Great sound, small buttons

This was used as a drop-in replacement for the stock stereo in a 2007 Nissan Xterra. The stock stereo was a single CD unit with no ability to play MP3 CDs and the sounds was terrible so it had to go. The KW-XG500 had all the features I wanted plus some. I was worried that the poor audio from the stock stereo was due to the speakers, but after installing the JVC it's obvious that wasn't the case. The only significant drawbacks I've encountered are the oddly small controls compared to the stock unit, which cause problems when I'm wearing gloves in cold weather, and the fairly short 8 character text display. But for the price I'll live with a display from the 90s if I get the extra features and audio quality.

Great value but usability issues

Pros:

Good Value

Bottom Line:

I needed to replace a failed factory radio in my Econoline van that we use for long distance deliveries in Colorado. There are no steering wheel controls in this vehicle so I was looking for a cd player/radio with easy to use controls and large buttons just like factory radios. I looked at din sized radios and thought they were all unusable, so then I looked at double dins thinking that the extra space would help. But most double dins use the space for video screens and those without video including this JVC do not use the space effectively. The specific problem that we have with this radio is that the channel seek button is coresident with a preset seek button and it is literally impossible to seek to a next station without accidently touching the preset seek button and reseting the channel on the radio. Fortunately, the radio comes with a remote control and the seek button although tiny is usable. I velcro'ed the remote to the steering wheel to make this function painless while driving, while allowing the remote to removed at times when the radio was not being used.
