression, or an amazing moment and the flash doesn't work, you can't take the pic over again, it's lost forever. I did return the camera to place of purchase. I can't take a chance on a camera and have it not work right when. I feel the cost of the camera is to much of a risk. :-(

Great camera

By stretch from Ohio on 03/08/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought this to update my old A630. Did not want to go into an SLR. I still am a point and shoot kinda gal but do like to play with options and other settings. Happy, happy. Had to have tilt arm to take pictures of wildflowers upside down. Wanted more zoom to take pictures of eagles on nests and maybe a bear or two from afar. Was out watching eagles with some mighty serious camera people with huge camera & lens and they were totally impressed with what my camera could do. They thought zoom was excellent. Burst of 8 pictures option got the eagle coming into the nest, wings full out. My pictures were as good as theirs. Love this camera. Wish it came with instruction book to carry along. Happy, happy. I am on my 4th Canon now and am glad i stuck with Canon.

So far, my dream camera

By canon fan from NE Georgia on 03/04/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my 5th canon Point and Shoot. I bought it to replace my 130 because it combines an awesome zoom lens with an optical viewfinder. Have had the camera for a few weeks now and taken on vacation. I have not had long enough to try out the manual possibilities. However: Great night and long-distancce shoats using auto settings. Beautiful family group photos as well. Yes, I wish it had a printed manual for this price but have loaded the pdf manual on my mobile devices. It would be nice to have raw and other file forms but I can barely keep up with digital processing of my photos so that did not deter me from purchasing. The recovery rate is a bit slower than I like but I think that once I master the burst mode that will be less of an issue. Canon - please keep up with your trend back to including optical viewfinders.

will not disapoint

By Caybryt from Undisclosed on 03/03/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an excellent bridge camera. But like a lot have said it lacks in some aspects. I do believe it is designed for the begginer that is why so many of the things it can do is turned off. I say turned off because that is basically what it is. If you want to see what this camera will really do, search CHDK and put it on an sd card. WOW!! NOW THATS A CAMERA!! Save in RAW, tons more options like, more fstop, a lot higher lower shutter speed and iso, time lapse, motion detection for lightning strikes, remote shutter and a plethera of other things.

Best Ever Camera

By Bob from Pratt, KS on 03/01/2012

Pros:

Everything

Cons:

No Hard Copy Manual

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I echo all the Pros that the other reviewers have posted and say that this is a fantastic all purpose camera. I do think that Canon should have furnished the small hard copy manual. My solution was: I took the disk and had my local printing shop to print the 220 pages(both sides), cut the 4" x 6" pages, install the manual in plastic laminated covers with wire coiled binder. I had first downloaded the manual from Canon's web page, but found that every page had a watermark (COPY). I guess Canon was afraid someone would copy this manual and sell it. I now have the entire manual (4" x 6" x 1/2") that will fit into my camera bag that is printed on better paper than Canon's Getting Started Guide that was furnished and is very professional looking.

Some advice for owners

By Kingira from The VIllages, Fl on 02/24/2012

Pros:

Great Zoom And Iq

Cons:

Too Large To Be A Pocket Camera

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have and SD780, 980, and sx130. This camera has, by far much better IQ. It is a bit large but with that comes the fantastic zoom I read several complaints about the lack of a hard copy manual. I find that downloading the PDF file and leaving it on the desktop of my computer and saving it on my phone is much easier. It is infinitely easier to search for things in that form.

Hard copy Manual

By Muravu from Tampa,Fl on 02/23/2012

Pros:

Improved Over My S5 Is

Cons:

No Hard Copy Manual

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had this camera for two months. Despite its exellent potentials, I am frustrated not being able to take advantage of them. Canon skimped in not poroviding a hard copy detailed manual and instead only an online version. Great for many but for those others with limited access to it, the very expensive option left is to print 200+ pages. Why cannot Canon atleast offer an option to purchase a printed manual? I had Canon Powershot S5 IS and benefitted by such a manual.

Great Camera!

By Moose from Ohio on 02/21/2012

Pros:

Lots Of Creative Options, Great Battery Life., Quick Charge., Great Zoom.

Cons:

Needs Deeper Grip.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love my new camera - the zoom is amazing! Still getting used to using such a long zoom, but I'm getting it. And the pictures are great. The buttons are all easy to use and pretty much self explanatory. The battery life is MUCH better than I expected, and charging is quick too. My only "dislike" is that I keep pressing the top 2 buttons on the back with my thumb. The grip is not as deep as my last camera, and I don't know if I really need to use my thumb more to hold the camera - and in doing so I hit the buttons accidentally. Other than that, I am VERY happy with this camera.

Great camera with one fatal limitation

By AKBear from Alaska on 02/20/2012

Pros:

Zoom Lens

Cons:

Can't Use Exposure Over 1 Sec At More Than Iso 100

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

My wife and I have been using this camera for a couple of months now. We really enjoy the power of the zoom lens and it has enabled us to get some great shots. But living in Alaska, one of the greatest photographic opportunities we have is the aurora. This camera would not allow us to take a decent shot. The sx40hs will only allow us to use iso 100 or lower if we want to use an exposure time of over 1 second. At iso 100, even at 15 seconds the pictures were almost completely dark. At 1 second at iso 1600 or 3200, the aurora was visible but not great. My daughter had her Rebel T1i out and took some outstanding pictures using high iso setting and longer exposures. I have used many Canon digital cameras over the years from cheaper powershots to previous versions of the sx40hs like the sx3is. I have always been able to use higher iso settings with long exposure times to get decent aurora pictures. Canon needs to fix it so you can use ISO settings up to at least 1600 for the full 15 seconds in Manual and shutter priority modes. It was a major disappointment not to be able to use a camera in this price range to take decent aurora shots.

Fabulous carry around camera!

By jmistudio from NYC area on 02/18/2012

Pros:

Great Lens Range, Very Good Image Quality, Easy To Carry Along

Cons:

No Raw Files, No Printed Manual

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great camera to take along all the time! The image quality is excellent and the camera is rich with features. I shoot with the 1DS Mark III but that is a bit much to lug around all the time, and with the all the lenses needed to match the range of this little marvel, my case would weigh about 40 pounds. Truth be told, the image quality can't compare to the 1DS Mark III, but I had no illusions that it would. The bottom line is that because this camera is so easy to carry around, I have captured a lot of great images that I would have missed while the 1DS Mark III was back at the studio. I also have a G9 and an SX1 which are equally great carry around cameras, but the range of this camera's lens is what sets it apart. The one BIG thing those other Powershot cameras can do that this cannot, is capture RAW files. That is really my only serious complaint. If the SX40 could capture RAW it would be the ultimate carry around!

Outstanding!

By TexasDaddy from Keller, TX on 02/14/2012

Pros:

No Lens Changes, Good Price, Image Stabilizer, Slow Motion, Manual Controls, Speed Burst

Cons:

2.8 Is Biggest Aperture

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had accepted the fact that I was going to spend over a grand to get a new DSLR with lenses, and I was not happy about it. I came across the SX 40 by accident, but after reading the features/reviews, it had exactly what I was looking for all along (speed burst, latest sensor, super zoom, 1080p at 24fps, and manual controls)for less than half of what a new DSLR set up would cost. I'm not starting a photog business - I'm just growin' some kids. I figure I could buy this "tweener" to see if I really liked photography - and upgrade to a DSLR later if my passion bloomed. My first test shot indoors on Auto was just beautiful. The 35X zoom is, in a word, Unbelieveable! On my first day of shooting (yesterday) I was using the Tv mode to blur my kids arms for a butterfly effect (plan to do some 'light painting' today), shooting super slow motion dog runs, and taking smooth close-ups in Av mode. I have zero photography experience beyond point and click up until this point. All I can say now is - who needs DSLR? The SX 40 has everything a family on a budget needs without all the lens changes. I'm very pleased...

Best camera for NOT Being a DSLR

By Photo Geek 92 from Phoenix AZ on 02/09/2012

Pros:

Mostly Everything

Cons:

Battery Life

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love it... I am used to Canon brand, Best Canon ever. It is the best camera for not being a Digital SLR! I've had other brands of cameras and not as satisfied. I mostly use my camera for sports events and car shows, I also love the 35x zoom... I was at the airport and the photos and the zoom were extremely good (quality and features). I really haven't been on any vacations or to any car shows since I got this camera. Oh and by the way... the User Manual is on that CD in the box.

Off to a good start

By shorty from San Francisco, CA on 02/05/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just received my SX40 HS yesterday shipped in from XXX in just a few days. The Getting Started Guide was great and I am up and running in all basic areas. Everything is straight forward, and I would urge an adventurous novice user to take the plunge like I did. Product registration iseasy. The Zoom quality is truly fantastic and really intuative to use. It will add great creative depth to the photos I take. In terms of manuals/software syncs, the package includes a CD and assums everyone still has CD ROM capabilities on their PCs, which I dropped 2 laptops back. The downloads for manuals etc are on the website, but not referenced in the packaging. Easy to find by searching the Cannon site The full user manual is 220 pages long so I have some homework to do. That was a bit danuting; maybe they have tutorials etc to break this into chunks. One step at a time! Overall a very good purchase and step up experience for me so far.

Very Satisfied

By undrgnd40 from Minnesota on 01/27/2012

Pros:

Really Nice For The Money, Packed With Features, Lightweight

Cons:

Where's The Owners Manual???

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this camera to supplement my professional equipment. When I don't want to tote around the bags filled with lenses I take this PowerShot. It's a nice upgrade from my PowerShot SX110 IS. So far I have taken nice family and landscape photos, and some good little movie clips. It's packed with features, has great zoom length and takes clear images. If you want nice family and vacation pics without the bulk and price of an SLR, this is your camera. If you have professional equipment but don't always carry it - this camera is good for a lightweight backup.

As Good as it Gets.

By JoplinRising from Joplin, Missouri on 01/27/2012

Pros:

Accessories Are Reasonably Priced At Canon Website, Outstanding Battery Life, Out Of Box Ease Of Use, Accessories Available At Canon Website.

Cons:

Sx40hs Accessories Not Readily Available Locally.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The only thing "compact" about this camera is its relative size...In terms of performance, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than this little marvel. For anyone wishing to obtain consistently excellent photos without carrying an entire studio around with them, this one does the job in spades. Feature rich with all sorts of easily understandable shooting modes, just firing the SX40HS up and leaving it in auto mode has given me spectacular, and more importantly, consistent results. I have been successfully using mine to document the Joplin tornado catastrophe and recovery, as well as some nature shoots in the region. Detail and panoramic shooting, both important for these projects, have been easy to achieve with a minimum of labor. You could spend more, but you don't need to for truly amazing results. I've been a hardcore Canon user since the 1970's, and this camera does the name proud. Way to go!

Great Step Up to the SLR

By picturelady from Brainerd, MN on 01/25/2012

Pros:

Full Slr Features, Viewfinder With Optic Adjuster, 35x Wide Angle Zoom Lens, New Digic 5 Image Processor

Cons:

Sensitive Control Dial

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Photography has been my hobby for 30 years now. I love the digital world. I have all types and brands of cameras. Canon is my favorite. I recently purchased the SX40 because it seemed like a nice easy to carry "SLR-like" camera. I have the Rebel XT and the new SX150. The SX40 is by far a great "middle of the road" camera, between compact and full SLR. A perfect camera for the person wanting to move up to an SLR but not quite ready for the lens changing decisions. It has most of the capabilties of an SLR camera with its built in 35X Optical Zoom and an eye viewfinder as well as the screen viewer; It also has the ability to instantly become a video camera with the push of a button. The Digic 5 Processor creates some great photos, especially indoors and in low light. The only feature I find a bit touchy is the dial for changing settings... it is very sensitive and I seem to press it a little too hard and it selects instead of turning to adjust a setting for the aperture or shutter speed; something I am sure I will overcome with a little more practice. I truly recommend this camera for someone who wants it "all in one", with great quality in photos and video. A real plus for someone wanting to go full SLR in the future and wants a great camera to learn with.

Fantastic Camera & Pictures! Easy to use!

By TEALADY from Chicago, IL on 01/23/2012

Pros:

Easy Use/great Results!

Cons:

Time Between Shots.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I recently bought the Canon SX40 HS and used it at a wedding; I could not have been more pleased with how the pictures turned out! In quite a number of the pictures I was using the telephoto lens at quite a distance (bride groom putting the ring on his bride's finger and it looked so close that you would have thought I was within one foot of them but I was at the 840 mm length and it was in great focus without a tripod). I used the "auto" setting for all of the pictures. The wedding area was somewhat low-lit, but the camera did not need a flash, which was great! This is the best point and shoot camera I have had. The reviews I read before buying were very accurate and helped me make the decision to purchase it. Some of my friends have seen my camera and what it produces and are interested in getting one. I rate it number 1. The only thing I did not like was the delayed time between the shot just taken and when it was ready for the next shot; that left a lot to be desired. However, the overall attributes far out weight this one factor. I give it an A+.

Great Camera

By Car Guy from Clinton, TN on 01/17/2012

Pros:

Image Quality

Cons:

None So Far

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Was looking for a camera of this type so read all the reviews of the different ones, went around to the stores and got the hands on feel of all those in it's class. One thing that stood out about the SX40 was image quality and the long zoom and that was exactly what I was looking for so purchased it on 24 Dec 2011 and I sure haven't been disappointed, have taken many photos in many conditions, low light, full sun and all ranges of the zoom and also micro, you cannot beat the image quality with any camera in it's class. We have attached the camera to a 58" HD tv via HDMI cable and it is amazing the detail and the color is right on the money and the video's are also great. If your looking for detail in pictures even at 35X times this is your camera!

Excellent value for the price

By Buz from Colorado Springs, CO. on 01/12/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the Canon SX40 HS two weeks ago, and have been using it extensively, under various light conditions, and temperatures. I can not be more thrilled with the performance so far. The zoom is amazing, and the features are excellent. After having lugged around bags of equipment for my other cameras for years, this is a real treat. It is lightweight, and easy to use. The only additional items I have purchased for it was a small tripod, and a padded camera bag. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a great camera at a reasonable price.

Love my SX40

By schaery from Mobile, AL on 01/07/2012

Pros:

Filter Adapter., Vari-angle Lcd, Great Zoom, New Fish Eye And Miniature Effects

Cons:

No Manual Included, Prefer Aa Batteries

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the SX40 as an upgrade from my Sx10. Love all the extra features and effects. The zoom is incredible. I also like the fact that there is an adapter available to add my own filters to the camera. Battery life is good although I do miss the AA batteries that the SX10 used. The vari-angle LCD is the greatest thing to ever be added to a camera. One thing I absolutely do not like, however, is no manual included. I loved the small manual that came with my SX10. Just the right size to keep in my case for easy reference. I hate this downloadable manual. I can't afford to print it out, and turning on my e-reader to look up a feature isn't very convenient.

Can't believe my eyes!!!

By Flying Scotsman from Lake Norman, NC on 01/01/2012

Pros:

Everything!

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just gave a family member my trusty SX30 IS because I replaced it with this marvelous SX40 HS. Less than 2 weeks in my hands and ... I can't believe my eyes!!! This has to be the perfect fixed-lens P-n-S camera! In any mode, shooting stills or video, the images and files are jaw-dropping and astounding in every respect. As a long-time PowerShot owner, the controls are familar and all settings are easy to set and adjust. Modern security inspections make dragging your best dSLRs thru airports a real pain ... but not to worry that you can't get those eye-popping vacation shots. Take an SX40 HS for a good test shooting at your favorite camera store and you'll be impressed!!!

A telescope with a camera attached.

By PhonyPhotographer from Hampton Roads on 12/26/2011

Pros:

Battery Life, Ease Of Use, Quality Of Materials, High Zoom

Cons:

Manual Focus

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera was purchased as a replacement for my A3300 IS. It by far exceeded my prospects for quality and features. I had for some time been wanting to purchase a camera that had a manual mode and a strong zoom when the SX40 HS was announced. Having the good fortune of borrowing one for a week, I was so satisfied with the unit that I purchased one from a local store. I have played with all the shooting modes and the settings and have found the following information: The battery life is good. I can shoot a day's worth of photos and videos for a small excursion on one charge. Charging is not long either. Flash is powerful; the camera has a shoe for an additional flash, but I have not found this necessary. Focus: my only complaint. The auto-focus is superb, but sometimes slow. Manual focus is cool, but hard to do as the only ring on the camera is a small ring on the back that takes a long time to rotate. Screen is great; variangle, high-quality. Zoom is UNBELIEVEABLE! It can shoot wide for huge landscapes and telephoto like a telescope. Overall, I am highly satisfied at this purchase and would reccomend this camera to anyone who is looking for pro-features in an inexpensive camera. I often quipped that I would like to have an adapter for my telescope so that I could put my A3300 on it. I no longer desire this as I have a camera with a telescope for a lens!
