Was this a gift?:

Yes

Pros:

Attractive Design, Colorful, Educational

Describe Yourself:

Grandparent

Best Uses:

Young Children, Pretend Shopping, Counting

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This was a gift for my 3 year old grandson. He loves pressing the calculator buttons and saying the numbers that appear. He also gives money to us and we pretend to buy something. We pay him the money and he gives us change. As he gets older, I can imagine him learning the value of the coins and currency, and learning to add and subtract.

My daughter had an earlier version of the Pretend and Play cash register when she was growing up, and it lasted throughout her childhood. She played with it often, incorporating it into her play shopping, particularly grocery shopping play. She's grown now, and this past week I went shopping for my nephew, who's about to turn 3. He's been playing shopping-for-groceries at home, so I wanted to get him toys to enhance his play. When I went looking, I found cash registers that looked like they wouldn't last and were too flashy. I wanted something to enhance his imagination, not take it over. With play food, I wanted realistic looking healthy whole food, and most of what I found was cheap looking and included a lot of processed foods. I did find a few viable options, but they were sets of just 6-8 fruits/vegetables. So I went online to search, and that's when I found Learning Resources and remembered my daughter had their cash register! Here at Learning Resources I found everything I was looking for, in several combination! I ended up buying this great cash register... it's solar powered (I love that!!!) and simple enough to encourage imaginative play, yet sophisticated enough for my nephew to grow with as he develops computation skills. I also bought him lots of healthy quality play food! In case you're interested, I bought him the Bushel of Veggies, the Bushel of Fruit, and the Munch It set. I'm so happy to find everything I was looking for! Customer Service: My experience with the people at Learning Resources is the main reason I'm writing this review. The staff is amazing. I called them at least half a dozen times while deciding what to get for my nephew. I had questions about everything, the products, retailers, prices, shipping, return and warranty policies, and details about ordering. I spoke to 3-4 different people on staff throughout the process, and they were all so pleasant, helpful, and patient. Every single one of them. What a pleasure! In my research for these toys, I found it was easier to shop and purchase online with Learning Resources. They have the full line of options to chose from, great service, and prices equivalent even to Amazon.com ... but with the latest edition of each product! I will shop here again!

Sadie just loves to play pretend - she makes me chicken nuggets made out of building blocks several times a week, she makes her little pretend kitchen into her own grocery store fully equipped with coupons and pretend money! She can hang out in her "store" for hours and if Steven is in the right mood he will sit and play with her too - it's so cute! Now, the only thing that her "store" has been missing is a cash register - how can people cash out without a register?! So this was a must have for us. Finding the right one though could prove to be a task, I wanted one that was not only FUN for her, but also educational. The first place I went to was Learning Resources... They actually had several to choose from, but I narrowed it down by age group and went from there. Their web-site is so easy to browse through, you can sort by: teacher/parent, age group, category, and even brand! Who is Learning Resources? Learning Resources is a leading manufacturer of innovative, hands-on educational materials for classrooms and learning toys for the home. For more than 25 years, the company has been a trusted source for educators and parents for quality, award-winning educational products. Headquartered in Vernon Hills, IL with a European office based in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England, Learning Resources markets and distributes its products in over 80 countries around the globe. Check out this adorable Calculator Cash Register... Sadie's favorite parts are that in came with the dollar bills and change, it makes a really cool cha-ching sound when you open it, and the credit card...she loves credit card! I love the fact that it requires NO BATTERIES and of course, that she enjoys it. I received the product listed above for review, all opinions are 100% my own.

A few things missing

By Momofthree from Oregon on 07/24/2009

Pros:

Durable, Attractive Design, Colorful

Gift:

Yes

Cons:

Difficult To Use

Describe Yourself:

Parent Of Two Or More Children, Education Oriented

Best Uses:

Young Children, Pretend Shopping

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

My son LOVES playing with this cash register, but it is difficult to use as a learning device. If he messes up with an amount to enter, the entire transaction must be re-entered (we have items that are labeled for sale and he enters the price in the register, then tells me how much I spent). It also allows him to enter non-cash amounts ($5.6742349857), which confuses him with the end price. I love the idea, but the key pad is a very basic calculator that has little to do with the fact he's supposed to be learning about money. I would not buy this cash register again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Excellent Learning toy

By slynns112 from Cleveland, OH on 03/04/2009

Pros:

Durable, Educational, Attractive Design, Colorful, Easy To Use

Gift:

Yes

Describe Yourself:

First Time Parent, Working Parent

Best Uses:

Counting, Pretend Shopping

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This play cash register is awesome. I bought it for my 4 yr. old daughter for Christmas. She loves it. She likes to pretend shop and buy things, or be the cashier and charge me outrageous prices on things. She doesn't understand the concept of how much things are yet, but loves the play money, and I can help her learn her money and teach her to count with it. When she is ready for the money counting hopefully the pieces will still be around. I hope they sell money refills for it. I also love that it holds real size money, and has a working calculator on it. The only bad part of it which really isn't that bad is the speed that the drawer pops out at. It flies out real quickly and sometimes loses the money out of the drawers. Other than that I would buy it all over again. It was a bit pricey, but worth it. The quality if it seems much better than the other brands that looked at in the store.
