Great compatibility, support, and value

By PGDP Verified Reviewer from Austin, TX on 02/01/2007

Pros:

Excellent Manual, Nice Features, Fantastic Value, Excellent Compatibility, Great Support

Best Uses:

Upgrade, Home

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This inexpensive remote and RF link replaced a slew of expensive devices to integrate a Dish Network 622 PVR with an Olevia 427V TV in a far-away room. The manual is outstanding and the US-based support personnel cheerfully email upgrade codes for a wide range of devices not supported out-of-the-box. Hobbyists can get an inexpensive DiyGadget JP1 adapter to configure everything with a Windows PC. The ergonomics may not be as strong as dedicated OEM remotes, but this is about as good as youll get with a general-purpose, learning remote.

"If you want an RF ...

By Michael S Verified Reviewer from Undisclosed on 03/24/2006

If you want an RF capable learning universal remote, this seems to be to be a good deal. I use three of them now, one on each level of my house. The RF ability means I can control my receiver, DVD player, and DirecTV Tivo from any room of my house despite their being in the living room in a closed cabinet with wooden (not glass) doors. The RF connection isn't terribly strong but I've managed to get it to work reliably by having the receiver box on top of (rather than inside) the living room cabinet, with the included IR extender inside the cabinet, with a small mirror behind it to reflect the IR towards the sensors of all 3 components. The human factors / ergonomics of this remote leave plenty to be desired - for example all the frequently used play / pause etc controls are down near the bottom, making it impossible to hold the remote in a comfortable position and use them at the same time. However, I don't think there's currently a lot of competition out there that is significantly better, especially with the RF abilities and in this price range. If this remote could be given a usability makeover, rearranging the buttons etc, it could become a really fantastic universal remote. Overall I would definitely recommend this to you if you want the RF ability and value having plenty of flexibility in terms of teaching the remote how to imitate your devices' remotes, upgrading via phone, macro buttons, etc.
