Won't let you record any movies

By Just want my shows from Seattle, WA on 01/21/2009

Cons:

Blocking Recording

Describe Yourself:

Enthusiast

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Bought this so that I'd have the tuner and be able to save the stuff off my Tivo and clear up space on it. This unit won't let me record anything that has a copyright on it. That's pretty much any movie I save to my Tivo and more and more TV shows. It's ridiculous. I've had other DVD recorders with no issue. I'm able to save them to TIVO, what's the difference if I want to put them into a different format so I can watch them on my other TV while I lie in bed? Taking the unit back.

It's not bad.....

By Home Video Junkie Verified Purchaser from Pittsburgh, PA on 07/18/2008

Cons:

Poor Ntsc Tuner Quality

Pros:

Fast Setup, Attractive Design

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've owned a number of other JVC products over the years, but this one just doesn't make the grade. DVD playback is great on my 61" Samsung with the 1080 upconversion, and old VHS tapes even look better. The problem is on the recording side. The ATSC digital tuner gives a great picture, unfortunately, I can't say the same for the NTSC tuner. Some channels are great. while others are fuzzy. Switching between the tuners and setting up recordings is more complicated than it should be, and my wife, who likes things simple, refuses to even try it.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

I've only had the unit for a short time, but I've been really putting it through the paces, and have found it to be (so far) flawless. I chose the JVC, since I needed a unit that had both an input and output RF connection (to be able to run the cable directly, using the JVC's built-in digital tuner for my older television), plus a DVD recorder and a 1080 upconvert, AND both a DVD and VHS operation. This JVC was the only one that had ALL the features I needed. Even the remote control is well designed. I'm very pleased with the unit.
