The Numark Fusion 494 definitely makes a good cd dj starter kit, and is an excellent value.
The two Axis 4 cd players are definitely high quality dj cd players, pretty full-featured (8/16% pitch range, multifunction jog wheel, tap bpm counter, loop support). The feature set is more than sufficient for any new dj who wants to learn to beatmatch and still have a kit worth keeping for a long while. If you were to buy two Axis 4's individually, it'd cost about the same as the entire Fusion494 kit, so basically you're getting the mixer, headphones, case, and cables for free -- nice!
That said, the dm950 mixer is somewhat bare-bones. The mixer is a standard 2-channel setup, no bells and whistles; you won't find midrange EQ, kill switches, fader start, level/clipping leds, extra output for recording, etc. Seems perfectly fine for learning on, you can always replace it later (mixers aren't too pricey anyway, compared to cd players or turntables.) Same deal with the headphones, they're functional and fine for learning, just not top end.
The carrying case is really great, solid and a perfect fit, well-made, sturdy, and looks great. Good for taking your setup on the road with you.
All in all, this is a great investment if you're just starting out. You won't need to upgrade/replace the CD players for a long time, if ever, unless you eventually want to go all-out and buy top-of-the-line ones with a spinning platter emulating vinyl and whatnot. Fusion 494 is a great buy. (worth noting: The Fusion 222 also seems comparably good; that kit's around the same price, and has a better mixer, but has Axis 2's instead of Axis 4's. Axis 2's don't have looping or jogwheel fastward/rewind tho, so factor that into your decision. either kit seems good. anyway I'm very happy w/ my 494!)
