It just works!

By FarmerTed1971 from Portland, OR on 04/17/2015

My Speedlite Transmitter simply works and works so well. I'm new to Speedlites and jumped in and purchased this and three 600EX-RT's and am loving the radio function. Controlling all three flashes from the unit over great distances or hard to reach locations is a dream. Having this capability allows my creativity to not get bogged down with inadequate gear. Thanks Canon!

Great radio, when there's ambient light

By SLOWEDS from San Luis Obispo on 04/28/2014

Pros:

Superior Build Quality

Cons:

No Focus Assist

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I used the ST-E3-RT with 3 600EX-RT flashes for a wedding reception and loved the ease of the system and the results -- that is, when I could focus. There is no focus assist beam when the radio trigger is on-camera, so as soon as it gets dark, focus performance diminishes significantly. You then have to mount one of the flashes on-camera to get improved focus, which defeats the whole purpose of off camera flash. So, the radio system works best when you're trying to create some fill in good-to-average light situations. Once it gets dark and you want to use the system to create off camera light, you're out of luck.

90 % perfect

By photoshooter 52 from Pittsburgh Pa. on 02/23/2014

Pros:

Great Build Quality, Good Value

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a product I have wanted for a long time, and it works very well, but...... It should articulate like the flashes do, meaning go from the flat position that is currently to a screen up, vertical position so it can be read when the camera is at an eye level position on a tripod. I would like to see this change made in a new product. Very frustrating to have to either remove it from camera or remove whole camera from tripod to change settings, or carry a small ladder to be able to see the screen while it is mounted to a tripod. Just my 2 cents. I own a lot of canon gear including four (4) 600 ex rt speedlights which I love. Make this product go from good to GREAT! You can do it.....

Where's the AF assist beam?

By Don from Northern VA on 12/14/2013

Pros:

Fast Recycling Time, Good Exposure Performance, Superior Build Quality, Quiet

Cons:

No Af Assist Beam

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Everything works great except No AF Assist Beam. Need that beam, put that in asap. The main flash 600EX-RT must be mounted on the camera at all time at night time, so what's the point of buying this ST-E3-RT then?

Great addition

By Hawkeye_Dave from Marion, IA on 10/11/2012

Pros:

Fast Recycling Time, Superior Build Quality, Good Exposure Performance, Quiet, Same Display As 600 Flash, Convenience

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Also have a single 600 flash. Wish they had an adaptor for my 580 flash. But great for getting rid of the cord for macro, hand pointing the flash, remote location of flash. I will be adding at least 1 more 600 flash to the arsenal.

So close

By Canon F1 user from Toledo, OH on 05/21/2012

Pros:

Quiet, Superior Build Quality

Cons:

Only 100' Range, No Focus Assist, Can't Talk To Radios From The Past, Large Investment

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Canon had a winner with the older ST-E2 but is a bit short with the new radio transmitter ST-E2-RT. The omission of the focus assist light is major. My Canon 5D Mark II and Mark III cameras can focus well in daylight, but a dark room it is a challenge. The cameras just miss too much without a focus assist light. Canon omitted this feature and any other maker of radio transmitters also has no assist. So Canon has a great radio tool that may not deliver focus. As well it would have been better if we could integrate the ST-E3-RT with existing radio products. We have owned other radios for over 15 years. Some older receivers are built in our studio strobes. But the Canon will not talk to the current studio equipment. It is unfortunate that the Canon product has been priced at level higher than we've paid for radios with no cross communication. And no focus assist at this escalated price. Canon acts like they invented radio transmitting, but really we've been fighting line of site for a decade. We bought the new 600 flash system, but it really talks about Canon not understanding the studio photographer's big picture.

State of the art finally arrived!!

By lacolorstudio from Los Angeles, CA on 04/13/2012

Pros:

Aa Batteries

Cons:

No Hot Shoe

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Right out of the box, it performed exceptionally well. This is a long over due product that filled a gap that was provided by third party manufacturers, that tried to please everyone. This transmitter excels in the following points: 1-Controls the speedlites in both ETTL and M modes. 2-Controlls multiple flash groups, which opens the possibilities to infinite amount of combinations. 3-Eliminates the need to touch the remote flashes. 4-The most amazing mode of all is the stroboscopic, with multiple flashes on different group ratios. 5-Easy menu, with beautifully back-lit multi-function LCD, is located right on the top. The Only Drawback is: It doesn't have built-in HOTSHOE! that was a mini blunder! but i could live with that. Enjoy shooting, and shoot hard!
