This product has a significant limitation which I had not encountered in DVD/VCR recorders I have used heretofore. It can not record, finalize, nor display back a title menu list (i.e. in LIST form) on DVD-R discs. It can do so only on costlier DVD-RW (i.e., rewritable) discs which can then be played only on compatible DVD-RW disc players but not on standard simple DVD-R players. Altho the recorder can name and insert titles into title-menu thumbnails on DVD-R discs, only the first few characters of the title name are visible within the limited space inside a tumbnail, thus making title names in the thumbnail list virtually useless,-- unlike a title "list" in which the entire 32 characters of each name are visible.
The JVC product user-manual in most respects is thorough and well written. Hhowever, the page containing detailed instructions for "naming" of titles fails to advise or note that "naming" menu titles with this recorder on DVD-R discs will insert and finalize the names only within the thumbnails, but does not create or display title menu LISTS, and that creating, finalizing and display of a menu title LIST with this recorder is possible only on DVD-RW discs ,- but not on DVD-R discs.
Since in my experience it is customary, when inserting a DVD in a DVDlayer, that the opening screen displays a menu-title list, - not a thumbnail title list. However, with DVD-R discs created on this JVC DVD/VCR recorder, the initial opening display when inserting the DVD in a DVD-R player can only be a thumbnail list, with only a few characters of a title name visible within each thumbnail ,- not a very useful opening title menu from which to make a selection.
Had I been aware of this limitation, I would not have purchased this DVD/VCR recorder/p;ayer. I would not recommend this recorder to anyone unless the purchaser was aware of and would choose to accept the limitation.
