If you are looking for a no-frills two-way radio that will work in the forest then checkout the Kenwood TK-2200LV2P Protalk. I purchased a pair and compared their capabilities to a pair of the far more common FRS/GMRS radios on a recent hunting trip in the dense forests of western Washington. The radios we had been using were common FRS/GMRS radios that are currently being sold at sporting goods stores in every city, some of which advertise a maximum range of 36 miles or more. Maybe in outer space but not in real world situations. When we lost communication with the FRS/GMRS radios we would switch over to the Kenwood TK-2200LV2P Protalk radios and resume our communications. Comparatively, FRS/GMRS radios are toys.
Pros: The Kenwood TK-2200LV2P Protalk radios are user-programmable without the need for a computer and proprietary software. Programming is done by pushing the buttons in the proper sequence and is well explained in the owner's manual. The lithium ion batteries lasted all day with juice to spare and recharging was quick. They are well built solid radios and proved to be worth the cost. Sound quality is exceptional. They cover all 5 MURS band frequencies that can be used without an FCC license.
Cons: There is no accessory battery pack available for use of AA batteries so household current must be available for recharging. The PTT button would benefit from a stronger return spring.
