I purchased the scanner, primarily , to save colored slides of pictures that I had taken, over 50 years ago, when in the military and when my youngest children were born. the slides printed out into beautiful, clear , first class prints . A far better job then I expected.

The Epson V500 is a very good scanner and the Ice program works very well. The colors come out the way they should, bright and very good colors. It does PDF files great just by pushing a button! Also direct to Outlook Email or printer. I would recommend this scanner to any one and when ever I need to replace it, I would get another like it.

Sorry I waited so long to start using this amazing scanner. I have used it a lot and enjoy scanning my old slides, negatives and photos. I have to do very little if any editing. The editing is to correct old negatives and slides some 50 + years old.

100+ year old glass negatives on the V500

By mvm06 from central Kentucky, USA on 10/02/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I thought I would pass on an interesting use for the V500 - scanning 100+ year old glass negatives. Of course the slide/film carriers would not work on the odd sized glass negatives, so I had to carefully line up the negs so the lid lighting would work. Bottom line - the V500 did a great job pulling an image off these old, poorly stored, and sometimes damaged glass plate negatives. Each scan required cropping, and image manipulation and clean up - but the resulting digital images were a true glance back into our world 100+ years ago.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

Using this for over several years now. Can report this is the best scanner I have ever used. Great features, settings selection and consistent outputs. The included Optical Character Recognition program has been a great asset. I have not used the film or slide scan feature so cannot comment on that feature. Have moved it to Windows 7 system and functions equally as well.

Dedicated Scanner is Dedicated to Excellance

By wefergie from Heber-Overgaard, AZ on 07/09/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For a while I was satisfied with using an all-in-one unit until some critical scans of slides and negatives were needed. Being very pleased with my Epson Workforce printer I bought an Epson scanner. The quality of scans, ease of use, and options for the final scan exceeded my expectations. The ability to enlarge the image to standard 35 mm print sizes resulted in a superior print with a minimum of post processing.

I purchased this Scanner, because its like the one I use at CS-University. I think it the Greatest, however, this one is a Photo of which I had picture made at a Department Store, of which I love how they used the Scan Film Trays. I would love to learn how to use the Trays that came with it. I see where it says insert negatives with the shiny side facing down etc. Is there more information? I see that it say: Visit Epsons support website at Epson.com/support. I will give that a try. Being a Senior Citizen, and in school ism as easy as it lookLOL!

I hated to get rid of my old Epson, but there seemed to be no drivers for it compatible with Windows 8. I knew what I wanted - all the old features plus Auto Document Feeding. I found that for just a few dollars more I could get that plus a wide array of USEFUL feature (not whiz-bang stuff you never use). This scanned does exactly what I need; it's easy, intuitive, and fast.

The Good and the Bad of 35mm Slide scanning

By Anonymous from South Carolina on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have only used the scanner for scanning 35mm slides. Slides were 30 to 50 years old, Ektachrome and Kodachrome. Most of the Ektachrome were very faded. Pros: Scans to good resolution. Automatic color correct was good for about 90% of the slides. Some severely faded slides needed help with additional correction software. Backlight correction was also good. Cons: There are two types of dust removal, only one can be used at a time. The slides were dusted with a special brush. The Digital ICE Technology was used to scan the first hundred slides and appeared to remove all the dust. After reviewing the results on the computer monitor at a normal magnification there was no dust, but an obvious black outline around faces, eyes, light clothing, etc. I switched to the dust removal built-in to the provided software. This did not do an acceptable job of dust removable, but did not leave an outline. It did leave green dust marks on the scan, which could not be identified under magnification of the slide. I was able to retouch the scans to remove most of the marks, but it was very time consuming. In closing: I'm happy with the results, which are far from perfect, but I can now preserve and share the memories.

Good Scanner, deficient software

By joecompute from Chicago on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

We have had this scanner for several years, and recently changed to a new computer running Windows 8.1. As the software disc was for Windows Vista, I downloaded the newest drivers, etc. These worked after considerable trouble getting them to run the installation routine - like rolling back the system to Windows as received from the factory, not the latest updates. However, the downloads don't include the OCR software, so now that function does not work, depriving me of part of the reason I bought it.

Erson Scanner V500

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am really happy with my V500 scanner. Admittedly I am an old guy and have a good deal of problem with electronics especially with trying to scan something from the 4 way printers. I had heard that Epson was the best so I called Epson direct and had a fantastic very knowledgeable salesman who just helped me immensely. Just walked me thru it step by step and I have to say that there are not to many steps so that helps me. Price was very good and I had it the next day. Admittedly my kids set it up for me but I have been a happy camper ever since.

I've had this scanner for about 2 years and have scanned over a thousand photos with it, including slides and negatives. This scanner is fantastic. With it I can set the resolution, restore faded pictures, remove dust and scratches, and in short do anything I want with the photos. I can also scan printed documents and convert them into Word documents. This scanner is really top quality for the serious photographer.

Great Quality, Easy to Use

By math from Dripping Sprigs, TX on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After much searching, my brother told me this was the scanner to get. He was right. Easy to use, and it has great quality. I wish there was more of an instruction manual to describe when and why I would use the non-automatic modes. It could also tell me when I could open the cover to remove and replace with new slides without waiting until the very end of the sequence. It would have been so easy for Epson to include simple use information as to what the reason and advantage of the other modes and dpi levels might bring. Most of us buy these products as novices and never get beyond that level!!!

So excited to get this made into to photo books and and on individual drives for them to all have a set. Instead of having heavy, clunky albums that are falling apart, they all fit on a small portable drive. Awesome scanner!! Worth every penny!

Perfection V500 PHOTO Scanner

By Babb from Twin Lake, Michigan on 04/24/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned this scanner for SEVERAL years it has been extremely reliable and very instrumental in my office day to day operations. Special note to keep this unit at it's peak performance keeping the drivers and software updates are extremely important. The cost for this unit has gone down compared to when I intially purchased it, but overall it still is a very usedful scanner. My gratitude to Epson for it's conception making it very well made and still to this day I find more uses for it. I've seen the spec's on Epson's V700 series, of which my son (whom also is into photography) has informed me that he purchased a V700 found it incredible. But my V500 will remain a vital part of my overall office system. Besides when something works extremely to my satisfaction I stick with it. Eventually things get worn normal ware and tear thing but if my V500 needs replacing I'll get another V500.

excellent for documants, iffy for slides

By Yossi from Waltham MA on 04/21/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I had bought it to replace my older Epson scanner that died of old age. Gave me excellent use for reflective scanning, enabling me to restore yellowed photos and book pages. I recently tried it for archiving slides. It gives excellent results with a single slide in auto mode. HOWEVER, when I place 4 slides in the holder, one of them gets scanned well, the other three are clipped by a third. I have been unable to get a preview in order to manually define the area for scanning, though I tried the professional mode and other modes, and have consulted the manual to no avail.

Correction to my earlier review

By Yossi from Waltham on 04/21/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. After contacting customer support and some further trial and error, I have figured it out, and scanning slides works. However, the manual and help menu should have been clearer to begin with. In the professional mode choose the document type as FILM, the film type as POSITIVE FILM, (if you are doing slides), and set the image type and resolution of your choice. The document size will default to 2.7 x 9.33, do not worry about that. Go ahead and click the preview button. After the preview is scanned, the preview window will open. This may be tucked at the bottom of the monitor area, and may need to be dragged to viewing position and opened. Now move the cursor and drag it to Mark the area of each slide as you want it to be scanned. When finished, click the button marked All to select all the marked slides, then go back to the main window and click Scan.

A Very Reliable Workhorse

By Bogframe from Brooklyn, NY on 03/23/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I run a digital archiving and photo restoration business, so any equipment I use has to work right every time, all the time. The Epson Perfection V500 worked perfectly right out of the box, it was so reliable that after six months of 6400 dpi slide scanning, it was still working like new! It was so reliable that I bought a second one just for printed photos! It's now almost three years later, and both scanners have been reliable workhorses. One or the other is in constant use 8 hours a day, six days a week. The only maintenance I've had to do one either of them has been to clean the glass. If I had one criticism, it would be that the carriers for 35 mm film are a bit on the flimsy side. I'd like to see something a tad bit beefier. On the other hand, it scans 120 size film, so I can't really complain. It's a great scanner I'd recommend to anyone.

Just a short review - everything was in box but with very minimal packing. It was more what I would expect from on in store pickup not the type of packing I expected from fedex on my doorstep in the rainy state of Oregon. Second point the "Free Photo Shop Elements" is about 3 versions behind. They sent version 9 when the present version I think is up to version 12 ! Not a major point but not what most of us would expect when opening the box. LOL

Simple and Effective

By tennsmith from Huntsville, AL on 01/25/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

While it was not my first scanner, it was my first photo scanner and I have used it to scan photos and 35mm slides. Operation is straightforward and the controls seem adequate for my level of utility. The user can select from slides, negatives, prints, illustrations, artwork, etc. as a medium to be scanned. The preview function, particularly with slides, allows you to rotate the image or remove/reverse the slide position before scanning which I found to be of use. It scans 4 slides at a time and with the ICE technology active, takes 2-3 minutes for the 4 slides at 300 DPI. Scan resolution is user selectable and scan time is dependent upon selected resolution. My scanner came with a free copy of Photoshop Elements (for both PC and Mac) and this was not an advertised feature and IMHO, should be. Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance and operation of this scanner and would recommend it to anyone seeking to convert old slides/photos to digital images. Might not be the choice of the pros for whatever reason, but for the "ordinary guy" this scanner does well.

As good as it gets!

By Brad from presque isle, maine on 01/25/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had a older version of this scanner, lasted 10 years before the optics went out! So we decided we had a good long haul with it we decided to get the V500. Well this thing is great! Very quite! Much faster then the old one. Install was a breeze, only because I read the instructions!!!! The only thing you have to remember is to shut down the anti-virus and DON"T plug in the scanner until you get the software installed!! You will run into problems if you don't read the instructions. I re-install Windows about every 12-18 months. SO there was a couple of times I didn't go with the instructions and had to start from scratch with the install! SO BE ADVISED! Other than that the scanner is perfect!

By Anonymous from Lakewood CO on 01/22/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is a total piece of junk!! The directions are impossible to follow. It does NOT scan in slides. It just takes a picture of the slide et al with the border and everything and does 4 at a time. If you breath even gently, the slides are not aligned and cannot be cropped out and the light is not sufficient to reproduce the slide. They are all dark and lose clarity when I try to use Photoshop to lighten them. The description did NOT say one had to be a Photoshop guru to be able to even do the most minimal processing and it takes hours to do just a couple of slides given that it is necessary to do so much work to get even one slide into an actual picture. I want my full refund back!! Diane Short

Bottom Line:

This is a great product for the cost. It not only corrects black and white photos, It also comes with elements to turn slides and negatives into J-pegs. It also corrects these when you scan them in. They also have a better one that is more expensive, but this works great for me. Perfect for getting your older Photos ready to share with family.

I purchased it some time back and just got it up and running. It upgraded to windows 8 without a hitch. The auto run mode is great just put something in the scanner and it identifies and copies it perfectly. The photograph negative feature produces perfect prints only electronically. Just great for us old time photography enthusiasts.

Wonderful scanner

By Anonymous from Emmetsburg, Iowa on 12/24/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been very pleased with the Epson photo scanner. When I bought it, I was a bit skeptical about how well it would work, but it does as well as the salesman stated. My 90 year old mother moved from her house, and I made a project of scanning all of her photos for a family photo disc. This scanner is very easy to use. Occasionally, I need to turn the auto-correction off to get a colorful background to copy correctly, but otherwise it really does restore color to faded color photos that seem impossible to salvage. Thank you!!

Very, very good.

By croc~ca from Berkeley CA on 12/16/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanner is the best I have had to date. I have been scanning very old photos, for family records. Some of these photos are 150 or more years old. I am scanning in the 720 dpi plus range all the time. I can get perfect images. I do recommend this to anyone who is taking the time to scan high quality images. If you want a scanner for day to day work get an all-in-one, such as you find in the Epson Artisan Series. Note:- I am using a Mac 10.9 OS, and there is a current version of Epson software that is compatible.

Epson Perfection V500 Office Scanner

By Magg from Scottsdale, AZ on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had the old Epson 3200SU Photo Scanner with an additional document feeder. Was looking to replace this with another scanner that was as good. Needed to upgrade because scanner did not have a driver for the newer Windows (Vista, 7 and 8). This is the best scanner - does slides, negatives, transparencies, photos, and documents. The automatic document feeder is reliable so you don't have to watch for a feeding error. The Epson V500 scans more negatives and slides than the older version. This is one of the few scanners you can buy, in this price range, that has the CCD rather than the CIS scanning element. This gives a better scan. If I were to give a negative, it would be it is a little slower than other scanners with an automatic document feeder.

Epson Scanner

By HappyUser from Florida on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This relatively low-priced scanner is a nice device to scan old negatives and photos of all sizes into my picture library. The scanner is easy to set up and easy to operate. The quality of the scans is excellent. I have 35mm films and old color and black and white photos that are more than 40 years old. The scanned results are clear and sharp. I do not even have to use the dust or scratch removal options. I would recommend the scanner to any photo hobbyist as a good addition to one's set of at-home photo tools.

mixed bag review

By mainequarter from WOOLWICH, MAINE on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

the v-500 has produced good quality scans, when it works. The lid cover plug often comes loose, causing an error, and having to shut down and reboot the entire program. The enclosed 1 sheet of instructions is woefully inadequate. Be sure to check their website for the closest service center. If there is none within your STATE, you need service you might have to bear shipping fees both ways. the set up for scanning is too complex and confusing there is no simple put the negative in and push ''SCAN''. BUT, WHEN IT DOES WORK, IT PRODUCES A GOOD SCAN.

Solid Performance

By Archiepix from Houston, TX on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used the scanner for some time now, through hundreds of film negatives, prints, slides, and all manner of documents. It's solid reliability gets me through a workload with predictable results. I'm currently using it to scan a lifetime of imaging- black and white, color, prints, and different film formats. The V500 handles them all without complaint. I use a different method for slides, but for a small batch, the scanner and bundled software do a fine job. The V500 is a multitasker at its best.

Fabulous Photo Scanner

By Rover105 from New Hampshire on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the V500 to scan the thousands of family negatives and slides which have accumulated over the years. So far I have scanned about 1,000 black and white and color negatives -- many were odd sizes, including some from the 1930's as well as 126 and 110. The scanner performed beautifully and gave excellent results. The color and light corrections are very easy to use and greatly enhance the photos. I have been able to scan much faster than I had expected based on user reviews. Also, contrary to some postings, I found the software easy to deal with. This scanner is a fantastic value and I would recommend it unreservedly.

good but not great

By jack_b_nimble from NJ on 12/03/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

An updated version of a familiar EPSON design but still suffering from all the old design ills. To begin, item was received damaged ... specifically the feeder plastic sheeting that sits on top of the glass was wrinkled and punctured. The feeder does not work well, often gets stuck even with very few pages. There is also a distinct artifact streaking (green) when scanning any photos already in a printed page. Generally slow, slow slow interface no matter what "dpi" setting or upgraded software you use. Overall a 1 star rating for the money - this may very well be the very last Epson made device I will ever purchase after many years.

An excellent Scanner

By lilac fan from Osage City, KS on 11/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The V500 is easy to use. It has both a professional setting that allows a lot more input and a quick home style. The professional mode works very well when you want to have more control over what you are doing. The home mode allows you to scan quickly without input from you. The scanner does an excellent job of scanning several photos at one time and brings them in as separate photos. The Abby Fine Reader does a very good job, even with old obituaries and newspaper articles, of reading what is in the article. You do have to correct some things, but not many. The copier direct to your printer is a nice feature as well. The dust and scratch removal feature works very well, although if the photo is badly scratched, you will have to finish the work.

Scanner is great, EXCEPT FOR

By kds16 from Denver CO on 11/09/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have liked the professional interlaces by Epson over the last 10+ years and this caused me to buy this new one. This new scanner is faster and the interface is typical Epson, great but only work in 32 bit programs. These interfaces are not Twain 64 bit compliant and won't work on true 64 bit programs that I have. See Twain Working Group's "Twack-64" program to verify this. I can only get the simpler interface to come up using a non Twain option and that doesn't have any option to get the pro interface. The "Twain Acquire" option window is blank on these programs. I hope Epson corrects this as I see this problem talked about all over the internet. Keith

I was the high school paper photographer back in the 70s when all we had was 120/220 rolls of B&W film. Recently I came across a box with hundreds of (hilarious) negatives. Scanners for negatives

By ronniereyes from Charlottesville, VA on 10/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my third Epson scanner over ten or fifteen years. The first one became outdated, and the second one stopped working recently, so I purchased V500. It comes with a medium format template, which I use, 35mm which I use, and a template for slides which I don't use. It scans the mediums and 35s flawlessly and quickly. I usually download my negatives on my PC and transfer them to my mac. This time I wanted to download directly to my Mac and ran into some minor problems with the packaged software. Simply put, I needed to go to Epson and download the drivers and utilities onto the Lion 10.7. It worked fine then, and I did need help from customer support, and got it. I am a pleased customer.

Used an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo for 6 or 7 years and it wokred great until the bulb went. The V500 is the closest in features (and all of the 4490 negative holders fit, too!). Setup was easy and there were no issues using it on my 2009 Mac running Mountain Lion. Just download the Epson Scan software from epson.com. The bonus was the Photoshop Elements 9 which was included (which also works on my Mac!). Setup was easy and I am very happy with the speed I can scan my old 120 6x7 and 6x6 negatives.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner oustanding qua

By Phattstack from Dayton Ohio on 09/14/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Perfection V500 photo scanner has been outstanding in every aspect of its performance. I scanned a B&W photo of my parents wedding party from 1946. Using the color restoration and de-screening options on the scanner the copy turned out crisper and sharp than the original. When I printed the photo, using the gray scale option on my Epson Stylus R380 photo printer, the picture printed out immaculate. I was very impressed (as always) with the sharpness of the color black in the photo. When I scanned a slide from the early 70's using the color correction and dust removal it removed all the purple from the scanned slide. The copy was amazing when compared to it done with no corrections. I found the software easy to navigate through and the set up on the monitor screen was nice. There were instant previews for all the correction options I selected. I agree with one of the reviews I read that the slide holder needs to be designed with tabs that hold the slide in place when removing them from the scanner. There is always a risk of fingerprints being left on the scanner because you have to grab the slide with your fingers to remove it. The only other issue I had with the scanner was installing the software. The first time installing every thing went fine. When I tried to update the software I was flagged with a warning from Microsoft that the software has not passed windows logo testing verifying compatibility with windows XP. Proceeding with installation may make your system unstable. So I canceled the install and then my PC would not recognize the scanner. I had to uninstall the software and reinstall and it worked fine. Then I didn't use the scanner for a few weeks and when I turned it on it wanted me to install the software and my PC wouldn't detect the scanner. So I had to uninstall and reinstall it again and it worked OK. It is possible I had unplugged the scanners USB cable during this time and that may have caused the issue but it does seem there is a compatibility issue with XP. Another note is when I tried to install the software following Epson's instructions "to install software and then attach scanner" that didn't work. When I turned the scanner on it wanted to install the software. I had to attach scanner, turn it on and then let it search and install scanner from the disc. But these little quirks in the software I don't find to be a reason not to purchase the scanner. When I removed it from the box I was very impressed with it's design. It is a very cosmetic appealing scanner and the weight of the scanner has the feel of being durable. I also love the no warm up time instant scanning after it is turned on.

Extremely pleased so far

By Hooford from Ontario, Canada on 09/12/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the V500 strictly for slides and print scanning. It is 7 days and 1600 slides since I bought it, so it is time to write a review. I have been searching for a reasonably-priced, good quality scanner for 20 plus years, finally resorting to photographing the projected slides, with only fair results. I found the V500 simple to set up and, using Auto Run with customized choice of destination etc, I have had no problems. It takes about a minute per slide in groups of 4, at 300dpi and the results are excellent. The auto photo orientation often "corrects" the wrong way, but otherwise no criticisms.

I have always loved Epson products. However, Scanners have always been a real pain in the butt to install. This Epson v500 is no different. The Buttons on the front of the unit has never worked correctly from the first day I installed the software. After a long detailed process of installing, re-installing the software, I think I got them to work. Everything now seems to work perfectly. The Document Feeder works flawlessly.

Best Flatbed Scanner I've ever owned

By burkhame from Lindenhurst, IL on 08/28/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Before I buy any product, I research it thoroughly; Specifications and most importantly, REVEIWS! My use is 80% personal; i.e. Family Photos, Reproduction of printed documents, etc, and 20% business; OCR & some imaging. The scanner had to meet a certain set of criteria. 1) USB 2) Good color rendition, 3) A nice range of resolution settings and optionally, 4) be able to scan Photo Negatives / Slides. This "Fit-the-bill" !! In-Fact, This scanner does far more than what I needed or have even used. The scanner came nicely packed with restraining clips for the slide arm & non-residue tape. Setup was easy. When I bought this I was using Windows XP Pro. I upgraded to Windows 7 & had no compatibility issues. (A word of caution, make sure you have a decent amount of memory (RAM) 2-4GB, ESPECIALLY if you plan on doing Hi-Res scans. Otherwise, rendering time will be very long after the scan is complete) The OCR software "ABBYY" (included) is outstanding! The recognition has been perfect. I have not had a single problem with either the included software or the scanner itself. This should be on the desktop of anyone who is serious about imaging.

great scanner for photos

By leftoverking from california on 08/26/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

i have scanned thousands of negatives with this scanner, and it has worked great. the prints made from the scans have turned out nice, and all in all, for the price it is a great product. my only complaints with the product are the negative holders for 35mm film are a bit flimsy, but worked fine. also the software leaves a little bit to be desired. the features of the scanning software are fine, but the preview window is so small it is of little use. most of the corrections i made to my negatives were done in photoshop afterward, but it would be nice to be able to see what the heck you are doing on the way in. i looked into some german software that works with the v500. they had a preview panel that could be made full screen. way more useful, but in the end i did not purchase it. really, epson could greatly improve their product by making the software preview expandable. then it would be a five star product hands down.

Epson Scanner Review

By jond from Elberta, Alabama on 08/08/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have not had an opportunity to use all of the features of the V500 Photo Scanner but it appears to have more options than the 3170 Photo Scanner (purchased 12.22.2003) it replaced. It does appear to be more sophisticated and it does not perform as rapidly as the 3170. I have yet to determine how to produce the 17" x 22" enlargements. I purchased the V500 because the 3170 failed and dd not appeared to be repairable.

I bought this scanner for personal use. I read reviews about this scanner before buying. Some said it was slow...in fact, that might have been the worse thing said about it. Well, I must be slow, because I have not found this to be a fact. I have used it most for regular copying, but have also use it for photos and have been please with the results. I would def buy an Epson Scanner again.

I recently installed my second V500 Epson scanner. I have owned the first one for a couple of years and between myself and my office administrator, we had to "take turns". Now I have my own. It's a real workhorse and very reliable. The only addition I'd like to see is if I could connect it to my laptop wth a wireless connection.

Good Workhorse scanner for the money

By Dave from Arizona on 08/02/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner to replace my previous Epson scanner that finally quit working. I used my old one for many years without any issues. I have scanned over 20,000 photos into my MacBook Pro using my old one, and it performed well so I stayed with the same basic machine. It is a little slower than I'd like, but I have nothing to compare it to so. Like the old one, it is a little clumsy with slides and film. I think there could be a much more efficient way to do it. I usually use a specialized slide scanner instead. However, I have probably scanned all the slides that I ever will. Hence the 4 stars.

This scanner replaced an Epson Perfection 1640 which gave me excellent service for many years, but was not compatible with my Windows 7 upgrade. The V500 has been a perfect replacement with the added feature of ability to scan transparencies. It's fast to warm up and fast to scan, and the included software is excellent. Installation was a breeze. I couldn't be more pleased.

Scanner works great, and is good for preview printing photos scanned from negatives. Scans documents extremely well. The only negative is the software is not easy to figure out, and the instructions aren't much help. You will spend time trying to get photos scanned until you figure it out on your own.

Haven't tried film yet. Just wish it wouldn't show the different screens after each picture and that it would ask would you like to copy another photo instead of having to push the button each time!

Good Scanner

By Lola from Indianapolis, IN on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Epson Perfection V500 is the first scanner I've purchased so I can't compare it to others. I bought it to scan artwork to put online. Being a newbie, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I did my research on scanners prior to deciding on this one. Let's just say I'm not disappointed. I think it does a beautiful job and it's easy to use. I was unable to use the Photoshop Elements software that came with it because my operating system is too old. But I ended up downloading The Gimp (it's free!) and all is working harmoniously! I'm happy with my purchase!

Very quick to learn

By RB Photo from Illinois, Fox Valley on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I found the learning curve no real problem. It works quickly for what I purchased it to do. 3000 + slides to scan. The software does a good job of adjusting color/contrast on the first try. Have not scanned any negatives though that will be later. I have a dedicated film scanner and use it alot, but it takes a very long time to learn and scans are slow, but it is much higher resolution. For web use the V500 is perfect.

Epson Perfection V500

By GWG from Pittsburgh, Pa on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanner is easy to use and produces very good images. I have only used it for scanning B&W and color prints and haven't used the slide scanning feature. I scan in Profesional Mode o produce 1200 dpi, 16-bit images and get great results. The software is another matter. When Epson Scan is working, it does exactly what I need it to do and gives me good control. The problem is, Epson has not kept up with changes for the MAC OS 10 operating system. Apple's latest version of X, 10.8.4, broke my ability to use the scanner as the Epson software would hang up constantly. I believe it has something to do with Apple's going to 64-bit, but the Epson software team does not seem to be in a hurry to address this issue. In all fairness, since the 10.8.4 upgrade, even Vue Scan does not work well anymore. Hopefully Epson will address this issue quickly as Epson Scan does what it says when it likes its environment.

Scanner review

By Jim from Columbus, Ohio on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This scanner is flexible and reasonably fast with flexibility to make adjustments for many different situations. However, I am currently having difficulty with the auto-feed mechanism. It worked well at first. After only a few hours total use it does not always properly 'grab' the paper in the feed tray. I have not discovered the cause or solution for this yet. It could be the 'slippery' paper I use or the heavier 28 lb. paper that is the source of the problem.

Epson V500 Photo scanner

By canonbychoice from White Hall, Arkansas on 07/28/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner to transfer all of our family pictures going back generations into digital files. This scanner has not disappointed me at all. It has performed without incident and the ICE features make restoring color to old faded pictures a snap. I would recommend this to anyone who has 35mm slides and photo prints that they would like to place in digital files for generations to come. You do not have to scan each picture individually, you can place as many as you can fit on the flat bed with minimal spacing and it will recognize each individual print as a separate photo. I have scanned over 3000 pictures and 35mm slides without a single problem. I still have over 2000 to go and although time consuming, it is a great way to archive all your pictures and then pass on to family for safe keeping for even more generations to come.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

By Haberdashery from Bismarck, ND on 06/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The real beauty in the product is that the scanning software allows one to choose from lots of settings for any scanning job. Choose from Photo or Document; choose dpi settings; run a preview, select or box off individual items, like each separate photo on a page. Choose ALL. Give the files a name in one box then a number in a second box. Scan. All items go into the computer with the same name but different chronically ordered numbers via one scanning pass. This is the best scanning system ever. It works great for scanning pages of album pictures where one wants to end up with individual pictures or if one wants to scan a person on a picture as one file then the entire picture as a second file. I never read a review about this product, but somehow ended up with this product and so I want to contribute enough info so that one knows what the product is capable of. It is totally awesome.

Unpacked it, quick software install, a few tweaks to get all programs to recognize it, and within 15 minutes I was up and running again with no wait time between scans. OCR working much faster now and good color scans on photos.

An Archivist's Dream Machine!

By Bogframe from Brooklyn, NY on 06/17/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This scanner is a workhorse! I've had it for over a year and have scanned well over 2000 35mm slides, 4000 negatives and a whopping 5000+ family photos going back to the early 1900s without a single hiccup or glitch. The ReadyScan LED technology is a blessing because I no longer have to wait up to 5 minutes for the scanner to calibrate and warm up. All I have to do is load it up, do my adjustments in professional mode and let it go. The color restoration feature is great for faded color photos and old, faded Ektachome slides. It may not be perfect in all cases, but it gives a good starting point for further restoration. If there's any drawback to this workhorse, it's that the light lid could be bigger. All in all, it's a great machine. I like it so much, I bought a second one that I only use for transparencies!

This scanner is easy to use and does an excellent job if you learn to use all the features. It took me a while to learn but with a little effort on my part I have learned to use a lot of the features and its made my job a lot easier to maintain my Photos. Not to mention any and all the documents I keep on my computer for ease of reference.

I found the slide and picture reproduction very easy to use. The only down on this was moving the black papers back and forth. Only a few slides at a time. The photo reproduction was very good.

I Luv It! (4.5 out of 5 stars)

By MomZBomb from Anoka, MN on 06/06/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

When preparing 4 my sons HS grad party I wanted a scanner that had the portability that my printer-copier-scanner didn't have. I bought & returned 2 other less expensive scanners b4 buying my Epson Perfection V500. Altho they had the portability factor that was so important 2 me, they were cheaply made & lacked the quality & durability I was looking 4. I have been extremely happy w/this scanner & it def has proven 2 be worth the added expense. It has everything a scanner should have & more, w/only 1 exception. The only feature the cheaper models & my all-in-1 has that this scanner lacks is a SD &/or USB slot. If it had these capabilities the Epson Perfection V500 would truly be Perfect & warrant the full 5 star rating!

Works Great

By Helen M. from Riverview, Florida on 06/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had this scanner for several years, and use it mostly to copy photos. I like that I can put more than one photo on the scanner, and it scans them into separate files. Also works great to scan printed items, and I've also used it to scan negatives. And it works with my new PC, which has Windows 7- my prior PC that it was used with was a VIsta machine.

Good hardware, poor software

By Chick from california on 06/01/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have owned an Epson CX8400 for several years, and it prints really well and has a built-in document scanner. The software to use this scanner took some time for me to master, but it works quite well. My film photograph collection contains a variety of positive film formats, including 35 mm. slides, 38 mm. superslides and 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 inch (120 film) positive film. In researching film scanners, I found the Epson Perfection V500 scanner that was on sale for $140. It can scan with resolutions of up to 12,800 dpi and should be able to scan all of my film sizes, so I purchased this unit. In two weeks of testing, I found that it scans 35 mm slides really well (if you dont mind being limited to only 4 slides per scan), but many difficulties result when scanning superslides. About half of them get cropped to regular slide format. The on-line manual shows no reference to "superslide". I called tech support and was not able to get a solution. However, upon attempting to use their web help, a tip appeared under FAQs. When preview results appear incorrect, they said to uncheck "thumbnails". This enables the user to designate a marquis to select all of the slides as one image. The best solution I have found, is to use the film scan template that has an opening for 2 1/4 x 4 3/4 inch film. Unfortunately, this allows only 2 superslides at a time to be scanned. I use Photoshop to crop the results into 2 images and save them separately. These are only a few of the problems I have had. The scanner is sometimes not found unless I reboot my computer, including replugging the USB cord or restarting the scanner. Also, I have not found a way of naming the settings I designate, so I have to write down what they are actually used for. (E.g., Setting 1, setting 2, etc.) The resulting exposure is usually not optimum, so needs further correction. It looks like Epson hacked their old scanner software to use with this scanner and didn't bother to check everything. If you are looking to a regular slide scanner, this is a good choice, but for anything more unusual, it would be best to get a more professional unit.

Very Good Buy But,

By Dave from Aiken SC on 05/30/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second Epson scanner and it works great with the supplied ICE software. However, I had to resurrect an old PC laptop because Epson does not have updated software for Mac Lion operating system. You can get it to work on a IMac but you do not have any of the software flexibility offered by ICE such as color restoration, spot removal, scratch removal, etc.

Works good!

By Teddy G. from Lititz, Pa. on 05/27/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wanted a "pro" scanner - couldn't afford one. The V500 is a nice scanner, at a fair price. Good for scans of all types. Handy for making copies. Plenty of options for "manual" operation, though the "auto" function is often "fine". Front panel buttons stopped working at some point(?), I can only assume because I turned-off some of the "auto" functions(I do NOT like "auto-update/auto-run/auto-monitor" functions.), so, eventually, I'll probably un-install/re-install the entire software package, then closely monitor when the buttons quit, as I again, turn-off functions one-by-one. The buttons are not nearly as important to me as having NO "auto/always running" stuff...

new EpsonPerfectionV500 Photo Scanner

By Edmundo from Central Pa on 05/19/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I just purchased this scanner and it seems to work okay. Since I was on Windows 7, I had to locate 64bit drivers; also the product ccame with "updated software" meaning Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (as opposed to the most current version 1) Scanner software was also quite outdated; I would expect from Epson and hope I can correct these problems. Otherwise, the scanner seems to (function) work well.

I purchased this scanner specifically to scan negatives. Already had an all in one. The scanner does a good job. The only problem is that I haven't had time to use it consistently. Overall, a good scanner

By family historian from midwest on 04/15/2013

Bottom Line:

The Epson V500 photo scanner does a great job scanning photos reasonably quickly. My main complaint is that some dark streaks have developed on the underside of the scanning surface, and these show up sometimes in the scans. I don't know what this is, or if it is possible to get rid of it.

Film Photographers Essential Tool

By Carolina from Mojave Desert, California on 04/11/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This scanner is essential for those photographers using film. You can scan your negatives with this machine using the provided templates. There is a template for 35 mm film, and one for slides. I suggest that Epson provide a scanning template for 120 format film too. Since I shoot and develop my own film, the V500 is an essential tool for my work. Many of my fellow professional and art film photographers use the same machine.

After using Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner for a year I am very satisfied with the scanner. It has adjustments for all types of photos, black and white and color. It copies documents very well in color or black and white. I also was able to scan some old positive slides that were more than 50 years old and faded. They came out viewable considering their age and condition. I have 2 Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanners; one in my NY home and one in my Florida condo. I like the scanner very much and I recommend it to my friends.

V500 Photo Scanner- works nicely

By Don A from Danbury, CT on 04/10/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Installed the V500 with minimal difficulties. Had a problem with the CD that came with the scanner because it did not have the up to date software /drivers/app for my iMac with Lion OS 10.7.5. Had to go to Apple and get driver; still did not work. With the friendly help of BH Photo tech support, we got the rest of the missing software from the Epson Site. This took more time that it should have to get the Scanner operational. The scanner works very well, and converts my 35 mm slides with excellent color rendition and resolution. I'm pleased now that I passed the initial challenges of setup.

By Elmer717 from La Verne, CA on 04/08/2013

Bottom Line:

The V500 was recommended by my office supply vendor as an answer to slide and film strip concerns. It replaced a competitive product which I returned. The V500 worked with ease and simply did what it was supposed to do. Although it processed only 4 slides at a time, that was more than fast enough so I could keep them organized while I was processing them. Both flim and slide conversion images were sharp and what I was looking for. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

I would have given this 5 stars except for the fact that getting into the setup to do film and slides was not very intuitive. But, with some help from Epson, I was able to master this task. Great Scanner, Not So Great Software

By RDSJr from Vancouver, WA on 03/31/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great bang for the buck. I bought this scanner to get all of our family photos into the digital age and the scanner has been doing a fantastic job. I'm running it on an iMac and find the scanning software lacking somewhat. Epson needs to be a little better at getting updates out. I've started developing my own B&W film and I use the V500 to scan the negatives and it does a fantastic job. The only real learning curve is just learning the ins and outs of scanning in general to get the best results for what's being scanned and what results are desired. This would go for any scanner, so it's not an Epson thing. There's plenty of info on the web to get schooled on scanning. I think this is a great scanner, but I'm unable to use the shortcut buttons on the front running OS X ver 10.8. I wish I could just use the PDF button as it's intended. So again, great scanner, great results, annoying software that's not up to speed with OS X 10.8.

I was looking for a scanner to replace my old PowerLook 1000, that could scan a variety of sizes, especially 35mm slides and larger format negatives. The V500 performed beautifully and quickly. Scanning photos and documents is a snap thanks to an easy selection menu. It is also a smooth operation changing from scanning reflective art to negatives and slides. I am very pleased with it and found it to be very affordable.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Very Good

By bobbyaj from South Puget Sound, WA on 03/26/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is our 2nd Epson scanner over the years, purchased Nov, 2009. We've never had one fail, they just outlive the OS of the computers they are attached to. The V500 was bought to work with Vista/XP computers, and is an excellent scanner. Unfortunately, The XP computer has left the house, being replaced with a WIN7. The WIN7 and the Epson Perfection V500 don't get along as well as it does with the Vista. Not a big problem, more of just an annoyance, but do wish the driver or something could be updated to keep up with the changing OS. Am definitly happy with Epson scanners, and will continue to purchase and recommend them.

I have had the Epson Perfection V500 Scanner for a few years now. I use it to copy important records, and store them digitally. Scanning my own art work and saving it in the pdf format allows for excellent results from the printer. The film matrix that holds 35mm and oversize negatives has resulted in superior black and white photograqphs in digital form. The V500 enables a variety of formats in which to save material. Scanned mages are true to original color, lines, shapes, and tones. It renders texture with accuracy. The scanning process is slow, but the caliber of this scanner is high.

I was a little skeptical when reviewing the Espon Perfection V500 Photo Scanner's specs, etc. This is to tell you that this is the best scanner I have ever used to scan photos, b&w and color negatives, color transparencies, much of this media up to 60 years old. The ICE software that comes with the unit does miraculous fixes to scans bringing them back to their original color quality; all I can say is that its performance is unbelievable. And the price, can we talk? The price is the best bargain I ever seen for such a performer. Highly recommend to all whether you're an amateur or a pro.

Average Scanner

By Grandma E from Parrish, FL on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

This scanner is average. I am a bit disappointed in how it scans old photos. The last Epson scanner I had did a much better job. I am a scrapbooker and family history buff. Thank heavens I had scanned the majority of my old photos on my first scanner. The old scanner became useless once I began using Windows 7, so hopefully my present scanner will NOT become useless when I switch to Windows 8 on my newly ordered computer. This will be a huge disappointment and I would NOT replace my present scanner with an Epson.

I'm not a photographer just wanted to put older film photos onto the computer so I could preserve and share them easier. I am happy with the quality of the pictures and the scanner has functioned flawlessly. I do not use it on a daily or even weekly basis though. It is easy to use it as a copy machine and to send documents or pictures not already on you computer as email. If you are confortable with computers you should have no problem using it.

Excellent Product

By Mike from Portland, ME on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner to digitize the hundreds of old family photos I inherited (some back to the late 1800's). This scanner is extremely simple to use and that combined with the software actually helped enhance many of the old photos that had faded and made this daunting task easy and fun. For the price and quality, I highly recommend it.

The Fantastic V500 Photo Scanner

By Dan In Indy from Indianapolis, IN on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I acquired my V500 Espon Scanner in July 2008. I could not be more thrilled with its durability and quality of scans. The size makes it portable when it needs to be taken onsite away from my office. The ease of controls to produce simple B&W lower res scans or high res color is very easy to set up. I love the "Digital Ice" intuitive software for color restoration.....Magic in a box. This product knocks the socks off the all in one printer/scanner devices. Would highly recommend!

Photo Scanner

By jehilde from Englewood, TN on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this scanner because of reviews on line. I had been scanning old photographs and documents and was having problems fixing the obvious fading and darkening due to age. I have the scanner set to automatically correct what I am preserving for future generations. It makes old documents readable and pictures editable. Great scanner for the money and have recommended it to friends and family that want to preserve old memorabilia.

Very Happy with the Scanner

By Vicki from Undisclosed on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the scanner to use with my grandmother. She is amazed that we are able to take the old family slides and scan them to the computer, then share them with other family members. We have not used the software to edit anything we have scanned. Many of the slides from the 50's and 60's look just as good as the day they were taken once they were scanned. It has been a fun family time to scan the old memories and see the dear loved ones that have been gone for many years. My mother-in-law is looking forward to a visit with the scanner so we can tackle many of their family slides as well.

Works well

By bob from Bergen County, NJ on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This does a good job with slides, got good quality and color with slides from the 1950's. You can only do 4 at a time and the copy process is fast so when doing this be prepared to be busy. It also worked but not as well with negatives. On this, it did not always copy all images, but the ones that copied had good quality. The reason for 4 stars, not 5 was that on slides it did not copy the whole image, in most cases this does not matter, but in a couple of these where group photos where from edge to edge of the slide, faces were split in the copy though they were complete in the slide.

Bottom Line:

Arrived in solid packaging, easy to set up and operate. Did have to go online for some basic instructions, but there is a Help that describes the functions on the screen. I have scanned more than a thousand b&w and color photos, slides, and negatives with many more to do. I am very pleased with the scanner. It is quiet and fast although I have nothing to compare it with. I have not used the Photoshop program that comes with it, but I probably will later. I recommend the scanner to anyone with many images to scan.

I like it. My only complaint is after using it's big brother the 750 the software in the 500 is a distant 2nd best. It's all in the price tag, if you're willing to spend the extra the 750 is much faster and the software will save you time and work and clicking!

By MJ from Undisclosed on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I owned an older version of this scanner. It cast a blue shadow on 1/2 of the scanner that showed on anything scanned on that side or with edges that went beyond the middle of the scanner bed. The new scanner is doing the same thing. Very dissappointed because anything scanned in color ends up with this distortion from the scanner.

Excellent Scanner

By Vonnie from Coos Bay, Oregon on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this scanner mostly because it was able to scan slides and negatives. I am totally satisfied with all of the features of this scanner, as I have been able to scan my grandfather's 3-1/2" by 5-1/2" negatives (from the early 1900's) with great ease! I also have great success with the slide scanning, no matter which size they are. I have scanned newspaper articles and never had any trouble with print legibility. All of my photo scans came out just perfect and there are even more features I haven't used yet! I love this scanner and all the things it can do. I would recommend it for anyone who had multi-media type work to do.

My Epson V500

By Jacky from Montague,NJ on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The best overall scanner I have ever owned. The only improvement that should be made would be with the film adapters as they are really flimsy and hard to work with especially with old and warped films and there should be made available adapters for smaller films such as 620's which were used in the early 50's which I have and am going to modify one of the extra adapters to make do.But for overall scanning I still consider it one of the easiest to use.

My best buy

By AbqBill from QCA, IL on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had several different brands of scanners over the last 20-25 years and they came with different OCR software. The scanner this V500 replaced never put out the same colors as the scanned document/picture. The V500 produces wonderful (in my opinion) color rendition. The biggest surprise I had was when I tried the ABBYY Fine Read OCR program. WOW! NO errors! It is an understatement to say I consider this Epson Scanner one of the best buys I have made. I might add that one reason I purchased it is the satisfaction I have with my Artisan 50 printer! AbqBill

Great Scanner

By Greg from St Louis MO on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The V500 has been a great scanner for me using Windows XP. I've used it for scanning old photos and it does a great job with color and quality. I've upgraded to Windows 8 and the scanner doesn't do as good as on XP. Scanning CD labels and jacket covers, the colors aren't always true, but close. Also the photo edges aren't as good as in XP.. Seems like Epson needs to release a patch for use with Windows 8 to work like it does in XP. Even with these quirks, I still like this scanner and would recommend.

Epson Perfection V500 Scanner

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This scanner is absolutely unbelievable. I bought it to scan old family photo's and slides (800 slides and as many pictures). I did not trust sending pictures as old as 100 years to an internet service. This scanner is extremely easy to use and the pictures and slides come out better than the originals due to the ICE technology built in that takes out the specs and imperfections. I have hd pictures scanned professionally in the past and this is much better and allows You to adjust the picture to Your taste before You print or save.

v500 [photo scanner6

By bpdada171 from Melba Idaho on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

purchased to scan old negatives. I chose the 500 because it was available at time basicly. The scanner can handle up to 2.7 inch by 9 inch negatives. Unfortunately many of my negatives are from the old bellows style camera and the negatives are 3 inch by 5 inch. Just a 1/4 inch but still wish the scanner could have handled them. The scanner does a good job and software is ok. If I were to give the developers a suggestion to make it better I would suggest a more versitle film holder which could be adjusted to fit different sizes of film as there are more than 3 different formats out there to be scanned. The provided film holder is rather flimsey and if not handled carefully will come apart as it is only held by a small nub of plastic which I am certian will not last or survive long term use. I am currently shopping for a more sturdy user friendly film holder.

The quality of each scan was excellent. After I scanned them, I backed them up on disc and copied them for my sisters. Lots of wonderful memories, thanks Epson.

Great Scanner and software

By Bill from Richmond, VA on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have scanned in Positive slides and Negative film, around 2000. The quality of the created photo files are outstanding, and with the scanning options, this software is excellent. Occasionally, the scanner will lock up. I am not sure this is a software or hardware problem, but for me, it is not problem. It happens maybe once in servaral hundred scans and to clear it, a simple power cycle of the scanner takes care of the problem.

Scanning with the V500

By Joe from Omaha, NE on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Once installed, the V500 provides an easy and quality scanning process. I am presently scanning old slides into Elements 9 and then making 5 x 6 photos. Perfectly satisfied with the results. Yes, it is somewhat time consuming but the results alleviate that inconvenience. I will have no reservations about recommending this product to a friend. I experienced a glitch when installing the software but this was due to a problem with my computer. I work on a computer that came over on the Mayflower. I intend to upgrade shortly. The difficulty was ultimately resolved and I am up an running.

Big Bang for the Buck

By TechReview from Aliso Viejo, CA on 03/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanner worked right out of the box. Very little time to set up and connect. The included software was easy to install, but a little confusing to understand all the configuration options. There is isn't enough explanation to fully understand how each setting works in order to choose which works best for your core use. There isn't an owners manual per-say " its all on line so I HIGHLY advise you to print as much to pdf as you can before Epson removes the site making way for their current models. The On line manual really isnt well written leaving you with questions - you really just have to spend (a lot of) time to figure it all out - and even then you're not sure. The one BIG improvement is the white balance. No more gray background after a scan. The lid adjusts to thick or 3-d objects, like jewelry (which is what we use it for) " or can be completely removed if necessary. The other components we dont use, such as scanning film and slides. Cosmetically its nice. Well-built and solid design.

This scanner is great for scanning slides, negatives, photos, and documents. It is fun. And it comes with Photoshop Elements! However, Epson could go a long way to update the instructions. The instructions vary according to your computer. My Mac required several downloads to get it working. I was frustrated because the instructions were not clear about how to do the download. I had to email Epson for help. That fixed it and now I am having fun archiving old photos and slides and family history and and sharing all of that stuff.

PhotoScanning with V500

By Bill from kalamazoo,MI on 02/27/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Notes 1. Software installation: demands that a/v be disabled. this is un-acceptable. I looks to me like the software installed OK with Norton/Endpoint active. 2. Start key on scanner : inoperative. 3. Software states support thru Vista. This is badly dated: we need support for the 64 bit versions of Windows AND for Linux/Ubuntu 4. Software has to be re-started from launcher(aka "tray") for each scan 5. Software scans 1 pass per frame, making 4 passes to pickup images for 4 slides; 8 passes to pickup 8 images from negatives. Took me 3 hours to scan 140 slides from a Carosel tray. 6. Negative holder: ineffective when negatives are old and wanting to curl. Plastic frame is not stiff enough to prevent negs from curling. need more edge holders. 7. if negs are cut in strips of 4 you can only load 2 strips at a time due to lack of edge holders 8. included photoshop elements software is version 9; version 11 is current. 9. image quality from slides: good; prints: good+; negatives: fair. 10. no 802.11 ( wireless) support

Just purchase the new Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner after my Epson 1240U Scanner no longer worked with my Imac Snow Leopard operating system. Not to my surprise, the V500 worked perfectly the minute I set it up and downloaded the new software. Needless to say, they made great improvements to this new version compared to the old 1240U model. Prints were incredibly sharp and the colors were vivid. Couldn't tell the difference between the original and scanned copies.

An excellent choice

By MTShooter from Montana on 02/14/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used this scanner to digitize well over 3000 medium format transparencies and the results have been consistently superb! The included masks are a bit on the flimsy side so I recommend care in using them, but mine have held up well to date. I have also scanned over 1200 35mm slides and negatives with just as impressive results. The scanner could be faster, especially when using high resolution, but that would obviously increase the cost and/or reduce the quality of the scans. I highly recommend this scanner, and have done so regularly and many people that I have recommended it to have bought it and also love it.

The reproduction is excellent. The software could use some help! In the Full Auto mode, the program closes each time a scan is completed, so doing a large amount of scanning is tedious. The best way to use the V500 for large amounts of scanning is the Full Auto mode so one must endure the extra work for each photo.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

By Karen from Butler, PA on 01/22/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner so that I could copy old photos and old recipes in family members' original handwriting. This scanner is doing a great job. With support from staff at my local Mac Store, I have learned to use it very well with my Mac computer. It was difficult to install since I could not use the CD's that came with the scanner. However, Epson telephone support staff guided me through the process.

There are very few items these days that are truly "plug and play" but this scanner is. Install the software, plug it in and start scanning! I am very happy with this product. I am using it to scan family photos and a few documents. It is fast enough and the scanned quality is great. Very easy to manipulate the photos to get the results you want.

I purchased this scanner after reading on line reviews. I must say, I agree that this is an awesome product. I rescued old slides that my Father took. His photos of Honolulu in 1946, when he was in the service and many old family memories are now preserved. The scanner and software were very easy to install and use. I was able to restore color and fix dust and scratches from the old slides. Thank you Epson. Great product!

Easy to Set-up and Use

By ILoveEm from Sierra Madre, CA on 01/09/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

While I can't compare this scanner to other photo scanners, it seems to work well, and was easy to set-up and use. I'm using it primarily to digitize old family photos, and the process is going smoothly. The only issues that I have had are that the scanner doesn't always recognize when a new format (picture size) has been scanned unless you perform a preview. So if you are scanning a lot of similarly size photos, this isn't an issue, but if you are switching back and forth (from say, polaroids to 4x4 prints) it is time-consuming to preview each photo. The color fixing seems to work well, and the dust and scratch removal feature is nice. I will say that I have had issues trying to keep the scanner bed clean, as it tends to get oily/dusty as photos are transferred. Cleaning with a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner was not all that effective.

Affordability with excellence

By mario from In the middle of nowhere, in Missouri.... on 01/08/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am was professional photographer long before the digital age and for more than 25 years, I found myself with more than a dozen boxes full of color slides and negatives. (more than 10.000 photographs between color slides and negatives.) The V500 is all I need to transfer my photos into digital images. The features that this scanner saved me an incredible number of hours of Photoshop in trying to fix the negs and slides. It is fast, compact and, most of all, affordable. I know that there are different scanners that can do the same thing, however this one is the one that can transform a faded color slide into a color slide with vivid and full colors. I do recommend the V500 to anyone that has images to transfer an do not have time or the expertise to play around Photoshop or similar image enhancing software.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

By jmcgeel from Sun Prairie, WI on 12/23/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

About a decade ago I bought an Epson Perfection 1200U scanner and have scanned thousands of prints and negatives with complete satisfaction. But I also have several thousand 35 mm slides and have not been able to satisfactorily scan them on my 1200U. Recently I came across several glowing reviews of the V500 which included high praise for the quality of slides scanned on it. So I decided to give it a try and ordered one from Epson. It arrived only two days later and as I unpacked it I noted the attractive appearance and look of quality. Connecting it to my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and downloading the latest Epson Scan software took only a few minutes. I have now scanned over 400 prints and 200 or so 35 mm color slides in the Full Auto Mode without any problems and with excellent results. Some of the slides are more than 60 years old and in glass mounts. They all look great although they would look better if I had been more careful when mounting them to avoid fingerprints. I don't believe it was a good idea to mount them in glass but to a teenager it seemed like a good idea. The commercial slide scanning companies I originally contacted were all reluctant to process slides mounted in glass and those who were willing to do so wanted a big surcharge in addition to their already very high scanning charge. So I'm real happy with my new V500 which cost only a tiny fraction of what commercial scanning of a few hundred slides would have. I've been able to compare my results with those of a friend who had some of my slides commercially scanned for a project he is working on. I can see no difference even at reasonable zoom settings.

Excellent Scanner!!

By Mschierb from Snellville, GA on 12/13/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had several brands of scanners over the years including Epson. Some have been great and others were not so great for one reason or another (usually speed and set up issues). The Epson Perfection is not only fast but is also an excellent way to scan multiple media formats easily and clearly. With the inclusion of Photoshop Elements with the scanner, you can scan and create right out of the box. The set up was simple and easy to do. Load the software, plug it in the port, and ready to go. Can't be any simpler than that! I highly recommend this scanner to anyone. It's priced right, has great features, and with the use of LED, warm up time is quick unlike most scanners in this price range. For the best bang for your buck, you cannot beat this Epson scanner.

Wow !

By Gaulois from Kaufman, TX on 12/10/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just used it last night, made test runs scanning paper, 35mm negs. and some slides. WOW ! I must admit that when I placed the order I didn't know what I would get. I got plenty ! I only used it on auto mode but looked at the advanced settings and it looks promising. Easy set up, and a no brainer to operate. Scans are fast and quiet. It just chirps softly. Uploading fast to my PC on Windows 7. The quality is perfect. I tried a few 50yearsold family pic. slides from 1988/89 and negs, from the mid 90's. Very impressive results. It surpassed my expectations. Just be gentle with the negs. and slides holder, that would be the only weak point if you were too rough.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

By Frank from Fairfax County, Virginia 22003 on 12/05/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Very good scanner, scans at 4800 dpi in a timely fashion using the Professional Mode, no significant warm-up time, installed easily. I was unable to get it to scan only part of the scan table so a 4800 dpi scan of a 4 x 6 photo is much larger than it has to be but that is only an inconvenience unless your computer is short of memory or has a slow processor when editing.

I have had this scanner for almost two years now. I have scanned a few thousand photos. I have used it to scan very old family photos, many that are black and white to copy to dvd and share with family members. The scans of both black and white and color photos look as good as the original photos and really look good when viewed on tv. I have also scanned 35 negatives and the scans are as good as the prints. I highly recommend this scanner.

THE V500 out of box was easy setup. Initial scans were to dark but after changing to professional mode and making a few adjustments I get scans that are great!! I have about 600 slides from the 50's and 60's I wanted to convert and I had trouble putting out the money for a scanner just for that purpose. My brother recommended this scanner and it is great, It's exactly what I need and when I'm done with the slides I have a document scanner. I've spent 30 years in the printing business running all kinds of production equipment and this scanner is very good for the price and ease of use and it also comes with Photoshop Elements which makes this scanner a bargain. I gave this product 5 stars because putting it in operation was quick and easy and it makes a good quality scan.

Some times they really do work.

By dipole from West Palm Beach, Fl. on 11/18/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

First, it helps if you have had a scanner before. They all (most) scanner work the same way. DO NOT plug in the scanner until you have installed the soft ware. Turn off your security soft ware. Keep the box, it has the Serial number. It does take some time for the soft ware to install. NOW, Surprise, it will work. I am reviewing slide copying. No, it's not fast but not bad. The reproduced image is great. The BPI can go to 9600, but can takes forever. 600 or 800 is all you will need. You will have a choice, Scan or preview. Scan will transfer to PICTURES on to the computer. Preview will let you see the image before it goes to the computer. NOTE ! use PROFESSIONAL setting, you will see it on the sceen. To get back to scan from preview, click on preview twice. The instuctions are great until you get to film copy. EXPLORE, you will get it. Note, the top cover has two click stops to hold the lid up, see other reviews. No, the back light is not burned out. You have to turn it on, EXPLORE. Hope this helps. Great Scanner, very happy with it. The only thing that does not work well are the instuctions. It need a (Quick Start) fold out for film/slide copying. All the edit features are there. Scans direct to (Pictures) on the computer. For the money you can't beat it. BUT, take your time and EXPLORE the on screen instructions. YES I would recommend V500 to a friend, for sure.

I purchased this scanner in hopes that it would do the job of scanning my collection of old slides I had accumulated from years past. It did not disappoint me. In fact it done a better job than the one I had and was not from Epson which by the way, would not adapt to Windows 7. So I decided to switch company's altogether seeing how I couldn't find any drivers for the one I had. Like I said, I'm not sorry. Because this one will scan four slides at a time! Needless to say, that I am very pleased with this one.

I only have about 3000 that need to be scanned. Directions would have been nice.

why ask for a review since nothing will change

By jg from northeast u.s. on 09/22/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

the machine itself is simple to use. the price was right. quality seems adequate. its not as fast as they claim it to be. what really slows the process down is the use of the software. instead of just one inclusive interface application with top menu toolbar choices, you have to chew your way thru multiple application and windows to setup a scan for doc type, parameters, process, etc. its ridiculous. if you need to append pdf docs, its another long drawn out process. it seems your better off directly using the adobe app to do so. then theres the help app. its in html format. again a cumbersome ancient format. which isnt printable unless you want to open every single link and print it. all other info is in pdf format. why couldnt the most important info be in pdf format? why should the customer have to do it? theres a lack of choices and preferences as to the use of the apps themselves. e.g. -- epson scan app.--scan a doc and it closes. i should have a choice as to whether it stays open or closes, no matter what mode is chosen.....auto..office...etc.

Good scanner w/ a design flaw

By Jelly from Baltimore, MD on 09/14/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner to use in my classroom computer lab. Overall it's a good scanner and has nice resolution, speed, and so far it has been easy for my students (grades 9-12) to use with minimal instruction and help. There is a design flaw that isn't a huge deal, but for the price of the scanner I'm annoyed. The scanner arrived as a regular flatbed and I had to take the lid off and put the new lid with a document feeder on. The switch that locks the document feeder lid into place is located in a place where, if it is locked, the cable that connects the scanner to the computer cannot be plugged in. Therefore, I have to keep the document feeder lid unlocked. This means that it can be lifted straight off the scanner.
