DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER...I did 2x LEARN from me

By Plysy from Pittsburgh, PA on 04/10/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Horrible horrible horrible...YET i bought i again. WHY...the size ability of course. But what they dont tell you is...you will have to refill the ink constantly, the colors are NEVER consistent. Cheap or Brand ink doesnt make a different. Great paper helps...but then again if you wanted this for posters or brochures, then you would be using uncoated paper as well...and this machine is just not forgiving. Canvas has an issue...prints great...after 20 tries and 2 rounds of ink..in which case i could have afforded a better more reliable laser printer..which is what i just did.

Epson a Printer Dream

By gyrfalcon from Wolfville, NS on 02/26/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The most important detail for any new buyer of this machine is to match the colour management of your screen, image processing software and the printer. You really need to invest in an integrated colour management system at the time of purchase to ensure that what 'you see' on screen is what you get when you print. Once you do this, the Epson prints like a dream with highest quality B&W, matte and gloss images. Be aware that when the ink low indicator light goes on - it doesn't mean it is empty and you can often generate several more prints before replacing. A great investment for photographic artists!

Beautiful prints, but I ...

Beautiful prints, but I find the printer must be used as per the instructions, there is little wiggle room. The single sheet feeder is extremely finicky. Set up was easy and I am very pleased with the prints I'm getting. The blacks are perfect.

R2880-A keeper

By Bill from Irasburg, VT on 12/12/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am very pleased with the R2880 Epson printer. It produces very good color and B&W prints with little or no fuss. Inks seem to go a long way and don't seem to dry out if the printer isn't used for ahile. In the three years I have owned the printer I only had one failure to feed problem. It was a matter of having the unit cleaned.

Epson 2880 printer

By the photoman from Rochester NY on 10/04/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a good printer that prints colors accurately. It is relatively fast and prints up to 13 inches wide. It also can print on roll paper and rather thick media. I like that i can print labels for a CD. My only complaint is that you have to change the black ink when you switch between glossy and matte printing. This is a nuisance when you have several prints to make in various surfaces and sizes. Especially if you decide you want to print the same print in both to compare.

Epson 2880 Photo Printer

By Longhoorn from Texas on 08/03/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased two Epson 2880 Photo printers over a year ago, one I use and one my daughter uses. Both printers have worked extremely well, produced the finest photo prints we have ever printed, and had no miss feeds of the photo paper. Also, without any special treatment, the color prints accurately reproduce the pictures shown on our color monitors. We replaced two Epson 2200 printers which we have used for several years and have been very pleased with the improved quality of the color prints from the 2800 printers.

Great Printer

By Pat from Thousand Oaks, CA on 07/29/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I doubt you could find a better desktop printer. It is absolutely sensational for printing photos, and the wide carriage is a big help for some of the work I do. If you want negative comments ... It is pretty much like all inkjet printers. It's slow, and ink costs are high. I don't have a way to compare it to other printers in these two areas, but in my experience all the inkjet printers I have ever used are slow with high ink costs.

Very Good Printer

By gab from New Mexico on 07/09/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer replaces a decade old Epson wide format. I was hoping it would perform better but it passed expectations. Colors are very close to screen output, bright and large gamut. I don't use Epson papers but the printer is popular enough that very solid ICC profiles are readily available from most custom paper houses. I've shown some prints to friends and coworkers and had a two people buy photos from me. I'm a hobby photographer so no selling pressure was applied. I've given some prints to family and they have been very well received. So far nozzle clogging hasn't been a problem, but I've made prints at least monthly with it. The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is my fault. It's results are good enough I think I should have bought a wider printer rather than the 13" model.

The final prints that I make with my Epson 2880 are great. Its important to note that the digital darkroom printing process requires proof prints just like the old wet darkroom before a great final print is made. Bill Brennan

Nice printer/some software problems

By Bunny from Royalston, MA on 05/12/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The printer arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. This was refurbished so it wasn't packed like a new item, but very acceptable. Set up was relatively simple but I had a problem with the printer not recognizing the black ink cartridge as a matte versus photo cartridge so I didn't get the right paper selection. Got help from Epson and this is corrected but still have a problem with the driver upgrade. Will have to call to straighten this out. I had an Epson 2400 before and loved it so this is a great replacement!

The usual ink issues...

By TomSwirly from Brooklyn, NY on 03/14/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I bought this for a graphics project, but now I mainly use it to print black and white. Unfortunately, in order to print greyscale, you need to have the color cartridges ready - even if you never use them. In practice, it means that I have a full set of color cartridges in at all time - and then they dry out before I've used even half of them and I have to buy more at great expense. Not allowing you to print greyscale unless you have color cartridges that aren't empty is a software decision, and one that can be very inconvenient for the user. Someone actually had to do work to make this happen... There seem to be minor incompatibilities with various versions of OS/X as well - for some reason, it periodically reverts back to wanting to print everything as a long, thin "roll" document, but I'm so used to bypassing the program's dialog now I barely notice it. Still, that has caused me frustration in the past. Decent color output, works on a variety of materials. I'd give it a higher score, except I'm now going to have to take a chunk of my Friday afternoon to rush out and see where I can get a yellow cartridge to print a greyscale document..

Does a Nice Job

By BobS from Northern California on 02/28/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The R2880 is a great printer and does a very credible job with all types of media. My only complaint is the necessity to change out the photo black with matte black every time a plain paper document needs to be printed. It's time consuming, wastes ink, and it takes several attempts for the printer to recognize the change. Even with that, the printer does an admirable job at a reasonable price-point.

R2880 leaves a lot to be desired

By Redsnapper from Chicago on 02/25/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hey, when it works it works well, but if you buy this printer you'd better dedicate it to one type of black ink (matte or photo). As others have said, making the printer recognize that you've changed the type of black ink is very, very frustrating and wastes ink. For some reason, it will cease to acknowledge that there IS ink in black ink in the cartridge you've just swapped back into the ink caddy - resulting in massive waste of time and materials. The paper handling also leaves much to be desired. I've put a roll of canvas on the machine and it will start to unspool the whole thing out the front like a happy child unrolling toilet paper.

Epson Stylus Photo R2880 Inkjet Printer

By Birdman from Columbia, SC on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My printer is now over two years old. It has been used a lot. I like big prints so I hardly ever print less than 13X19. Many of my panorama prints are 13x42. The prints are outstanding with true colors and details. I can't imagine better results regardless of printer price. The only draw back is the amount of ink it uses and the expense of ink. And the fact that you have to manually change out photo black ink and matte black. Overall I give it an A+.

I used to have an Epson 2400 which was a work horse for photo restoration. When it finally expired, I bought an Epson 2880 to replace it. I used to think the 2400 was a great printer.... this one far surpasses it for quality, color matching, and in every other way as well. Great printer for the price.

I have had no problem with the printer and it reproduces colors effectively. I do have two gripes - 1) cartridges are expensive and do not last long and 2) it is a pain to switch out the regular glossy black cartridge with the matte black cartridge.

Great Picture Quality, Poor Paper & Ink Handling

By seadrive from East Marion, NY on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The R2880 produces very high quality prints, but it suffers so badly, in almost every way, in comparison to the 3880, that I can't recommend it. If you only print on 13x19 or smaller light-weight papers (the kind that you can load through the top sheet feeder), and you only use one type of black ink (be it photo black or matte black), and you really can't afford to spend the extra money it would take to buy the 3880, then the R2880 (or the newer 3000 model) might be right for you. However, if you can afford it, the Pro 3880 is a much, much better printer, and it will eventually cost you less money because the ink usage per print is much lower. If you print on paper that requires you to use the rear or front manual feed (e.g Epson Velvet Fine Art), you really need to buy a "Pro" level printer like the 3880. The 2880's paper-handling abilities are, ummm... not very good. It takes forever to get the paper to feed properly, and you don't know that the paper hasn't been loaded properly until you start a print job (the 3880 tells you immediately that you need to unload and reload the paper). If you switch between papers that require different black ink cartridges (photo vs. matte), the 2880 will drive you insane. Switching the cartridge is the easy part. The hard part is getting Photoshop (or whatever software you use) to recognize that you've switched the ink type, and to change the list of available papers (glossy/luster vs. matte). Even after updating the setting in the printer setup, you have to go back and forth from Photoshop Controls Colors to Printer Controls Colors and back, trying to trigger whatever it is that causes the ink switch to be recognized by the printer setting software. Incredibly annoying! Everything about the 3880 is better than the R2880. There's a reason why the 3880 is in the "Pro" group and the 2880 isn't. If you can possibly scrounge up enough money to buy the 3880, do so. You won't regret it!

ESP R2880 Inkjet Printer

By brosjoco from Johnstown, CO on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Colored photograph prints are superior to any other printer on the market. I liked my ESP R1990 even more because of the black ink (matte and gloss) interchangeability. The two different black inks were basically unnoticeable when printing on a variety of paper and it was not necessary to have to switch back and forth. Still an outstanding printer. Epson is still my favorite printer on the market with the exception of the ink cartridges. I wish we got more "bang for the buck." I believe the ink is too pricey and/or the cartridges are too small.

Epson2880

By photonut from Collierville, TN on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had this printer for 2 years and has never missed a beat. As long as you put in the correct settings the prints should come out as seen on the screen. Keep a supply of inks on hand as they tend to run out quickly if you print frequently. Changing carts for the matt paper is a bit of a chore but this problem has been improved with a newer model. Great for printing on CD/DVD's.

Great printer, but...

By Bill from Greenwich, CT on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great printer for high resolution color and B&W. Very rich colors and deep blacks. I print on Epson Ultra Premium Luster and Velvet Fine Art paper with excellent results. The normal rear feed tray works well with any size from 4X6 to 13X19; however with Velvet Fine Art you need to use the single sheet feeder in the rear and for thicker paper like Hahnemuhle fine art (museum etching) you must use the front feeder. I get about a 50% (or less) success ratio in getting the rear single sheet feeder to properly feed and print and the front feeder simply doesn't work. I have some Hahnemule for sale! Hopefully they fixed the problem with the 3880.

I've had this printer for 5 years. It doesn't get heavy usage, but I've printer a lot of pictures up to 13x19. I'm very pleased with the results. I can't imagine getting better images from any other inkjet printer. I've only once changed the black cartridge to use the special black and white printing. When I understood the process, and how much ink is wasted changing it over, I decided the black and white I was getting the regular way was just fine. Great printer, otherwise.

I have owned this printer for over four years and never had a single problem. I have had to make prints as large as 12x18 for exhibits of my photos and have made them to bring into the photography classes I take at ICP so I am making a fair number of prints. I consistently get positive feedback on both the B&W and color prints I make. Two complaints. It goes through ink pretty quickly so it best to keep a supply of extra cartridges on hand. Having to change the black cartridge when switching from matte paper to glossy. Over all its a good an excellent printer.

Stylus Photo R2880

By dartowner from Western PA on 12/07/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second Epson Photo printer. My 2200 was the first and is still working after 10 years. The 2880 was easy to set up and printed beautifully right out of the box. I was a bit disappointed in the size of the ink cartridges, but have not printed enough to know how long they will last. They are even smaller than the 2200. I use this to print all my original photography, including scenics and portraits, as well as all my wedding photography. I am very happy with the quality of the prints in both color and B&W. Ink tank capacity will be a concern until I have used the printer over more time. I will also reserve judgement on problems with the tanks clogging and wasting ink to unclog, as this was the main problem with my 2200.

2880 Performance

By Bob from Hendersonville, NC on 11/26/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've owned an Epson R2880 since it was first introduced several years ago and have been very pleased with the results. It has never had a clogged nozzle. I have been an avid print maker participating in monthly camera club print competitions since 1981, first using my color darkroom for about twenty years and then printing with an Epson 1270, followed by an Epson 1280. This totals many hundreds of large prints; first 16 x20 darkroom prints and then 13 x 19 digital prints. Such competition among master printmakers in one of the oldest and largest camera clubs in the country stimulated me to strive for perfection in every aspect of photography and print making, so the printers have played an essential part. My 1280 is still in use for routine office correspondence. As good as the 1280 was in its day, the 2880 provided noticably improved print quality, especially in monochrome. One of my black and white prints has won a PSA Mid Atlantic gold medal and Print of the Year in my camera club.

Awesome!

By Lindsey from Lawrence, KS on 11/20/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used my Stylus Photo R1900 for 5 1/2 years for illustration work. My illustrations involve lots of fine detail and after running my R1900 down I upgraded to the R2880 and am super happy with it. The detail in fine lines is much sharper and cleaner. It was a bit tricky transitioning from an older model to the R2880 and working with a different set of inks, but after some trial and error I've got my colors back the way I like them in print. If you are looking for fine detail, I'd highly recommend this printer.

Review of Epson Stylus Photo R2880

By Emilio from Cincinnati, Ohio on 11/18/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have this printer for one year and I am very very happy with the performance. I made a custom profile with Color Vision and the print colors match very well my monitor colors, saving a lot of paper. I use only Epson inks and Super Premium Photo Luster paper, and my prints colors are very consistent. Emilio Fernandez

This printer is really a step up from my now deceased R1800. It served me well. RIP. The R2880 has better all over color gamut. It does a very good job on the few bw pix I have done. The output on glossy papers is superior and the matte papers are also excellent. It's still very new to me but I like it.

R2880

By Anonymous from Durango, CO on 09/25/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The only thing I dislike about this printer is that you have to change the ink when you want to print different things, such as cards vs documents. This is a hassle, and don't like the fact that if you have a little bit of ink left it won't let you put that cartridge in, you have to use a new one.

Disappointing

By LadyLove from Hawaii on 09/16/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Infortunately, I have had lots of problems with this printer. Paper jams, double images, and, considering how many ink cartriges one needs, the inks are rather expensive and can only be ordered through Epson. When it does work well, the prints are giclee quality ... but one never knows when and if it will work properly.

"Don't buy it if you print unusual sizes/papers

By Cyn from Western NC on 09/06/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've had this thing for a year and a half now, and it is so frustrating that I have used every cuss word in my dictionary, and am starting to make up new ones! The interface with Photoshop is lousy. You'd think that if I made an 8x12 print (which isn't even one of their options, so I have to type it in the custom size box), that the second time I go to print the same photo it would give me that size. But no, I have to jump thru hoops and start all over. And printing on canvas or thick paper is a ROYAL PAIN. It might or might not print on the matte presentation paper. Twice I've had to run an entire roll of Epson canvas thru and re-roll it because for some reason the printer would not accept it, and it would not back it out either to re-try. I hate this thing. Beautiful prints, but it is not worth all the hassle and stress.

Great Photo Printer - but it does have some kinks

By mtmfoto from Memphis, TN on 08/05/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I gave an average rating based on the need to swap out black ink carts for glossy and matte printing. Had I known this prior to my purchase, I would have chosen a different model. Shame on me for not doing my research first. However, this printer does a great job when the correct cartridge is in place. Watch out for software related issues when using this printer. A program file called "EPAUDF01.AUD" can swell to 40 meg, causing severe print time delays. This file is often hidden deep within the Epson program files on your PC. It can be resolved, but I had to search quite a few internet message boards to find the remedy.

R2880 not what was anticipated

By University Professor from Indiana on 08/04/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This printer has been an excellent printer, when printing test strings or images that take up less than 2/3 of the paper they're printed on. The same problem arises no matter what size or what print quality options are selected when printing full page, though - the print head seems to begin rubbing back off the bottom portion of the print. I expected a lot more from an Epson printer, as I have relied on several Epson printers over the past decade or so. Maybe I just ended up with a bad egg, but this printer has been a disappointment when I thought it would be a savior in my photography course.

I have been very pleased with the quality of the prints I have make using the R2880 printer. My color prints have been vivid and very good color separation when the shades in the colors has been very close, as an example. I have found that the B&W prints I have made are exceptional. For a 13 inch X 19 inch printer it supplies 99% of all my needs. I would not hesitate to recommend this Epson Printer to any one who is thinking of getting into printing there own prints for there own personal display or for displaying in a gallery.

Epson R2880 review

By Paul from Arlington, Virginia on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this printer because of its capability to produce black and white prints. The quality is stunning; with its three black inks, the R2880 produces tonal values as good (in some cases better) than a darkroom. It also does a superb job with color. My only minor complaint is that the requirement to swap-out photo-black and mat-black ink is somewhat cumbersome, and uses a bit of ink. Nevertheless, this is great printer, and a great value for the money.

By TsqBud from Jamestown, NC on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my third Epson printer. Prints are beautiful. Two complaints. The paper feed is temper-mental. Often the printer will send several sheets through at once. Sometime it will send paper through without printing. And I don't like having to change the photo and matte black cartridges. One other small thing, the printer usually does not recognize the "number of copies" setting correctly. Maybe soon I'll go for the Epson 3000.

Epson R2880

By Aaron from Wichita, KS on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love the quality of the prints the R2880 produces. The first printer I received was DOA due to a drop in shipping. Epson was professional and quick to establish the problem and set up shipping for a replacement. The second printer worked perfectly. The amount of printing I do is pretty modest so I can not address the ink issue others have raised. The cartridges are expensive but for small jobs and home printing without waiting for jobs to return from a lab this is the right printer for me. The rebate made the choice easy for me. At full price I could not justify the cost.

I really love this printer except for one thing, and I have a note I sent for help with this situation..I'm sure the problem lies with me..It takes a long time for printer to receive print and begin print..Probably due to raw file..My major issue is also probably my fault..I can't find the settings for type of paper, and other adjustments to my prints..I utilize LR4 and just get the basic adjustments from LR...Help????!!! Other than that, I think this is the best printer I've had in forever..This is my 4th Epson, btw..Only Epson printers..Only Epson Paper..Only Epson Ink..Period!! I have "converted a number of friends to Epson as well...Keep up the great work!!!

Im a professional photographer with over 25 years of experience. I've used the Epson R1800 for quite some time now but it finally died. I purchased a R2880 and I'm very happy. I do a lot of B&W and this printer accurately shows the tones as I saw them. The color photos are spectacular and accuracy is right on with my images in Photoshop CS6 on a Mac. The cost of the ink is a bit high but you get what you pay for. I'll gladly spend my money for Epson ink and paper.

Interface could use some touching up.

By BAF from San Antonio, Texas on 05/27/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

In terms of speed, range of tonality, versatility, and general print quality I give the R2880 highest marks. Its driver/interface with Photoshop Elements can be a royal annoyance. Who, for example, ever thought that there would be advantage in defaulting to a print-with-borders setting? After every print I have to go back through a multi-click series of steps to reset the borderless option. Forget to do it just once and there's two dollars worth of paper and ink wasted. Why not simply leave it as set until changed?? Similarly, now that 8 1/2 x 11 is the default standard size for many purposes and prints, would one not expect that the driver/interface would make it easy to set up an 8 1/2 x 11 print? Nope. It is a constant pestiferous battle to get the dimensions of paper and print just right for 8 1/2 x 11. Were it not for these (and one or two other) driver/interface hassles, my rating would be an unqualified 5. The hardware and finished prints are superb.

Excellent results from sporadic use - photos only

By junglej from Colorado on 04/24/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used this printer for more than 3 years. I'm an occasional photo printer - sometimes more than a month between printing sessions. I keep the printer plugged in all the time and perhaps that helps keep it from clogging between uses. I never have paper handling issues - even from slightly curled 4X6's - and never from paper up to full width, some of which I cut myself from big sheets. Color rendition and brightness is excellent - once I figured out how to set up printing out of Lightroom - I did get my share of dull and dark prints - but always get good prints now.

Great Prints, Easy to Use

By JL9 from Chicago, IL on 04/23/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had this printer for 3 years and have had no issues whatsoever. I download profiles as well as create my own and the colors are as they should be. I also pre-coat my own papers and still no issues with the colors or my paper feeding through properly. I haven't tried printing on canvas, but that's going to be tricky no matter what prosumer printer is being used. Best to have it on a roll than a single feed. But it can be done if you know what you're doing. I don't know why anyone would use the 2880 to print documents because that's like driving a luxury sedan on a dirt road. It's a photo printer, wasn't intended to print documents.. The only two things I would change is an automatic switch from photo black to matte and vice-versa, and have higher capacity ink cartridges.

Impressive

By CarolS from Sarasota, FL on 04/18/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My Epson Stylus Photo R1800 finally died last week :( I was crushed and concerned about getting a new photo printer. The R1800 was my "special" printer, just for photos, it did a fabulous job. After much research I ordered the R2880 online and anxiously awaited its arrival! It finally came today and I was NOT disappointed! Setup was a breeze, it is very similar to the R1800 so I had no problem jumping right into printing photos immediately afterward. It may be too soon to tell but so far I am thrilled with my decision to go with this model. I only used Epson brand paper (and ink) with my last Epson printer and intend on doing the same with this one. I believe it absolutely makes a difference in the finished product to stick with the brand when printing on my Epson printer.

I don't think I can give a great review because I just got my printer. What I can say, it was easy to set up, and start printing out photos.... If I can set it up anyone can... I am learning about the different types of paper thanks to Epson Stylus 2880. I would say that I take a lot pictures, and do sell some when asked. What I don't like is changing out the black ink, when I change styles of paper.. I end up with black inn on my hands. I will keep surgery gloves when I change black ink....

I have suffered with this machine for far too long. It is incredibly finicky when used with inDesign, produces misleading error messages and takes ages to settle down after changing a cartridge. I HATE this printer

By Lambeth from Los Angeles, CA on 03/27/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

When it works properly, the result is outstanding. The problem is that it works properly about 10% of the time, and that's being generous. It has NEVER given me two consecutively successful prints. It likes to claim there is a paper jam, when there isn't. It likes to complain the paper isn't loaded correctly, when it is loaded correctly. It arbitrarily seems to ignore color profiles - where the result is dark grays, instead of blacks. I have been a fan of Epson printers and scanners for over 16 years. I have never been so angered by an inanimate object.

Epson 2880 Color and B&W Printer

By Chuck M from Columbus, Ohio on 03/25/2013

This is a great printer. It produced very true-to-monitor color prints. You have to use GOOD paper, and know your color gamuts, and set the print preview option on in the printer dialog. On my system, if the print preview looked good - I got a good print. Oh, and it makes great B&W prints too - much better than my old 8-color printer.

PhotoR2880

By Catnip from California on 01/18/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

While it is true that the quality of the photos is very good, the fact that you have to change cartridges to print photos is highly annoying. The other even more irritating aspect of this printer is that it is painfully slow when printing a document. I previously had an R800 which was extremely fast printing documents but not quite as good printing photos. Still, I prefer the R800 overall. If you are more Zen than I am, perhaps you will like the R2880.

2880 Printer

By Rod from PA on 12/23/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Visually the printer is of middle quality corresponding to its middle price -- not the level of Epson's profession printers. The roll paper is an advantage for the price and functions more or less ok. As per generally functionality, it is reasonable when new, but if you do not use it regularly, it can be a really drag trying to get it functioning again -- not an uncommon problem with color printers but I find one that can be particularly problematic with Epsons. I would not buy this again.

Very pleased with the R3000 Printer

By Rusty Stumps from Indianapolis, IN on 12/17/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was slow to purchase this printer because of negative reviews. I looked at other brands but came back to this one. Finally about a month ago I purchased the R3000 and I won't look back. This printer has run almost flawlessly right from the start. I am getting rave reviews on my prints of trips to Alaska and Yellowstone. I print mainly on InkPress Luster stock and InkPress Gloss Canvas. Canvas printing on this printer is my only complaint. Epson tries to force you to "do it their way" and use only their canvas. There are no selections for canvas in any of the menus. I tired using the thick media loading of the 13"x19" sheet stock, that doesn't work even with a backer. I finally settled on feeding it just like regular gloss paper through the top feeder with the same settings and the results have been super. Ink usage isn't anywhere as bad as has been reported. I still have 8 of the original cartridges in the printer and have printed at least 30-40 large prints of 11x14 and 13x19 size. Again, a fantastic printer and a definate if you want to show off your photography to it's best. I will be starting to sell my photo prints come this spring.

I think this is a great product, with wonderful features which unfortunately remain a mystery because of the lack of proper, comprehensive manual. Even a PDF version or QuickTime demo included in the installation CD would have been helpful.

Problem with printer, not the printing

By DiPhoto from Arlington, MA on 11/06/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This printer makes beautiful prints - from Photoshop or Lightroom, when it feels like it. Sometimes it is fine, and sometimes it does not want to feed the paper through. It either pushes it all the way through without printing, or won't feed the paper at all. If I plug it and unplug it, press all the buttons, move the paper around, all of a sudden it will print. I am using 8.5 x 11 paper, Epson enhanced Matte, from the top feeder. It is making me nuts.

Stylus Photo R2880 printer

By nsaw from Montreal on 10/17/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Have had the printer 8 months and have encountered no problems. The main aspect I'm most pleased with is the paper feed which always works! Both sheet feeder and manual. I had a Stylus Pro 3880 which did not do this well at all. A basic but important feature. Also, as I produce fine art prints on archival Sommerset, output quality meets my expectations. If you can live with the size limitation, this printer is an excellent value for professional work.

Love my new Epson R2880!

By Epson Fan from Houston, TX on 08/26/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I just unboxed and set up my new R2880 printer. Knowing it was an advanced printer with many, many features, I was concerned about how easy/hard the setup, software installation, etc. would be. I needn't have worried, as the whole process of unboxing through making my first print took less than an hour, and the results are spectacular. Thank you for an excellent printer and easy, cannot-fail instructions. I am happy, happy with my new printer!

I've never had a professional photo printer until I went to photography school and was introduced to Epson Stylus Photo R2880. I have never seen a print quality that was above my expectation and I was really amazed with the print quality when I seen it for the first time. If I have to choose on what would my professional photo printer will be, I will definitely choose EPSON R2880. EPSON will always be one printer brand I trust. PACKAGING: 5/5 PR. QUALITY: 5/5 PRICE: 4/5 Overall, I will give 5 out of 5 stars and I am very satisfied.

A Fantastic Printer

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The R2880 has been my primary photographic printer now for 2 years. I have found it to be reliable and it produces prints of a very high standard. Combined with Epson papers, clients often ask if its a "real" photo - meaning has it been produced in the dark room.

Simple, solid, gorgeous prints

By capnbob from Blue Hill, ME on 05/31/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Got this to replace my 12 year old Stylus Photo 1270. Epson gave me a little more off at the "Loyalty center", but even without that it would be a good deal I think. I only use this for photos. Have a big laser printer for office stuff. This machine will make extraordinarily good 13X19 prints (assuming you have a good digital image to begin with.) It is superior to my 1270 which is saying quite a bit. I can't justify the price of a full bore professional printer, because I don't make my living doing this--and honestly, it's hard to imagine a much better print.

Epson 2880 Amazing!!

I just got my printer today and I used the quick start guide to get going. After physically setting up and installing software, I attempted my first print I put the paper in the wrong place and it would not print. Tech service straightened me out fast. My first print was a scene in Venice. I chose it because I have a 20x30 on my wall that was done at a pro lab. I compared my print and the colors were 99% dead on. I am blown away!!!

It's an Epson!

By Lawrence from USA on 12/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a graphic artist and have always used an Epson printer to copy my computer created images from screen to paper. My Epson 2880 is quite a step up for me. It allows me to adjust for whatever type of media I am using. All of my most used media settings can be saved once I know which works best for my needs. Although the flexibility of these settings was quite daunting for me at first with so many possibilities, I now cant imagine printing without them. I enjoy tweaking as I feel it is part of my process but I appreciate that once I find the best setting I can recreate it with just one click. The only down side is that the manual is totally useless, but what else is new? I've had my Epson 2880 for over two weeks now and have used it daily. It is money well spent. I really love it. To all the critics who say large footprint what do you expect from a large format printer. I also find it quiet and as far as ink usage its not bad especially since I print at finest detail settings. If you buying this printer, and it is not your first, you must have figured out by now inks are where the profit is made. Epson 2880 also prints faster than I expected based on past experience. If you need high quality prints the Epson 2880 wont disappoint.

Good bang for the buck ....

By Mike from North East on 11/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had the 2880 for a few months and I am very pleased with the excellent quality of its prints (I have used it only to print photos and have not tried to print text since that is not what I got it for) A friend of mine has a more advanced printer that produces even better prints and can print on larger size paper, but it is also a lot more expensive. So, I have taken price into consideration when rating it 5 stars, and also the fact that now and into the foreseable future I don't see a need to print anything on sheets larger than 13 x 19. The one annoying thing about the printer is that one needs to swap one black ink cartridge when switching between printing on matte or glossy/luster paper. Usually I forget about this once I get a couple of really good prints. Make sure to download all paper profiles, and proply set up the configuration (e.g. have your photo editing software manage color ..etc.)

Prints nice but I'm not impressed

By DJTX22 from Rosenberg, TX on 10/14/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This printer does print some very nice photos but I am not at all impressed with all of the other maneuvers you have to go through to get it to print when you have to change from photo black to matte black ink. When you change from photo black ink to matte ink or vice-versa it doesn't always recognize the cartridge change half of the time. You have to keep restarting the printer or removing and reinstalling the cartridge. That causes the printer to recharge the ink more than one time and that is a total waste of MY TIME AND MY MONEY! Sometimes you have to use a totally brand-new cartridge to get it to recognize the ink cartridge that you have installed. There are times it shows that you have photo ink in the printer but will only give you the matte options (or vice-versa) to choose from to actually print. I also don't like that you have no way of choosing to print in just black and white if you have the photo ink cartridge in but you are printing on the plain paper setting; your only choice is Epson Std sRGB or Adobe RGB. Ill take my old Epson Stylus Photo R300 over this printer any day, but unfortunately Epson has not come up with compatible drivers to support the R300 with Windows 7.

Review of R2880 printer

By Monroe from Columbia, SC on 09/16/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The print quality is much better than the 2400 especially Black & White. I really don't understand why there is no cutter. I think deleting the cutter and adding a disc printer was a mistake. Anyone that prints on roll paper would gladly trade the disc printer for a cutter. The default settings print to dark, requiring custom adjustment on every print. Having to change black cartridges from photo to matte is a real pain and wastes ink. Add another slot like your competitor did. When I first started using the 2880, it started charging the ink and kept charging until the ink was almost gone. I was informed by Epson, that the printer couldn't be plugged into a power bar with other devices but had to be plugged into it's own unshared outlet. It has worked fine since then but it is a bit much to expect everyone to have an unshared outlet just to plug the printer into.

R2880 for low-volume high quality prints for sale

By Lumpy from Geneva, Switzerland on 08/16/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Over time, we have tended to use this printer exclusively for: Epson Archival Matt Paper (that comes from Japan) + the UltraChrome inks. This is an amazing combination. We receive extremely positive comments about the quality of our prints. This is of course because these wonderful inks go into the paper; they don't sit on top. Indeed, the results are so good that people say that the pictures look as if they are the actual artwork rather than prints. (The actual artworks are watercolours, and of course the Ultra-Chrome inks are pigment-based, so I guess there's a link in there somewhere). We read the independent research reviews that are available about this printer+inks+paper, and based our purchase in these results (i.e. this combination had the best results at the time). Of great importance to us is that this combination results in exceptional colour-fastness. We have kept certain prints half covered in our offices - and after 2.5 years they show no noticeable fading. We explain to customers that - based on independent research - careful storage of our prints will result in them suffering no noticeable fading over very long periods (see the actual reviews, but 70 years is likely!). Surprisingly, we see that the price of these inks is significantly lower than those of the High-Street printers, so that's another advantage. However, we have yet to find a completely reliable supplier for the inks. (You can't find them in supermarkets, of course, so on-line purchase is the only supply source). We have become used to the printer's quirk to be slow to recognise that we have the black ink for matt printing. There's no switch, so one has to repeatedly select print until it sorts itself out. But this is just a very minor niggle. When little used, we've occasionally had to do a lot of head-cleaning to get the yellow ink to work properly, but this again is a very minor niggle. Overall, an absolutely brilliant printer / paper / ink combination for our needs. 5* !

Good fit for my printing needs.

By Chris from Winnipeg, MB on 08/03/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My main printer is the 4880 I use it exclusively for fine are matte printing on various Epson papers. I had a need for a high quality photo black printer. I really did not need another 4880 and the cost and trouble of switching from matte to photo black was to high. SO............enters the 2880 it was just what I needed. Same great inks and variety of paper. It is now my fixed photo black printer. It was a great fix for my printing needs. Thanks Epson OH and the rebate was nice also.

Epson Makes Great Photo Printers

By dpg photographer from Billings Montana on 07/21/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my third 13 inch Epson Photo Printer. I bought the R2880 based on the longevity and great quality of my previous printer, a Stylus 2200, which lasted for seven very productive years. I can see an improvement in the shadow details with the 2880, and more graduations in the blacks. This is great. I was happy with the output of my 2200, but the 2880 is an improvement. I hope to move up to a 3880 in the near future, and I would recommend Epson Photo Printers to anyone that is thinking of buying this type of printer. They are great. I would like to have both blacks installed at the same time, but I chose the R2880 for price over the just introduced 3000, which has auto switching, so I cannot complain. Now please send my rebate.

I had been up in the air about purchasing this printer or the competition's printer of equal caliber. Boy am I glad I decided to go with this one! I was shocked when I debunked ink myths about this computer within my first few uses! I have printed about 40 images, and my ink levels are maybe a third of the way gone. MAYBE!! The black and white images that I printed are perfect with the different gradients of black infused in the image. The colors are vibrant and sharp, and the paper is absolutely perfect! You can't go wrong purchasing this printer! It's the best purchase I've made for my photography business second to my camera!! AWESOME!!!!

Super Star of Epson Stylus Photo printers.

By SPR2880Fan from Fort Myers FL on 05/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

As a previous owner of an Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer I am amazed at how much improvement and increase in functionality Epson has built into the R2880. Colors are richer, more brilliant, and saturated. Printing B/W photos using the three grades of black inks produce stunning large format prints. I have 30 years of photographic negatives (B/W and Color) that I have scanned as Digital images and 5 years of digital images which I am printing as 13x19 prints on the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 printer with amazing results, both in Color and B/W.

Excellent Printer!

By Just D! from Lake Worth, FL on 04/11/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a freelance photographer, specializing in automotive event photography. I purchased this printer to sell my photo's on the spot, and it worked even better than I had expected! The printer works extremely fast and quiet, has amazing quality and is great for the 'photographer on a budget.' I had done much research on photo printers, and after seeing the prices of what is rated 'amazing quality', I was afraid I would be spending a good amount of my money on (what I see as) a pretty pricey printer. I bit the bullet and made my purchase, and I have absolutely no regrets! During installation, I was ready to go through a headache attempting to install the printer on my Mac Laptop...but it was a breeze! Inserted the CD, and it just about did everything itself. I am more than happy with the Epson Stylus Photo R2880! Only downfall about the printer is requiring to change the black ink cartridge between Matte and Glossy photo's...but I don't see it as a huge ordeal!

Outstanding Print Quality

By Foto*Man from South Carolina, USA on 03/22/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The image quality and color that this printer delivers is excellent. It makes beautiful prints. I purchased three Epson papers along with the printer (Watercolor Radiant White, Velvet Fine Art, Premium Canvas Satin) and downloaded the custom color profiles from the Epson web site for these papers and use them for printing. The results are outstanding. I chose this printer because it was affordable, and it was capable of printing on fine art papers (and canvas) and it uses the Ultrachrome K3 inks. The only drawback is that you have to change the black ink cartridge when you switch between glossy and mat papers. OK, one extra gripe... the ink is expensive to replace and high capacity ink cartridges are currently not available. Note to Epson: please make high capacity ink cartridges for the R2880! One other minor nit is that it is occasionally finicky about feeding a new sheet of paper. It does not happen very often. When it does, just follow the prompts on your screen for how to clear it and you'll be fine. (The first time it happened to me, I just started pressing buttons and pulling paper and it just made things worse!) I give this printer 5 Stars even with the 1 drawback and the minor nit because it would cost a lot more to get a more highly featured printer and this one delivers outstanding print quality at a price that I can afford. Also, it is a relatively quiet printer. Not silent, but not at all noisy. In summary, I'm very happy with this printer.

epson photo R2880

By barb from rockaway, nj on 03/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the 2880 a few weeks ago to print my art work. So far, it prints beautifully and was easy to set up (I'm not so technically savvy). When I first start printing a piece, it takes a long time to set itself up, making lots of different noises (I think it's testing everything). The color is brilliant and accurate. I haven't tried larger format pictures yet. My last epson (R2400) stopped printing accurately because (I think) I didn't clean it regularly, so it's important to check the manual re: regular maintenance (won't make that mistake again!).

Excellent prints, but...

By Raoul from Philadelphia, PA on 03/05/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second R2880. The first one is still in use. It produces prints of top quality on many different types of media, from CDs and DVDs to 13 x 19" on sheet paper and 13 x 44" on roll paper. So why did I buy another one? Because this printer has one major design flaw, and the most obvious solution is to use two, not just one. There is only one slot for black ink, and you must choose between Matte Black and Photo Black depending on the media you're printing on. You can print on either matte or glossy media, but first you have to swap out the black ink cartridge and install the other one. This process is overly complex to carry out, and wastes LOTS of black in in the process. The ink has to be purged out and replaced by the incoming ink. Worse, the printer driver will NOT let you print if the ink and media are mismatched. If you print lots on both matte and glossy media, your black ink costs will skyrocket. So I use two R2880's, one for glossy media only and the other for matte medai only, so there is no wasted ink due to swapping out the black cartridges. Another benefit is that you have a backup printer in case one fails (this hasn't happened to me). I would have given the R2880 five stars if it didn't require swapping out the black ink cartridges.

The R2880 Printer

By Richard from Asheville NC on 02/01/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the R2880 as a replacement for another brand. I did extensive research and kept coming back to the R2880. When it arrived I was pleased at the ease of installation and the documentation. The fact that it came with 9 ink cartridges caused some apprehension but I considered that a trade-off given the versatility of the printer. I did my first run and the picures were absolutely beautiful. The R2880 is a great product.

excellent printer -magnificent color rendering

By debthegold from ny, ny on 01/29/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a wonderful printer whose output is superb. Like every other review I've read my 'cons' would match those on the small ink cartridges, the costs of ink and having to swap matte and photo black when using different papers. I also think the documentation could be more explicit about which papers go in what feed. Manual Roll (for single sheet fed art paper was very confusing to me. Perhaps 'back sheet feed, single sheet' would have been more obvious. (for me) other than that, great, great results for the happy consumer and amateur photographer. One more thing - the measure of any product is the support of the company behind it. On the two occasions I had to call support, they were EXCELLENT. That, to me makes a company and its products easy to recommend. Highly recommend Epson R2880

I have had this printer for 1 year already and I'm still loving it. I thought I should write a second review now that I have really had time to put it through it's paces. I have printed on everything from 5x7 - 13x19 and direct to CD/DVD and it continues to impress. If you are not getting the results you expect with this printer, it's probably your monitor more than anything. I calibrate my 24" iMac every couple of weeks and set up my own icc profile for each paper type using a ColorMunki Photo spectrophotometer and my prints look just like what I see on screen in Aperture 3.0. Recently, I printed my Christmas cards and also over 120 of my best photos on Red River Paper's 7"x10" (5x7) Greeting Card stock. A mix of B&W and Color prints on four different types of Red River card stock. No problem at all getting the R2880 to handle the custom 7"x10" paper size. The cards looked fantastic. Very professional. I have also made my own card stock using Epson, Ilford, and Hahnemhule papers. They look great, but that's too much work for me. I'm still looking forward to trying out the roll paper feature and also printing on canvas. I have had the opportunity to call Epson's Customer Service number for assistance with another printer (Artisan 810) and they have been excellent in helping me troubleshoot some issues that all turned out to be "user error". I wouldn't hesitate contacting them again if needed, but I have learned to read the manual carefully, and follow the steps exactly, and haven't had any other issues since.

Epson Stylus Photo R2880

By Vicky from Sacramento, CA on 12/29/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 wide format printer for my photography work. I used it for the first time last night and the photographs turned out fantastic. The instructions for use were easy to understand, and I was able to set up the printing job within a reasonable amount of time. I became aware of Epson Printers since the school I attend uses Epson Wide Format printers for their photo lab work. The printers are the "work horses" for several classes in digital photography. I chose Epson because I wanted a dependable printer along with professional results in printing.

Great

By Anonymous from Los Angeles, CA on 12/21/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Mindlessly easy to install and start printing although I wish they had included a USB cable in the package. Excellent quality prints in both color and black and white, very crisp up to the largest size I've tried so far - 11x14 - reasonably fast. Wish ink cartridges were larger, but they're very satisfactory. I'm pleased.

Everything has worked perfectly so far. Quiet and fast. I did not realize, though, that there was no gloss optimizer like my old and beloved R800 had. I assume there is an explanation or possibly a glossier paper than the standard gloss paper I am using. Other than that one fine point, it is a very impressive performer!

2880 printer

By Buddy from Fort Collins, CO 80526 on 12/17/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have bought a600, still have a 595 and now the 2880. The machine is straight forward to set up and run. The printer gave a whole new color and black and white print. To campare it with the 595 print show cased the upgrade. This machine will also get a good work out with my wife and daughter and their various book scrapping. The new ink and clarity in details make it well worth the change.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the R2880 just under a week ago and have already put it to the test. The photo shop where I've been having my printing done is extremely busy and it just made sense to print for myself. I have done about ten 13 x 19 prints and a few smaller ones as well and the quality is excellent. The color quality is very good. The convenience of having this in my own office gives me the ability to print immediately and offer quicker service to customers.

Recommend, but......

By Wes from Milford, OH on 12/15/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I haven't had my refurbished printer for very long. It replaced a 1270, which did a good job until if finally died. The 2880 makes beautiful, sharp prints. I downloaded the additional color profiles to use with it. However, my local Office Depot did not carry ink for this particular model, though I could order it from them online. When I ordered from Epson, one of the colors was not listed. This makes me a little nervous. I also don't have a feel yet for how rapidly this printer eats ink. The jury is out on that. Otherwise, so far, so good.

I'm doing Santa photos at the mall and I am using the printer to print all my 8x10's. I print about 20 8x10's a day and so far it is doing really well. The only downside is that after changing the ink out it takes a few minutes before I can print the next image. Good color and great versatility. I plan to print 12" x 12" canvas squares with it later. It would be better if it had bigger ink cartridges.

Epson R2880 Simplified

By We Who Watch from Houston, TX on 12/05/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

If I had but one classification for this printer, it would be "Prosumer," better than standard consumer fare, but not quite professional. The Epson R2880 can print from 4 x 6 to 13 x 19" photos. It can do up to 13 x 44" banners. All these things it does easily and quietly with the consummate excellent quality which Epson has become famous for. Rather than dye ink which lower end printers use, this bad boy uses pigment ink which is even suitable for high quality media such as canvas, vellum, or even poster board up to 1.3mm thick. It will print labels directly upon a printable dvd or cd. The R2880 is extremely modular and surprisingly compact for a printer with so very many capabilities. Paper handling is quite simple. Plain, matte, and photo papers load at the back of the printer. Thick media such as poster board or compact disks load at the front. All media is loaded with printable side up. There are two USB ports in the back of the printer. It can be connected directly to a computer or may act as a network printer with the aid of a USB print server. There are two downsides to this printer. Pigment ink is more expensive than dye inks. The other downside is you are supplied with 9 ink cartridge for 8 ink feed slots, therefor you must decide between photo black or matte black depending on media to be printed. Any time you change between these inks you will suffer some ink loss due to line flushing. Minor issues, but you may want to consider them. Four stars out of five is my rating. Very good. Just a smidgen from great!

I just received my R2880 and in the process of installing the system, I ran into problems. Naturally, I was chomping at the bit to print with my new Epson, having graduated from an R340. Disappointed on the first day, I contacted Epson Email Support and got a speedy response from Jasper R. The first pass did not resolve my problems and I emailed further details. Just as quick I received another response, with Solution A, Aternate Solution B and then even a Solution C. Happily, the Solution A did the trick. Hats off to Epson for truly fast and effective troubleshooting support, with a special kudo for Jasper R. I feel sure that the best is yet to come with my R2880.

Oh my god, I'm in love!

By NorthshoreHermit from Northshore, MA on 12/01/2010

This makes my 4th Epson printer. I have a 1280 which I used for years until I bought an R1800, only to be terribly disappointed in the horrible black and whites (colors are outstanding, tho.) I also have a Workforce 600 (for wireless office printing and faxing), and now I have this R2880. I just tested it with a black & white and a color print. I did two tests each. The first print I let the printer manage the color. The second I let photoshop manage it with an ICC profile and a newly-calibrated monitor. I am stunned. Really stunned. The difference between printer managing the color and photoshop managing color was pretty minimal. Neither were really off. But the quality of the prints are just phenomenal. I recently printed one of these test prints w/my R1800, and I gotta tell you, there's a massive improvement in the 2880. The quality in the details is so different. I am blown away. If you're a professional photographer or even just an amateur who cares about prints (or sells them) do not hesitate to buy this printer. I also got it with a $300 rebate (thanks Epson!) and sold some old photo equipment online to make up the difference so my net cost = ZERO. Can't argue with free, right?

r2880 review

By teddy from new york, ny on 11/26/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The printer prints well, and that is most important, however there is a basic design flaw that makes it inconvenient and wasteful. The necessity of changing black ink cartridges depending upon the paper you are using is archaic. In addition if the ink in the cartridge is low, it msut be discarded and cannot be saved. What a waste of expensive ink. There is also a real possibility that the saved ink will clog if not properly stored, and keep soap handy to wash your ink-stained hands.

The paper roll feeder is very difficult to use. The printer does not recognize the roll paper media easily - and when it does - it feeds about 1m through the rollers before it stops. Also no software was provided with my machine - i had to download drivers off the internet. Manual is also not very helpful. You need to swop out black cartriges on the machine depending on what media you are using - only problem is the printer wont recognise the new cartidge unless you reboot your computer/printer several times - uuughhhh!!!

Great Printer!

By Armin from New England on 11/21/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am always pleased at prints made with this printer. Color prints are accurate and have good archival properties. Black and white prints are astonishingly good with rich blacks and clean whites. Prints made on good papers are a joy to behold. Downsides, I sometimes wish it were able to take 17 inch wide papers, but I don't print big that often, so it's not a big issue for me. The other downside is the cost of the ink. It ain't cheap, but it still beats what photo finishers used to charge. I'd be tempted by the new 3880, but the ink cost is the same. Otherwise I couldn't be happier with this printer.

no software

By dlane from Goldn, Colorado on 11/10/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I opened the box and started going through everything. I am going to use this printer to print my portfolio. I have always stayed away from printers because I would hear that they will clog from no use. With the recent rebates and some indication that the clogging issue has been addressed ( not cured) I made the purchase of the R2880. I have been aware that it is important to let the printer no what paper is being used. If you do not the quality and control you have will suffer. The last thing I needed to do was load my software. I did not remember seeing a DVD or CD when I unpacked the printer. I was concerned with the inks and loading the right black ( wish both blacks could be loaded and just switch between them). I also notice I was not given a USB cable which I figured could be normal and I have a bunch of those. I looked on the box to double check what I should have received and it say CD-ROM containing drivers and software ( Windows and MacIntosh). I do not have a CD-ROM. I can't believe it. SO I go to the website and find the driver downloads. I download a driver but I still can not find the supposed "Properties" area where I am supposed to enter the type of paper I am printing on. I did make a few 5x7 glossy prints to test. I printed from photoshop, but now I am on hold in regards to printing my portfolio until I resolve this issue. My Portfolio is what sells my services and I need the prints to be as good as they can be. If I can not resolve this issue in a reasonable time period I will return the printer and hire someone to print my portfolio. Maybe thats what I should have done in the first place!!

good product

By DJohns from Houston, TX on 10/11/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Overall this printer does exactly what I expected it to do. The colors are fantastic. I just think the ink cartridge holder should contain an extra slot so you can install both the matte and photo black at the same time. Epson should have the printer defaut to which black ink (matte or photo) type to use when you chose your paper setting instead of having to change out the black ink depending on the paper type you are using. I feel like that is wasting ink because the ink has to "prime" each time you change the cartridge. This takes up too much time and wastes ink. Other than that I am very satisfied with the printer.

I moved up from the Epson 1400 to this printer and can't believe the difference. Finally I can print black and white! The black and whites are perfectly neutral, and the shadow areas and blacks in the color prints are finally without color cast. All prints on all of my different papers are 10x better with this printer. Lastly, still having the DVD/CD printer is vital, glad to have it so I can sell the 1400. Can't recommend this printer enough and I've only had it for two days!

PDG, I like it!

By Chas from Los Angeles on 08/28/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Overall and so far I think the R2880 outstanding. (Why Epson doesn't class it as one of their professional imaging printers beats me. I think it's professional"at a bargain price.) I'm most struck by the smoothness of operation, which I hope continues. I've mostly been using the rear-attaching, manual sheet feeder for heavier fiber papers and find that that works very well. I've not tried roll paper nor the front loader for really heavy stuff, but assume those will work as well. Once figured out, menu selections for Mac are adequate for anyone as the driver is plenty adequate"a big step up for this user. The printer has a very solid feel to it that I like a lot. Appearance is great and materials used in manufacturing the printer seem very sturdy, such that I think it will last awhile. Durability matters, though I'm not one to print up a storm. I might go weeks without using it, which is why the smaller cartridges actually work better for me"ink doesn't get too old sitting for too long in larger cartridges like the ones Epson makes for its higher-end, higher-volume, larger-paper printers. (Not that I wouldn't like to have one of those; I'm a believer in ink-jet technology and especially would enjoy the larger paper-size capacity.) I'm not tech nut and so can't get too much into assessing Epson's print-head technology per se, except to note it works very well judging by print out, which is the entire point of the exercise. I do very much like the pigment-based ink set over the dye-based set for the lower-end Epson I still use from time to time to print documents and the like. What metamerism? Which I was led to worry about before I purchased this printer. I've not noticed anything worth noticing (see below, however) and am happy to be using what I suspect are going to be longer-lasting inks on a more interesting variety of papers of fiber-based papers. The finish on a few papers"ranging from Epson's Exhibition Fiber Base and Velvet Fine Art to Canson and Hahnemuhle, thus far"has proven beautiful in every instance, even using so-called canned profiles, which do well enough, though some are better than others. (Once I decide on a couple papers to use, I might have profiles made for those to use with my printer. And I can recommend both Epson papers just mentioned, which are as good or better than the other brands that have been around from 200 to 400 years. That's not bad. The Velvet is a little weird at first but grows on one pretty fast. It's got a great matte finish especially in combination with the R2880, I think. The EFB has a terrific semi-gloss surface not too glossy but glossier than the other brands mentioned. Don't bother with Canson's Platine since it's green to start with. Epson's is a far cleaner white.) I tried out the Advanced Black & White feature that is supplied with the printer's driver (for Mac Snow Leopard too) and found I liked the result. I used it with a fine-line and lightly shaded charcoal drawing I scanned in at high resolution and the print turned out very well with outstanding detail, albeit on a very nice Hahnemuhle paper. But that's good; a good printer ought be capable with other brands of paper. Now, having largely raved here, a couple caveats: The first very minor, but mentionable for any who really, really doesn't want to have to switch out black cartridges. For those who understand the need to do so, just live with it. (The process is automated in higher-end printers, but then one pays for that too.) The second is what I notice to be a fairly heavy lay-down of black ink in general. Noticeable, obviously, more so in color work. With some darker more grayed color there's a slight tendency to muddiness. Some might be due to my own tendency to use of such colors that are not so evident on a back-lit screen; although, workflow here is color managed from screen to print. Alas, there's no such thing as a perfect match. I'm hoping I might somehow be able to get rid of any tendency to muddiness by having profiles made ond/or by somehow adjusting black ink flow, if the latter can be done. (I think it can but haven't attempted it.) Maybe metamerism is a factor here when pigment is compared to dye. I'd used only dye prior to purchase of this printer and dark-toned grays seem a little cleaner when the ink is dye-base. That might stand to reason. On the other hand, I'm not sure dye isn't far more prone to result in banding, bearing in mind my previous printer is a lot more lower-end with only four heads. Banding in dark grays was more or less a constant problem on glossy paper. I've not noticed banding like that so far on the R2880, and am plenty grateful for that! But true, I've not yet attempted to print a large graded (from very dark to very light) area"got out of the habit of incorporating such gradients after so much difficulty printing them previously. I don't usually print photos strictly speaking, as most of my work is more painting than photography, even if a photo serves as the base. By the way, and sorta for the same reason, I can recommend this printer to painters out there maybe more used to using pigments in more direct fashion. Some heaviness is desirable, so I've slightly mixed feelings about all that. I've not down-graded the printer for these either, relatively minor reason. I'm really quite happy with the printer's performance and expect I'll be able to figure out more as I go along. Epson's tech support is quite good in a large industry not known for outstanding tech support. I can usually count on techs for support in timely fashion and with workable answers, I've noticed, even when I get temperamental, which has been known to happen. (I thank techs publicly here for their patience and assistance in the past.) I'm as fussy as they come concerning results, wanting all that can be had for the money spent on a printer. The R2880 lives up to Epson's rep in delivering as fine a print as one could want or need"probably from any printer, including Epson's own higher-end models. That's PDG. For any having doubts as to whether or not to purchase, don't and just buy it because you'll not likely find better or maybe not even so good at two or three times the price.

First Class Dynamite Printer

By ProfessorK from Wrentham Massachusetts on 08/17/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The R2880 provides a clarity of color and definition that is far superior to my R2400 which was just replaced with the R2880. In addition the ability to easily use either Matte Black or Photo Black is a printing advantage for Letters and Notes. In order to see a difference between prints made before the 2880, I have re- printed some of my favorite prints for comparison and find that the 2880 certainly has a remarkable vividness and sharpness than do my earlier prints.

Pretty well is the tops for quality

By Trainman1954 from Jasper, IN on 04/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Although I am a bit disappointed on the quantity of ink this printer uses, (and the cartridges are a bit smaller than the printer I had before), the quality of the prints are excellent. It is a bit slower through the printing process for me, but well worth the wait. There seems to be a longer pause from when you click on the PRINT bar, until it begins to print. As I said before...the only gripes I have, is the inks are about 12% less for the 7 at a time you must use, and are a bit pricy.

Bottom Line:

Bought one a month ago, and have had absolutely no problems. Output is really excellent. It might be the best work I've produced ever, and is easily the best since I switched to digital. I have used it in color and B&W, and using a calibrated monitor and good color management my color, tonal range, shadow detail and depth, are all exactly what I expect. It handles all the different papers I have so far used - glossy, lustre, matte, RC, fiber - no scratches, no smears, just the way I want it. If you want your work to go to the next level, with the control you want, get this printer.

Excellent Photo Printer For The Money

By Retsof22 from Las Vegas, NV on 03/16/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this printer in mid January 2010 and have been putting it through it's paces. I am involved in a camera club that has monthly competitions and I wanted to be able to enter some of my work. Most of my prints are 11 x 14 and are looking better than I thought possible from a home printer. Better in fact than any prints I have ever gotten back from a print service. Since getting this printer, I have added a ColorMunki spectrophotometer to my system which I use to calibrate my Monitor, the R2880, and also to create a custom icc profile for each paper type that I use. If your prints are not looking exactly like the images you see on your monitor, I would also recommend the ColorMunki Photo. it was very easy to learn and does exactly what it is supposed to do. I love that I have total control over the look of my prints. I can't say enough about the quality of the Epson R2880 and the Epson Ultrapremium Luster Paper. Premium Glossy looks great too. I have also had fantastic results with Ilford Gold Fibre Silk paper and Hahnemuhle Fine Art Glossy Pearl. I haven't gotten around to printing on the Epson Matte paper or Canvas Roll Paper, though I have both and plan to experiment as soon as it is time to replace my Photo Black Ink (I'm on my second cartridge of most colors). Switching the Photo Black and Matte Black ink cartridges isn't a big deal to me. I started off with the Photo Black which was what I needed for the first few boxes of paper that I purchased. I'm also looking forward to printing a panorama at 13" x 44" when I feel I have a photo that is worthy. It's nice to know that I have that capability, even if I rarely print larger than 11" x 14". When I was doing my research prior to making this purchance I found that every printer has it's limitations. The "C" Brand doesn't print on roll paper, so that was a major factor in why I chose this printer. Also, the quality of the B&W prints. I can't imagine a printer that could be noticably better than the R2880 at B&W printing. I just got my rebate check in the mail today and I'm thinking about using it for some papers that I haven't tried yet. :-)

Great large format Printer

By TimothyB from Atlanta, GA on 03/01/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a still life photographer, and I couldn't be happier with the results from this printer. It is my first large format printer, and I am always amazed at the printouts as far as colour and density. One hint, you must keep your driver updated and current, especially on a Mac. Again, this printer is great for the professional photographer.

Really Great Investment.

The set up was very easy by the Easy Set up process. I was looking at the R1900 at first but thought that the extra money for this model would be a better investment. After 4 weeks of heavy use and ordering more Matte Black - I'm impressed with the results. The ink is smaller than my old Epson 2200 and I wished they we're the same size - because the Black Matte is used up twice as fast as the rest of the ink. So I suggest oredering at least 3 extra with your intial order Since my hobby is "music" and I design my cd's and the Jewel Case with the software from Corel Draw X4 (I started with Corel 4 many years ago). I wanted to get away from the Labels that stick on and print directly on the cd. First - it printed the CD's perfectly and the color was SUPER when I used the Premium setting for the CD in the print setup of the CD software, rather than the default setting. Since I use my own art work, the software is easy to use to bring it in and if the center hole is 12mm or needs to be Custom made, it is not that hard to comprehind. You must buy "printable" cd's and they come in Matte, Glossy and White finish. The Matte is really the best for me. The key to use this is to follow the instructions and you'll have little or no problems. As they say "Read The Instructions First" It looks like I bought the CD from the store. I highly recommend this great printer. It does Color printing and Black and White extremly well also.

Good Purchase But Some Dissappointment

By trinigirl from Columbia, MD on 05/07/2009

Bottom Line:

I love this printer - the print quality. But like some of the previous reviewers, I too have had problems with heaver paper and the manual tray. My first try with the heavy paper was a success, but when I tried it again, I kept getting error messages. I still do not regret purchasing this printer; it is fast and the colors are awesome! In addition, I can now print on glossy paper. My previous printer was a R2200 which did not allow me to print on glossy (even though it is not my favorite paper). I will keep trying with the various papers hopefully I will figure out the problem.

Spectacular

By Stewart from Berryville, VA on 05/01/2009

While I can't speak to product reliability (I've had it for a day and run off three prints!), I am simply stunned by the print quality. I ran off three different prints on Epson A3 (11.7 x 16.6 in) Premium Luster paper and am just blown away (the paper, by the way, is gorgeous). My monitor is calibrated with a Spyder3 and, using the downloaded ICC profiles from Epson, the photos are dead-on printed in Photoshop CS4. Colors are perfect. The one B&W print is magnificent. Not a single glitch getting it up and running and I'll be able to speak about reliability soon...I will be printing A LOT!

Re: Epson Stylus Photo R2880 Printer. The Epson Stylus Photo R2880 printer is a sweet machine. From start up to printing the quick start guide was clear and concise with a step by step approach that did not leave this novice confused. Frankly, what has kept me from printing photos in the past has been a fear of technical language beyond my vocabulary. But the instructions given here left nothing to chance or misunderstanding. Loading the ink, the paper, connecting to my MacBook Pro and printing the first photos was easy and did not take a lot of time. From box to print took about 45 minutes and that was after checking everything twice. So far, color family photos, a couple of scenics and several black and white photos have gone through the machine with fantastic results. The color on the print very well matches what I see on the screen. And black and white photos come out even better. They are fantastic. After showing my wife the same photo in color and black and white, she preferred the black and white, but it was a hard choice for her to make. I am only beginning to explore the capabilities of this printer and I know that in the hands of someone more experienced this machine would put out awesome photographs. I would highly recommend the Epson Stylus R2880 to anyone who wishes to have more control over their printing. Its ease of use and quality photos will spoil even the most critical user.

amazing color and fidelity

By Anonymous from Miami, FL on 01/12/2009

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just made my first few prints with the Epson 2880 - the sharpness and color saturation is quite amazing. I have been printing with Epson printers for better than twelve years and this printer is the fastest, sharpest and richest color printer I have seen. Printing in 16 bit color mode the Epson profiles for Premium Lustre paper is remarkably accurate " no need for a custom calibrator to create a specific profile. The printers sharpness is what really makes this printer a bargain. For prints up to 13 x 19 you can make photographic prints that will rival the best service bureau. In Black and White Advanced mode the printers ability to render an accurate and extremely smooth tonality will make this a wonderful printer for those who still prefer the classical esthetic of B&W.

Santa Came Early!

By Shooter from SF on 12/13/2008

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review and post it online. I just received my Epson R2880 and I cannot say enough good things about it. The set up was a breeze! I followed the directions in the quick start guide, installed the drivers from the CD enclosed with the printer and went to Epson's site to get the latest ICC profiles. Within thirty minutes I had my first print in hand. WOW! Simply outstanding! Epsons claim that the R2880 provides "Exhibition Quality Prints" is spot on in my book. The funny thing is, I have a brand new color printer, and the first print I made was black and white. It brought me back to being a kid in the darkroom, when I made my first black and white print. (The ones that have had the experience of seeing a print come to life in developer for the first time, know what I'm talking about). Well, it was just like that experience with my new Epson R2880. The bad thing about that, is now I want to run out and buy a scanner for all those black and white negatives that I have tucked away in the archive. Most likely an Epson V750. The other thing I like about this printer is the ability to use the roll paper attachment that came in the box with the printer. I installed it just after pulling the printer out of the box. Now, I can print either a 13" x 44" or 8.5" x 44" for either panoramic or gang printing. In addition, you have the option to print 13" x 19" on 1.3mm thick media and Canvas. I cannot wait to play with that. What about color prints? Thanks for asking. The palette of colors seems to be real broad. The skin tones seem to be spot on and the bright colorful images simply popped! Hey, after all you have 8 cartridges of Epsons UltraChrome K3 ink going to that media. That brings me to the ink issue you might have read about in other reviews. All I can say is you get what you pay for! The Epson R2880 is worth it for the results you will have for a lifetime. The foot print is not small, but you sure do get a lot packed in to its 24.3" (W) x 31.4" (D) x 16.3" (H) size. I am hooked on this Epson R2880 printer. So much so, I signed up for an upcoming Epson Print Academy to get that much more out of my Epson R2880. Just go get one and you will see what I mean. Enjoy the prints of a lifetime!

Epson R2880, Excellent prints

By Tana from Louisiana on 12/10/2008

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Epson Stylus R2880 produces excellent prints. The archival quality is important to me, and the colors are brilliant. Most prints came out virtually the same as my monitor; every so often I have to tweak a file. I made no adjustments to get perfect black and white prints with no color casts; rich blacks and a nice tonal range. It prints beautiful portraits. If this will be your home computer, make sure you have a decent-sized place to set it up. Its very sleek looking and closes up to keep dust out. Its about 2 ft wide, but is compact for a printer that produces up to 13 x 19 prints. The set up was easy, and its easy to use. Make sure you read all of the directions. Its sensitive to each kind of paper and where its loaded. Im working on Windows Vista. I just checked for the latest drivers. Also, it doesnt come with a printer cable, so purchase one separately if you dont have an extra. I use the printer for color proofing book and poster designs and making high-quality prints. To get the promise of quality, only Epson products should be used which means no bargain shopping. I like the Ultra Premium Photo Luster paper. Also the difference in using the quality versus max quality print settings is hardly noticeable if you want to save ink. However, I will always use max quality for my final product. Ive only printed on 8 1/2 x 11 so far, but Im looking forward to printing on roll and larger paper. I cant wait to try out some of the features such as printing images on my DVDs. It will make my home video productions look more professional to send to family.

Extremely Impressed with the Speed and Quality

By Anonymous from New York, NY on 12/09/2008

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

"I have been a professional photographer for little over a year now. My first experience into the world of inkjet printing involved the Epson 2200. It was an overall good experience but it left me always wanting more out of the quality of my black and whites and the efficiency of my printing. So far, I have been very pleased with the R2880. My b/w photos have drastically increased in image quality and tonal range (grey ink) and the speed of the printing is amazing.(less than a minute for a 5x7) I was a little skeptical of the cd/dvd printing capabilities and how much of a process it would entail. It's actually very painless with the included software I feel much better about the presentation of my discs. I'm looking forward to experimenting with different papers and analyzing how much more efficient this inkjet can be."

Quality Images, Small Ink Cartridges

By ternorm from Marfa, Texas on 09/28/2008

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the R2880 to replace my SP2200. I like the 2880's compact style that allows it to fold up for better dust protection. I like the added single sheet feeder that fits behind the regular sheet feed. This allows loading fine art or other thicker media that on the 2200 had to be loaded from the rear. Now I don't have to turn my printer around to feed this media. I did have a problem feeding at first since you have to feed it just right to allow the printer to "grab" the paper. The page set up is totally different than the 2200 and takes some getting acquainted with. Compared to the 2200, the image quality is no comparison. My photos look better, especially the B&W. With the 2200, the metamerism was so bad I was having to resort to black ink only mode. The R2880 produces outstanding, true black and white prints that look good in the shadows and highlights. I can't detect any metamerism in the B&W images but true black, whites and grays. Complaints about the 2880 include the ink cartridges are smaller than the 2200 (that is a physical measurement and I couldn't find the exact ml description of the two brands to see what the ml size for the two are). You still can't load both photo and matte blacks together thus causing one to use more ink during the charging process when you trade them out. With the 2200, I was able to print approximately 100 images at 1440 before changing the photo black. I just purchased the R2880 and after only 5, 8 x 10 prints of color and black and white for tests at 1440x1440, I have used almost half of the photo black. I passed on the 2400 hoping after the 3800 was released, the next model to replace the 2400 would have features such as a slightly larger ink cartridges and the ability to load both photo and matte inks together. I felt let down that neither of these came to pass. I don't know what the difference between the R2800 and 2400 are (besides the new vivid magenta ink) since I have never used the 2400. But if there is not much of a change, one might think about it well before going to the 2800 and hoping that the next release will have these changes I hoped for with this model (If that is an issue with you). If you are a 2200 user, I would definetly make the switch because the image quality is of far better quality, and the black and whites will amaze you. From my brief experience with the R2880, it appears it is going to be a trade off of great, quality prints, for high ink use and expense. That is my initial impression from the few test prints. Time will tell.

Clumsy

By gordon304 from Chicago on 09/27/2008

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The Stylus Photo R2800 is my fourth Epson printer so I expected it to be as good if not better than the others. Although the prints so far have been good color, my printing options are limited. After several reviews of the manual, following instructions carefully, correct ink, media selection, etc, my attempts to print from any but the top feeder result in error messages so I can only access a couple of paper types and print speeds. Wrestling with 3 overly sensitive feeding trays with different instructions is awkward and frustrating particularly when they don't work. Why so many feeders for generally the same media? My old 2200 worked fine with one sheet feeder for all. I hope an Epson tech can get me through this or it's going back to the store.

Worthy Successor to Trusty 2200

By photoarch from Idaho on 07/31/2008

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wonderful color. More detail in shadows than 2200. Improved gradation of tone. Nice to have real b&w printing capability. One caveat, the "pro" level printers have user changeable ink tanks to capture the ink "spit" in the process of cleaning and changing blacks. I'm guessing the 2880 requires an Epson repair shop and $200 to get the ink capture mechanism replaced as my 2200 would have had I not opted to upgrade. The "consumer" machines should also have user changeable tanks.
