This product is great. I really like having a convenient indoor display of the weather outside. An additional use is for travel-- whenever my wife and I travel, we end up disagreeing over the a/c or heat settings in our hotel room (the thermostats are often tricky and rarely accurate). Having something like this product with us gives us an accurate and objective measure of a setting that we can both live with. And it is incorporated into a handy alarm clock that never needs setting. The clock is so accurate that we use it as a time reference for setting our watches and other clocks. The weather forcast also helps. It is easier than trying to catch the forcast on TV. I also use the temperature alarm to monitor the baby's nursery when we use an electric space heater there. You could also use it to monitor for freezing conditions near vulnerable plumbing or excessive moisture in a damp basement. And finally, the indoor humitidy display helps us regulate our A/C settings in the summer and lets us know when to humidify in the winter.
This unit works great and I find it to be a huge convenience. I would buy another one if I ever lost it. There are fancier units on the market and there are also simpler, less expensive ones. This one is a good value because it incorporates an abundance of useful features while remaining reasonably priced. The price is very reasonable if you consider the various devices this can replace (Atomic dual alarm clock, indoor and outdoor recording thermometers and hygrometers, recording barometer). Having all of these functions combined into one device is a real convenience, especially when travelling. And since the clock is self-setting and self-adjusting for DST, you never have to fiddle with it. I have never had a problem with reception, as it seems to work all over my house, even with the antenna in the down position.
One thing I would add is the following travel feature: I would like a way to deactivate the buttons so it can be packed in a suitcase without any worry of running the battery down with the backlight or changing the settings. But I could probably find a box to pack it in. An alternative for travel would be to take the remote sensor instead of the main unit. It only has the temp and humitity display, but it is very small and has no external buttons.
Other quibbles: When viewing temp and hygro readings on the remote sensor channels, you have to page through the local reading plus all 3 channels even if they are unused and therefore blank. Also this produces a beep at each button press, which I do not like when the baby is sleeping. I would prefer a way to toggle between just two channels or just the active channels.
Overall it is a great unit and a good value.
- It comes with 4 AA batteries in the main unit and 2 AA batteries for the remote sensor.
- The stands on both units are removable.
- The clock automatically adjusts for Daylight Savings Time, which can be a slight problem if you live in an area that does not observe DST. You could select a different timezone during the summer or the automatic-time-setting feature can be disabled which also disables the DST adjustment.
