Last year I bought a JBL round-ring thingamajig to play my iPod Nano on the go. After one overseas trip (it's first), the ring (as I used to call it), went kaput. Since then I had been on the lookout for a combo clock radio/iPod player-recharger/CD/MP3 player (I know, like that's commonly available). I gave this Jensen gizmo a try because 1) it had the features I wanted and 2) an attractive price.
The package arrived on time - as and when promised, complete with daily emails on the shipments status enroute.
Yes, the operating instructions are somewhat lengthy (very first time I heard ANY musical instrument tell moi, "Music should be listened to at safe volume....") and that's only because there are so many features to explain.
I first popped in my iPod Nano. (Btw, the midnight-black Nano riding shotgun to this unit's black contours is a marriage made in electronic accessorizing heaven). The iPod plays very well. It never skips a beat, re-charges during its down time, and pops off easily to accommodate my go-go lifestyle (never you mind about that). Snap back, bucko. If the iPods steering wheel is touched when the iPod is mounted to the gizmo, the iPod screen (predictably) lights up. Music continues playing as commanded. The screen goes blank after a few seconds, just as it happens when you hold a fully charged iPod solo. Mounted to the unit, the iPod rests at an ergonomically sensible 70% off of horizontal (same angle one holds an open book).
I then popped in a CD. Every track worked beautifully, as it should. There is no audible hand-off hiss between tunes.
Finally I tried an MP3 disc. The disc played just fine. Beware: MP3 disc quality is as good as the source music. Some hand-offs carry a hiss that is audible if you are close to the unit. That is not the fault of this unit.
The only slight down side I have experienced was having to pay very close attention when setting the alarm clock. Make sure the teeny-tiny clock appears in the upper left hand corner of the display or the alarm wont be set and you will be (as I was the first time) late for an important engagement!
So what about the music itself? The sound is crisp. Considering its size, the sound quality generally exceeds any clock radio I have had. I often have to remind myself this a CLOCK RADIO, after all. The mid-range factory issue bass, treble and general tone settings sounds A-OK. With a battery backup, I cant wait to take this baby (oops, did I say baby, I meant gizmo) on my next overseas trip.
