Where to begin... First off, Smartscan isn't. It just seems to pick random frequencies. The first time I tried it it picked the frequency of the strongest channel in town. Second, the amount of static is extremely annoying. The only way I could get it to be remotely listenable on a road trip in western Montana where I was probably over 100 miles from any stations was to switch to Mono. I tried 6 different frequencies and could not get a clear signal on any. In town, I was getting static even in Mono every time I went through a traffic signal. Third, the output signal is very low compared to other sources (CD or radio). While this is minor, I believe it could have something to do with the poor performance of this unit.
On the positive side, the form factor and physical appearance are nice, but they don't make up for the shortcomings of this product. (I did, after all, buy it because I wanted to LISTEN to my iPod in the car, not look at it.)
