Almost all I would want from an intro level DSLR

By Manthony from Indianapolis, IN, USA on 03/21/2014

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a semi Pro Photographer and I have some very very expensive equipment. I take very good care of this equipment and generally only use is for commissioned shoots or important personal events. The usual substitution for a DSLR is a point and shoot or a mirrorless camera but I am not the biggest point and shoot fan and I am really really disappointed with Nikon's 1 series. So what I usually do is I have an older Intro Level DSLR to take with me everywhere and if anything happens too it, well darn but no biggy. I recently replaced my old D60 with the D3100 and so far I absolutely love it. It is an intro level camera so we are talking bare bones and basic and with all things you do get what you pay for but I make no apologies for this little trooper. If you are looking for an intro level DSLR as a first DSLR or to upgrade from an aging model then look no further. The D3000 series is an excellent line. It has all of the auto modes you could ever ask for for the newbies so do not be intimidated by the idea of this being too much camera for you it is incredibly user friendly. But my favourite part is that this camera grows with you as you develop your skill and knowledge. So get to know it, take some classes, get some more kit to expand your abilities but have no doubt it will keep up with you every step of the way. To be fair this is not a camera I would take on commissioned shoots but even then get the right lighting and the right lens and there really is no reason you couldn't if you wanted. My only bones to pick with the D3100 are that for video (and I shoots stills, I could hardly care less) the sound and the auto focus are terrible but again you get what you pay for and this model was never really intended to be strong in video. If you are looking for a video capable intro level camera then you will love the D5000 series with much better sound and auto focus. And the only actual legitimate complaint I have with the D3100 is there is no Inferred sensor to allow wireless remote control. Why? Why would you do that you have always had it in you DSLRs, why cut it from this model? Fortunately Nikon fixed this issue in the D3200 and D3300 models. Two amazing intro level DSLRs in their own right. So aside from one mirror annoyance I have to say, great job Nikon I am a life long Nikon shooter but I know, love and use most other brands as well, still I am pleased I chose Nikon for my kit. If you are looking for an intro Level DSLR the D3100 and it's successors the D3200 and D3300 are excellent choices that are perfect for complete beginners and grow with you every step of the way.

I love this camera

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this camera as a birthday/christmas present and I couldn't be happier with it! Not only does it take amazing photos and videos, but it's super easy to use and it has so many fun features!! This camera came with two different types of lenses and the standard battery/charger. As someone who has recently taken up photography as a hobby and loves to travel, this camera is definitely worth it and has come in handy for fun adventures as well as school projects. If you want a great DSLR to start out with, I'd recommend this camera/model.

Okay, I just got this camera as a Chirstmas gift from my father. I have taken all of my photos on my camera phone. In which the count exceeds 1000 plus photos. I took this picture of my puppy. I was just so shocked at how it looked like a professional photograher took the photo. I absolutely love this camera. Once you read the basic user instructions or even without it.. You will never go wrong for paying more money for this camera.

The D3100

By Emily from Michigan on 07/14/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had this baby for a little over two years and it is still working pretty good! I've dropped it once (not too bad), and it still works like a charm. I take it with me wherever I go, and it's easy to travel with. The 18-55 lens has given me beautiful photos! I love the in-camera editing features, like turning the photos into black and white, cropping, and other basic editing. I think this camera is best for beginners; this was my first dslr, and it was one of the best purchases that I have ever made! When I first got it, I didn't even read the instructions, I just played with it. And it was really easy (shooting manual and automatic), so if you're a beginner and you want a less expensive (yet high quality camera), definitely buy it!

By DSLR Beginner from Grand Junction, CO, USA on 03/20/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have only owned my D3100 (Red one) for a few weeks and can see BIG differences in my photography, even being a beginner. I have greater control of how I want my photos to turn out. I didn't think I would like shooting in RAW mode but I will probably never go back to shooting in JPEG. I love getting it out and shooting any chance I can get. Will be purchasing some filters soon to expand my shooting capabilities even further ( solarizer and polarizer) Over all, as this is my first DSLR, I feel it is an excellent camera for the price. I like the menus and they are easy to navigate. I tested another brand before making my final decision and did not like the navigation of their menus.

Best Entry-Level DSLR

By windlockatc from Perry, GA on 03/02/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I absolutely love this camera! I'm still getting use to it, but I love how this camera operates. It's light, and it takes excellent pictures as well as Full HD Video. The downside to this camera is, only AF-S lenses will work on this camera. Plain Jane AF lenses will physically fit, but AF will not work as there is no AF motor in the Camera body.

Excellent Choice

By Crash Atoms from New Mexico, USA on 02/20/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I learned potography with a 1970s model, full-manual Minolta SLR as well as the Nikon fm-10 SLR. The D3100 made the transition to digital far more enjoyable than I expected. I've had the D3100 for a few months now and have taken some excellent photos with it. I recommend buying extra batteries as memory cards right away as I've had so much fun taking pictures with this camera, that I wear them out quickly. If you're a student of photography or an experienced photo nut, you'll like the amount of control you have over the D3100. All aperature, speed, flash and exposure compensation controls are easily accessed and the screen is high enough quality to see and comare different settings in most circumstances. As far as price goes you can't go wrong with this when compared to comprable models from other manufacturers. I own both the 18-55 and the 55-200 lenses, and the image quality is very pleasing. I haven't tried any other lenses so far, but have been very happy with these. The picture I'm including with this review were all taken at the circus with the D3100.

FIRST DIGITAL SLR OWNED

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is my real baby, the superior quality of photos that I take with it are priceless compared to the other digital cameras like SONY & Kodak that I have had. I bought the package with 2 lens and have added other attachments, including adapters for telescope. The batteries last but bought a backup and charger for the car just in case. Highly recommend this one to everyone. Have owned this camera since 2010.

Great DSLR for starter or ameture photography

By NikonBoi from Missoula, MT, USA on 02/04/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera in 2011 after doing several months of research on the best entry level DSLR. I've shot film for years with an old F-3 and enjoyed the process of manipulating the camera to get the best results. Once digital came around I moved to a point and shoot and had fun with that but really started to miss the idea of manual settings. This D3100 was the perfect step into the DSLR world. The kit lens is very good and what I've enjoyed even better is using the AF-S 35mm F1.8 fixed lens. These two combined have turned out some simply amazing shots for me and is the ultimate "walking around" set up. The camera is intuitive and very simple to use. I've since moved on to the next step and decided that the D90 was the most logical choice for me to go from here...both technically and financially. I'm glad I've had the time to get back into photography with the D3100. It's helped me in all aspects of my photography (which still needs work)!

excellent for a budding photographer

By grace from Allentown, PA, USA on 01/08/2013

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've owned point-and-shoot digital cameras in the past and as my photography skills, confidence with electronics, and interest in photography and digital editing increased, I decided to move up to a consumer dslr. This camera is fantastic. It's at the lower end of the dslr price range, which makes it a good entry-level dslr. It has tons of features that I'm still figuring out, but not to the point of being overwhelming. It feels good in my hands, and takes gorgeous photos. I intend to use this camera for a very long time and, because I'm very pleased with the service and quality of this one, I would likely purchase another Nikon camera in the future.

Lacks features, Poor funtionality,

By LMB from Hawaii on 11/24/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Bought to replace my D70 with corroded CCD.This camera has bee a disappointment since opening the box. First thing I found was it lacked a bracketing function. My fault I guess since the D70 had auto bracketing, and I did not see that in my research. Second was it only take 10 minutes of video at a time. Frustrating to have to restart in the middle of a shoot. Third is the whole focusing system. This camera has a herd time focusing making quik shooting impossible in auto mode, must manual focus. The camera reverts back to dynamic focus every time I turn it off. I prefer single point. Also the single point does not stay where I put it. I have to move it back to the point I want at every shot. I guess I should just get a fully manual camera and give up on point and shoot. Now the flash will not popup, ugh, and it is only two years old My old D70 was fast and reliable until ghosts appeared on the CCD.

Great beginner Camera

By ChacaCon from Undisclosed on 11/23/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I knew nothing of SLR cameras when I got the d3100. I found myself dispointed in it at first but I found out the problem was with me. I was shooting in JPG(not RAW) and in AUTO mode(not one of the manual modes). I turned to Youtube and found out that there is SOOO much more you can do with that camera when you shoot in RAW(good software like Lightroom 4 and such to edit them in) and Manual Mode! My pics turned out better than I could have imagined! For a beginner camera this a great start! Take the time to learn your camera and your fam and friends will be blown away with what you can do with this camera. I have used this camera for over a year and have upgraded to the D7000. The pictures I have supplied are NOT photoshoped or edited in anyway.

I would not describe myself as a professional photographer but I am pretty advanced, and to be honest this camera performs quite remarkable. Colors are on point, attach optional lenses to this baby and really there isn't much that this little beast of a camera can't do. When compared to Canon cameras of the same price range white balance is better on the Canon, but really that is easily fixed in Photoshop. Sometimes I think it is up to the skill of the photographer and the purpose of the camera. For my purposes this gives very good enlargements, Prints are very usable up to ISO 1600, in my case I use alot of speedlites so that is less of an issue. If you are looking for a first time DSLR to grow with or as a second backup to a more expensive DSLR this is the camera for you.

Great Camera

By Hotel2600 from Jacksonville, FL, USA on 09/16/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My first Nikon was a coolpix L110 and though it took good photo's I was always wishing for some manual options such as focus etc. I can't save up for the life of me so I jumped at the first Nikon DSLR I had the cash for ie. the cheapest. All I can say is Wow! this time my bad habit didn't become a costly let down. Great crisp portraits, fast and accurate focussing plus the versatility of changing lenses etc. I'm now addicted to photography again. The only complaint I have is the monitor is distracting as i usually use the viewfinder to take my shots. This has been remedied to a certain degree by turning the auto shut off to a minimum and I am getting better at ignoring it. On a positive note it does give you a great way ( for those with poor eyesight ) of managing the settings on the camera. In short....... an awesome begginers to serious hobbyist camera.

D3100 Making a Pro out of anyone!

By Nikon Preacher from Dallas, TX, USA on 08/20/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pro's.......the Kids,Wife and even grandma can use this camera in auto mode. If everyone had composition skills this camera would make professional of all. The auto guide feature will drive you right down the path to picture success. Awesome pictures, tons of online support It's a real full featured D-SLR. You don't have to turn it on to view through the eyepiece like Sony's. Con's.....The video feature all though new to the integrated DSLR world, seems to be lagging behind the SLR want to be digital cameras. The auto focus feature is working double time to keep up and to figure what scene it wants to focus on. However, I'm sure given some shooting time this little minor oddity can be overcome. "My advice use this feature with the camera mounted on a stand" It appears that .mov is the only movie format offered. "That really stinks!" given all the camera options this package offers......that must have been overlooked. Having a rechargeable battery as your only single battery option stinks. While far from the house it easy to pick up double A's anywhere. My battery went dead while at the Zoo. Well, the Zoo sells double A's. But I had to ask the staff if I could plug it in somewhere. I guess I could by two, but I think you get the point.

Photography made easy. Very easy.

By Cavallino328 from Hayward, CA on 08/12/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've been a Nikon user since 1979, and I knew I finally had to make the switch from my trusty F2 to digital. I was scared. I knew nothing about digital. My 3100 arived two days before I was going off on vacation, so this would be trial be fire. The 3100 performed masterfully. Like all good Nikon SLR's, it took all of the abuse my equipment typically receives. It has many programs, and you can start shooting immediately. My date is not one to take pictures, but this was so easy to use, she quickly picked it up and had the confidence to shoot away. I'm still figuring out how to use my old AI lenses on this new body. This camera is light and easy to use. My next goal is to figure out how to get fill-in flash to work. Great deal for the price. I'm glad I picked this model for a starter digital camera.

Great Camera

By TMgilly from Kerrville, Texas on 08/11/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love my new Nikon D3100, it was great price and came packaged with a Nikkor 18-55 lens and a Nikkor 55-300 zoom lens which I really like for shooting wildlife. The camera and lens are very easy to use in basic auto mode, but I really like being able to control speed, ISO, etc. and this camera makes these things just as easy to use as auto, or I can choose landscape, portrait, etc. and let the camera do the thinking for me. I like haveing so much flexability that is simple to apply. Photos I've taken so far are great.

Takes awsome photos

By Stabler Getzville from West Seneca NY on 08/09/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera to have better quality pictures and videos of family events. The camera was easy to setup and use AUTO function. The picture and video quality is excellant. The only real issue that I found is that the sound on the microphone is somewhat poor especially in a loud environment and there is no input for a better external microphone of better quality, but this is only a minor propblem for most of the videos which I have taken.

Easy to use!

By NikonLover56 from Tipp City Ohio on 08/07/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my second digital camera and my first DSLR. I replaced my old Cannon AE1 Program film camera with this D3100. The camera was easy to use out of the box, without reading the manual and I have gotten great pictures with it for the past year. I recently took a one hour class at the photography store I purchased my camera from. That class helped me understand some of the new terminology and a bit more on where to use the various modes. I am not a "photographer" but the pictures coming from this camera make me look like one! I love digital photography now, more than film camera because I can see my results immediately and know if I need to try again or I am good to go. I went whale watching last summer and with the multiple frame setting, I got fantastic shots of whales breaching. Love it! Thanks Nikon!

I have been able to play with the night feature as well and have been impressed by its ability to take amazing pictures night or day. There is also a help feature on the camera so if I am confused about something on the screen it can give insight to what I'm looking at. Overall, very happy with this camera and I am very excited to take more!

Great Beginner's Camera!

By RussM from New York, NY, USA on 07/03/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to take up photography either as a profession or hobby. It is very user friendly; especially with it's GUIDE option on the selector. This option provides good picture examples on the effects of various factors such as different exposures, ISO, etc. It's also quite compact, relative to the other models out there. I recently started taking up photography as a personal hobby and I have to say, this camera has taught be quite a bit by just going outside and taking pictures rather than sitting in front of a manual. I would recommend this to anyone as a starter's camera. It's a good first step on the way to pursuing photography in my opinion.

I bought this camera for a trip to Australia and just love it. I have owned Nikon's all my life and its products like this that keep me a Nikon fan. The 3100 fells natural when in my hands. I was a little disappointed that my older lenses would not auto-focus but I only had to replace one and did that with a VR series and it was very affordable. I was also able to find it in red, that surprised me but I love it in red. my only complaint is it does look a bit funny with a zoom lens on as the lens is so big compared to the new smaller body ...but since that my worst complaint I'm happy.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My D3100 has features about the same as my D60 with larger megapixels for a larger picture, though rarley used, is there regardless. I compared it to a D5100 and a D3200 and found it outdoing one and equalling the other. I get very good performance out of my cameras and you will have a hard time convincing me that your advanced models are better.

Great Little Camera!

By LadyShutterBug from Inglewood, CA, USA on 06/15/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this camera for my company on the advice of my son, who shoots with a D-90. It takes great pictures and is pretty easy to use. I'm no expert, and there are plenty of things I still have to learn about it, but for everyday use, either for work or for pleasure, I've had no trouble with it at all. Lenses are easy to change; basic settings are quickly accessible for easy adjustments; it's a comfortable weight for carrying around. I would recommend this camera to non-professionals who want to take good, sharp photos without knowing a lot of photographic "science."

Crystal Clear Pictures

By Napa Nonna from Undisclosed on 06/15/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the D3100 in preparation for the birth of my first grandchild. The pictures are amazingly crystal clear. The camera is so easy to use that at his first birthday party my youngest son picked it up, could easily adjust the settings, and took 458 pictures that captured the day as if it were a video. I am constantly receiving comments about the the quality of the pictures. I love this camera!

Enjoying this camera!

By LoisLane5518 from United States of America on 06/14/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My husband and I have always wanted a really nice camera. Recently his job provided him with some photography training which gave us with a foundation to get the most out of our camera. I am having a lot of fun using this camera. It's maiden voyage we took it to the zoo and the pictures came out fabulous. We also went on a tour of a cavern and in relative darkness the pictures were really good. It took some work to get the flash, ISO, and white light settings to work as needed but all it took was some playing. We are now looking at purchasing more lenses and I see many years of use in our future!

I started using this camera in May 2011 and it has been nothing short of a great experience. It is easy to use yet has many "professional" options and settings that can be manually set to give you any kind of exposure, lighting, depth of field, ISO, etc. that you need. I highly recommend this camera!

Unexplained error message

By Outinolympia from Olympia, Wa on 06/04/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This camera is just over 2 years old and has performed flawlessly, until now. Am getting error message indicating the battery is not compatiable with camera. Trouble is it is the battery that came with the camera when purchased. Looked on line found many users/owners of the D3100 with the same error message without any reasons given from NIKON, some have been replaced some..... Today I purchased the D5100 because I cannot imagine life without my camera. Spent more but I fear getting another D3100.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've owned my D3100 for a little over a year now and have no complaints. The ease of use, quality of make and perfect size to carry make it a great camera for me. I am an active birder and carry it in one hand with the Nikon 55-300mm VR lens while having a pair of binoculars around my neck. It's not too heavy and I get quality photos. I also like the 18-55mm VR kit lens and take many landscape photos. I have no need to upgrade at this time as the Nikon D3100 performs flawlessly for me.

Good Camera, No Camera Control

By customer1 from Undisclosed on 05/23/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I like the D3100 however, I am not impressed that one of the top selling Nikon DSLRs isn't compatible with the camera control software. I use this camera for my business to take product pictures and unfortunately l can't use my computer to control my camera, I now have to lean over my tripod to take the pic or I have to order a remote which still doesn't give me the control I was hoping for. Very disappointed in Nikon for net upgrading the software for the D3100. Next camera I get will not be a Nikon because of this ridiculous issue.

This may be your last upgrade!

By Newin40 from California on 05/20/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I started using Nikon products in the mid-60's when I bought a used S2 rangefinder. Over the past 40-plus years I've used any number of Nikon SLR's, lenses, point & shoots and DSLR's. I've done so for two simple reasons; quality and performance and the D3100 doesn't disappoint in either area. If you're and all-out professional you have likely already broken open the piggy bank for a D4, or something similar. Probably a sound decision, as the D3100 wasn't designed to get its owner the cover of Sports Illustrated or to produce fine-art gallery Prints. However, in the hands of a reasonably proficient shooter the D3100 is more than capable of producing quality exposures suitable for enlargements in the 11x14, 16x20 range, perfect for displaying your creativity at home or in the office. To my mind the D3100 suits the need of those looking to upgrade from a fully automatic point and shoot compact to a multi-lens DSLR system, and those wanting a quality, versatile backup DSLR body for their bag, which has as an added bonus compact size and lighter weight . If you find yourself in the first category, the transition from full in-camera automation to full control over your exposures will be nearly seamless. The camera certainly performs admirably in either full auto or any of the various "scene" modes, but as you develop a keener eye and a more comprehensive understanding of how things like aperture, focal length, shutter speed, white balance and the other photographic variables interact in producing a desired image, the manual modes will prove both reliable and effective. The D3100 is a camera which allows the owner to grow into it and gradually make full use of its considerable functions as expertise increases and need dictates. Producing quality digital photographs depends primarily on three factors. Firstly, the capability of the camera sensor, secondly, the quality of the lens and, finally, the abilities of the photographer, both technical and artistic. 90% of my photography now is centered around family events and travel. Artistic prowess notwithstanding, I find the D3100 coupled with either an 18-55mm zoom Nikkor or a 55-200 zoom Nikkor Nikkor more than delivers in terms of sensor and lens quality. I do occasionally use a 55-300mm zoom Nikkor for a little more "reach" and I have recently purchased a 35mm f:1.8 Nikkor for its light gathering capability, but I only carry 2 of the four lenses at any given time. On a given any trip I carry the D3100 and select 2 lenses based on anticipated need. A pocketable Nikon S9100 and in some cases a waterproof camera completes the list. The days of a camera bag stuffed with two or three heavy camera bodies, motor drives and six lenses are, thankfully, long gone. The bottom line is this. If you're in the running for a staff position with The National Geographic, the D3100 should not be your first choice. Even so, it may be a solid choice as a dependable backup. If, on the other hand, you're looking to expand your photographic experience, ability and results beyond the limitations of your current compact point and shoot, the D3100 may well be the answer and your last "upgrade". The accompanying photographs were all taken with a D3100 and an 18-55mm zoom Nikkor. NOTE: The included images are necessarily compressed and therefore do not accurately represent the capabilities of the D3100 to produce vibrant, high quality images.

Software problem is a downer. Don't install it. Use GraphicConverter or something else.

By InfiniteLoop from Undisclosed on 05/09/2012

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

In general I like this camera, but the software provided to download images from digital media to my Macintosh computer creates a major problem. If a SDHR disk or other such media item is attached to my computer then the Nikon software will open it and download all images. I have it set to erase images from the SDHR. If I forget to remove the SDHR and restart my computer, the software sees the image SDHR and attempts to download images. Since there are no images on that SDHR anymore, the software finds nothing to download. Instead of terminating normally, it "hangs." I think I will delete the software from my computer and replace it with other software that will download images without creating the need to "force quit" to get use of my computer back.

Nikon D3100

By JHM from Charlotte, NY on 04/01/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM

I really love the 3100!

By Kwicneasy from Florida Panhandle USA on 03/04/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My first digital SLR,.. I grew up on Minolta SLR film cameras. I've had several higher end compact system and "point & shoot" digital cameras (CoolPix models, etc.), but the 3100 took me to the next level. It is lightweight, takes AWESOME pics for the price and the whole aresenal of Nikon lenses are compatible. It is easy to learn how to use and provides a lot of flexibility with just two lenses. I have the stock AF-S DX 18-55 and a 50-300 that cover almost anything you could want to shoot. For a beginner to moderately serious photographer the 3100 should do anything you are looking to do.

Awesome entry level - or excellent spare camera

By nanken from North Carolina, USA on 02/23/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

AT this price point the D3100 is an excellent camera for anyone starting out in DSLR photography - or a very capable spare for serious photographers. The dynamic range, color and image detail are terrific. This camera is very easy and comfortable for a beginner to use, and an experienced photographer can customize the settings to shoot great RAW files (NEF) in Manual mode. We got the D3100 mostly for my wife who is frustrated with her point and shoot camera, and to replace my old Nikon D100 while waiting for the Nikon D800. We have the D800 on pre-order and I can't wait to get my hands on it! In the mean time I have become very fond of the D3100. I think the light and small D3100 will be a great camera for travel photography - especially in large cities (New York, London, Paris etc.) and Disney theme parks. The first photo I took with this camera was of our cat, JPEG Fine Quality, 18 - 55mm kit lens. The flash balance was great, detail in the fur and eyes was much better than I was expecting from a camera / lens in this price range. The house finch photo was shot manual, NEF at 1600 ISO + 0.3 exposure (Raw conversion in Adobe Lightroom), Nikkor 80 - 400mm f 4.5 zoom lens (manual focus).

D3100, why not?

By Isolation Imagery from Salida, CO 81201, USA on 01/06/2012

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am a professional photographer who lives for simplicity and budget minded consumerism. In the past I've used Minolta, Canon and Nikon (film) cameras, but increasingly film has become extinct. So I decided to finaly go with the Nikon D3100 instead of the Nikon D7000 (a much more expensive model). Well, I'm not disappointed with my decision... The d3100, when operated correctly, can produce image quality that will have no problem finding a publication home. The key though is definitely understanding the camera controls. This will make a world of difference. Take the time to understand the white balance settings and please shoot in manual mode. If you are unversed in proper F-stop and aperture settings there are many online tutorials that will guide you through. Bottom line, If you really know what you're doing behind the lens there's no need to spend more money. The d3100 will get the job done. I currently use this camera for all my client assignments. The sample photos I've shared were all shot with the d3100. Obviously many of them have been edited, but this is merely an example of what you can achieve with this fine camera.

A Very Good Camera within the DSLR Family

By BillsCameraOpinions from North Royalton, Ohio on 12/05/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The D3100 being the follow on to the D3000 now nearly two years ago still has its place. This so-called "entry-level DSLR" by the Camera & Photo aristocrats, may in fact be at that so-called level, however, the D3100 is no slouch. Some of the more sophisticated whistles and bells, optional capabilities, CMOS Sensor size, FPS, Objective Lens size, etc., may not exist when compared to some of the other Nikon DSLR's, or other brands of similar products. However, and it is a big however - this Camera takes very nice pictures! It's ability to capture dark and light scenes is impressive. Its Movie recording capabilities are also better than good. I do wish it had Stereo vs. Mono Audio for Movie recording - as well as Nikon should include a USB & A/V Cabling in their D3100 Kits - which they do not. That aspect is a bit cheap on Nikon's part. Most other brands do include these items in their equivalent Camera Kits. The standard 18-55mm Lens handles nearly all general photographing (as is the standard zoom range for most kit lenses), and the choices for optional Zoom Lenses by Nikon is significant. My additional Nikon Lens for this product is the 55-300VR - which provides all the close ups on Wildlife and Landscapes my type shooting requires. I have other DSLRS, and even more powerful lenses, however, you will not be disappointed with these, or other Nikon Lenses that work on your D3100. The only other item I would have like to have had on the D3100 is the movable, rotary articulating LCD Screen such as that on the D5100 and other DSLR's to enable protecting the LCD Screen without having to utilize a Screen Cover. However, a GGS(tm) Glass Screen Protector made for the D3100 fits perfectly, and provides protection for the VCD, and easy cleaning of the surface. Bottom Line: The Nikon D3100 is a joy to use, it does not cost a fortune, provides clean, crisp, colorful photographs, the built-in User Guide Display is really handy for those moments whereby you just might forget what does what, in what setting, when you are making your own Camera adjustments in the Creative Modes of operation, which is the real purpose of a DSLR. So do not be afraid to buy this Model product, and as the year 2011 ends, there are super deals on this Model Product - get it now!

By Buckster from St. Johns County, Fl on 11/04/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Even though this is an entry-level camera, it is powerful and intuitive. After some practical field experience and the addition of another Nikkor lens, I have been able to utilize manual mode to capture some breathtaking images. I am a complete amateur, but have gotten fantastic results and very favorable reviews of my work because of this camera. I'm looking forward to learning more and maybe even pursue digital photography as more than just a hobby.

Only con is battery life

By mustang from New Hampshire on 09/28/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Incredible camera with almost all the right features ..It does some things like video better than the D90 Really like the selector lever for shooting mode , ie. single ,burst , timer . No more going back and forth into the menu settings just to change the mode . Wish it had an auxiliary mic input for video . the built in mic picks up too much camera noise when focusing or zooming , and having a stereo input would be awesome. But for the price point it is an incredible camera . The photos pop with color . Battery life is not so good , manual claims 200 pics per charge , have not even got close to that .I use a battery grip with two battery's and they still lose power quite soon . It is a great camera for beginners to experienced photographers .

A good value with one disappointment

By GES from Sunnyvale CA on 09/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the D-3100 kit with the 18-55, and 55-200 VR kit lenses, but would only advise someone to do this, if they do NOT plan to buy other Nikkor Lenses, and don't have older Nikkor lenses like the AI-S lenses. So I quickly replaced both those lenses with the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 55-300 zoom Nikkors. I do have a number of Excellent AI-S lenses, and that was my big disappointment. They work great on the D-3100, in A, and M modes, but the light meter doesn't. Not a big problem for the Nikkor lenses; but it is for my 1300mm F/16 Telescope. I have also now a D-7000 body, but the D-3100 is my prime walkaround camera with the 17-55 f/2.8 DX zoom Nikkor on it, and the 55-300 DX zoom for the long shots. If I could buy a D-3100 body only, I would buy another one, to put the original kit lenses on. Nikon should turn the light meter back on for the D-3100, and the D-5100 for those great AI-S lenses.

Great DSLR for Beginners

By SGT Dunaway from Undisclosed on 07/29/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had the D3100 for 6 months now and will never go back to a point and shoot camera. The only negative thing I can say about this camera is the lack of controll. It dose allow a lot of controll for the user but not as much as I would like. Also I have lerned that it dose not do well in sandy inviroments. I am currently deployed to Afgahnistan and I am constently having to clean it after each time I go out and shoot. I will be upgrading to the D7000 after I get back state side how ever. This is a great SLR for begginers how ever it has tought me a lot about photography and I would recommend it to any one that is wanting to get into DSLR it is not as intemidating withh all the functions as some of the more profesinol DSLRs Thank you Nikon for creating the perfect entry level DSLR.

How did I live without it!

By Novice Nikon Lover from Louisville, KY on 07/16/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I always felt film should remain a staple for the novice photographer. You should learn on basic film SLR cameras and then maybe move up and consider the digitals. But I never wanted to use a digital until my film SLR Nikon broke during a very important event. So, off the cuff I purchased this D3100 and now I am wondering, "how did I ever live without this?" Simply put, as a photographer, you have so many wonderful options with this camera. It's great and I do plan on keeping it for a very long time!

Love my Nikon d3100

By FirstNikon from IL on 06/12/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love my new Nikon d3100. It takes beautiful pictures with great detail. I still have so much to learn as there are many options. I can do point and shoot with the Auto and I can change settings manually. It does not come with a usb cable which is a bummer, especially for the price but the quality of the camera and what it can do is very much worth it. Also, I bought another lens (55-200) as I wanted to get closer to objects than what the 35-55 could do. Overall very happy with my purchase and can't wait until I feel like a pro with it.

Great News Guys

By 3 Hour Tour from Indianapolis on 04/28/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is so impressive, I absolutely love it. Based on the price, I believe the functionality of this piece makes the whole unit a great value. My pictures are incredibly sharp and many of the techniques I prefer are super simple to manage or construct. My light painting look crisp and clear. My only complaint is that the movie mode catches quite a bit of motor noise. It is easily fixed as long as you become familiar with manual focus through the entire film.

This product just disappoints.

By Camera guy at a school from Undisclosed on 04/26/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The camera is just not good enough on any level. I am buying new lens's so i can zoom in a little closer or farther away and I am buying another set of lenses for everyday use that is light weight. I am also buying a flash for it because the one it comes with just doesn't bring any light to the photo's. Colors and such are clear but zoom no got to be close real close. Flash umm no the flash is just good enough to get in light for those up and close photos. back up for a classroom photo of children and it is a no go. Fast enough f to catch a action shot without blurring umm no. football players just smear across the film and if your hand is not steady blur city here we come. does the vr make a difference well if it does i can't tell vr on is just as blurry as vr off. Yes I have a tripod. Yes I am not satisfied. That is why i am having work get more lenses and flash. Will the camera be good enough then maybe don't know they haven't got here yet. I do know my superiors at work were disappointed enough with the photos to not argue with me when i asked for thousands in new parts for the camera. so if you want to make that expenditure well I'm not stopping you.

Great Camera when it works.

By Yamikaze from Central Michigan on 04/24/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have had my D3100 since November 29, 2010. It is simple to use and takes some great pictures. It has let me down twice though. In early February the mode dial stopped working. I sent it back for repairs. All seemed to be fine until I needed to use my SB600 flash. Now the camera does not communicate with the flash. Yes it did work before I sent it in. I am not happy that I will once again have to be without my camera, especially since I have some important family functions coming up over the next several weeks. I want a different camera, either a new D3100 or a different model. I like Nikon I grew up with Nikon camera's that my dad owned. Lets see if we can resolve this issue quickly. I will be glad to edit my review when this issue is resolved.

For being a entry level camera it packs a punch and is pretty much loaded I do miss the top LCD info center and the depth of field preview button but otherwise this is a loaded entry level camera it does have more to offer than most the pro level cameras so its a very cool and different camera!

4MyWifeAndI-Our "All to do well" DSLR

By PeterPan from Qubec, QC on 04/16/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Just beginning with it, this D3100 is my third DSLR (along with D40 and D3000), the whole family will soon be equipped (except, maybe, the cat). A far step ahead my (old) D40 and quieter and faster. Super color rendering (Thanks my Nikkors!), fast image processing, multiple image possibilities, compact, lightweight, precise, "enlightening" everyday images but I need a AA battery grip. Next, last and not least: my wife is delighted with the videos capabilities and rendering!!

Great Bang for the Buck

By Charlie from Washington State on 04/16/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

For the average amateur photographer like me that wants a fast action camera with no delay you can't go wrong with this. The software that comes with the camera is straight forward and easy to use from my findings so far. With the right lenses this can be a great point and shoot or go into more depth on shots. If you are an amateur please make sure you have lenses that are VR or VRII. The standard 18-55mm is a great lens but if you want a decent zoom lens get the 55-300mm or the 70-300mm either one you won't be disappointed. I got the 55-300mm as it is a few hundred dollars cheaper.

Great first DSLR for amateurs

By dave from San Jose, CA on 04/15/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Not wanting a heavy camera such as the D7000, I opted for the far more light-weight D3100. It takes fairly good pictures most of the time, but there a few omissions that annoy me: 1. no bracketing 2. no mirror lock up 3. no wireless remote or flash commander 4. No DOF preview Video shooting is not fun with this camera. Try holding a DSLR in front of your face so that you can use the non-movable screen to track your subject. you'll see what I mean, after a few moments of awkardness. Secondly, the lens noise from focusing and VR is clearly audible in the soundtrack and since there is no mic input jack, you can't simply add an external mic. Using a separate mic is one way around that, but then you have to sync up the audio during PP. The camera is well shaped for my large hands (something else I didn't like about the 7000--it's not as ergonomic IMO) I particularly like the Drive Mode selector's location (a rotatable switch under the Mode control). The battery compartment cover seems a bit insecure, but so far, I haven't lost a battery. The SD card compartment door rattles. The screen doesn't have enough pixels to easily discern critical focus.

Worthy investment

By JKPS from Palm Springs, CA on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We recently purchased the D3100 [and the 18-55 standard lens] along with a 55-300 lens, and a case that came with a Nikon school DVD. It replaced a Panasonic Lumix with 12x zoom for our trip to New Zealand. The DVD was very useful - it helped us take some outstanding photos especially with the powerful zoom lens at night. The standard lens allowed for some spectacular wide angle shots. The videos were also very easy to record even for our children using the Guide mode. The one star penalty was for the fact that for the perfect shot, you had to often change lenses unlike the Panasonic. On one occasion, in the process of doing so in rainy weather, one of the lens settings got accidentally pushed from auto to manual and ruined all shots. The camera didn't prompt any warning, nor compensated for the blur. I guess the SLRs are not as idiot-proof as the point and shoots and need to be carefully checked for settings every time - not always easy to do when you have a spontaneous opportunity.

Almost perfect beginner dslr

By E from RSM, CA on 04/14/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I wanted to get into dslr photography for awhile, and finally took the plunge with the D3100. I am very happy with my purchase! Some words on the 18-55mm kit lens: it's soft, and a bit slow to focus in low contrast, dimly lit environments. I'm not knocking the lens, it's a great starter lens, i'm just noting some things i've noticed after using it for a few months now. If you are in a dimly lit, low contrast situation, i suggest focusing on the highest contrast target available, to minimize focus hunting. Outside of the low contrast focusing issues, the autofocus is quick and precise. And as for the softness of the lens, well it is what it is. Don't get me wrong, it's still very sharp, but in comparison to other lenses it's a bit soft. Stick to about f8 for maximum sharpness. I bought the Nikon 35mm 1.8G lens a few weeks after i got my camera, and that lens is extremely sharp, even close to wide open (1.8). For an everyday walkaround lens i highly recommend the 35mm 1.8G lens, you'll love it! Now my thoughts on the camera! It's impressive, enough said. I turned off all the image aids like noise reduction and such, as they actually degraded the image, imho. I was especially dissappointed with the active d-lighting (adl). TURN IT OFF! When shooting darker, more shadowy targets adl will introduce significant noise into the image. I originally thought my camera wasn't working properly, as I was seeing excessive noise in my images when viewing them on the computer. But after turning off the adl the noise went away. The images this camera produces are stunning! Shoot in RAW format, you'll be amazed how much better the images turn out in that format, after a bit of work in post production using the supplied software. The build quality of the camera is very good, with good textures and a nice solid feel. It's an entry level camera, keep that in mind. Buttons have a good, solid feel and action, and are clearly labeled. There is one programable function button available, which is useful. The menus are intuitive and easy to navigate. You can hit a ? button which quickly brings up a short description of the item highlighted. The guide mode is very useful for beginners who have no idea what shutter, aperture, and ISO mean, or how they affect the image. The camera is small for a dslr, and light, so it makes a great travel camera. I've shot all day with it with no issues. The camera feels good in my hand and is nicely balanced. The camera's high ISO performance is impressive! I can go as high as 1600 and still have very usable images, especially 4x6 and 5x7 sizes. The larger you try to print the picture, the more of the noise you'll see. But even 8x10s at ISO 1600 were very good looking. There WILL be noise at 800 and above, but the camera does a great job of limiting it. I compared high ISO images from the D3100 to the D90, and the D3100 actually produced less noise and loss of detail above 800. Now that is truly impressive! That's thanks to it's newer EXPEED 2 sensor. Now don't think the D3100 is better than the D90, it's not. But it can slightly out perform it in image quality at high ISO. I've talked alot about the positives of the camera, now let me address some of the negatives that I've uncovered in my time with it. No exposure bracketing. Personally, I could care less. I've used a friend's D90 to see what exposure bracketing was all about and I just don't see my ametuer self utilizing it. Only one programable function button. I feel for beginners it's not a big deal. You have your shutter and aperture on dedicated buttons/wheels, and ISO defaults to the function button. You can change this in the menu to whatever you'd like. I leave it on ISO, but i've read alot of people don't like having to go into the menu for thier white balance and other things. For me it's not an issue, I really don't care about having to go into the menu every now and then when i need to adjust my white balance or auto focus mode. I can see how a professional would want everything on buttons so they don't have to take thier eye out of the viewfinder. But those individuals wouldn't be buying this camera. But it's something to think about, so think about it. 3fps burst mode. This is a bit slow in the dslr world. Should you care? If you're a beginner, I really don't think so. If you're planning on getting a telephoto lens and shooting a lot of fast moving sports, then maybe consider a faster camera. But honestly I think it's a non-issue for most ameteur photographers, especially beginners. I've done some burst shooting and I found 3fps to be perfectly acceptable. High speed sync (hss)! Or a lack thereof. This camera can support flash sync up to 1/200, but no higher. You need AUTO FP (Nikon's chip or software that allows hss) to sync a flash to the camera, and Nikon did not include it on it's entry level cameras (D3100, D5100). I wish I had known that before purchasing! I might have continued to save for a D90 or my next camera, the D7000. Ok so what is high speed sync, and why should I care? Well you can't have a shutter speed faster than 1/200 with a flash. And what does that mean? Well you need flash and a very fast shutter speed to truly freeze motion on fast moving targets. I tried to freeze a bumble bee flying around a flower near my work and at 1/200 there was still some motion on the image. Same with my attempts to freeze water (large sprinklers spraying a hillside). I could not completely freeze the image, that velocity of the water was fast. Hss would have allowed me to use a higher shutter speed to achieve my desired image. Also, cranking up your shutter when shooting outdoors with a bright sun can produce amazing effects, IF you can flash your target to properly expose it. But forget about it at 1/200, it won't work. That so far has been the one issue that has truly dampened my feelings for this camera. All other issues don't really bother me, I can work around them or just ignore them. But this is a biggie for me. I still highly recomment this camera to anyone wanting to get into dslr photography, just know this one large limitation. If you're not going to go out trying to freeze your target, you won't even notice this issue. Oh, I failed to mention you'll need a seperate speedlight (SB600-900 models) also if you want to achieve hss on any nikon camera, the pop up flash can't do it. I went out and got the SB600 before it was discontinued, and I love it! And one final note on the lack of hss - it's not the end of the world. At 1/200 you can freeze motion in a lot of situations, but only if the target isn't moving extremely fast (like a bee's wing in flight, or fast spraying water). Now this all applies to using a speedlight flash, which means you've got to be close to your target to flash them. If you're out shooting in good sunlight, you can crank up your shutter and ISO without flash and freeze motion, like a bird in flight. But to freeze water I've found you have to flash it, unfortunately. I'm a beginner so if there is a way hopefully someone will correct me. But you won't be able to utilize hss, that i'm postive of (called Nikon myself!). Final thoughts! Other than lacking hss, I absolutely LOVE this camera. I shoot every day with it, and it's always rewarding. If you're a newbie like me, I suggest doing a 365 project, which is taking at least one picture a day, and posting one somewhere (facebook, etc) for others to see. It will help you use your camera and learn your camera. It's fun and rewarding. So if you're interested in dslr photography go get this camera! It's affordable and very feature rich. The image quality is outstanding, it's easy to use, and very easy to carry and shoot with. I suggest some extra gear, a good speed light (SB600-900) so you can bounce your flash. It's so much better than the pop up flash, which sucks on all cameras from all manufacturers. Also, get yourself a nice prime lens with an aperture of 1.8 or 1.4, it will allow you to do things the kit lens just can't do, like dramatic depth of field effects (google image search "bokeh" to see what I'm talking about). Hope this review helps!

A good camera but....

By rri from California on 04/10/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I only had the camera a little over a month. It took some really spectacular pictures--I was able to take pictures rich in color and detail. Portraits came out with good clarity. This camera is good for those just starting out with a DSLR. Very easy to use and overall good functionality. Once you review the manual and practice using the different features, it is relatively easy to operate. The only drawback is that there is no live view and for those not used to using the viewfinder, may find it difficult to get used to. I don't know if it is a one off/islolated experience, but the Auto Focus/Auto Function malfunctioned beyond repair. I probably would still have the camera had it not expired so prematurely. Needless to say, once the camera was looked at and deemed defective, it was replaced with no hassle...I ended up with a D3100.

Good for entry level and experienced users

By Trevor from Undisclosed on 04/01/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my first Nikon, and I'm a big fan. I don't have the budget for top end gear, but this camera really lets me take some great shots without costing me a fortune. Operation is a breeze with most everything available at the touch of a button. A few controls aren't exactly where I'd like them, but you can do what you like without your eyes having to leave the subject. The menu system is great. It has a lot of features but is also intuitive. Far less button pushing to get what you want than other cameras! I'm really pleased with the image quality, even with the kit lens. Noise is remarkably low compared to cameras just a year older. I use up to ISO 1600 with no worries and 3200 if need be without much concern, but when you just don't have light Hi1 and Hi2 still yield reasonable results. What is truly exceptional is the autofocus, especially 3d tracking. I shoot runners a lot, and it is simply amazing for the camera to track a runner and maintain focus as you shoot. The only downside for my needs is the lack of bracketing which is addressed by the D5000/5100. Also, while I don't shoot a lot of video, I would say the image quality is good, but focus is tricky and you hear the lens with no external mic. In other words, a neat feature but not the best use. Overall, I'm quite happy. While I'd love a D7000, this guy has done the trick and gotten amazing shots.

Great features and ability. The video is cool, except the Auto-Focus is very noticeable in the audio on play back. Cant complain much because I didn't buy a video camera, I bought the worlds best brand DSLR. I love the digital zoom on Live View mode, the option switch on the top turn dial. The many modes of automatic shooting. This camera is well made and is a great beginner camera for the entry in to the world of DSLR. The images included are original and not put through any editing programs. They are the raw, naked photos straight from my Nikon D3100

Love My Nikon D3100!!

By Nikongirl1 from St.Louis,Missouri on 03/05/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This camera is my first entry into digital photography, and I am extremely happy with it.Not only is it lightweight, but it feels like it was made for my hands-very important! (started out with Yashica-Contax film cameras in the early 80's and remember how heavy that they were. No comparison, the 3100 feels like a feather compared to these!) Also like how all of the controls and buttons are laid out in the design. The movie mode is nice, but doubtful if I will ever use it, because I bought this camera for still shots.Happy that it has a viewfinder that I don't have to shoot looking at the monitor-hate that! (I still want to feel like I'm shooting film, but with the benefits of digital) Am SO happy that the 2 Nikon lenses (28-80 zoom, and a 80-300 zoom) that I already own are compatible with this camera, except that I have to manual focus them.(now I've got a 18-55mm zoom,a 28-80 zoom,a 55-200 zoom, and a 80-300 zoom) But this doesn't bother me one bit, because I have been manual focusing my cameras for over 20 years now.For the price, the quality and features are just amazing. Can't wait until I can get out and use it more when the weather gets better here.Great camera,Nikon-worth every penny and then some!!

My first venture into the digital world is more than I wished for. Loving the 55-300 zoom lens - getting great wildlife shots - great resolution and no more waiting until the film is developed to see my pictures. Very good color; focusing is easy with the many focus points visible in the viewfinder. The instructional CD was very helpful showing all the features and flexibility of the D3100 and, the Nikon software makes transferring and editing pictures on my computer easy. Can't wait to use the many features available (night shots, video, portraits, etc.).

Love It!!!

Bottom Line:

I really dont have enough experience with photography to write a technical review on this camera but I will say that if you are looking to get a first DSLR I would strongly recommend this one. The price is excellent and for your money you get a very user friendly package that if your a newb like me will almost hold your hand through a manual shot. It is an awesome way to teach yourself how to use one. IF your new though I would strongly a Intro to Digital Photography course it will pay for itself in knowledge and can not be beat in learninghow to use a Dslr . I included the below shot which is I might add was taken within a week of me bringing the 3100 home. Also one of my pooch which I titled "waiting" for obvious reasons. Let me know what you think like I said I really dont know what I am doing yet but I am hooked already

versatile and fun with professional results

By Daivd S from Rockland, WI on 02/20/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a great camera for those who are just getting into digital photography, and those who are experienced and looking for a semi-professional camera to take them to the next level. I thought getting used to the menu system would be challenging and frustrating, but nothing could be further from the truth. It is extremely easy to navigate the menu system and change the settings. The many mode settings are extremely useful. I find that being able to control the level on the flash output is extremely handy to prevent clipping the the highlights (washout). In addition to the many modes of operation you can select between different metering modes for proper exposure and several focus modes to ensure you get the most out of the 11 point focus system. White balance can also be adjusted to compensate for the available lighting whether indoors or out and even mixed lighting conditions. It is nice that Nikon continues to use the bayonet F mount for lens mounting. It allows me to use my manual Nikkor lenses, especially for reverse mounting them to do macro work. At 14.2 megapixels the results are stunning. The fine people of Nikon continue to give me no reason to look anywhere else for my photography needs.

Very good substitute for large heavy digital SLR

By watcher1 from Atlanta on 02/18/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I entered the digital SLR world with a D70 about six years ago. Was generally happy with it, although the learning curve for digital was very steep coming from 40+ years with a film SLR. Moved up to a D300 and it got even more complex, probably more camera than I needed or wanted at this stage in my life. I do not use the vast majority of the D300's features and get very few perfect out-of-the-camera shots. I spend way too much time in post-processing I purchased the D3100 as a second body for a trip to Antarctica. I have been shooting with it for about three months (as my principal camera). It is much smaller and lighter, feels good in the hand and takes all my Nikkor lenses, most of which balance fine on it (even the 70-200/2.8 VR1). Overall, I am very satisfied and find I use the D3100 more than my D300. I get very good pictures (well exposed and saturated). I haven't noticed any bad shots because of complex lighting, difficult focusing situations, etc (perhaps because I haven't run into many complex situations). Generally, I just shoot away (almost always in aperture priority mode), occasionally making exposure compensations (something I almost always had to do - or felt I had to do - with the D300). I also move the focus point around frequently. Other than changing the ISO, I use the D3100 pretty much as I did my Olympus OM-4 back in the day. Pretty simple and with very good results. Another thing: I seem to get a lot more noise in my D300 shots (even at low ISO) than I do with the D3100. Also, the LCD screen on the D3100 is brighter and clearer than on my D300 (I do have an LCD protector on the D300, which may have a detrimental effect). All in all, I would highly recommend the D3100 to anyone, whether starting out or experienced. It has made my shooting simpler and more fun AND produced excellent results. One caveat: after handling the D300 for two years, the smallness of the D3100 took some getting used to. Those with big hands may need to evaluate it it carefully for usability.

Great for a beginner

By Seattleneil from Seattle, WA on 01/31/2011

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A few things to note up front: I bought this camera on a recommendation from a friend - my first DSLR. Also, instead of the kit lens, I got it with Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 prime lens. This camera is fantastic for a beginner. It has great auto modes, but you can quickly begin using the professional modes (Manual, Aperture, Shutter, Programmed) if you do a little reading (blogs, books) and experimentation. Within a week I left the auto modes behind and haven't looked back. Very light, quiet, high mega pixels, good ISO and white balance ranges for different situations, and access to some of Nikon's really nice lenses (DX). Battery life has been excellent for me, though I'll get an extra battery for longer field trips. Haven't used the video much, but the quality is amazing. Only drawback is the sound, which is not stereo. Why have HD video and 1960s sound? I don't get it. But otherwise, and amazing camera. No regrets.

Trouble out-of-the-box

By fotobean from Sacramento, CA on 01/29/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I returned my D3100 right away because the camera and kit lens couldn't focus on anything at any setting (even AF) and while talking with Nikon Tech Help, there was a problem with being unable to get the camera out of ISO 3200. Doesn't bode well for this 40+year photographer. Now I'm using a D5000 and find the same problem. Not to rag on all of the camera manufacturers but when did they agree that a still camera had to be a video camera, Ipod touch, HD/3D television and smart phone and GPS tracking device all rolled into one device. Personally, I would rather go back to film and either my Canon F1, or Leica M, or Nikon F3, The reason being is their all manual and every lens was a great tool. Nothing mediocre or does so much it can't just be what it was intended to do - take great shots. On to these mediocre lenses designated with so many acronyms they're such a waste of money and resources. And to add insult to injury - no honest reviews - just more marketing hype. Shame on all of you.

Disappointing camera

By anonymous from Undisclosed on 01/27/2011

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The video in this camera is poor and taking photos with the viewfinder is sluggish. I don't see the need for such extra features if they don't work well. My main gripe is with the fact that this camera chooses high ISO if you leave the ISO setting on AUTO. I liked my D40 better.

Hadn't shot on an SLR in years.. Used a couple pocket flash cams, but about the time my buddy got his D90 i knew i wanted back in! When i saw the specs and actually held the D3100 in my hands, i knew it was the camera to get me back into SLR cameras. From the moment it came out of the box i have loved working with my D3100!! The controls are fairly intuitive, the displays are all easy to read, and the images come out great! I've named her Athenas...

More than I expected

By John M. from Sioux Falls, SD on 11/26/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have always wanted to own a Nikon camera, the opportunity presented itself and now I do. I have owned a digital camera for the past 9 years. However, what a difference there is between 4.1 MP and 12+ MP. The D3100 has many more features than my old camera and I have experimented with many of them. I have found that right now it is best to keep it set to Auto although I plan to use the various options in the future. We recently completed a cruise through the Eastern Caribbean and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my shots were right on the first time. The pictures from my point of view were great, now I can concentrate on composition and take even better pictures. The ability to take continuous pictures with little effort is a real plus. The power consumption is very stingy. I took 250 pictures over the course of a week and only had to charge the battery once after 5 days. If I remember to turn the camera off after shooting I will probably have better battery life. I use the viewfinder mostly which probably accounts for low battery usage. I installed a memory card with a 32GB card and was surprised to see I had space enough for 12K+ pictures at the settings I selected. My next tasks will be to use the movie feature and combine movies and still photos with my photo software and produce family DVDs of our adventures. All I can say is the D3100 is easy to use and with practice, I will be able to use many of the advanced features with ease.

Spend a little more and get the D7000

By Byrdsmom from Florida on 11/15/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this because I am very interested in learning photography but soon realized that too many items such as flashes and such are not fully compatible with the D3100. That is my fault for not researching, but if you are really considering being serious about learning, spend a little more and get the D600. I got one two months after the D3100 and I could not be happier with it. If you are just looking for a great camera for travel photos and want to add some lenses, this is the one for you.

D3100 is loaded!

By Nikon Guy from Rhinelander, WI on 11/11/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been using a Nikon D50 for five years and wanted to step up to more mega pixels, live view and have movie capabilities. This camera does not disappoint. Very comfortable in your hand, easy to navigate through the menus, and loaded with extras like a wide range of iso settings, filter effects, monochrome pictures, etc. This camera is perfect for someone new to a digital slr but also provides a wide range of options for an advanced amateur which I consider myself.Nikon has come up with a great camera competitively priced.

Best Entry Level DSLR PERIOD!

By NikonCoupleSoFlo from Hollywood, FL on 11/10/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We originally purchased a D5000 and loved the camera so much that we decided to buy another DSLR since we are taking photography classes. I let my wife keep the D5000 and it is by all means a great camera. I took the D3100 and even though I do not have as many settings IN camera I feel the Image Quality is substantially better than the D5000. You can check out our photostream on Flickr - NikonCoupleSoFlo and compare both cameras.

Finally got my 1st DSLR!

By streetmusic from Kentucky on 10/22/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon

Love it!

By AC from VA on 10/12/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I am really enjoying this camera! I tend to shy away from using live view on it though. I can't pinpoint why exactly...I just doesn't feel comfortable..if that makes any sense at all. I can do without though...I like using the viewfinder for my photography. I have been using it with the kit lens and the photos are coming out great. The camera is easy to learn and the battery life is excellent!

YES YES AND YES

By Orlando Director from Orlando, FL on 10/05/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I just received my new Nikon this past weekend and had a shoot the night I got it. I wanted it for the versatility of shooting 1080 24fps and to take great photographs. I'm a director and producer and I shoot short films and music videos. After charging the battery and an hour of schooling myself on it I was off to shoot. Let me just say that the promotional video truly sells this camera. The video quality is AMAZING. It looks like 35mm film and NOT video. I highly recommend this camera for the trained professional or for a family that wants the best images of their families events. You can't beat what you get for the price. The very first test shot I did was of my dog. She loves to pose for the camera. I shot this inside my home with no flash and existing light.

HD Video

By macnimation from Undisclosed on 08/20/2010

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I hope Nikon have improved their HD Video and this is the first of the improved cameras. I shoot D300s cameras and unless the camera is solid on a tripod and does not pan or zoom, the video is poor. Hopefully the "Jelly" effect has been resolved.
