Constantly have to clean print heads

By S from New York, NY, USA on 03/17/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've had this printer for about a year now. I print a couple times a week and I've noticed that every time I have I print I have to clean the print heads and do all kinds of maintenance steps in order to get a decent print with accurate colors. Pretty inconvenient and annoying. I will be buying a new printer soon.

By Russ from Columbia City, Indiana on 01/15/2015

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I think your ink is overpriced for the usage. Also, changing paper all the time is a pain with only one feed. All too often its prints streaks across a color print and the print heads need to be cleaned. The print quality is very good.

Couldn't live without it

By Zoziee from Los Angeles, CA on 12/18/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Have owned Epson printers for many years and have been only disappointed with one (the XP 850, but have already reviewed it earlier) Was willing to try Epson again, after I threw out the 850, because all of their other printers had been excellent. Chose the Artisan 50 because I wanted a dedicted printer just for my photography and it provides me with professional looking work that I can be proud of. The colors are vibrant and when used with Epson paper dry instantly and don't seem to fade at all. I also like the straight feed in back because it allows me to print on the backs of my greeting cards without bending or tearing them. I hope that they will continue to produce similar models for many years to come.

Hit and miss

By Butch from Elma WA on 12/12/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Bought the Artisan 50 primarily for its CD/DVD direct printing capabilities. This is where the hit or miss comes in you are not always guaranteed to get a good copy every time, there have been some good, some alright, and still some that are totally messed up. Being that you are printing directly to the disc this can be a costly problem. Also the printer seems to go through a lot of ink, printed about ten discs and two of the ink cartridges were near empty. Of the 10 printed 2 were good, 4 were alright, 2 were at least legible, and 2 were coasters. I also tried to print to CD/DVD labels not much better results there. The Print quality in the normal function is acceptable, but I have seen better on printers that cost a lot less and are a lot cheaper to maintain.

Great Printer

By Drapery Lady from Boston, MA on 11/20/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer does a terrific job with photos. I'm running my Epson Workforce 520 side by side with this one until the ink runs out then I'll probably use the Artisan 50 for everything. Just wish it had scanning capabilities, but then it probably wouldn't have the same quality for photos. Love it and definitely recommend it for anyone printing photos.

This is for a Artisan 837 which was not in the menu. After printing 6 discs the heads cloged, and the head cleaning feature did not work. This is my 3 Epson printer and gee, I wish I had #1 back.

By Arcy from Wyoming on 08/30/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought my first Artisan 50 Epson printer almost five years ago. It gave me consistently photos the entire time. When it was worn out, I replaced it with an identical machine. I am impressed that Epson continues to produce this reliable printer for that long a time. I expect this new machine to perform as well as the one it replaces.

If It's Epson, It has To Be Good!

By LarryZ from Green Bay, WI, USA on 08/26/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My recently purchased Epson Artisan 50 is still in the box, but being an Epson, I have total confidence that I have purchased the best. Having been a digital photographer for many years, I have owned printers from other manufacturers. My Epson printers have always delivered the very best images. There is nothing like experience.

New Printer

By FrankM from Charlotte, NC on 08/21/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been looking for a replacement for an older photoprinter to print greeting cards that my wife paints and I shoot then print on medium weight card stock. I do this as well as print photos. The A50 is the answer and then some. The straight paper path permits feeding card stock easily and the print quality is excellent.I went through two other printers before picking the right one. Thanks Epson!

Completed but Delivers

By JANAJ22 from Kauai HI on 08/13/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've had my Ep Artisan 50 for 3.5 years now. I love the DVD/CD printing capability that delivers a pretty good professional like label for my wedding customers. What I find vexing, is the fickleness of operations. Once you get it set up, the printer is steady and reliable. If it hiccups, loses power or needs a new cartridge, then it could be down for hours and could require a few calls to Epson tech support. The tech support are great, but the process is tedious. But, all that said, it's only about 1x a year so for 3.5 years, dozens and dozens of DVD labels of success printed in the Epson Label software, I love this little hummer of a printer. My customers like seeing their wedding photos on their wedding videos. I recommend it for DVD/CD printing. I guess it does well on paper, I just don't use it for paper.

My new Epson Artison 50 Printer

By Georgia O. from NC on 08/12/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've only had it a week or so and haven't had the time to play with it that I would like. Initial attempts to print brought mixed results. Some images were perfect others that were from my files were dreadful with harsh overdone chroma. I'm told I can call the tech to get the printer more compatible to my computer colorwise. I hope that is true. Dread explaining it to the tech -- that's usually a pain.

best Picture prints for the money

By Kenny from Somerset, NJ on 07/28/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

There are a lot of printers out there that print good pictures. Some of these printers print great pictures but they cost a lot of money. This printer gets great professional quality prints for the fraction of the cost of the other printers. Very vivid colors, very clean prints. If you outgrow this printer, then you'll be ready to jump into the R series of Epson printers.

Good basic printer

By Al from Corvallis, OR on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer performed very well for me. The only problem happened when it was idle for an extended period (about 2 months) and the ink cartridges were left in it. Thr result was a permanent damage-color that couldn't be erased. I now have an Epson XP-810 that has lots of functions and is a good replacement.

It's easy to get lost in the advance of technology

By Pete from Hampton, Connecticut on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

When I first purchased my Epson Artisan 50 Inkjet Printer, it seemed to do a reasonably good job, but by no means could it produce the quality images I was able to get with my old and burnt out Epson Stylus Photo R800. The R800 produced consistently great color renditions of what I wanted in my prints. On the other hand, the Artisan 50 worked really well for my custom greeting cards. Other than that, I could never get any Epson paper, matte or glossy, to reproduce good color. Far too often my prints looked too dark and muddy with the Artisan 50. Prior to using any printer, I calibrate my monitor and use that profile in Adobe Photoshop and also use that profile for my printers. Unfortunately, these days, not much in the ways of printers can match what I was able to get out of older printers. What I'm seeing is that there is always a race to manufacture or produce new products and applications, but hardly ever do they work well together. I believe that everyone needs to be on the same page when it comes to creating an app to work properly with new products like printers. In the past, backwards compatibility went a long ways. Today, one is lucky to find anything that works backwards compatible for more than a couple years. With that said, where is the incentive to want to purchase new products?

Impressive

By Vector Art from Phoenix, AZ. on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this printer for outputting my graphic design, school assignments. Once I figured out the proper print settings, the colors were a perfect match to my monitor. Even the smallest details were crisp. Even people in the print business ask me where I got my portfolio printed. I tell them I did it at home on my little printer. They're impressed.

All purpose printer

By VIC10X from Seattle on 07/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Epson Artisan 50 does it all and does it well. So far it also seems easy on the ink. For my own uses however, it is 1 of only a few inkjet printers (all Epson) which can close the paper guides down to 2 inches and feed the cards I print (2x3 1/2 inches). I also print a lot of 110lb card stock. this printer has the fairly straight throught paper track that allows the heavy paper to print without problems. All in all, this is one of the best Epsons to date.

Good one!

By gofast32 from San Luis Obispo, CA. on 05/04/2014

Bottom Line:

Have had 4 Epson's prior to this (after using a brand X). The Epson's are awesome for my photography printing, most of which are 8-1/2 x 11. This time I was apprehensive when my R380 gave up the ghost (as all of my Epson's have, hit a point and that's it) that the Artisan 50 would be the same quality in printing detailed photographs...well, rest easy, this printer does it all, I will buy a backup now, in case Epson ceases production...quality, cost, quick delivery...what more can you ask for...

Good and Bad

By Keith from Rhode Island on 04/23/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have had my Epson Artisan 50 for four years and it still functions, barely. It has done well in printing DVD labels for me (which is what I primarily use it for). It loves to waste ink every time it starts, and it often has errors and so has to be restarted - and then wastes more ink. Last year the paper feed mechanism died. I took it for repairs but they couldn't fix it so I can't load paper anymore. Also the colors are no longer accurate even with new ink cartridges. I would not buy this model again, except I can't find another reasonably priced printer that prints inkjet DVD labels.

Clogged Ink Tanks

By Ryan from Florida on 03/23/2014

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have had two of these printers now. It's not a matter of if but when will the ink tanks become clogged. Because of the built in printhead (which makes fantastic beautiful highly detailed printing available), if the printer is not used consistently, the ink tanks will become clogged and the printer will not be able to be used. On my first printer, the ink tanks become clogged after a month business trip where the printer was not in use. The second printer became clogged for not apparent reason. Epsoin support will replace the printer, but the hassle is not worth the purchase. The actual quality of the printer and the prints are fantastic.

By Mr Bill from Fort Worth, Texas on 03/15/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Through the years I have used only Epson printers, upgrading as newer advances and added ease of use has been presented. The Artisan 50 is my latest printer. I have used it with great satisfaction. Epson is the only printer I have found that enables me to print both the covers and discs of the media that I make for the MC I ride with (Bikers For Christ). I document all our functions and make them available to our members. The quality I get from my Artisan 50 gives a professional look to my work.

Totally Great

By T. Rex from St. Louis, MO on 03/03/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have worn out two Epson Photo Stylus R200 printers and was delighted with the quality of the prints. The only problem was that the sheet feed mechanism started giving serious problems. I was able to fix this ( somewhat) and keep them working far beyond their expected lifetime. Then I got an Epson Artisan 50. Wow! This is so much faster than the R200s that it thrills me every time I use it. And, if anything, the picture quality is even better. I also like the software improvements.

Happy

By Bill from Boston, MA on 02/08/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had one of Epson's early photo printers, the R200. It was a great dependable printer that turned out perfect photos. Lasted 9 trouble free years. I wanted a similar non-all in one printer and settled on the Artisan 50. I am running Vista 64 bit. The included driver didn't take so I had to download an updated one from Epson. That went smoothly. Then the moment of truth. I selected one of my better photo's and clicked PRINT. WOW. Excellent pro looking photo. Now if this printer will just last 9 years like the last one.

Artisan 50

By waynelr from Maplewood, MN on 02/07/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer does a beautiful job on color prints and handles CDs or DVDs reasonably. The DVD capability is the reason I bought it and it delivers. It will require restarting when errors happen and is expensive to maintain the ink supply. If you want low cost and high volume this is not your printer of choice.

Epson Artisan 50

By KPKCB from Bridgewater Virginia on 12/17/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a product that meets my needs for a printer that will do a variety of sizes and types of papers. Last Christmas I never knew if the cards I design and sell were going to jam the Epson I used then, or if the printer would simply quit. Regular paper went through without a problem. Epson makes good products, and this Christmas my cards on rag paper came through without hesitation. A great Christmas. My other Epson is now hooked up to my laptop and I will use it wirelessly.

Printer roller marks

By Stardancer from Gates Mills, OH on 12/16/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I bought this printer because I heard it was good for printing greeting cards. I have square images and use square cards from another company. At the time they were the only glossy square cards to be found. When I use them there are printer roller marks on the images. That really bothers me. So I end up printing my square cards on the Epson 2880.

Seems flawed

By RLit from Mendham, NJ on 12/15/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use the Artisan 50 primarily for DVD labels although I also use it occasionally to print the color inserts and covers for DVD cases. I have had two units. The first one lasted a little more than a year and I figured I just got a lemon and the next one would be better. It has lasted longer, but some of the same problems are recurring which preceded the final breakdown of the first unit: When the ink needs to be replaced, all kinds of lights start flashing, not necessarily the ones described in the trouble-shooting guide and the unit does not always respond correctly to the button-pushing sequence given in the instruction manual, making it difficult, nerve wracking and time-consuming. I will not buy this unit again if I can find another DVD label printing machine. It seems flawed in basic design and/or software.

This is my second Artizan 50 in the space of one year, was there something wrong with the first one? NO this printer uses very little ink and as I do a lot of dvd /cd covers and disc prints rather than keep changing top tray to bottom tray I just use each printer for each task. You will not believe just how little ink is used for the discs. and how silent the machine is. ELTORO

Good Quality Print on both Photos and Documents

By GiGi from Kalamazoo, MI on 09/04/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Epson Artisan prints very nice quality photos and documents. I have not used it enough yet to comment on the volume of ink usage. The only thing that I am slightly disappointed with is the operating software packaged with it. It is very simplistic and I really think that Epson could have done a better job of including more editing capabilities with their included software.

Loved the print quality of the original one,no telling how much it had been used. When it finally died (printhead went bad),I Knew I wanted another one not just for photos but for printing on CD"s.The print quality is perfect and the cd labels you can make rival commercial CD"s.Have an officejet for normal print and copy tasks but this printer prints noticeably better Photos,Exellent!

Very reasonably priced CD/DVD printer.

By David C from Gilbert, AZ on 08/05/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Although this printer has been on the market for a while, it is the only reasonable priced choice to print on CD/DVD's, and it works very well. The quality of printing on this media is excellent, as is "regular" printing on various other media. I'm extremely satisfied with this printer.

Artisan 50

By Vidian from Alpine CA on 08/02/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is the second one of these I've bought. the first one lasted for years. it traveled with us in a fifth wheel, Winters in Washington state and a summer in AZ. Printed dozens of DVD's and at least 16 full length movie scripts. Best INK comes from Epson those big 77's (I think). If paper ever jammed, and if it did it was because the paper was funky, not the printer, it was a breeze to un jam. I think of this think as a work horse. The DVD's and scripts are above and beyond our daily needs. The only pictures I print are on the DVD's and they are beautiful. The Epson utility for cleaning the heads and aligning the heads has ALWAYS WORKED. I think the Artisan 50 is great and in a couple of years when this one quits I WILL GET ANOTHER ONE. Love it.

Prize Winning Photographs

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the A 50 because a pro pjotographer wrote a review saying it did a good job on photos and I could afford it. I think he was right. I just won two Honorable Mention ribbons at the county fair. I do find that if I try to print from Photoshop Elements, the results are not good. So, I use Epson Easy Print and that works well.

Artisan 50

By Anonymous from California on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I actually bought the printer because it was at a very low price. However, after using this printer from the very beginning I discovered that this is a great printer for any price. I've referred several of my friends to this printer and they are all hooked. I'm a videographer, RE Broker and I love my Artisan 50. Colors are spectacular. The one disc feed is not even a hassle because I usually only print a single disc. However on occasion I've had to print a few and they were flawless. If you're looking for a low cost excellent printer to get the job way done. A-50 is the real deal.

Great Printer

By Zeke G from Oregon on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Artisan 50 does a great job with all sizes of photo paper. It is used mainly for printing photo-art greeting cards. Excellent results and true to color, texture and overall image quality up to the full size prints of the printers capability. The ONLY complaints is the high cost of inks and that Epson does not warn its customers about the End of Life of this printer after an undetermined number of prints are made and /or the ink pads become over saturated with spent ink.

I love this printer! It is typical of Epson: a quality product. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that the unit is an ink-gussler and the replacements are costly. Over-looking the "cost of operation" (which is hard to do!), this printer is a winner!

I am very please with the Artisan 50 printer. I purchsed it to replace an all-in-one printer scanner. It seems to print faster and the quality is excellent even at what can be considered lower quality settings. Colors are accurate and all prints from 4x4 to 8x10 have been bright and sharp.

By Howie from Jamaica on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The printer is quite nice but the software leaves a lot to be desired as compared to the software for the R280 where you could do much more customization of the print. Also, it continues the tradition of being difficult to clear a paper jam as happens in high humidity such as found in Jamaica where the paper becomes softer and curls a bit.

Printer Pros and Cons

By Beanus from Hendersonville, TN on 08/01/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The quality of print is wonderful, but it's ease of operation is not so good. To explain: The CD tray has to be reset over and over before the printer will work. The documentation that comes with the printer is very vague and tech support isn't much better. Since I've owned it, I have learned all the quirks about it, but it still shouldn't be that hard to operate. I have 3 HP printers that all work like a dream...no problems what so ever.

Bottom Line:

Ok, I bought this to replace my Epson R260. It seems to work fine in all aspects EXCEPT for the DVD/CD printing feature. I spent a very long time trying to get the DVD/CD printing tray to position itself in the slot correctly in order to use the DVD/CD insert, BUT...it will not seat itself No matter what I do it still gives me those flashing red lights indicating that it isn't in place. I really did follow the directions carefully but...it looks like the one main reason for buying this model will escape me and not work. Any suggestions, anyone?

If you get it to work, it works very well. The problem is getting it to work! Had to return the first one and Epson replaced it. The replacement also fails to work so far. It misreads the fact that I want to prent a CD and tells me to add paper. So far, I have not been able to make it work. It even reads new printer cartridge as empty. Never had so much trouble with a new printer.

Artisan 50

By ODD Video from Oceanside, CA on 05/16/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I recently purchased this printer as a direct replacement for the R280 printer that I finally blew up. Yep, blew up. I tend to really work out my printers and drive them into the ground after a couple of years. I do a ton of DVD production work out of my little Home Studio Office. As a Professional Videographer, I prefer to handle all aspects of my post production, including the packaging and design. I need both a printer that can handle heavier weighted paper (69 lb), and can print on DVD's if I have too (I have an Artisan 710 that I prefer to print my DVD's on... it's faster and better with the auto tray). Problem with the 710 is that it doesn't like heavier paper to pull though, so the sheet feed on the 50 works just like my old R280. In fact... it seems to be exactly like my R280, with a few cosmetic changes. If you are looking for an inexpensive solution, AND DVD print capability, look no further than the Artisan 50.

Wanted to be able to print CD's. Got one of these 5 years ago. Carried it with me on our RV to the winter in Washington State and a summer in Yuma, AZ and then home for the past 2+ years. Text, photo and optical disk printer.

By hotdog12 from Houston on 04/05/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My 15-year-old Epson Stylus Photo 900 finally died--horribly--and I needed a quick replacement to print photos, text and onto the surface of CD/DVD/Blu-ray disks. There are only a limited number of printers that can handle optical disks and I chose the Epson Artisan 50 based on mostly-favorable reviews and my prior experience with Epson products. I avoided the combo printers that scan or print from cell phones, camera card, etc. etc. on the assumption that more bells and whistles generates more breakdowns. Simplicity is our friend. The Artisan 50 has a small footprint that fit exactly where my old printer sat--some photo printers are as big as Buick! Setup was a snap. I installed the software (do this first!), plugged it in, snapped in the six ink cartridges (included) and connected the USB 2.0 cord to my Win 7 Pro computer. Epson had a driver update so I installed that, too. Bingo! It was good to go. Text printouts on normal paper are clean. Printing onto CD/DVD/Blu-ray disks is a no-brainer and the appearance is clearly superior to my old Epson 900. Photos on Epson glossy paper are better than I get from most photo stores. I'm still trying to fine-tune the color management system to exactly match my monitor (I'm a photojournalist). That's a pro headache, however, no "normal" person would even notice! I read several reviews by people who had terrible problems with the Artisan 50 failing after changing ink cartridges. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will update this review immediately if I ever have a problem. Frankly, I'm thinking seriously of getting a continuous ink system (CIS) for the Artisan 50. I'm really, REALLY, sick of paying obscene prices for Epson ink. I'll post my experience after I run through my starter ink and spare set of ink cartridges. Bottom line: this is an excellent printer with easy setup that does exactly what I want. Five stars--for now!

REview of Epson Artisan 50

Bottom Line:

WOW...Fantastic!!!!! As a (now retired) photographer, I had always used, with great success, the Epson R260. Sad to say, the 260 finally "died" on me. I immediately called Epson to see if they still made this model...they do not, but it has been replaced by the Epson Artisan 50. "Rob" of Epson was very helpful to me and very thorough in taking my order. While he said it would arrive in 5-6 days, it arrived in three days! It was very easy to set up, and....the pictures are every bit as gorgeous as what I had gotten with the R260. I highly recommend this printer for quality prints!

I Can't Believe It!

By Rich from Pioneer, California on 02/08/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have struggled for several years with another brand's printers. Finally, I gave up and took the last one to the recycler. Short of money, I bought about the least expensive Epson's I could find with good reviews for printing pictures. The Artison 50 was it. The setup went smoothly and the printer worked well right off the mark. Color pictures are beautiful, even on the other brand's leftover paper. The only glitch was that I made the mistake of checking to see if there is an upgrade for the driver. This sent me into a never-never land and I had to reload from the disk. Someday I will learn to leave well enough alone. Nevertheless, I can't believe what a good job it does. I am very happy with it and gladly recommend it.

So far, so good

By Clark from Blairsville, PA on 01/28/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the Artisan 50 primarily for printing CD/DVD labels, so I did not need the bells and whistles of an All-in One - besides, I have an All-in One from another company:(. I printed my first BEAUTIFUL label about 15 minutes after I opened the box. Since I will be printing mostly CD/DVD labels, I left the tray in position and I turned off the printer, ready for the next one. About 2 days later, tried to print another label. I kept getting an upper tray error and 2 flashing lights. I took the paper tray out and put it in the lower position and the error went away. When I re-positioned it to print the label, the error message came back. Finally, I figured out that if I closed the front cover, it somehow reset the printer and it worked GREAT! I hope this will help others who may be having a similar problem. It seems as though closing the front cover has a magic button that fixes certain errors. As others have posted, Epson is a little lacking in their documentation, but with my knowledge of computers and peripherals, it is not a big problem for me.

This is the second Artisan 50 I have purchased. I do Photo's, Membership Cards and Mailings for a Club I belong to. The speed is good and color photos are great. I occasinally print on CD's and its easy to setup and usr. My only regret is that I only get two years of use before envelopes and card stock no longer feed thru the machine. I have used Epson machines for 20 years and prefer them over other machines I have used.

First Rate Printer

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an excellent printer which produces very realistic photo prints. I've had the printer for over a month, and I'm now in the process of printing a large number of photos taken over Christmas. Ink cartridge replacement is a snap. To Epson's credit, the printer ships with full ink cartridges and not starter cartridges. I am not a fan of all-in-ones, but prefer separate devices such as printers and scanners, etc. For those looking for a great photo printer, look no further. The Artisan 50 can't be beat!

SOME SMUDGES

By CHASSY from Boston, Ma on 12/28/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned the Artisan 50 for about 8 months. Lately, when printing photos, and especially on envelopes, there is sometimes "smudging" on the edges of the photo and along the sides of the envelopes. I was told the problem is the "sponges" (that collect extra sprayed ink) get saturated over time, and leak. The sponges cannot be replaced. So the printer has to be replaced. Not too good.

Epson Artisan 50

By Bigringbob from Western Springs, Il. on 12/18/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my third Epson printer over the years and I have been happy with all three. When my last one died last week after about six years of continual use I knew I wanted to replace it with another Epson. This printer is our home printer, meaning we use it for documents, homework and photos. I assumed it would be fine for documents but was truly amazed at the quality of the photos it has been producing. It's even better than my last two, and I was quite satisfied with them. What I like most is that the photos come out beautifully without all the tweaking many of my friends talk about with their printers. (Not Epsons) I could go on and on about the true colors and such but let's just say I know this will not be my last Epson.

Epson Artisan 50 Inkjet Printer

I recently became the happy owner of the above-referenced printer. Regrettably, my previous workhorse, the Epson Stylus Color 860, which I loved, bit the dust when a replacement printhead no longer was available. I was deeply saddened as I loved the quality. After consulting with Epson, the Artisan 50 was recommended. Although I have yet to put it through it's full paces, it appears to be better than comparable to my previous Epson. Set-up was quite easy and the quality of the output is excellent.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I started out with and Epson R280 many years ago and I printed a lot of CDs and DVDs (thousands) and many HI Quality photos and the only reason it failed is because I spilled a noxious liquid into it and trashed the electronics. In looking for a worthy replacement, I found the Aritisan 50 is the replacement for the R280. I bought the 50 and was very pleased that it had the same specs and the actual output was every bit as good. Sometimes when a new model replaces an older one the quality suffers a bit. NOT in this case. I was surprised how accurate it was out of the box, of course it an Epson, so I should have expected as much. I was also able to print a 8 1/2 X 44 inch picture with it which seemed like a bonus. Great panorama printer. I crunch a lot of documentary videos onto DVD so this printer is a very important tool. Its colors are truely vibrant on paper and printable DVDs. I will start using the water resistant DVDs in the future though. The photos from this printer rival anything I have gotten from a lab. And don't even try talk to me about the competition. I have used them and in my opinion, give me the 50.

As of right now I'm waiting on my 2nd printer because the 1st one they sent me had issues. I couldn't get pass step 3 in the setup. The carriage that holds the ink would not slide over so that I could load the new ink cartriges. We'll see how the next one works...:-)

Quality Is Number 1

Bottom Line:

Artisian 50 - One of the few printer that I have had no problems with before (this is my 4th printer from Epson) Had minor problem with this uinit and Epson stepped up and fixed it at once. The cd/dvd tray works every time and the print quality is the best I have ever had. Ease of use 5 stars, ease of setup 5 stars, the only down side that I could ever think about is the amount of ink that I use (I do a lot of printing), and there is no high capacity cartridges - would highly reccomend to anyone.

As with all the Epson printers I have owned and wore out over the years, I am very pleased with the output quality, speed, looks and with this model, the CD printing. I will keep buying Epson printers for as long as they produce the quality I am used to. I would recommend Epson printers to anyone looking for quality at the right price.

good printer

Bottom Line:

I bought this as a replacement for my 3 year old R280 which just died. Initial setup was a nightmare, 3 install and uninstalls and finally had to call in and he had me redo things 3 times to get it up and running. Now that it is running it is great. It is pretty much the same as my old one with several slight improvements. It seems to print faster than its predecessor, with less hesitation between prints. I am very pleased with the performance so far.

Artisan 50

By intexas from San Antonio on 09/13/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The first time we printed a full bleed 8.5 x 11 proof of our product literature our jaws dropped at the quality of the images and the look of the piece. We now use the Artisan 50 to print all our product literature on "brochure" paper and even our customers make remarks about the quality of the work our "printing company" does with our literature. We print only what we need and now we can even customize the literature for each show, event or even customer. We picked the Artisan 50 because it has no frills and does one job, printing. This little gem has printed at least 5k pages saved us thousands of dollars.

Artisan 50

By Vidguy from Maryland on 09/04/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had the old version, 280 for a long time and it was quite fickle as it got older and finally I had had enough as it would constantly go into error mode. I have been using the 50 now and so far so good. It is faster than its predecessor. It is smooth and neat. The price was right for this type of printer as I use it mainly for printing on DVDs. We shall see with time how this goes but I am optimistic

Print Quality Degrades Quickly

By Wrapper from Dallas, TX on 09/01/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It is the beginning of September, 2012 and I'm getting ready to submit a warranty claim on my second Artisan 50 of this year. This one was purchased on March 16, 2012, and it printed beautifully for a while. Then it started depositing ink on the CD tray edges, then smears of ink on the print rollers, then ink blobs on CDs, and now ink smears at the top and edges of what ever the print area is. No amount of cleaning fixes these problems.

Very Pleased

By oldguy from Chico, CA on 08/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this printer for one specific task, to print onto CD and DVD discs, I couldn't have been more pleased with my purchase. First, the setup was soooooo simple. The software did everything for me, I only had to answer a few preference questions. Inside of 30 minutes from opening the box, I was printing my first disc and when it popped out.... so did my eyes. I had to touch the disc over and over to see if my creation was true. Thank you Epson for providing an affordable printer with disc labeling capabilities for the not so wealthy. From now on my discs will have a professional look to them instead of using paper labels (still not a bad way to go).

Third time is a charm

By Sheridan from Pittsburgh on 08/16/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this printer to replace an R280 that had after about three years developed a problem with colors bleeding together. The R280 replaced an R260 that had given up the ghost. I particularly chose these printers for the CD print capability, but also for the high quality photo printing. One thing I found immediately is that the color accuracy of the Artisan 50 is even better than that of its predecessors (which was pretty good). With Epson paper the Artisan really does produce photos as good as or better than a lab. I have not tried it with non-Epson photo papers, but based on previous experience I would not expect especially good results. I'm not sure whether that is an issue with the printer itself or with the driver software. I am resolved to the fact that printers like this need to be replaced after a while. I don't mind too much as long as the ink cartridges (the real cost of the printer) are compatible with the new version of the printer. I do occasionally have a problem with the printer not taking the CD tray correctly on the first try, but this seems to have improved a lot from the R260 and R280. I am generally pleased with the way this printer functions, but I am knocking off one star for the high ink prices.

Faulty printer

By DeeDee from Los Angeles, CA on 08/14/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm not sure if we just got a "lemon" or what, but from day one, this printer was never reliable and had several issues. From the CD feeder not working properly, to running out of ink after printing only 30-40 poor quality pages with little to no text, this printer cost me way more money than it was worth, on ink alone. After buying Epson for 10 years, I'm through with this company and their printers. I have to say the worst printer ever. It never worked properly since I took it out of the box and had we not ordered it online, I would have returned it. I kept hoping it would just kick in and function right but it never did.

An excellent choice

By cstms228 from Brooklyn, NY on 03/31/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought this to replace my old Epson R200, and am very satisfied with it. It prints fast, with good color composition. My only negative relates to the software accompanying it. The Epson easy print is all right for a quick print, but offers not much else if you want to modify the image in any way. The Epson creative app is not much either. I have more flexibility with Windows Live Photo Gallery. Maybe real techies and photophiles will have reservations about it, but not me. I would definitely recommend this printer.

If you don't use or need fax this is by far the best buy of all 4 of the Epson Printers that I have owned. I have been amazed at the quality of prints I'm getting now. I'm using lower settings now, photo instead of best photo, thus using less ink and getting a sharper image. Thanks

Right out of the box, the printer started making money for me. Excellent driver for Snow Leopard and INDD integration. Able to handle funky sizes and heavy weights without the slipping and skewing I have had with so many other inkjets. Seems well designed and durable - hopefully will be able to handle a sustained load of quality printing over time.

Printing my DVDs with the Epson Artisan 50 Inkjet

By Ol' Dave from Arizona desert on 03/20/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I really like the Epson Artisan 50 Inkjet Printer very much...there is a rather difficult "learning curve" that comes along with the printer...but with a lil' paitence and study I was able to accomplish my objective...which was to print the DVDs that I produce. The printer does a very nice job..so my DVDs look pretty nice for my customers. The software and label printing programs are pretty easy to use and do a nice job...The only problem is that it sucks up ink from the cartridges pretty fast...and it takes (6) cartridges. Overall tho...I highly recommend it. Ol' Dave

second lemon! avoid this model

By minibar from New York City, NY on 03/20/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It might be just lousy luck, but even though Epson replaced my first Artisan 50, the second wasn't any better at basic printing. Photographs on both #1 and #2 printed with glitches--thin line-like gaps every inch or so. Well, I don't print photos that often, mostly just documents. But even them! Blotches of black ink often appear on the corners of perfectly smooth sheets of paper and I have to re-print. I'd asked Epson what model replaced my former printer, the Epson Stylus Photo 900, and they said this one. The old printer did everything well, but this one, nothing! I like the faster pace and dust cover, but print quality itself has taken a nose dive. Pay more and get a better model, I say, or just trust to luck on this model.

Nice littlel printer

By Endervikin from Roanoke VA on 03/15/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Easy to setup and it works well. I wouldn't recommend printing a high volume of DVDs. It would take a while. The printing is rather slow. I've had a little trouble switching between DVD and regular printing. The tray has to be repositioned each time and I had to remove and reinsert a few times to get it to show "ready". Over-all it seems to be working well and the quality of the printing is good.

Epson Artisan 50- Great printer

By Mike from Phoenix, AZ on 01/27/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I own 10 Artisan 50 printers and use them for printing CD, DVD and Blu-Ray discs. They do an excellent job printing discs! I have run thousands of discs thru these printers and would recommend them to anyone who wants to print exceptional quality discs. Great Printer! Cons: The printer driver software changed. Previously I owned 10 R260 printers and print one face label to all 10 printers at the same time. This worked perfectly with XP. When the R260 was discontinued, I went with the Artisan 50 and updated the computer these would run on to windows 7. Epson needs to rewrite the driver to work the same way as it did with XP. I could not print to all the printers at the same time with Windows 7the print spooler would crash once I tried to run the 3rd printer. I had to retire the new computer and go back to XP. All the Artisan 50s work on the XP and have since the Artisan 50 came out! I have to keep running an old computer with xp just to print discs! But it is worth itlove the quality the Epson Artisan 50 has.

God help you if you print discs

By Frustrated user from Chicago on 10/11/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It works fine if you print on paper. If you have to print onto inkjet printable DVD's, good luck. The first disc prints fine but the second disc the printer spits out the tray and won't print. To get the 2nd and more discs to print you have to remove the disc tray and holder, power down the printer anad wait for the lights to stop blinking and reinstall the tray. It takes and agonizing 5 minutes to get the 2nd disc to print. This happens EVERY time you have to print more than one disc. Reloading the software didnt fix the problem.

Professional Videographers

By mickyb from Minden City Mi on 09/24/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

As far as a general purpose printer, no one printer can do everything always the best. The Artisans printer falls into that class, this printer is not very expensive, but it works well. For document printing I do have a problem with paper jamming, but for DVDs this printer works great, for a photo printer its ok. So in my opinion with the printer I have, now remember they might not all be the same. 1. As far as a document printer I get paper jamming. 2. As far as a photo printer the pictures look fine. 3. For a DVD a Cd printer, my printer works great, one of the best I have ever had, we print over 500 DVDs a year. 4. I love the ability to change individual color cartridges. Though it seems sometimes there is still ink in them. Over all I think this printer is a good all-around printer for the money.

Artison 50 is another Epson winner!

By theboysgrammy from Central Florida on 08/30/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After many years of wonderful service, my Epson Stylus Pro R320 died. I've had Epson printers for nearly 30 years so I naturally went to Epson for my new printer. In speaking with the rep at Epson and analyzing my printing needs, he suggested the Artisan 50. I couldn't be happier with it not only for ease of operation, small footprint but also the quality of the printing. I will grant you I haven't printed a photo yet, but I have no doubt it will be every bit as fabulous as my old printer. In my book, and in my experience, an Epson printer is the ONLY way to go. The quality, performance and price cannot be beaten.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a professional I have used Epson Printers for years. Hard to believe but this little printer out performs any of the photo labs I have tried. I use it for gang prints to show clients and the odd 8x10 for larger prints I plan on getting to the new R-2000, The Artisan 50 works great with Epson Papers and The Pictorica papers I use a lot. It doesnt cost a lot to invest the unit; you will easily use many times the dollar value in ink and paper. My only wish is that the ink cartridges were larger. I know there are after market options but I like the results with Epson inks.

Epson Artisan 50

By SEMI-RETIRED from Oakmont, PA on 07/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This printer was just received, purchased as a replacement for an obsolete R-220 which had died. The Artisan 50 is much faster, uses Claria ink which is the best dye ink, and cost no more than repairing the old printer. The speed is astonishing while the resolution is more than adequate for this 8-1/2" printer. It makes very good 8 x 10 prints. It also does a very fast job on draft copy texts. I think this is probably the best performance-to-price choice presently on the market.

ALMOST as good as the R260!

By Harry from Riverton, Utah on 06/23/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use two Epson R260s, one Epson R280 and three Epson Artisan 50 printers. Almost exclusively I print CDs and DVDs on these printers. The R260s have been fantastic--they just keep running and running with the least amount of down-time--although a tad bit slower. The R280 does a pretty good job, and the Artisan 50s are good with one exception: When the printer wants to regenerate the ink cartrage after a certain number of prints, it will STOP in the middle of the print job and wait for me to press the ink button to regenerate. It thus ejects the unfinished CD/DVD and I LOOSE the CD/DVD I was printing. I use CISS ink systems on all printers and NEVER have to worry about running out of ink. This is the ONLY way to go for ink!! It's WAY cheaper and the quality seams to be the same. On my current Windows XP computer that I am using, I can't use the Artisan 50 drivers or I will get Print Spool errors and cause all sorts of downtime. So I use the R280 print driver instead. I still get an error when I hit "Print" but this is easy to ignore and causes no downtime. I'm about to switch over to my new Windows 7 computer, and perhaps I can then use the Artisan 50 print drivers. . .perhaps. Never-the-less, these printers are great work horses with excellant quality and I recommend them all!

Not just for photos

By LadyLeaf from Santa Maria CA on 04/24/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I'm a digital artist and also do quite a bit of photo restoration. Since I don't charge for my work, I suppose technically I'm not a professional. Print quality and especially color fidelity is very, very important to me. I've begun ordering my large framed prints, so felt I don't need another wide-format printer. But that doesn't mean I can do without an extremely accurate, reliable printer for trial runs and final proofing. After reading a number of reviews and having a lengthy conversation with an Epson salesperson about my needs I decided to take a chance on the Epson Artisan 50, and am very, very pleased. Frankly the low price worried me. Could I spend so little and still be able to print out non-photo graphics as well as photos with accurate color and fine resolution and detail? After I got my Artisan 50 I made prints of two new works of digital art. Photomanipulations done in Photoshop Elements using Elements, Topaz and Nik plugin filters. I made a lot of color changes and with one even used a complicated tutorial for creating an effect which looks exactly like a color pencil drawing after cutting, pasting and blending parts of two photos together. The other piece involved using a threshold adjustment layer and textured paint brushes on the layer mask. Using very little tweaking I printed my pieces from PSE 8 on Epson Ultra Premium Matte Presentation paper. After examined the final prints under a magnifying glass, comparing them to how they looked on my MacBook Pro's display, was delighted to see the colors were as perfect as the eye could see and the detail clear as a bell. I really thought I'd need to do a lot of color management to get such good quality. I actually did very little yet got quality which was better than I often got on much more elaborate and expensive printers. I was also a bit worried about color gamut, but the 50 went the whole 9 yards with me. I got lovely, delicate bluish-grays and yellowish-browns to the rose colors used on the second piece without any changes in set-ups. Since I was just testing out the printer for the first time I didn't want to bother. Yet to my very pleasant surprise I got color quality on both pieces which I consider as perfect as I could hope for. Unless I need a print larger than the Artisan 50 can provide, what I did get is ready for framing right "from the oven." I'm really glad I've stuck with Epson.

Great Photo Prints

By DrWho from Minneapolis, MN on 03/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wow. The colors are true and vivid. It does make a difference what kind of paper you use. Plain paper looks good, but treated paper (satin finish, bright white) looks visibly better. Borderless printing works well, but you must use good paper. If your paper is slightly curled up on the edge the print head will catch on it and chew up the edge and cause ink smudges. I have a few minor criticisms of the Photo Print software. Manually laying out a photo is not easy. First, you must bravely ignore a warning that all selected photos will be "deleted". Once you do get past that, selecting a photo for printing is not intuitive. There might have been a couple of predefined frames supplied too. At first it appeared that the frame option was useless, but after I discovered how to create my own frames it was a very nice feature. I haven't tried printing CDs yet, but if it works as well as the rest it will be great.

Epson Artisan 50

By Anonymous from Louisville< KY on 03/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After many years of service, I have upgraded my Epson R220 to the Epson Artisan 50 which I installed this morning. Installation was easy. I did have to download and print the "Quick Guide" because it was not included in the delivered printer. Otherwise I could not be more pleased with the operation of the new printer. The printing is much faster than my previous printer and when I printed a picture I was most pleased with the results. It is too early to tell how long the ink supply will last, but early indications look promising.

I've been using Epson printers for at keast 20 years now. I was always satisfied with their performance. With the Artisan 50 I am very disapointed because I bought it especialy to print on CD & DVD's and that part does not work that well. For normal printing duties the printer is Okee.

i bought a refurb version, from epson.com. print is crisp and precise on paper, and one of the few printers that print directly onto a CD-R/DVD-R without having to use labels. for the money, you absolutely cannot find a better deal on a printer that prints on these types of media. thumbs up!

Epson Artisan 50

By KinoJack from Redford, Michigan on 01/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After my Epson R200 finally quit printing properly (ink pad problems) after 7 years, I decided to order a new Epson. I decided on the Artisan 50, since I do a majority of my printing on CD/DVD. I received the printer 2 days after placing order. The setup instructions were very clear and I had the printer running in less than 1 hour. I tested the print quality of the Artisan 50 and was quite amazed at the beautiful prints on my printable DVD disk. I was so impressed with the quality, I just ordered a 2nd Artisan 50 for my daughter. Her R200 is now 6 years old and her Birthday is coming up in February. Thank you Epson Support Staff for assisting me in trying to prolong the life of my old R200. Also, my compliments to the engineers at Epson. You design some of the Best products.

Epson Printers

By Msquad99 from Burbank, California on 01/12/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this opportunity to review not just one, but two Epson printers in the hope that this review might influence the current and future manufacture of certain Epson printers. I acquired the Artison 50 because the semi-new Workforce 40 that I purchased a few months ago has failed. The printer itself is a very good product. The Workforce 40 has a design flaw in that the foam template piece that is nested in the bed under which the print head strikes, has a tendency to come loose and pull up rendering the printer useless. In the Artison 50 is appears that a template made of fiber material is in place thus eliminating this problem. I have noticed other less expensive lines of printers that also utilized the foam template cut out in the same position. This is a serious flaw unless that foam piece is very securely held in place over the life of the printer. Anything less than a very strong adhesive used on the foam parts will eventually lead to failure of the part. The better idea is the fiber cut out that is in place in the Artison 50 series of printers. Also, I am not so thrilled with the fact that the Artison requires more color cartridges than the Workforce. Two changes of ink cartridges and I am approaching the cost of buying a new printer. Otherwise, both printers, the Artison 50 and the Workforce 4 are wonderful pieces of equipment that I would recomment to others.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I replaced my R220 photo printer with the Artisan 50 as it was literally the only printer I could find with disc printing capabilities. The Artisan 50 prints at a very high resolution on any type of paper or printable CD/DVD. The print time is also very fast. I would recomend this printer to anyone looking for a high-quality photo printer.

Great little printer

By LG63 from Oregon on 12/29/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My R260 died (hardware failure) after 5 years of pretty intense use printing note cards, larger prints, labels and documents of all shapes and sizes. The Artisan 50 right out of the box worked great. I even installed my older cartridges from the R260 as they were half full. The charging process ate a bit more ink than I expected but that's the way of ink jet technology. Changing out spent cartridges worked flawlessly. The prints look great, the printer runs quiet and seems a bit faster than the R260. Overall, I am very happy with the Artisan 50. Hopefully it will continue to perform well for many years to come.

R200 only better

By Anonymous from Washington on 12/25/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this printer to replace my R-200 I bought about 10 years ago. I was pretty sad when the old printer died and I wondered if there was a good replacement out there. The Artisan 50 has taken the place of the old R-200 and I'm happy to say that it is quieter, faster, better than my old reliable R-200 which is saying a lot. The print quality is better and I could not be more pleased. I knew going in that the ink was expensive, but I'm used to that. If you don't use genuine epson ink, your printing will show the difference. If you don't care, I guess that's ok. I print a lot of CD covers so quality printing is a big deal for me. The print cd software is not much different if at all so there is no learning curve if you have already used it. This is a lot of printer for not much money, and all it does is print, it's not a do it all printer. But what it does, it does extremely well and that's where the rubber meets the road for me. Great Job Epson, I'm a fan now for going on two decades.

Epson Artisan 50 Ink Jet Printer

Bottom Line:

EXCELLENT!! This is the best printer I have owned, and I have 4, and 4 I use at work that makes 8. I am now seriously looking at getting the 4800. I am in the graphic design field at a screenprinting shop and we do a lot of our own flyers, customer approval prints and colour sheet work orders. I have used it to print 8"X10" full colour photos and they look amazing there is no banding in the half tones, there is no line breaking in th black no matter which angle you look at it. I would highly recommend this printer. Relativly inexpensive ink, and you can replace only the colours you need. TT

My New Epson

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Artisan 50 is the third epson colour printer that I have owned and I have been a loyal Epson customer for 15 years. My previous c62 performed admirably for over 5 years, so when it was time to buy a new printer I looked only at Epson models and selected the Artisan 50. I am extremely happy with this printer. It was easy to install, and very user friendly to use. The quality of the print, both colour and black and white is superb. The bonus programs that come with this printer are also excellent. I would highly recommend this printer for its price point value, ease of installation, quality of print, and user friendly manual and support materials.

I was looking for an addition to my Epson 4x6 photo printer in order to expand to the larger print sizes (up to 8.5x11). I use this printer daily for photo printing. Artisan 50 driver installation

By pauly from Nanaimo, BC on 11/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Artisan 50 is a great little economy priced printer that is once the driver package is installed as this turns out to be the tough part, at least in my case. Following the instructions to the letter failed to install the driver. When asked to connect the printer via USB plug the driver found the printer, at least I thought so, because another message appeared near the end of the install stating printer not found. So with the driver CD still in the drive I decided to let windows find the driver software. The instructions which came with printer stated that this way was a no no., but this was the only way that the driver installed successfully. So perhaps, at least for some people, this should be written up as an alternative choice.

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased an Artisan 50 IJ printer a few weeks ago. I immediately had problems printing CDs. I couldn't print a CD unless I first printed a picture. Then the printer would allow me to position the tray and load a CD without all the lights blinking. But now it will not print at all. When it did print, the quality exceeded my expectations. Photos and CDs were certainly better than any printer I had purchased in the past. If I could just get it to work.

Bottom Line:

I answered NO to recommending to a friend because there was no choice to chose "maybe" The printer looks nice and prints well, I think. (I just unwrapped it and the first prints were fine.) But the printer came with two installable trays. One is for printing on a CD or DVD. I don't know what the other is for and there is no explanation. Illustration for placing the DVD tray in place is unclear, and talking to a tech representative was about as clear as the illustration. Maybe when I get to understand this, I will feel a bit better about the printer.

Epson Printers..Only Kind I use & Recommend!!

By Peachy in South Ga. from Southeast Georgia on 10/08/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For years I used the Epson 220 until lightening hit our house. I decided to try the Artisan 50 and I am so glad I did. I thought the 220 was great, but the Artisan 50 has been exceptional!! I am a photographer and very happy over the clairity and depth preception and most of all the richness of the colors of my photos. I never thought I would like any other printer than my 220 but the Artisan has exceeded my expectations. I also own the Stylus Photo 1400. *I will talk about that one later!* :) There is no way anyone could talk me into using any other brand of printers. As the old saying goes..Why try the rest when I own the best!! Epson is all I will ever need to fulfill my needs in printing out my photos. I use no other inks than Epson, they dry almost instantly and leave no smudges or smears if I accidentally touch one. There is no waiting the 24 hours for it to dry so I can print out and frame my photos all in one day. I just purchased my first high capacity ink cartridges and I know I will be pleased with the extra prints at an affordable price. Thank you Epson for making such fine printers at a price anyone in need of a printer could afford.

I have used Epson R260, 280, and 380's for over 4 years. This is my first Artisan 50. When I installed it made a lot of grinding noises when starting up. When I go to use the PRINT CD function, a page of paper wants to run through the printer although CD tray is in position. Then after 4-5 attempts, tray finally goes all the way in (without error of CD Tray not set correctly) and may print on CD. Not too impressed with this new model.

Perfect replacement for my Epson R220

By Photogeod from Overland Park, Ks on 05/17/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

When my Epson R220 printer finally gave out. I did not know what to do to get a replacement of the same quality. Most stores offer a lot of multifunction printers. I am not interested in a copy printer, a fax printer or multipurpose printers. I wanted to spend my money on a quality printer that would get me the best printer for my money. I do a lot of photography and detail and quality are important to me. My new Epson Artisan 50 is the quality printer that I had hoped for. I checked reviews on other printers as well as the Artisan 50 before purchasing and felt comfortable buying this one. I would definately recommend this printer for anyone wanting a quality printer for photos.

Fast and Sharp

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My first printer was an Epson 860 that lasted forever and still worked like a charm when I donated it after ten years of hard steady use. Received other brands as gifts but they didn't quite cut it. It was time to move on up since I print a lot on CD & DVD media. Thus far Artisan 50 works extremely fast and produces sharp images both on paper and discs. I especially appreciate the printer showing the ink levels as you go, taking the guess work out of ink replacement. Good buy at a good prince. Titan777

Great deal for your money!

By Wolfie from Hampton, Connecticut on 12/16/2009

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used Epson inkjet printers for many years and have always enjoyed the high quality of the product. As a professional photographer, I'm looking for a printer that renders exceptional quality and that can reproduce my images to my standards. Since the Epson Photo Stylus R800 was my primary photo printer, and is no longer available, I decided to give the Epson Artisan 50 printer a try. I wanted to see if all the boasting about quality really was true. After using the Epson Artisan 50 printer for a couple days, and picking the best settings to use in Adobe Photoshop and Apple's Pages, I wasted little ink and paper to come up with exceptional quality images. The Artisan 50 excelled beyond what I had expected. And since I calibrate my monitor, my prints are greatly accurate, rendering images so close to what I see. Color accuracy, tonal range, sharpness in detail, tonal separation, ink drying time, these qualities hit the mark! Epson has done an great job with this printer. The next thing is to see how long the ink cartridges last. Perhaps my next purchase will be the large capacity #77 inks.
