55 scans later:

By Strega from Richmond, VA on 10/04/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought V550 to replace an older Perfection whose performance was excellent. Looking for the same software, one that allowed me to scan as close to the original as needed. This allowed me to use Adobe Photoshop CS3 to work on negatives and slides, as well as photographs to finish my work. While this is a hobby, I want excellent results without having to by the ultra scanners that professionals would use. Have scanned photos from the 1930's with really fine results; same for the slides and film I've scanned. Great buy for the money.

Fast, easy, accurate

By Doug from Upper Mid-West on 09/29/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanner works as advertised, but most scanners do. Overall, it is fast and the colors are accurate. What impressed me was the software, which can make or break any product. The software is easy to use and intuitive. The OCR that is bundled with it is amazing. It can reproduce printed pages, including the embedded images, and place the editable object into Word or a PDF. The conversion is very accurate and will format the final document to look like the scanned document. Finally, if you have Adobe Photoshop 4.0, this scanner interfaces seamlessly with the Adobe software.

Inferior OCR software

By Merc from Indiana on 09/27/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pretty good scanner for the price except... The OCR is awkward to use since one must use (included) ABBYY FineReader Sprint 8.0. And 8.0 does not OCR into .docx, so either one must buy an expensive upgrade or use a clumsy work-around. At the least, Epson should have included the upgraded FineReader.

very nice scanner

Bottom Line:

It was time to scan in a whole lot of slides, and I was not too happy with the results I was getting from a couple of older scanners. This unit got a rave review in a newspaper column, and I found a refurb unit at the Epson store. It did the job very nicely, and I look forward to trying it out with some B&W negatives.

Great piece of equipment!

By cowmanfl from Center Hill, FL on 09/11/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used Epson printers and printer/scanners before, so had an idea of what to expect, but was not prepared to be this impressed by the V550. The software installation was very easy and straightforward, and the software itself is clear and simple to use. All of the options (and there are many) are clearly available and those that I've used have functioned flawlessly. I'd read reviews noting the "loud" sound produced while in some scanning modes, but have found that not to be the case with mine. It operates quietly and with surprising speed considering the density of the scans I do for photo and slide retouching. I'm extremely pleased with this scanner and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting quality scans of photos, slides and negatives.

I have this scanner for 2 days. Easily installed software - and wow. It is great!. I have not yet used all the functions available, but scanning multiple photos, some very old, is a snap. I have used the edit and photos are immediately improved. The scanned photos are automatically saved in my Pictures folder on my hard drive and I have copied to other appropriate drives. Just wonderful!

WONDERFUL Scanner V550

Bottom Line:

I've had an Epson V500 Photo Scanner for many years when I decided to give it to a relative and upgrade to the newer V550. I've been very pleased and satisfied using both scanners in the "Home" mode being able to control the quality of any document being scanned or copied. I would recommend the Epson Perfection V550 Photo to anyone wanting to have the easiest and least steps for quality results every time!.

Very Easy and Convenient

By Doug from Illinois on 08/04/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I previously had an Epson V500 scanner - physically similar to this one, but the controls have been simplified. Just select the "Full Auto Mode," and no other buttons or selections need to be made. Of course, there are advanced selections, but for my occasional use for email attachments or web posts, they are not necessary. Setup was easy, too.

I had a 10 year old scanner that was not being cooperative with slides, so I replaced it with the Epson V550. It is very user-friendly and the quality is fantastic! Colors are vibrant, detail is crisp, and I am so pleased! I have quite a few slides to convert and also many old family photos (some tintype!) and I can't wait to get them into digital format. I would heartily recommend this scanner.

Mediocre product

By SteveFranz from Dallas, TX, USA on 04/29/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased the V550 to replace a much used V500 that died after a long life. My first impression out of the box was that it was really cheap and plasticky - not nearly as substantial as the V500. Software installation was a snap. Then I powered up the V550. Got the error message "cannot communicate with scanner." Restarted the scanner several times and it finally agreed to communicate with my computer (Windows 7). Photo scanned OK. Then I tried the Transparency Unit "cannot communicate with scanner." Restarted AGAIN, then it recognized it and I was able to scan some film. My primary scanning software is VueScan. So I started that software. Would not start up - so I rebooted the computer. Then I was able to run VueScan and it did recognize the V550 for reflective scanning. But so far I have been unable to get it to recognize the Transparency scanner. I'm not a happy Epson Customer at this point. I have contacted support - depending on their response I may be able to change this review.

Received Perfection v550 last week and spent a most frustrating weekend trying to install its software. I could never get beyond 10% on the installation proress bar as a "setup Error' notice would pop up. Oddly enough when I clicked to close the notice, installtion would continue. But when I tried to start the machine I was greeted by another message advising that v550 could not communicate with my computer. So I jumped through all of the remedial hoops for 3 days without success and my computer now has the hiccups as a result.

Epson Perfection is Perfection

By Cherie from South Range, WI on 03/18/2015

Bottom Line:

One of the best purchases I have ever made. I had wanted to get a photo scanner which could scan negatives and slides and it is so much fun to use. The images are brilliant on their own without manual editing. Easy to use, even for a tech naive person. The instructions that were installed on my desktop covered all of my questions. Bought on sale but would have paid full price. So glad I chose another Epson. I also have an Epson Workforce 2540 and it is perfect also. I will not ever buy anything other than an Epson. I even bought a workforce for my parents because it is so easy to use.

scanning slides

By Recollector from Austin on 02/26/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanner comes with a tray suitable for scanning 4 slides at a time, and with an 'auto' mode that does so without intervention. This capability is not uncommon, but still a real time saver. It would be nice to have a glass lens to hold the slide down if curled, but one can improvise. The driver has a checkbox to automatically orient slides correctly, but this is not reliable (no big deal). The one characteristic I did find disappointing was that each slide holder position has an indent so you can easily remove the slide after scanning, but the indent isn't deep enough to be able to hook the edge of the slide with your fingernail. I had to take a small file and bevel the edges. Unless the slides they used to test this holder had really thick frames, they could not have tested removing slides after scanning. The scanner is not nearly as solid as my Epson 2450, but seems to work well otherwise.

Great for Photos, marginal for negatives

By Octrooi from St. Louis, MO on 01/30/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This unit performs very well for photos and documents, and the software is fairly easy to learn. In some cases, it does a good job with negatives, but there are two limitations: (1) Negatives can only be scanned in a small section in the middle of the scanner. You cannot cover the entire scanner with negatives. (2) The software automatically separates the negatives, but often separates them in the wrong place, particularly near the end of a negative strip and whenever anything other than standard 35 mm negatives are scanned. There is no way to disable the automatic separation. 5 Stars for photos and documents, 2 stars for negatives.

good scanner with clunky software

By AZJohnB from SE AZ on 12/27/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am scanning mostly documents. I replaced a V100 with the V550. The 550 seems to use the same clunky software that came with the V100. While the scanner is fast (much faster than the 100), the software does it's best to slow you down. New in the software is a requirement to wait after scanning for a conversion to pdf format. You still need to open a separate window to assign a location to store the created file. The software opens the containing folder after the scan making you search for the file. Why not just open the file?. Worst, it assigns 3 digits to the file name; in my use I need to manualy remove them using the rename function. Great scanner, unwieldy software = 3 stars.

Epson v550

By molly005 from Sparks, Nevada on 12/19/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

So far I have only done slides with the scanner and so far so good. Quality of scan is excellent. Can only do 4 slides at a time at about 3 minutes per set at 600 dpi. I have 1800 slides to do. about 90 hours. Good thing I am retired and have time. On the negative side, you can not lift the slides out of the tray without finger nails or sticky tape on the end of a pencil to get them out. Pour design. Using something sharp could scratch the screen. But for the price it does a good job of scanning. It has all kinds of settings, all the way up to 2400 dpi but that takes forever. I don't play well with computers and found it fairly easy to use. Did have some help from a friend.

I was looking for an upgrade to my old Epson Perfection 4490 scanner. Mostly to do photos. Researched several photo magazines and the 500/550 was highly recommended as one of the best. I have used it for several months scanning family photos for retention. It has worked well (faster than my old one). My only compliant is sometimes it has problems discriminating between photos when I do 4 or 5.

Purchased this scanner to transfer my extensive slide collection to the computer. It words very well, except that the custom tray only does 4 slides at a time, and is a bit slow. If you have the time and patience, it's a great machine for this purpose.

The scanner should come with a printed manual, rather than having to go to the online guide. It's much more simple to pick up the manual rather than print 100 plus pages.

Epson Perfection V550 Photo Scanner

By photramper from Northern Illinois on 11/13/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second Epson scanner. I used a V500 for over three years. Both scanners worked flawlessly. The real treat was the extremely easy set-up to my PC (Windows 7). Within a few minutes I had been scanning photos both B/W and color without a bit of trouble. By the by, one can scan multiple photos at the same time but you will need to experiment placing them on the glass so they reproduce separately within your software program. This will save you some time. I have used the custom setup for some of my "not so good" photos and again it is very intuitive. I have used the slide application a number of times without a hitch. I highly recommend this scanner to anyone who wants to scan old and new photos, documents, slides and negatives. A great product.

Epson v550

By LTL from CA on 09/19/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great scanner ! Works great on pictures and negatives. Better quality than I would have thought. Easy to use also once you get the hang of everything. My major complaint is the instructions that come with this unit. They are vague and hard to follow, almost like who ever wrote them up is trying to confuse you rather than try to instruct you. I learned more from watching a 15 minute youtube video on how to use this unit, than I did in 2 hours of trying to read the manual. This is one area that could use some improvement for this machine. Other than that I am pleased with it.

One of my hobbies is to gather, organize, and digitize family records - documents, photos, etc. I have long wanted an affordable way to make high resolution copies of photos, and especially to be able to make slides and/or prints from old filmstrips and 35mm transparencies, both positives and negatives. I finally learned about this Epson scanner from my brother who also has one and uses it for the same purposes as I do. Thanks Epson!

The instructions were clear and concise and during my first round of scanning it was simple to intuit what to do, where to go next. So far I am very pleased. Awesome Scanner

By sbradley from Southern California on 07/31/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am in love with scanner. Very quick scans and easy to use and as a photographer that does do slideshows and photo retouching this scanner has been the perfect cost worthy scanner. Be prepared for any and every defect to show though when scanning, it is so fine that it finds stuff our eyes can not can not see and with my profession it is great, but to a normal user preserving photos you might be surprised...lol. Well worth the money, I should have bought this along time ago instead of dealing with my all-in-one printers for scanning. The scan time on this is remarkable and if you place multiple pictures or document on the bed of the scanner and give them space, the scanner will automatically separate them for you and technically you get 2 or more scans in one, so that is a HUGE plus when time is money for me on this scanner!

My Epson scanner works fine. The only issue is, I wish that the on-off switch was a toggle switch in stead of an in-out button leaving you wondering if you really turned the thing on or not. Old Family Slides Project

By Becca from Kalamazoo, MI on 07/12/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought the Epson Perfection V550 to scan very old family slides and photos. The slides were easy to do: The slide holder made it simple. I haven't started scanning the photos yet. The V550 is quite a complicated scanner, with many features I haven't yet figured out. The digital manual is not as helpful (read: basic) as I'd like. Yet, I expect I'll be able to figure the steps out---through trial and error. V550 has lots of scanning options!

Great Scanner!

By scsmitty from Greenville, SC on 07/10/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Hardware and software are both intuitive and easy to use. I have been scanning mostly 3x5 glossy photos, but also used it for some slides from the '70s. Works great for all. I haven't experimented much with different modes of operation, using the system in 'Full Auto' mode. System is reliable and consistent. Only complaint is about the template that holds slides. It needs to be positioned carefully on the scanner bed, but the arrangement for assuring that positioning is not too good. Only other wish would be for faster speed. I've got thousands of photos to scan, but never enough time to do it.

It works. Every time. And it was intuitive to set upright out of the box. Occasionally I wish for the capacity of a bigger plate size but for 99+% of what I do it does it all VERY WELL. My main use is copying old family photos so I can digitally improve them but I also digitize most of my financial records and important papers with this scanner. Not a heavy user, only some 1,400 photos and 400 documents have been scanned in five months, but I love this unit.

A good scanner with some glitches

By John from Pittsburgh, PA on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scanning is very clear and accurate. However, many times on start up I get a message that the scanner and the computer cannot communicate. After checking all connections I have to unplug the scanner from the outlet and/or the USB port to get it to work. Sometimes when I am scanning slides it will scan all four slides and the slide holder as one image. After deleting the false image, I try again and it works fine. When all goes well it is a good scanner.

A worthwhile upgrade

By Photocollector from Chicago on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I upgraded to this Epson scanner from an Epson unit several years old but which was very familiar to me in my work. That unit died finally and was beyond salvage. Initially I was frustrated by V550 but soon realized I was frustrated by its broad range of features that I was unfamiliar with. Today after teaching myself how to make use of its options (am I the only person who prefers hard copy user manuals and not online versions?), I am very happy with the V550, particularly its four-way customizing of photo scans: from press-the-button scans for everyday use to a myriad of sophisticated options for refining and enhancing color and contrast. I also am impressed with the V550's ability to scan color and b&w negatives for making prints. The unit's design also is pleasing: sleek, compact, handsome.

Epson V550 Photo Scanner

By Dave from Oakdale, CT on 05/24/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I needed a replacement scanner for film; I compared features and prices between brands and models and the V550 was the winner. The setup was fairly simple, but the operation can be difficult even after using it for a couple weeks. I use the V550 through my PC vs the buttons on the front of the V550. There are multiple modes of operation and I mainly use the Professional Mode. A couple of things to remember are if you set up a location to send your scans to, the program will default to that location until you change it. Also, even if you delete a file and re-scan it, it will go to the next file number. The Digital ICE software is great, I had 45 year old slides with dust, etc and the scans were fantastic. The scan speed is slower when you push the dpi to greater than 300. A plus is using the print P/B on the V550 front panel, it brings up a menu on the PC asking what you want and then brings up a menu for your printer so you can choose paper, photo paper, size, etc. and then print the scan. A negative is the power P/B. It offered no resistance when I pushed it and I thought it was broken, however when I looked at the front panel Ready Led I saw it lite. Another negative is the templates to hold the film, they are light weight plastic. However, I have found sites online that offer replacement templates and the document matte (white removable screen in lid) and the prices are very reasonable. One last note, when I scan multiple items in the Professional Mode and press Preview, some settings changed. Before I press Scan, I find I have to go back and press Select All and Digital ICE. I am glad I purchased this scanner.

Just what I needed

By good listener from Undisclosed on 05/22/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

As many of you have, I have precious film images that I want to preserve. I have also many photo prints, some in need of retouching. I did thorough research and the V550 did not disappoint when I bought it and put it to use. It scans film and reflective art beautifully. Many features allow for good results. The retouch feature is great. I am preparing three books of family history and I find that printing three copies on simple copy paper meets my needs. I scanned old 4 1/4 by 3 1/8 " negatives in halves (the scanning track is too narrow for a whole image) printed each half out and joined the prints. Have not scanned 35mm Kodachromes, but I trust that the V550 will perform. Use a flat sheet of glass if negatives curl on the scanning bed.

The Epson V550 scanner is ideal for scanning old/ more recent b&w film negatives into my computer and printing out as needed. I am pleased to save treasured negatives and reflective prints from my family history. The features of the V550 give good control over the scans. A call to tech support was helpful in determining the point in the final scan where I still have the opportunity to adjust contrast and brightness of the image. I haven't scanned any 35 mm color slides, but I am confident that this machine will do the job well. Highly recommended.

Restoring 45 year old slides

Bottom Line:

I'm using the V550 to scan/digitize my old slides. The V550 captures everything from my 35mm slides. Then I restore those digitized images using CS-5 and Elements 8. The results are great -very satisfying. The V550, at work, is quiet and it's easy to use. (I forgot to replace the top mat (slide scanning) but was reminded. This saved me some possible frustration later.) I rate the V550 at the top.

Great Scanner

By Judith from Hernando FL on 05/06/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a jeweler and want to scan my designs for my records and also to upload to my website. I have searched for many years for a scanner that will take a 3D image and make it look really great. Most scanners do a good job on photos and documents, but a lousy job on items such as mine. After speaking with a support representative, I was directed to look at the V550 Photo Color Scanner and I read some reviews about it. One customer remarked about the great scans of her lace items and that sold me. I unpacked the scanner and and it was installed and working within 5 minutes. Voila! My jewelry looks great and I am proud to show my work on scans and not have to worry about taking photos and cropping, color balancing, etc. Thanks, Rep, for taking the time to locate a great product directly tied to my needs and requirements.

V550 scanner

By BigB from Just south of Miami Florida on 04/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been looking all over for a scanner to replace my 5 year old Visioneer that won't upgrade to W7. I needed a scanner that would do old Brownie film as well as 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 120 film. Everyone has 35mm which is no biggie anymore. Everything was as advertised. I originally went for the 600 but the store was out at the time although they had one 550 left marked down on clearance. I was told if I didn't like it they would take it back and order the 600 for me. Once I unloaded it and got everything working I did my usual and started testing it out without reading the directions. After some frustrating time I finally did what I should have and that was to read them. I highly recommend that because they are very precise and, for the most part, very clear on how to work the scanner for each of your needs. So far it does as advertised and I don't think I'll need to go to the 600 model.

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

if you absolutely need to scan in negatives or slides should you consider this product. It is absolutely the SLOWEST scanner I have EVER used. It does offer a number of options in terms of selecting what you are scanning but it takes an average of 3 minutes to scan 4 slides - abysmal performance. BUT, was the only scanner I could find in my area that could scan negatives (only reason for purchase) and my former scanner for this purpose finally gave up the ghost. Expect nothing more than an ability to scan in negatives, film, slides, etc. and be prepared to WAIT.

Epson V550 scanner

By Bruce from Seattle, WA on 03/31/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had the Epson V550 scanner for two months. It is great. It does FANTASTIC in handling slides with high lighting contrast, much better than two other scanners I've had. Clarity and colors are excellent, and it is user friendly. And here's what's REALLY great; Epson's product support. I've used Epson's product support 3 times and gotten prompt help with a minimum of fuss. It seems like other companies ask many, many questions before they even start asking about your problem. This is the second product review I've ever written, and the first positive one - that says something pretty outstanding about the V550 and Epson. Bruce Christopherson Seattle, WA

Great for art!

By Matma from Sandy, OR on 03/27/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was looking at scanners for small colorful pieces of art. After reading many reviews online, I was apprehensive. Even well rated scanners had significant numbers of haters. Setting it up sounded like a nightmare. Fortunately, set-up was simple. (My operating system is Mac OS X 10.9.2) The initial scans of my art were awesome-very true to the original. To ensure success, be sure to select the "Software Updater" when downloading the software from the enclosed CD. After it is loaded, run it to see if there are new updates by selecting it manually after it is installed. It does not automatically check for updates when you download it to your computer. I am thrilled with the results I have gotten so far and I look forward to experimenting with all the settings!

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use the v550 for scanning slides and printed pictures and downloading them into iPhoto. It's easy. The best part is the auto correct. Pictures that are 30yrs old with the color completely faded look like they were taken yesterday. Great product.

I am very happy with the scanner, I bought it to convert slides to JPEG. The quality is fabulous! I wish that it was easier to put the slides in the holder. You have to pick the holder up to remove the slides, they stay on the scanner and have to be picked up separately.

Excellent Scanner At An Affordable Price

By Holgie from El Paso, TX on 03/06/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been a hobby photographer for a very long time. I used to shoot 35mm film on a Minolta 7000 which was state of the art when it came out. This camera took excellent images of priceless memories of my family that I need to preserve for my kids and grand kids. I have to digitize several hundred images and now actually look forward doing it thanks to the V550. I have an all-in-one Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier that includes a feed scanner which is fine for paper documents but not for high quality prints. The rubber of the mechanism that feeds the scanner leaves big stretch imprints on the actual prints. An absolute no-no for irreplaceable images! The Epson Perfection V550 is ideal for this task and so much more. My expectations were high but the V550 far outdid itself and superseded my expectations. The image quality that I saw on Adobe Photoshop is nothing less than outstanding. Pictures older than 50 years from World War 2 were restored to almost new. This is my very first Epson product and I am very impressed. The initial setup couldn't be easier and also was very fast. The Epson V550 scanner absolutely deserved the PC Magazine's Editors Choice award!! Bottom line: Do yourself a favor and get the Epson V550 for yourself and do the same as I did. Get the pictures in the box because they are forgotten treasures.

works well!

By Ciarrai from Tacoma, WA on 03/04/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this unit to replace my Epson Stylus Photo RX700- which is old and won't scan to the newer GB memory cards... only MB cards, which you can't find any more. I have been scanning old photos with this unit, using different modes- I use professional mode the most so I can crop a pic and change the target size before scanning. Have also scanned slides in different modes- had a bit of trouble with "auto" mode once or twice when scanning slides; scanner failed to identify them as slides and scanned as a photo instead- which resulted in a scan of the slides and brackets they were in. But all in all, the scanner has worked well in scanning slides and photos. Haven't tried negatives yet. I also have not been able to use Digital Ice, yet. It shows up on the screen, but unable to click on it. I tried going to the Epson site to download the most recent driver updates, but it didn't help. I may have to do some other updates. One thing I really had a gripe about was the User Guide. The format is lousy and wastes paper, if you wish to print it out. Some things were also not very well explained.

Epson V550

By wandering wayne from Chehalis, Wa. on 03/03/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have some 220 slides from 1957 -68. I tried taking pictures of the slides, but the pink cast from degradation and different indoor exposures (outdoor were easier) made them very hard to adjust in Lightroom. I bought this scanner, snapped off the hinged holder for the 220 negs (it will snap back on) and put on three slides at a time, the center slide sitting on top of the first and last. I scanned at 48-bit and 3200 dpi. It takes my scanner about 9 min. to scan 3 slides. The color is very good as it comes from the scanner. I'm glad I bought it. I wish it was faster of course, but I'm saving time in the long run because there is much, much less editing in Lightroom and less frustration too.

Not So Good

By Tom from utah on 03/02/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The first one I received was defective and had to return. Additionally, the USB cord was also defective. The replacement scanned 35 mm film ok but could not scan my 35mm slides as the holder was too large. The unit is not equipped to scan 10mm film. The scanner holders are very fragile & probably would break soon. The instruction manual is lacking in fully explaing the procedures and some trial is necessary. The teck support for this model is not good - they seem untrained in the working details of the V550. Photos are no better than the multi unit 3520. The unit was returned.

I've been using Epson printers and scanners for close to 15 years. I do photo restoration as well as film scanning for clients. The restoration feature of the scanners has saved me more hours of work than I can count. And, the speed of the newer scanners is another huge time saver. I never fear when buying any Epson product.

Like the scanner - very easy to get up and running. But I am totally not impressed with the film holders. I don't think plastic can flow any thinner..! For a repetitive use item "Come On" put some plastic in it... ! The film frame is Very flimsy! I expect it to be broke within a month.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We purchased the Epson V550 Scanner to scan old photo negatives and slides from the 1950-60's. My husband and I are not very techy, but the Epson Scanner was easy to follow the instructions for setup and beginning to scan old negatives and slides. We were able to print photos that we had never seen. The V550 Scanner is well worth the money and easy to use. We would highly recommend this product.

Good Photo Scanner

By kLine27 from Martinsburg, WV on 02/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Set up is a breeze. I would have given this device five stars except for a lack in operating instructions. It's necessary to go on line to get detailed instructions but those instructions are excellent. The provided setup instructions would be greatly improved if it only stated photo prints are copied directly from the scanning bed and are automatically named and saved to a file in My Pictures. I realized a significant production improvement over my old scanner. This is a very good scan only device and I would recommend it for that purpose. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.

Mixed

By PhillipS from Spring, TX on 02/20/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm using the unit primarily for old slides and 35mm negatives. My unit is taking about 3 minutes, 15 seconds per slide or negative (2,400 dpi). That's painfully slow. The carrier for negatives is a weak point, unless your negatives are quite flat. Any curl to them and the catches on the carrier have a hard time staying closed. They need to make this from beefier material. Yesterday when I powered-on the unit, I had the lid open for the first time when the scanning light did a self-test and was disappointed to see dust on the inside of the glass scanning surface. If I had seen this before the 30-day return window, I'd have sent it back pronto. Unfortunately, I'm just a few days past. I do like the fact that the software automatically isolates each slide or negative image and creates a separate file for it. That's sweet.

The scanner operated flawlessly out of the box in the automatic mode with color slide and color negative. When I tried black and white negative, the automatic mode misaligned frames and stored the file as a negative. I then tried the professional mode, all issues with black and white negative was resolved. I will be using the professional mode which allows a multitude of scanning control.

Better than expected!

By Cheryl from Michigan on 02/17/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have an HP 4 in 1 printer, copier, scanner, fax and I have scanned in over 1,000 old pictures from the 1950's - 1990's etc and was mainly pleased with the results. But when I got my new laptop I decided to get just a scanner that was more 'portable'. Not to say this is a small scanner, but it's a little easier to move around than my HP. I borrowed some of my dads old pictures from my dad and scanned them in. At 1st I was horrified to see all the dust!! Then I found I could customize the scan options to remove dust. GREAT! The pictures were wonderful. Sooooooo sorry I did not get this 2 years ago. Now the 1,000 + other pictures I scanned before look pretty bad.

Epson V550 Scanner

By Zathras from Saskatoon, SK., Canada on 02/13/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used the product to scan photos, negatives, and colour slides. Set up for each was simple and once I became familiar with the software it was easy to get the results that I wanted. Paired with a good photo editor such as Photoshop Elements restoring images from any of these sources is relatively easy, although I must confess that I have a lot of learning to do to be able to fully tap the potential of either the scanner or the software.

Going digital with my old family photos and negatives. I bought this scanner because it is capable of scanning 35mm negatives, so far Epson's scanner works like a charm, especially with the old black and white negatives. You can only scan 4 slides at a time(wish there was a larger holder I have many slides), but they convert to digital very nicely. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

I recently purchased the Epson V550 Photo Scanner. I am more than pleased with the results of scanning old negatives that are 60 years old. The results were excellent. I have also scanned pictures that were showing stress from being in albums that were not acid free. The scans were very good with little to no further adjustments. The various options for home, office, and professional settings are user friendly. My task of organizing our family photos has been greatly simplified.

Great Results

By Drguz from St. Charles, IL on 01/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this for scanning prints, 35mm, and for 35mm negatives. I think it does a remarkable job with prints. Slides are quite good using the Full Auto settings. Overall, I am quite pleased with the outcome of the scans. I have used custom settings and they do allow for nice tweaking. In addition, I bring the digitized filed into Picasa and find that I can color correct for old slides using "Feeling Lucky". While I am still learning, I have thousands of slides to go. I am pleased with the software and the hardware. Four slides at a time and fill the scan window with as many pictures as you can fit with a .8" gap to indicate a separate picture. A good system.

Epson V550 Great performance

Purchased the first Epson v550 and followed install directions for Mac. Upon clicking icon(s) to print or scan, I would receive a horrifying grinding sound, like the gears, then an error (communication error), flashing light. Cable was installed correctly and checked. Returned this v550 for a replacement v500 and have had no problems thus far. The Epson(s) all work well on my network as well as a recently purchased Epson Workforce 630. Was easy to install, entered IP address of my Epson printer and was located with no delay. READ THE ONLINE MANUAL(S.) Epson websites are well organized; quick access to manuals and resources.

Works great for medium format film scans

By bobv1973 from Western South Dakota on 01/12/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the scanner to scan many medium format (6x7) B&W negatives and color slides (mostly Fuji Velvia) I am a professional fine art photographer and scanner/Photoshop rookie. The slides scanned extremely well. I've printed the scans up to 13x19 with great detail and color accuracy. (Epson printer) The B&W negs scanned well but, the grain was an issue on grainy negatives. The grain reduction in the scanning software worked OK but, can't fix really grainy negatives (not the scanner's fault). Fine grained negatives worked just as well as the color scans. I have also scanned a few 35mm B&W negs with good results. I've probably scanned 50+ negatives/slides and must say I am very happy especially with the Velvia slides. The film holders while feeling flimsy actually hold the negatives very securely. The scanner controls and software are quite intuitive. I'm getting good results without really reading the instructions. That's my next goal... One other feature that is helping me is to scan/print B&W negs prior to going into the darkroom. I can see so much more clearly how the negative is likely to print which is a real time saver since I still like darkroom prints for B&W. The only feature I wish it had was an ability to scan large format film. Overall, the scanner is doing everything I bought it to accomplish. The output is definitely of high enough quality for exhibition and sale.

V550 is as advertised - so far

By The Duke from Tulsa, OK on 01/12/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My wife has used the V550 to scan some 1,000 slides and it has worked as advertised. We are very pleased so far and would recommend this scanner. It installed perfectly on our Windows based PC. Simply follow the instructions. Although the software is not graphically current with technology as a Windows based system, it is thus far working fine. We've not had to use many of the options, but the ones we selected for scanning slides have done a great job. Color enhancement and scratch drop out seem to be working as expected. Again, just follow the instructions. I'm looking forward to using it to scan pictures and documents (for loading into Word) and I expect no problems based on its performance so far. I would strongly recommend the scanner, even for a novice. My wife is not a rocket scientist and she has still managed to master its use.

I was disappointed with the Perfection V550 Photo scanner. The scanner hardware worked okay, but no better than my old scanner. The software was poor and not helpfull. It didn't even open the image just scanned! I had to go searching through hundred of files in the My Pictures folder. It also offered no touch up tools, which my old scanner does. I returned the new scanner. I'll continue using the old one.

Bottom Line:

I was more than ready to use this scanner as my old Epson was not compatible with Win7. The new technology is a wonderful improvement. Photos scan in beautifully and I was most impressed with the OCR scans into Word. I scanned in 80 year old newspaper clippings and they were read with little need for corrections. Not only read, but columns and page sizes adjusted. As the family historian I need to have a scanner that will enable all of the old documents to be digitized and I believe this scanner is up to the task.

I have an epson all in one printer... It is much more intuitive. I have been unable to find the command (if there is one) to "auto-detect" the size of my scan. Also, even though trays for film,.. are included, there is no good place to store them. I fear they will break in a short time. I gave three stars because perhaps someone with more experience would be able to use. Otherwise, if I cannot get this scanner to work as easily as my all in one, I will return the V550 and continue to use the all in one for scanning my pics.

Bottom Line:

I found it to do a very excellent job on 35mm slides and negative film. There is a mask that comes with the unit that looks big enough for 120 size film and I can put 120 size slides in the 35mm holder but have not tried those yet. Excellent item. I already had a flatbed on a Epson all-in-one and the scanning software is similar. Now when I select the scanner, a little window pops down to ask "which one".

poor instructions

By carguy from Lexington, Ky on 01/03/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

All you get with your purchase is a quick start sheet that makes it sound like you just press a button and everything is perfect. Not so! Even the supplied CD instructions just scratch the surface, at best. You must devote a lot of time to figure out how this thing works because you're on your own. I would not have bought it if I had known this. As for the rating, I have never owned a photo scanner, so I didn't have a comparative baseline, so I gave it a 3 because of the lack of complete instructions. I expected more of Epson.

I have just had this scanner for a short while but I am extremely pleased with it. I am using to scan black and white and color negatives. It works very well, producing extremely high resolution photos. The scans come out as positive images, which I edit with Photoshop. The quality of scanned negatives does exceed that of digital photos, even with a good digitial SLR camera. I am using the scanner in conjunction with the Artesan 1430 printer, and am getting professional quality large format prints. Its a great combo. I am putting my enlarger away again!

V550 photo scanner

By Interurbans from Long Beach CA on 12/31/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this because of my experience of using a Epson 3170 with V500 software. I needed the a scanner now and was looking to buy a V500 but the V550 was all that was available and I paid full retail. I am happy with my purchaser. I scanned over 400 prints at 300 dpi over 3 days and they could have not been better. I have scanned negatives and slides with excellent results. The film holders could have been better. I use cutout vanilla folder paper as guides for negatives with a newton free glass to hold the negatives down. I would have liked a larger exposure area for negatives and more documentation on how to use the buttons, "fix" and other features and how to best use the software. I especially like the software where I can set the resolution, image type like tiff, j-peg etc, set contrast, density etc. I Love this scanner and would highly recommend it. I use it to scan family photos, negatives and slides. I also use it to archive historical negatives and prints.

I loaded the software (and attached the unit to) a Win-7 machine. This machine already had Epson scanning software on it for a "all-in-one" product I have had for some years and at first, I wondered how to start the software. I found that now my Epson scan icon generates a pull-down small window where I can select which scanner I will use. The V-550 will be used mostly for slides and 35mm film. I wish it were also possible to use it for 120 or 620 size film as well. It is an excellent product which replaced a 7 year old scanner that could not be used on W-7 and which had gasped it's last. If this one lasts as well it is better than excellent.

Epson V550

By Wyatt Hertz from Illinois on 12/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Things did not start out very well, the first V550 scanner I received was DOA. The second worked and is still working. I've had it a little over a month and am very pleased. It's fast, it does multiple pictures at a time and turns them into their own files. The only issue I have is, with some pictures, I have to move the first one away from the edge so that it doesn't see the ones beneath it as part of it. That is the only complaint I have. Turns the newspaper articles into a PDF very quickly. I'm still learning how to uses it, I've scanned over 500 images so far and love it. 4 stars only because of the first box arriving DOA.

Admirable Machine

By Visionary from Athens, GA on 12/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Have only scanned fifteen photographs but every one has been reproduced exactly (even better) as I intended. So far the machine's precision and operating ease are better than expected. Only one caveat: I use Windows 8.1 and Office 2013, which required unique loading of the scanner software due to the ABBYY portion. Without that unique loading, Office 2013 is stymied; but Epson Support walked me through the fix with ease. Wonderful instrument!

Want correct color? Try Epson Perfecton V550.

By Sansho from Seattle, WA on 12/22/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

With our previous scanners, we were looking for clarity, speed, and transparency/slide capability. Our new Epson Perfection V550 reminds us the main quality we need for our use with art projects is correct color rendition. This scanner is remarkable for the correctness of the colors in the scanned image. It's also quick, and the LED light source is a nice improvement.

"THIS EPSON SCANNER IS SUPERB"

By Porchdog from Springfield, MO on 12/17/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great stand alone scanner. Beats those all-in-ones, hands down. It will do great Photo Scans with high resolutions. It is hard to find a scanner that has the hardware to scan 35 m.m. slides, photo negatives etc and make a photo from such. It has 4 programmable buttons on the front for easy scanning, or if you wish, you may bring up the software suite and do custom scanning from there. In my opinion, Epson makes the best Scanner available for home use. I have owned 5 different scanners. You cannot go wrong with this scanner. Great Price for the Value.

Scanners

By Rick from Falmouth, Maine on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the Epson Perfection V550 Photo Color Scanner because it scans slides and film in addition to photos and line art. I didn't really like the look of the thing, it was ugly in comparison to the sleek silver canonLD80 which it replaced but it works well enough and scans at a very high resolution. Speed is okay but the instructions about how to use the various plastic inserts that hold the film were not very well done in my opinion, although I was able to figure it out. Once you get used to the machine, it's fine.

Epson Perfection V550 Photo Scanner

By Fran from Largo, FL on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the Epson V550 because I had used another Epson scanner in the past that worked great. I wanted this one for it's portability. I have scanned over a thousand photos, about 300 slides and a few negatives. It's versatility is another reason I purchased the Epson V550. The quality of the scans is excellent. For photos, you can scan multiple photos at once and the V550 will scan them as individual photos which makes scanning quicker. I found the initial set up and the overall use to be easy. I took the V550 on a recent trip and scanned some family photos with no problems.

Excellent Scanner

By AndySki from Fort Pierce FL on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The scans produced by the V550 are of excellent quality. Very sharp and with accurate color. The included Abby FineReader is a very capable software package. So what's not to like? Just one thing: the plastic transparency holder for 35mm slides and film strips is poorly designed. I used to have an Epson Perfection 2400 scanner, and in that unit the filmstrip holder allowed you to simply slide the strip into the holder. It had tabs on both sides of the holder that kept the film in place by the edges. The new design that's included with the V550 has two parts: the main holder and a 2nd "retainer" piece that snaps into the main holder to hold the film in place. This is not very easy to use, as the snaps are rather tight and it feels like the "retainer" piece (which is very flimsy) will break easily. It is also nearly impossible to use on filmstrips that have been rolled up and have a curl to them unless you have two sets of hands: one to hold the film flat and the other to snap the retainer in. Fortunately I still have the old holder from my 2400 and it still lines the film up properly on the V550, so I use that one mostly. The "new" holder can definitely use a redesign or a reversion back to the way it used to be.

V550 Photo Color Scanner

By Rich from Bluffton, SC on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this scanned 2 months ago because I received a lot of family slides from the Estate of my Uncle and Aunt. The scanning process for slides is very easy and produced excellent results as well as scanning pictures. I have not yet tried scanning negatives but I am confident that process will be just as easy as the slides were. I am very happy that I purchased this scanner. I scan lots of photo's for genealogy reasons. I have already recommended this scanner to several friends and family.

Easy to setup and use. Good scanning software. Connected through my KVM switch, even though Epson doesn't recommend it. Works without issues and it sure beats having to switch connections on the back of the PC to use it with different computers.

Scanning old 35mm film slides and negatives.

By raybates from Newfane, Vermont on 12/14/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scanner because of its high resolution possibilities and for the purpose of scanning and digitizing 35 mm film slides and negatives, some as much as 35 years old. The results are amazing. These old images are coming back to life as if made yesterday, and printing up in full color quality (on my Epson 3880 printer) in such a way that makes m long for the days of film all over again! A superb scanner, and easy to set up and use for excellent results.

Great all-around scanner

By Brent from Upstate, NY on 12/09/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This scanner did an excellent job with everything I could throw at it. I did some of my daughter's artwork, some old photos, then tried some of my most challenging negatives and slides, including underwater scenes. This scanner handled all of them with fantastic quality. Some of my negatives were significantly underexposed, so I set it for 48-bit color had no problem with them at all. If you plan to scan negatives, Digital ICE is an absolute requirement . This scanner did an excellent job. Not a single spec of dust or scratch appeared in my scanned image. My only complaint is that it takes about 8 minutes per frame to scan 35mm negatives at 6400 dpi. But 3200 dpi is perfect for making 8''x10'' prints, so I will primarily use the lower resolutions, which were much faster. On the rare occasion I need to make a huge print, I can afford the time it takes at 6400 dpi since it does such a great job.

Epson V550

By Snake from Maryland on 11/27/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I owned a Nikon Cool Scan V that I bought with some foto contest earnings several yrs ago, but having upgraded my computer, the drivers no longer worked. I researched flat bed scanners and thought I'd try the V550 (actually newer than the 600) I've scanned some 35mm slides with it and was surprised at the results. Im scanning them at 600 and they look fine. I need to scan some negatives as well but haven't got around to it yet. I'm not sure should I scan them at 300 or better? Any experience in the matter would be appreciated. For the money, this scanner is a deal.

Very nice product

By Bob from Louisville, KY on 11/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After struggling with scanners on a couple of older "All-in-one" printers, I began looking for a stand-alone scanner. I found some inexpensive ones and then expanded the search a little. I have over 2500 35mm slides dating back to 1970 and have been wanting to capture them to digital. I purchased the Epson Perfection V550 scanner and am very pleased. The installation was very easy on my Windows 7 PC. I like the way the software works with the buttons on the scanner. I scanned several older picture and have copied about 100 35mm slides. I am very pleased with the ease of operation and the quality of the scans. I downloaded the pdf manual. It is a little awkward, but the information is there.

Surprising

By MWAckley from Murrieta, California on 11/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

As a former Navy Photographer and Graphic designer I was keen on finding something that really worked. I bought the V550 for scanning negatives. I found that not only was the scanning quality surprisingly good on the 35mm negatives, the software had enough flexibility to allow me to include the options that I wanted the software to take of and eliminate those I wanted to do myself. Prior to this purchase I used an outside service. My scans are either equal to or exceed those by outside services. It is easy to set up and start. Incredible!

Severe installation problems

By Leo from West Chester, PA on 11/07/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased the V550 because my 'old' Epson scanner (2480 Photo) no loger supports 'pdf' and other formats (that in itsef was a disappoinment...). Last night, having followed all the instructions on the installation CD, the scanner never came out of the 'error' mode. All the suggestions in the user guide - other than calling the help desk, not available at night - did not help. Will give a call to the help desk, and if it does not work I will return the scanner to the store.

Works great. Software is a little lacking but overall does what it is supposed to do. I would have given it 5 stars except for one thing. The front selection buttons are not lighted. This makes it difficult to select an action in low lighted room. Otherwise, it's a good scanner.
