I saw the JVC RX-D401S reviewed somewhere on the net as the best of the lesser-priced A/V Receivers. I certainly agree. My old receiver was a 3-year-old Pioneer that I have hated for all 3 years! It had all the bells and whistles, but none of its audio effects had much presence. The Pioneer was a much more expensive piece, but had neither crisp "highs" nor "lows".
The little JVC outperforms the Pioneer in every category. It has presence. It has "snap". It's many effects work much better than the Pioneer, and it makes my speakers sound like they're new. It's ready for the HD world and comes in a much smaller cabinet than most receivers. I'm very happy with it!
Down sides for me were the remote, the manual and subsequent learning curves. I bought a new TV, new AV Receiver and new HD Satellite Receiver/DVR all at the same time. With 3 new remotes and manuals to learn, I had that "bunny in the headlights" look on my face for a couple of weeks.
All the manufacturers tout how "universal" their remotes are. Irritatingly "semi-universal" is more like it. I have noticed that my wife's solution is to throw remotes like this at the wall until they do what she wants... Let's hear it for JVC (and Welbutrin)!
