Pros:

Easy To Program, Rugged, Lightweight, Does Float Wo Water Seep, Easy To Use, Clear Signal

Best Uses:

Families, Hunting, Emergencies, Hiking, Camping

Primary use:

Personal

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For the price it is fairly rugged, reliable, and trustworthy. It does float without water penetration for a quick drop and pickup. Batteries hold well but Lithium Ion BP would be far superior at little extra cost. AA battery option a plus. Jacks for Motorola type accsessories a plus also. Included headsets below par but useable. VOX function good. Voice scramble a plus when hunting/fishing in crowded areas.

High Power, but some problems

These are great safety tools. I know from experience that more families and groups should use them outdoors. Rangers appreciate smart campers and hikers that bring them, and some backpacking groups now require them. Someone getting lost from a group is a common reason for search and rescue. However, it seems that in their haste to hit the price point, Midland did not build the radio to withstand the high power setting for more than a few seconds. The unit overheats internally and quickly and quietly shuts off your signal about about 5 seconds, leaving your listeners baffled and frustrated. This can be solved by setting the radios to the mid-power setting (about 2 watts), but what fun is that!? (Max is 4 watts).
