At 300mm this lens is tack sharp

By Photodiver7 from Alexandria, VA, USA on 01/08/2015

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Before I bought the lens I read the reviews and especially the negative ones. Several of the reviewers complained that the lens was "soft" or "fuzzy" when extended to 300mm. As a result I tested it by photographing my cat's name tag at a distance of 43ft #13.1m#. The smallest letters are an 1/8th of an inch #4cm# and they are tack sharp. For those that got bad pictures with this lens I have several questions. Have you received any training in the proper use of telephoto lens? There are basic rules for a lens of this type. A) Don't use a shutter less than the length of the lens. On a camera with a DX sensor this lens is the equivalent of a 500mm lens on a 35mm film or FX digital camera, which means you shouldn't use a shutter speed slower than 1/500th of a second. B) Try to shoot with an aperture of no less than an f11 to ensure enough depth of field. C) Don't attempt to hand hold it when extended to 300mm. Tripod mount or Monopod mount at a minimum. It would be nice if this lens had a tripod mount, but it doesn't so we make due. One more point. This is not a fast lens. It needs plenty of light. Increase your ISO and don't plan on getting any Sasquatch pictures on a moonless night without one huge flash. Bottom line, this is an excellent lens for the money, if you have some training and/or experience using a telephoto lens.

Portable and Sharp Telephoto Zoom

By Scripps23 from San Diego, California on 11/03/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This 70-300mm zoom lens is easy to travel with and is optically excellent and affordable. The image of the Parthenon below was taken with a Nikon D700 camera body from the roof top of an open air taverna. The camera settings were the following: a shutter speed of 1/40 of a second (on a small table top tripod), an aperture of 7.1, an ISO of 6400, a focal length of 195mm, Tungsten White Balance, and Matrix Metering.

Fair Lens

By Opwe from Rockwall, TX, USA on 06/04/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good lens if you have very good quality lighting (i.e., bright sunlight). Also, images not very sharp at about 225mm thru 300mm. But it is a f4.5 - f5.6, so it is expected. I wish I would have waited a bit and got the 70-200mm f2.8. Very good point and shoot zoom lens, but I expected much better performance and sharpness. I would definitely recommend this lens as point and shoot zoom lens, but not for serious enthusiasts or pros.

Superb telephoto for budget-minded photographers

By HumblePhotog from Atlanta, GA on 05/10/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Finally had a chance to get this lens out and have been nothing but impressed with it. First of all; no, it's not on par with the faster - and vastly more expensive - telephoto lenses in Nikon's lineup in terms of clarity, sharpness, build quality, or low-light performance. It's also 1/5th the price on average and so it's really not a fair comparison to begin with. However, with that in mind, the optics and image quality are still top-notch. In fact, for a consumer-grade lens, the IQ and overall construction of the lens itself is among the best I've found in this price range. I got this lens primarily to use for my son's soccer games, where lugging around my 70-200mm 2.8G on a monopod just isn't convenient or necessary even. With ample light, the 70-300mm shines and produces surprisingly sharp images, even at the minimum and maximum focal lengths. I found that the clarity tends to degrade minimally between 200-300mm, but is still very usable. The VR II feature works and works very well. If you're hand holding, it definitely comes in handy and the difference with VR on vs. off is marked and noticeable. Given the relatively hefty weight of the lens, this feature might benefit some more than others, especially if you're not used to shooting with a lens that has a little bit of weight to it. Auto focus is fairly quick and I didn't find much hunting at 300mm, even on an overcast day. This is especially nice with the crop factor if you happen to be using a DX body, letting you reach out and get the shot without much hassle or wasted time. You can always 'help' the AF by focusing manually from the start and letting the AF take over before getting the shot, but I haven't found myself needing to do that at all. Overall, I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a quality zoom for outdoor sports, nature shots, candids, and even portraiture. Like mentioned from the start, there are better and faster lenses out there but, for this price, you really can't go wrong and won't be disappointed with the quality you'll receive for the money.

One For The Travel Bag

By PhotoMate from Kanagawa Japan on 03/17/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens is the one you want in your travel bag. If you have limited space to pack, this lens offers a great degree of versatility. It is great for landscape as at 70mm you still have plenty of view angle, but when you want to get the close up shot, the 300mm zoom capability will get you in with the subject. Very sharp detail and good light gathering capability. And for the really close up shots you will get sharp detail with amazing depth of field to work with in aperture priority. Landscape, wildlife, and close up, this lens provides a quality results.

Excellent and it works for D5000

By jamdvx from Mexico on 01/10/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use D5000 and I'm satisfied with this 300mm. Manual/Automatic, Vibration Reduction, automatic settings working good, is not the fastest focus speed but nice and enough. Beautiful photos can be gotten depending scene, objects or illumination conditions but his lens is excellent choice for general Zoom photos, the f/4.5 is not enough for low light conditions, but for most common situations and outdoors this is really a good zoom with nice price.

'Get it Tuned' for best output

By Asuspine from Pakistan on 09/14/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Its good value for money. However, make sure that there are no 'back focus' problems. In that case it wouldn't give the best output. There is a marked improvement in focusing and image sharpness after I fine tuned my Nikon D7000 for this lens. Sharpness reduces beyond 200mm.

Great Value as a lighter weight FX/DX travel zoom

By Scotishlion from San Francisco on 07/10/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This particular Nikor Zoom was purchased as a lighter weight VR Zoom as an alternative to my 3.4 lb Nikor 80mm-400mm VR for traveling to Japan and Greece, where I needed a portable and fast focusing 450mm VR end range for shooting harbor and port features from the decks of ships arriving in places like Santorini, Greece and many other lanscape subjects. The performance, handling, and cost are in balance in making this lens a good balance of function and price. The photo results rate a very good to excellent when used on the D90, D300s, D7000, D7100, and even the D600 that I currently use. The D90 has been replaced by the new D7100 for use with my D7000/D7100 as my preferred travel DSLR bodies. I have used this lens on the D600 with very satisfacory results in producing excellent 16-20 and 18-24 prints. I have recently purchased the new Nikor 70mm-200mm VR F4 to supplement the 70mm-300mm VR lens in looking for a lens with noticable optical quality improvement, NIC Coatings, and the newer VR3 system for maritime and landscape photography. However, the optical range of the 70mm-300mm VR on a DX DSLR of 105mm-450mm is very useful for my kind of work. I use this with an excellent Nikor DX 10mm-24mm wide angle zoom, an excellent Nikor 16mmm-85mm VR Zoom, and a Nikor 50G F1.8 as my travel kit with a D7000 and a D7100 or a D7000 and a smaller Coolpix 7000 for back-up and low-key night street photography. The 70mm-300mm VR is a excellent value that delivers very good-excellent results at one third of the cost of the new excellent Nikor 70-200mm VR F4 lens and one fourth to one fifth the cost of the Nikor Pro-Quality 70-200mm VR F2.8 Telephoto Zoom. These alternative Nikor VR Telephoto Zooms I own are a lot lighter, less expensive and get greater usage as a result compared to my heavy but excellent 3.4 lbs Nikor 80mm-400mm VR Zoom. I highly recommend this 70mm-300mm VR if cost, travel weight, and range are important. I believe that the next level of lens choice consideration in cost, weight, optical performance and value to consider for use on a D7100 or D600 with the greater 24 pixel sensors, is the Nikor 70mm-200mm VR F4 zoom lens or go for the Nikor 70mm-200mm F2.8 VR Pro lens if low light, bokeh are worth the trade-off in weight over the lighter travel weight and hand-held qualities of the 70-300mm VR or the 70-200mm F4 VR3 Nikor Zooms.

Outstanding Lens !

By TonySanJoseCA from San Jose, CA on 05/28/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have only two lenses at this point in time. The Nikkor 16-85 3.5-5.6 and the 70-00 4.5-5.6. I find myself continuously reaching for this lens. The lens is amazingly sharp, nice Bokeh!! Just looking through the view finder with this lens give you the feel that you are using professional quality glass. I would post some pictures here but they are severely reduced therefore you really can't see the true image quality.. Anyway, I too same as many other people doing the due dilegence research. But let me tell you now, if you are interested in this lens, don't waste your time any longer. Just go for it !!

Yes, Buy t!

By Krisanie from Mukilteo, WA, USA on 05/21/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

If you are wondering if you should buy this lens, the answer is "Yes!" With my DX format camera it has an effective range of about 105-450, which I just love, as I do a lot of nature photography. The Vibration Reduction works quietly in the background, but really shows up in stunning, crisp images. That said, for those of you who have never had a real glass lens, this one will feel heavy and you will need to learn to use your camera with the different balance. Go back to basics, support the lens with your left hand palm up, and you will be just fine. Some people might not like the extra weight, but a good photographer will just learn how to deal with it. I prefer the heavier camera/lens set, which seems to me to be easier to hold steady.

Looks and Feels GREAT, but Image focus; not so great.

By Max from Long Island NY on 05/11/2013

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

After much research I decided on the Nikon 70-300; at first, I loved it. Then I downloaded the images to my computer and the honeymoon was over. I could not live with the left side of the frame always out of focus. And I mean way out of focus. If I stop down to f22 it was better, but that is not always possible. I returned the lens ASAP.

good handling, good but not top optical performance

By AD from Italy,MILANO on 05/04/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am an old time Nikonian, I have tried it only briefly, it will take more time to write a proper and complete report. My first impression is that the lens is not bad at all but is very soft, resolution seems good for portraits but is very far from the quality of my old AI 300mm f 4.5. The comparison between a zoom and a fixed focal length is quite evident. For candids, reportage, or portrait is fine but for nature photography I think that the Nikon high end cameras could do a lot more with a better "eye".

Perfect zoo lens for crop sensor DSLR

By Berkehaus from Undisclosed on 12/12/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my "go to" lens for most animal shots and zoo pictures. The 300mm zoom really lets you get in close on an animal for a perspective that shorter lenses do not allow. The VR works flawlessly and I can shoot handheld to 1/60th sec exposure. I even use this lens for isolation shots where I want a smooth blurred background. Bokeh is silky smooth with a 9 blade round diaphragm. Usually at the zoo I use this lens as primary on a shoulder strap and then carry a 2nd body with f/1.8 35mm in the bag. Love it.

Great mid priced zoom

By Grimbot from Grimsby, ON, Canada on 11/29/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The 70-300 VR is a very good zoom lens for the money. It is very sharp from 70-200....and begins to lose sharpness after that point. Shots at 300mm are still usable, but noticeably not as sharp. This lens is great to match up with the 16-85 VR zoom for travel purposes. Lens focuses quickly and accurately. No lens creep that I have noticed. This may not be a 'legendary' performer like the 70-200 f2.8.....but it is a very capable, modestly priced zoom....that performs very well in the 70-200 range for 1/4 of the money. The 200-300 range, while a bit softer, is just a 'bonus' in terms of flexibility.

Great on the move!

By MO from Undisclosed on 10/24/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I borrowed once this lens and a D5000 from my wife, and since then I tend to leave at home heavier equipment for nature photography during long hikes. Although the lens is suitable for a FX camera, it shines on a DX up to 200mm, then looses a bit of sharpness, but still yields good results at 300mm (9x magnification on a DX). The shots are at par with the ones obtained with a D300 and a 80-400mm, which costs 3 times more, focuses much slowly and is heavier. Such a lens with a light camera should be taken very seriously, as it makes the difference to get to the right spot, in particular when there is a risk of damaging much more expensive equipment (ever tried to carry a 600mm f4 with the appropriate tripod and head through a damp?)

I bought this lens b/c I can't afford the 70-200, plus it has the extra 100mm on it and it's MUCH smaller and lighter. It's a GOOD lens, but it's not a GREAT lens. Basically, you get what you pay for. I'm overall happy with it but I wish I could afford the 70-200, which is just magical.

By Boris71 from Undisclosed on 06/14/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

With a 16mp sensor, the lens is good to 135mm, and then the image quality starts to decline . At 300mm I find it useless for my purposes when using the D7000. With a 12mp sensor the lens is good enough for most occasions. The AF is very fast though. Not instantaneous, like the 70-200 VR II, but very fast.

Great lightweight, high powered zoom lens for the serious hobbiest....

By PureLuckShot from Montana Native, professional hobbyiest and all around avid beginner ;) on 06/07/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had this lens for about two years now. Granted, it is not nearly as sharp as the higher end 70-200s...but comparing them is like comparing Porsche to Humvee. The lens is extremely light, fairly robust and has an accurate focus. On my D300s it preforms without fail. I bought this lens to take on back country backpacking trips and for basic wild life shots. For what it is (a mid range consumer lens) it is sharp, handles light fairly well within its F range and doesn't compound camera noise like a lot of zoom lenses do. Don't buy this lens if you are looking for a National Geographic lens. It is not a Pro lens. Do buy this lens if you are looking for an affordable, lightweight, dependable lens. A must for any photographer....

I Never Leave Home Without It!

By Old School Shooter from Yonkers, NY, USA on 04/17/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 is unequivocally the best modern telephoto zoom lens if you want a dedicated zoom tele with light weight and a moderate price. This lens works perfectly on all Nikon digital cameras, along with most Nikon autofocus film cameras made before 1990. This lens is a G-type lens, meaning it has no aperture ring. It won't work on any manual focus camera. The 70-300mm VR is very sharp with low distortion, an easy manual focus and a fast and accurate autofocus. The VR II, the new version of vibration reduction gives extremely sharp pictures. I've actually gone 4 stops sharper! I don't have to lug a tripod around. The autofocus is quiet and the instant manual focus is.......well, instantaneous. This lens is perfect for fast action shooting such as sports. I wouldn't use this lens for indoor or outdoor low light shooting. The 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II is much faster in low light. While the 70-300mm can be stopped down to f/32-40, my advice is don't! Diffraction will give you soft images at these f-stops. Diffraction is a softening effect similar to using a soft-focus filter or shooting through a window screen. This lens does not produce any lateral chromatic aberration (LCA) with any modern Nikon model since 2006. Distortion on DX is non-existent. With FX cameras there is moderate distortion which can be corrected with Photoshop's lens distortion filter. There is a phenomenon called falloff. Falloff occurs towards the corners of a DX frame and appears as darkened corners. While the 70-300mm has very little, I haven't seen any on my images. The 18-200mm VR by contrast has falloff at 200mm and f.5.6 on DX cameras. Falloff also occurs and maybe more noticeable on FX and film cameras. There is no vignetting with this lens, even when I stacked several filters. There typically is no problem with film cameras either with stacked filters. If any vignetting does occur with a film camera, it will be at 100mm. If you're planning on using three or more stacked filters on a film camera, check there first. There are no problems with flare and ghosting. This lens also has no problem with shadow created by a flash, even at the closest focus distance. As for sharpness, the 70-300mm is sharp at most settings. It's normal for tele zooms to have the worst distortion at the long end. It is worse at f/11, but much better at f.16. Use f/8 if you can or f/16 if you want depth of field. At f/22 and f/32 there is diffraction, as with all lenses. There is no lens that can overcome the laws of physics. In a quiet room you'll hear the VR running. It's noisy, but, this is normal. You will feel the VR system when it's working. The VR starts with a "klunk" and stops with a "klunk" after you release the shutter. Many zoom lenses tightly pack the focal lengths together at one end of the scale. The 70-300mm VR has them evenly spaced and a big-fat zoom ring that is easy to use. There is a little focus shift while simultaneously zooming. The best technique with this lens is; zoom first then focus. Of all Nikon's tele zooms the 70-300mm VR is the best compromise of size, weight, price and image quality. This lens is like the American Express card, I never leave home without it! This combination of performance, size and weight is my favorite to carry around all day.

Bottom Line:

I continue to be surprised with how well this lens does. Very pleased with how sharp it is. The VR is great. At times I have found 300mm to be a bit shorter than I had hoped, maybe Nikon will update the 80-400 (for a reasonable price), I could use the extra range. I have several other lenses that feel much more solid than this one, but so far it has held up to a lot of use.

By Pete from Will Rogers World Airport, 7100 Terminal Dr #937, Oklahoma City, OK 73159, USA on 01/18/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

traded the 70-300 for the 80-400. the 70-300 can get good shots 8 of 10 times and the 80-400 one excellent one out of 10. I can't really tell the 70-300 pics from the 18-200 pics so i believe these two have similar quality, sharpness but for the convenience of the 18-200. You get what you pay for. I recommend the 18-200 because you can do so much more, with it than the 70-300 and the quality is not enough to worry about. The 80-400 will dust the both of them 1 times out of 10, so the new lenses do focus and VR much better. the 18 to 200 seems a little more solid than the 70-300 too. the 80-400 is a metal beast, but costs 3 times as much with a 77 mm filter...

Nikkor lens AF-s VR Zoon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IFED

By AZ George from Arizona on 11/07/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Wonderful lens-I first bought the 70-300mm without VR and returned it. Could not get good quality shots and was poor in low light. This lense is wonderful for nature and action shots plus good for close up images. Very clear and I have no complaints at this time. The cost is more than the original lens without VR-however the quality and ease of use, auto focus is worth it.

Good lens at twice the price

By Corkring from WV on 11/07/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Lens has proven to be sharp and quick focusing. Some center softness, but not excessive. Vibration control is amazing and welcome at the longer focal lengths. Would not hesitate to purchase again. In fact the reason I chose Nikon over the other big brand was the lens costs on comparable products. Good job Nikon on producing an affordable ultimately usable lens!

Not sharp above 250mm or so...

By Nikon_D80 from Carmel, Maine, U.S.A. on 09/27/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Not sharp above 250mm or so If you need to use the range of about 250mm to 300mm, and you need it to be sharp at 100 percent magnification, you'll be disappointed. I tried both manual and auto focus but couldn't get sharp shots at the full 300mm. I called a large rental & camera store and they said their rental 70-300 VR is the same way.

re-discovered how great this lens is

By Ray from California on 09/02/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I took out my 70-300 VR to take shots with my D7000 of our first varsity tennis match of the season. I was blown away by the color, contrast, and sharpness (except at 220-300mm). But even if it's clearly soft at the farther range, at least I will still get reasonable shots that the point-and-shoot crowd can appreciate. I was ready to sell this lens to replace it with the FAR heavier and costlier 70-200 vrII, but I'm coming to realize that other than losing some of the improved low-light shooting and bokeh, this 70-300 VR compares extremely well with the 70-200 VRII with the GIGANTIC advantage of portability. There is practically no meaningful bokeh with the 70-300 since everything is in focus all the time with the small apertures you have to use, it might end up being the only reason I end up getting a faster lens. truly an amazing lens for it's consumer (non-pro) designation. the low weight and low price is simply amazing too, considering the picture quality it is capable of producing.

Nice lens!!!

By pauld from Newark on 08/29/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a very nice lens for its price. I have used this lens with my Nikon D5100 and good some amazing shots. This lens is very good for taking pictures in bright/ decent light conditions. The picture quality is not very appealing in the low light conditions. This is also a very heavy lens, which makes it a little annoying sometimes, especially if you have to walk/carry it for a long time. The image stabilization feature is AWESOME and the auto-focus is indeed very quick and impressive. I would recommend a tripod when using this lens, especially when you are at higher focal lengths (between 200 and 300 mm).

I really like this lens ...

By NikonneCT from Undisclosed on 08/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I really like this lens for nature and wildlife photos. It is solid, sharp and bright, despite its relatively small maximum aperture. I especially like the VR feature, which allows for hand-held photos down to 1/125th. For the price, I think this is a fine lens. Can't wait to use it to shoot my grandchildren's sports events.

Heavy Lens

By Rub from california on 08/09/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens is too heavy than my camera's body. Its not good for a walk around lens. The zoom is great for further reach though. The pics I took were not as sharp as I am expecting it to be. This one is a bit pricey. Auto focus is really slow.

I purchased this 70-300 lens about 1 month ago, ever since i can't stop using it. It really does the job for zoom photography. This lens replaced my 55-200 VR lens because of it vast amount of coverage. I love this lens. It's a great lens for people who are looking for that extra zoom without spending thousands of dollars. Great quality photos at an affordable price.

I bought this lenses more than a year ago. I couldn't make up my mind whether take 55-300, or 70-200. I bought 70-300 mm and I'm really happy with it. I've recently shoot a wedding and I've been travelling a lot through this year and I couldn't ask for anything better- well probably it could have lower f/. But with this price... The overall quality is great! Buy it! Do not hesitate.

Great lens, priced right

By Mike A from Undisclosed on 04/29/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I originally looked at the 70-200 but it didn't fit my budget. I had the opporutnity to use/test this lens at work prior to my purchase. after trying it out, I decided, for now, I didn't need to spend the extra money on the 70-200. I bought this lens and have been very happy with my decision. I've used it for surveillance and sports photography. The autofocus is fast, and the vibration reduction is outstanding. The only thing I wish it had was a wider aperature.

Great Economical Zoom

By RedRaider from Undisclosed on 04/23/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have owned this lens for over two years, for use on my D90. For the money, you simply can not touch this lens. One of the rare consumer lenses that acts like a pro lens. For outside sports, this lens is great. Indoors, it's a tad slow. I will be upgrading to the Nikkor 70-200mm F/2.8 VRII soon, since I am in need of a faster lens for shooting indoor sports.

Great lens

By Harold from Undisclosed on 04/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this lens approximately three years ago to replace my Nikon 75-300 AF. I believe this is the best consumer zoom lens on the market. color and contrast are great and VR allows me to get great pictures without tripod, although in certain situations a tripod is necessary with any lens. I use this lens for wildlife and some portraits.

Excellent

By Smokey from Lodi, CA on 04/19/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Close up photos without having to be right next to the subject. I had taken many pictures with the 200 that just would not be able to zoom in enough on wildlife or the kids (yes more wildlife). While I am sure there are other lenses that will provide even superior close up this one is great for me. I am not a professional photographer so this was an easy alternative to the lenses in the $X,xxx price range and with a polarizing filter, I could not be happier. This lens is a must have for me.

Good lens on D90

By Ther McKenzie Kid from Eugene, OR on 04/18/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been very happy with this lens. Overall, I would say the performance of this lens is a little superior to Nikon's 18-200mm, which is the gold standard in consumer lenses. It has a pleasing bokeh that helps isolate subjects, and the VR allows you to make some remarkable handheld shots.

Great lens!

By Lucas from Somerset, PA on 04/18/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I'm not a very technical reviewer but cannot speak highly enough of this lens. I shoot with a d5000 and have used the 70-300 at a number of events (include indoor concerts, action shots, and landscapes) with great success. Even with the limited aperture range of 4.5 - 5.6 I was able to get great shoots at a recent indoor concert in aperture priority mode without a flash. I also took some photos of my son's first swimming "lesson" (he's 8 months) last week and am wildly pleased. The only real downside I've found is that the lens looks slightly disproportionate mounted on the d5000 body. However... that's not really a negative as far as I'm concerned. If you are a hobbyist or casual shooter looking for a reasonably priced telephoto lens I strongly recommend this one.

Great Starter Zoom Lens

By shelley from Colorado on 04/18/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This was the first lens I bought and I am very much pleased with the product. I take it everywhere I go. It is an awesome lens for shooting birds within 20-30 feet and for great zoom power. I have however sent my lens into Nikon while under warranty for repair. There was a minor part loose in the lens compartment that controls focusing. Nikon quickly repaired my lens and sent it to my doorstep within 2 weeks after mailing. Overall, this is a great lens for those who dont want to spend too much money, but have the ability to take awesome up close pictures. I must admit that the quality of the lens could be more durable (considering mine had a loose part in under a year).

Good lens for mid to close wildlife photography

By BB02 from Price, utah on 04/17/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use my Nikkor 70 to 300 mm AF VR lens primarily for wildlife photography and action shots. it is also good for human portraits in the out of doors. It is a good lightweight lens that takes good photos of wildlife within 50 meters. It is much easier to carry and use than the 500 mm fixed focal length lens, but the larger lens produces much more detailed pictures. However, for most users, I recommend the 70 to 300 based on its versatility and ease of use.

This is one or three lenses that I own made by Nikon. This is a 70-300 mm I also own a 50-500 mm and 55 x 70 mm all are AF-VR Zoom models. The 70-300 mm is the most versatile lens in my collection. I've got some great wildlife shot with it including a Hawk in-flight, a Bobcat with a fresh kill in his mouth, and a bird with her chicks in the nest. Vibration reduction on this lens is exceptional and has always performed flawlessly. I would recommend this lens to anybody looking for a medium-range telephoto lens.

The optical quality of the lens is very good. But I had already repaired this lens three times because of autofocus problem. It was sent by repair facility to Nikon for repair, but it did not change a bit. Autofocus still does not work properly. I have this product for about 4 years and after three years the lens was in repair three times already. I would not recommend this product to a friend. I take this lens everywhere!

By Charley from Sacramento, CA on 04/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this lens to replace the 55-200 that I originally purchased with my camera. That lens disappointed me severely--terrible vignetting. But the 70-300 has been a dream. I use it for wildlife especially, but also pull it out for landscape details, concert performances, and other fun things. I still think of the VR as a minor miracle. It has allowed me to get hand-held shots in lighting conditions and focal lengths that my training says should be impossible. (Okay, it's not a total miracle until they can come up with VR that also makes the animal I'm photographing freeze!) The lens is compact and solid. This is the second most likely lens you'll see mounted on my camera.

I use this lens when I need to get close to my subject or for distance shots. The VR works very well and focus is quick and accurate. Great Value

By BrianS from Concord, CA on 04/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is one of Nikon's best values. While it may not rival the 70-200 for sharpness, it's as good as it gets in it's range. The VRII lets you take rock-steady shots at 300mm hand held and the lens is light enough to carry on the street all day long. Without the hood (which is included) it is unassuming so you can get your shots without attracting a lot of attention. The small f/4.5-5.6 aperture means autofocus works best in daylight. There is little bad to say about this lens. I've enjoyed mine for three years. It's always in my kit. I gave 70-300VR 4 stars (not 5) because I haven't found the perfect lens yet.

By Cameraman from Undisclosed on 04/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this lens exclusively for outdoor nature shots and it has been a great addition to my lenses. It's very sharp and it focuses fast in good light. I've used it to take pictures of numerous animals from 50-300 yards and the quality of the photos has been great (assuming I do my part). In my opinion, it's not made for use as an every-day carry lens such as the 18-200mm VR but the additional zoom it provides was what I was looking for. Overall very happy. Easily my favorite lens even though it's only on my camera maybe 20% of the time.

The focusing mechanism is internal, and it has active VR. If you're looking at the cheaper DX version of this lens, I think its the 55-300 vr, don't waste your time. I tried both and this lens is far superior. I use a Nikon D3100 and this FX lens works incredibly well.

In the past few years ...

By utahred from Southern Utah on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

In the past few years I've taken thousands of photos with three different Nikon digital cameras and a variety of lenses. However, I've never been satisfied with image quality, images seemed fuzzy, maybe a bit out of focus. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong, but I always felt they should be closer to what I rememberd seeing in nature, even at the lower resolution of computer monitors. Then, my son and I went to the April 1st Denver Rockies season opener . I've not had much experience photographing baseball games so I decided to try the AF-S 70-300 Nikor. A lens that's been in my bag for a while, but not used much. Back home I uploaded the images, hoping to find a few keepers. What a pleasant surprise I had. Many of the shots were equal to or better than any I have ever taken. The images were crisp and detailed enough even for my finicky demands, and 100% crops are amazing. The Rockies have a reporter Alanna Rizzo mixing with fans before and during games. She was in our section about 50 feet away, schmoozing with fans, so I took a few shots. The results were really surprising. At 100%, the image was detailed, down to minor facial blemishes and even peach fuzz; with no shaping or adjustments of any kind, these are really great shots. Spring has sprung here in Southern Utah and I'll be out searching for wild flowers next month, and, this year there's no question which lens will be on my Nikon D500.

Nikon needs to get on the bandwagon

By Joe from Undisclosed on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have purchased Nikkor lens, and also third party lens. I feels Nikon needs to lower there price because they are not that much better, who are you kidding. Other companies develop new products, and Nikon comes along with something similar a couple years later. So get of your duff, and get out front to develop things that others do not have, then you can have an excuse to charge those big prices for stuff that others do not have.

For what the lenses does in the daytime, not too bad for the $$$. Dusk, you need a tripod. Build is quality plastic, lightweight and sturdy. I would only recommend this lense for personal use.

Refurbished Lens

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I took a chance with a refurbished lens, 70 to 300 and have been very pleased. I've recommended refurbished lens, by Nikon, to the digital photography classmates. The 70 - 300 is a great lens, very responsive and light in weight for such a powerful lens.

Nice, Nice lens

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A very nice lens, with the ability to zoom a long ways and have the picture stay stable without using a tripod, also the vast majority of pictures taken while in a moving vehicle, turn out beautiful with less than 10% being affected by too much movement.

This lens is a great birding lens on a DX camera.

By hjb from Ann Arbor, Mi on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I first used the 70-300mm vr lens on my nikon D200 for hand held birding. While its equivalent to a 450 mm lens I had on many occasions had to crop the original images. This was some what unsuccessful do to the image sensor of the D200. I have been using a new D7000 with a much larger and better quality sensor. Now I have an ideal combination for hand held birding. The lens is very sharp and the crops are high quality. Its a very fine lens that I highly recommend.

Excellent Lens But A Little Heavy

By AvonPhotoMan from Avon, CT on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I shoot a Nikon D3100 with the great 18-55 kit lens and was looking to increase the focal range. I was considering the 55-200 and the 70-300, read all the reviews of each, and wound up with the 70-300. It has lived up to all my expectations. It focuses quickly and provides very sharp pictures. I like the extra reach between 200 and 300. It is not great in low light but I can handle that by bumping up the ISO with no loss of picture quality. It is heavier than the camera and the 18-55, but with the VR feature I have been able to do just fine without a tripod. I am very pleased with this lens and recommend it without any hesitation.

Excellent product

By Joshdbr from Stevensville, Montana on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an excellent lens for either sports or wildlife photography. It has very fast autofocus and good tracking. If there is enough light it will track birds in flight easily. I would highly recommend this product, and depending on it's use, even over something like a 70-200 2.8. The 70-300 has several features in it's favor, the main one being weight, and also size, and the additional 100mm.

Great zoom for hiking

By Whispers from Ontario, Canada on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a fantastic lens for hikes. The VR works flawlessly and it is not an overly large or heavy lens on a medium sized body. Very sharp up to 20mm and I still have no issues using it at 30mm wide open if I have to. Better if you stop it down to f8 though. Excellent from 70-200mm and very good out to 300mm. I have also used it for occasional portraits and it performs well.

Great Lens at Great price

By N1DQU from Pittsfield, Ma. on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a great lens at a super price. I recieved mine as part of kit from Best Buy with my D90 and 18-105mm VR kit. Purchased 2 years ago and this lens has never let me down. I use it 50% of the time as my walkaround lens. Has excellent reach. And does great close-up shots too. I believe much better buy than 80-200mm VR. Pair with 16-85mm VR and second body you'll have 90% of the range you will ever need. Will let you know when My D7000 & 16-85mm Vr arrive next month.

zoom lens

By nikononly from LA, CA on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

this is a great all around zoom lens. my daughter's favorite telephoto zoom. i also have the 70-200, 2.8, but this lense is better in most cases, because it's much lighter and zooms out further. if you want one telephoto zoom, get this one. it's good for 80% of your shots. takes shots as sharp as the 70-200, without the added weight. the only thing you won't get, is the lower light capability and bokeh, but it's still great for 80% of your shots.

Nice zoom lens

By bc from Philadelphia, PA on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My only complaint about the lens is the maximum aperture. f4.5 is just not fast enough for all the uses I can find for this lens. The image quality, however, is superb, and in lighting conditions where the aperture isn't an issue, the lens works like a dream. It's especially useful for nature shots.

From 70-230mm this lens is terrific. Sharpness drops off a little at the far end of the zoom, but is still quite acceptable. The VR works beautifully, and this is fairly compact and light weight compared to the much more expensive alternatives. I'm very happy with this lens.

Fast focus, excellent images, great price

By SDW1031 from Philadelphia on 03/31/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I really like this 70-300 VR II lens a lot. I am an avid enthusiast and have a Nikon D60 and basically traded up from the 55-200 to this lens so I could get the additional 100mm focal length. Though I have not had it that long it is exactly what I was hoping I would get without breaking the bank. Unlike some others, I have not experienced any issues with focus at any range on the lens. In fact, Nikon promotes all ranges at as close to 4.9 feet and I can attest I have accomplished that, in fact, possibly a little bit closer. The quality of the images is great, though, I must admit, near that 300 range with some shots I do need my tripod, despite the VR feature. Not always, but sometimes as the VR feature is a definite plus for this unit. The silent wave motor operates fairly quietly and pretty quick allowing me to capture images that might have gotten away with a slower focus lens. I appreciate the construction. Maybe a bit heavy but I will not complain about that with all the benefits this piece of glass offers, especially for the money. I would recommend this to anyone who has a 55-200 and wants more capacity or for anyone who has the non VR.

Superb lens

By Murph from San Antonio on 01/03/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I needed a lens to go on my camera to shoot my daughters soccer games. My 80-400mm was too slow focusing for 10 year olds, my 70-200mm not long enough at times, and so my wife graciously allowed me to purchase this lens. This is one of the sharpest, fastest focusing lenses I own. Perfect for kids soccer, it delivered many a photo for Mom and the grandparents. Moose Peterson suggested this as a keeper lens, and he was right. On either my D2X or D700, this lens performs, performs well, and brings home the photos. Lightweight, rugged, and sharp. My only complaint was there are times I wish it was a constant f/4 lens.

I matched this lens with the 16-85VR to keep the camera bag weight down & offer a broad range of photo opportunities; also useful with a short extension tube. One negative comment I have: this lens could benefit from a tripod base mount enabling rotation from horizontal to vertical without loosing my composition for close-ups or distance landscapes.

I bought this lens about 6-weeks ago for my D90. I've used it mostly for nature shots & sports. It focuses very, very quickly. I've had one or two instances where the lens hesitated in focusing, that was when it was last set at the close-up focus & I swung to a distant (infinity) focus point. I've taken quick grab shots of birds flying overhead an had unbelieveable results. And the vibration reduction does a wonderful job. I've taken excellant moon shots at 1/125 sec. hand held with no camara shake. I'm very satisfied with this lens.

An excellent all around lens. Great for daytime sports venues if your a photographer who likes to move around quickly to capture the action without a tripod, light weight makes it easy run down the side lines with and to get the camera up to shooting position quickly. Long reach of the lens allows for full coverage of the field from any position. Limited in low light conditions but not the fault of the lens, its just not built for those situations. Also have had very good results with nature photography, it's light weight allows you to follow the subject easily. VR has produced excellent results for me, thousands of action photo's with consistant performance.

Forget Dusk or Dawn Shooting

By fotomaker from Florida on 08/05/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is sold as a 300mm but I found anything beyond 230mm in AF in a low lite situation to be unacceptable. Any shot in that +200mm area that has a subject in shadowed or shaded area will not be clear let alone trying to capture a bird in flight. I was sent it to Nikon for inspection; no info was returned as to what was done or found wrong....just the lens in a new box. One would be better to buy 200mm zoom than have this 300mm. Others specs are above average when used on a D40 and D200.

Very good

By phil from Ohio on 08/05/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought sight unseen so I didn't know what to expect. I had hoped it would make something 150' away, close enoough to "touch": Not so. Learned a valuable lesson. Try it first so you're not surprised before you buy. Once I got realistic, was very happy. Allows you to get close enough to most animals (the ones that don't bite). Some have complained about varied types of problems with it. I have had no trouble and really enjoy it. Stabalizer works great. Followed hawks in the sky and it did a terrific job. I

EXCELLENT LENS WITH SUPERB RANGE AND SHARPNESS

By bicycling4ever from San Francisco, CA on 08/04/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent lens to have as a solo and definitely as a second lens in the bag. When out and about on random photo outings this lens has come in handy in several occassions for taking candid shots of interesting people and nature from afar. I bought this along with the D90 kit lens which I now barely use. Can't say enough about the versatility and quality of this lens.

Great lens for just about anyone.

By John from San Diego on 08/02/2010

Bottom Line:

I just got back from a trip to Alaska and the lens was critical to my needs. Optical performance was excellent wide open to about 250mm and and excellent beyond that when simply stopped down one stop. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

Love this lens, does what I want it to do.

By PhotoJoe from Southern California on 08/02/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am an old film F3 photographer. When I finally gave up and switched to digital I purchased a D60 body, this lens and an 18-55 mm lens. I do mostly wildlife photography. I love this lens. I've almost completely stopped using my old 500 mm lens with a tripod and have switched to hand holding this 70-300. I am not a pro. The results I get are easily up most pro standards. The images are sharp, colors good, and the results are constantly receiving compliments.

Good lens

By willied from Columbus GA on 08/02/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have two of these lense (one was stolen so i repurchased, then recovered the other). One works well and i think one has a problem with the VR system. Some pictures are blurry and others are great. I take a lot of action/soccer shots and i don't seem to get the clarity from this lens, compared to the 135 and the 200mm zoom. good lens for the price, but would like a little better from Nikon. Maybe the lens is damaged?

This lens has come in handy more than I was expecting it too. It has quick autofocus (enough for me to catch birds in flight) and the VR is superb. Only complaint is that it is noticeably less sharp from about 250mm to 300mm.

Sharp pictures every time with the vr 70-300mm, I had the 55-200mm but had to upgrade because i shoot mostly sporting events and do not regret one minute of this investment, the vr is a must feature for any lens but this particular lens for the cost is as close to professional as it gets. Very pleased, will recommend!

very poor image quality

By FRA1 from Newforndland Canada on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I've had this lense for almost a year and use it with my D90 or should say have used it now it mostly sits in my bag, the image quality with this lens is terrible unless your at the minimum focus distance even at around 35 feet or less the image quality is awful it's always noisy or out of focus even when using a tripod, I sent this lense back to Nikon in Ontario Canada and it was shipped back as in good working order so I guess Nikon messed up on this one unlike my other nikon lenses which are all excelent.

I bought this lens because I could not afford the 70-200 and actually the lens is very good and you get the added 100mm. This lens is not heavy, focus is fast and is easy to use. I use it for architectural detail shots, landscape, nature and sports. The VR works as designed and is priced right!

Bottom Line:

I don't like long reviews and I don't like to write them. To the point I don't know how to beat this, it is light weight, excellent quality even wide open and with VR it is the first 300mm I could easily hand hold even at very slow shutter speeds. I use it a lot for flower close-ups and it does wonders at f8 and 5.6 @300mm. It is with me most of the time.

Great entry telephoto

By PhotoGuy from Undisclosed on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Granted this is an entry level lens, but I have found it to be quite capable. Good clear, crisp images just like you expect from Nikkor lenses. One great feature is the Active focus mode which continually refocuses the lens. It's great for photographing moving objects like flying birds. It's also fairly compact so can easily trek about with it in a medium sized camera.

My Greatest Lens ever

By Moto from Charlottesville, Va. on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Out of my 3 nikon lens, this is the one that stays on my camera 95% of the time. I can only say great things about it. I have had other brand 300 zooms before but nothing even close to my nikon. Clear as can be at all ranges. It has even replaced my need to be reaching for my Micro lens sometimes. Min focus distance is 7 ft, however when zooming to 300mm at 7 ft, you can capture some stunning photos of insects, ect.

Surprisingly sharp

By MeplatHammerhead from Centralia, WA on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the Nikon 70-300mm VR Zoom so that I would have an alternative to the excellent, but heavy 70-200 f2.8 VR Zoom. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 70-300mm VR Zoom rivals the 70-200mm f2.8 VR Zoom for sharpness, in a much smaller and easier to carry package. Focus is fast and accurate and, as long as the light levels are reasonable, I find no reason to use the much heavier pro zoom for anything other than location shooting. This is the bargin of the century, and works on both Nikon's DX and FX lenses. Bravo!

Supurb lens in its range

By Tahoe John from Undisclosed on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love shooting with this lens and find many ways to use it. It works well on larger animals at a moderate distance. It is a little short for good bird photogaphy. I like to use it in canyons where you don't have the need for a wide view. It picks up some of the forground details without having to deal with some junk at your feet.

Sharp images, but with compatibility issues

By Dameon from Tobermory, Ontario, Canada on 07/31/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

After using this lens for about three months now, I find it to be well worth the price - the VRII is helpful when shooting in low light or without a tripod. The image quality is superior to many other lenses I have used (but this is the first "Digital" one I've ever owned so can't make a direct comparison.) It is a good "walking around" lens, but I miss the wider angle options, finding the 70mm short end to be a bit too long for many 'snapshot' moments of people. My only real complaint is that when coupling this lens with my old teleconverter or extension macro tubes, my D300s's light meter does not work, requiring some guesswork to get a good exposure.

Third time's the charm...

By dhenry from Paris, France on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens is very sharp, and the stabilization is impressively effective. The only drawback is that the VR drains the battery so quickly, but it's worth it. The only thing I don't like is the curved diaphragm blades. I often read in photo that curved diaphragm blades give a better transition between sharp and out of focus, but I don't buy it. I have lenses with straight diaphragm blades and some things out of focus behind the subject take on beautiful octagonal shapes, like you see in movies, and there's no problem with transitions between sharp and out of focus, even on a digital camera, my D90.

Good zoom lens

By Mike in AZ from Arizona on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this lens to replace my older 70-200 zoom lens. I wanted a longer focal length AND image stabilization on my D70 DSLR. The 70-300 VR lens meets those requirements. Even though it is not a fast lens, images taken at sunset (with ISO 800-1000) of wildlife are surprisingly good, so the VR works well. I also use the lens for piggyback astrophotography using exposures up to 15 minutes (VR off). Results have been very nice.

Sub-par lens

By Nikonbird from Peru on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I am very disappointed with this lens. I bought it for bird photography and I find that 1) the quality of the photos is so so, 2) the lens itself plus the camera are so heavy that I frequently end up with shoulder pain after a day of shooting 3) very difficult to take good photos in less than full sunshine as it is difficult to hold the lens firmly. Definitely would need a monopod and even then, the photos would not be so high quality as the lens itself is not great.

A wonderful lens for little money

By Nature Shooter from Salina, Kansas on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

I bought the 70-300 AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor IF with my D5000 and haven't looked back. I have used it for the last two weeks almost daily and love the pictures I get. I have sent photo's to all my friends, of the birds etc. I have taken with the outfit and they agree that it is a wonderful lens. In low light it has some blur at the 300mm setting as would be expected, but in good light it is wonderfully clear. I wouldn't trade it for any other lens I have owned. I am well satisfied.

My bird photos are improving

By Barbara from California on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this lens in my quest to photograph birds. Since I am in the field walking around with binoculars, bird book, etc. I cannot carry a big heavy lens and tripod. Because of the VR feature I have been able to photograph birds at quite a distance and crop them to a fairly clear image. I do not get the quality I would get with a huge lens but it is a good compromise for my purpose, And it is definitely better than using a point-and-shoot camera!

I gave this lens a test this spring when we discovered a huge rookery in Florida and could get very close to several species of birds. The lens worked extremely well and the continuous focus mode worked as advertised. The images on my large screen computer were stunning under all lighting conditions. The only downside: The VR function doesn't seem to provide the benefits I had hoped given the relative slowness of the lens.

Great Value!

By tcbphoto from Undisclosed on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this lens to replace an older 75-300 Nikkor lens. It has proven to be a great lens for the price. I have handheld the lens on my D80 body in dusk shadow conditions with good results. It is a bargain for the price for those of us that can not justify the cost of the larger lenses. The VR function is more than adequate for many situations, but a tripod is still needed in low light situations and to ensure the sharpest photo possible. I am very satisfied with the sharpness and functionalitly of this lens.

Best Value

By Brian from Concord, CA on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The 70-300 VR is one of Nikon's best values. This lens really works for you: VRII makes 300mm shots rock solid hand-held, clarity is wonderful, and the weight is just right for a lens this size. Sharpness is best from 70-200mm but very good to 300mm. This lens is not quite as sharp as the 70-200 VR (at twice the price) but is very close. I have owned the 70-300 VR for 3 years and it is always in my kit and on my camera. If you'r e a casual nature photographer this lens is most fun you can find anywhere.

Quality Lens

By nospinguy from Hernando, FL on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I'm a 68 year old man who was introduced to photography when my wife bought me a Nikon D5000 with a 18-55mm kit lens last Christmas. I did not have any experience with DSLR cameras, so this review will be strictly for folks like me. The Nikon 70-300mm VR II lens is a quality-built lens. It does not look or feel cheap. It has a metal mount and a rubber ring. I found the focus to be fast & accurate throughout the full range of the lens. The Bokeh is very good & pleasing. The images are very sharp with a very slight drop off past 200mm - not enough to knock the lens. Vibration Reduction II is excellent. It has 2 modes - Normal & Active which can be activated by a switch on the side of the lens. The color of the exposures are very good. The lens weighs 26.3 oz - a little on the heavy side. I have used this lens for portraits & nature shots. I was very pleased with my photos. One photo of a dragonfly clearly showed the wing structure. I am happy with my purchase. I would recommend buying it.

Small and light weight for a person on the go

By Safari guide from Ridgway, CO on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I lead safaris primarily to Africa but also South America and Australia. I have to travel light because of weight limitations on bush planes and space limitations on Landrovers. I have taken thousands of pictures with this lense and have had little to no problems with it. Many were taken from a vehicle plodding across open ground. The VR functioned surprisingly well. I use a larger lense when traveling alone and having time to set up for that perfect picture but I found the AF-S 70-300 to be the perfect lense for traveling light and where you often have to whip it out quickly to get that special shot of animals in a great setting. Would highly recommend for the person on the go that does not want to fool with a larger or more complicated lense.

The BEST lens of ALL of them!

By NikonEnthusiast from Manchester, CT on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've used my Nikon AF lenses over the years but none, including the Pro f/2.8 models can compare to this versatile 70-300 mm VR lens! Used hand held (due to the magnificent VR for image stabilization) OR on a monopod, this lens out performs others costing 3 times the price! Because it focuses down to under 6 feet, with the equivalent crop factor of 1.5x on my D90 yielding an apparent focal length of 450 mm, it works as an amazing macro lens, too! My butterfly shots have never been so full of action before. I leave it set at f/9 with Aperture Priority and Auto ISO set to 1600 max and get tack sharp images! For shooting people, I find that if I leave the lens shade off it is far less intimidating and I get ultra close, intimate shots while maintaining my distance for great candid photographs. If I had to choose only one lens, this would be it! Eventually, when I move up to full frame, this lens will come with me, too! Jay Maisel raves about this lens. And he's right!

Good zoom lens, for the price

By Nikko from Minnesota on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've enjoyed using this lens. It's got a beautiful DOF and the 300mm zoom is wonderful. But it refuses to have a clear image if I put a filter on it. I've tried UV filters, polarizers, ND filters, even just a lens protection filter, and it would refuse to show a clear photo. What happens is that it shows doubles of everything, as if you were slightly cross-eyed. Kind of a weird fluke. Wonder if I just received a flawed lens, or if this is the case with everyone's version of this lens.

To Soft

By NikonShooter from Jacksonville, AR on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I purchased this lense to do basic phtoographic work such as sporting events and wildlife shooting. The lense is very soft across the board. I have contacted Nikon on three occasions and they indicated that there was nothing that could be done to sharpen the image. The VR system works well and I use it often. My only complaint is the soft focus. I do not need a fast lense for what I shoot, but I do need my images to be crisp and in focus. I shoot in bright sunlight and some shade areas in the woods but a standard lense should work fine in these settings. If you are looking for a crisp image this is not the lense for you. This has been the first Nikon Lense that I have been disappointed with. I use it on my D300, D90 and D60 and have the same results. On the plus side, it focuses fast, very quite and smooth.

I don't agree with some that this lens is soft at 200/300 range. My many years of pro film shooting prepared me quite well before moving to the Nikon Digital System.I find no problem in shooting motor sports, airshows, baseball games etc.Learn the equipment before critsizing it. No I am not a Nikon employee. But I know quality and how to make it work for me.

I purchased this lens to use at a road course race, mostly due to the expanse of the track and what I could cover from where I was. I was thrilled with the results I had. Good companion to my 55-200. Hope someday to be able to afford the top shelf lenses.

worth the cost

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

got this lens with my d90. don't know much about the upper end lenses, but i do know this lens isn't half bad. the 200-300 range is hard to get a really sharp focus and as you've already read by others it does have mild issues with light capture. it is an f4.5/5.6 and that's what you'll get. it has smooth opperation and somewhat fast autofocus.not the right lens for far off shots like i hoped (focus issue above), but if you want a full frame shot of a subject that's maybe 50-100 ft away that's where this lens works the best for me. for the price the quality falls about right so if your looking in this price range you will only get so much just be sure you consider your purpose for this lens. lens is ok for 300ft shots. good for 150ft shots. great for 75ft shots.

Reasonable lens for the price

By Live Free from USA on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this lens mainly for use shooting large wildlife (bears are not the safest to get close with!!!) and occasional sports. For the price, it is a reasonable performer, but it does require good lighting conditions. It's very lightweight and easy to carry as a second lens, but at maximum zoom it tends to lack sharp focus. It's low price becomes evident when used alongside any faster zoom. I prefer my 220mm f3.5 Soligor whenever sharpness is paramount. The VR function is overrated in my opinion and I recommend using a tripod.

Good value lens.

By Clickster from New Fairfield, CT on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Amateur photographer who needed a lens for distance shooting at family events (e.g. Kids swim meets) found this lens to be just right. I agree with prior reviewers that it's not the best in low light but outdoor shooting is very high quality considering the price point. I found the 200mm lens to not have enough range whereas the 300 is perfecto. Works well with my D5000 and the VR option helps immensely. Manually focusing is quick and precise once you find the focus ring but that's not easy initially. Sturdy lens comes with padded sack and back cover but no front lens cover. Coupled with my 18-55mm lens the pair makes for good lens options through most of the shooting situations that an amateur would find themselves in, just a little better outdoors, than in.

Excellent lens for the price!

By NikonDave from New Orleans, USA on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens is an excellent bargain! The AF speed is great and accurate, the VR works wonders if you use it as directed, the bokeh is beautiful andit is SO light! Did I mention that it is a bargain? No, it's not as sharp or fast as the dedicated telephotos or the more expensive tele-zooms, it is a bit soft at the edges at 300mm, and the focus distance at 70mm is a bit longer than ideal. But the softness at 300mm is nothing that you cannot correct in post processing and for closer focus distance you should probably used a macro lens anyway. The positives of this lens far outweigh the negaitves, and the advantage of being able to carry this lens everywhere you go will make it more useful than your dedicated telephotos (which weigh almost as much as their price). You should definitely buy this lens as an all purpose tele-zoom. You won't be dissapointed!

Good lens from moving vehicle

By Faster from Boca Raton, FL on 07/30/2010

For it's size and weight a very good all around lens. The stabilization from a moving vehicle was excellent while shooting moving animals. Zoom excellent through most of range, except at top.

Well balanced lens

By Whidbeypix from Whidbey Island, Washington on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens represents an outstanding balance of focal length range, image quality, size/weight and cost. I'm using it on a D700, primarily for landscapes. From 70mm to 250mm it is reliably sharp if I stick to f9-13. Under optimum conditions it produces absolutely usable pictures out to 300mm. As a rule I keep VR turned off, but it is useful and effective as an alternative to cranking up ISO. I have used this for a marathon and it did an excellent job in tracking subjects and sharp images. In the past (with a D200 and D300) I've used the 70-200VR, another brand 70-200 and a 300mm f4. This 70-300 meets my requirements for optical quality and convenience since I shoot with a three-lens kit: 70-300mm, 14-24mm, AF-S 24-85mm f3.5-4.5G.

Great long range walk around lens

By BW from Olympia, WA on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this lens to compliment my 18mm-200mm Nikor lens. It is everything I was looking for. I am a beginner at this SLR thing and take primarily pictures of the grand kids at the games and swimming and a few wildlife shots. The 18-200 was not bringing everything quite as close as I wanted but couldn't afford the big bucks for the high end lenses. This worked out great. Not too heavy, the pictures that I want turn out just fine, much better than my old point and shoot. It is quick, clear and easy to use. I even liked the price. The only problem I have now is knowing which lens to put on when I leave the house. They are both great lenses.

Great optic esp. considering cost

By Nick Or from Undisclosed on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great lens which I use w/ my D70. I'd recommend it for any purpose calling for that zoom range. I recently used it at a bird migration, and seemed to be able to focus closer than some folks using 300 2.8s, 400 2.8s and the like. I used my SB-800 and was able to reach effectively into the leaf cover to photograph warblers.

Fabulous lens for the price

By JM from Stratford, NJ on 07/30/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was looking at the 70-200 F2.8 but could not justify the price for use on my D300 and D700. Granted, this lens won't be used indoors for any weddings, but outdoors, it hums and produces gorgeous images. I've only owned it for three weeks as I purchased it to photograph a Rolex GrandAm Racing event. I am so glad I purchased it! I was initially going to return it but it performed so well I'm keeping it. The sharpness, contrast, and zooming performance is really sweet. Not too heavy either which is a big plus when you are walking around a 1.8 mile circuit on the other side of the armco barrier and no way to get back to the main course. For flowers, and other objects I find the background blur (bokeh) just about perfect. On my D300 body with the battery grip the lens balances out very well plus I get the extra 1.5 factor which made this lens a 105-450mm and brought me very close to the automobiles even though I had media access and was close enough! On the D700 it's a straight 70-300 and that works great whenever I want to shoot portraits or flowers. Close focusing distance could be a tad better but the clarity, sharpness, and contrast offset this very minor drawback. I'm thrilled with the lens and feel it is a great investment. Can't beat the price either when compared to other more popular zooms.

VG, not perfect

By Pictureted from Redwood City, CA on 07/22/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this as a long lens compliment to my 16-85 VR and was immediately disappointed. The 16-85 was so good I expected the same overall performance. As I've used it more, it's grown on me and it is an excellent lens, but you need to understand it's limitations. It needs a lot of light and isn't at it's best at 300mm. On the other hand it's amazingly compact and can deliver wonderful results without a pack mule. It won't replace the super telephotos for birds, but then it's a fraction of the cost and size too.

Very good carry-around lens

By Knowbody from Tampa, FL on 07/20/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I often shoot with this lens on my D3S and find it works extremely well. The trade-off is a little slower f/stop than the f/2.8 version, but the lighter weight and VRII more than makes up for most shooting conditions. The auto focus is relatively fast. At the short end of 70mm, I would like the minimum focus distance to be a little shorter, but for close up work, I use a mid-range zoom.

Great outdoor lens for this price range.

By Serge (ex-pro) from New York, NY - Los Angeles, CA. on 07/14/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This lens has a great range and good for outdoor sports and general photography. It lacks the speed of a F2.8 and therefore not recommended in low light or indoor. It makes up in overall weight and size. The VR works great and I have actually made several tests ...It works ! Recommend: Tripod or Monopod for greatest sharpness between 200-300mm on action shots. Alternative: 70-200 -2.8 at x5 the cost.... Nikon body: D80, D5000. Next body: 700.
