Nice mprovement over built-in speakers

By Athena from California on 03/05/2011

Pros:

Much Better Than Built-in Speakers, Wireless Subwoofer, Easy To Use

Cons:

Poor Sound Controls, Only One Hdmi Input

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This sound bar added some badly needed depth to our new 3D Plasma HDTV. Since the TV is a 2010 model, the ARC channel can be used for the Blu-ray player and the sound bar and Viera Link combines all boxes into on remote control for basic functions. Progressing from the "that's nice" setup phase though, there are some significant deficiencies that weigh against the overall experience: * There's only one HDMI input so we had to choose between the Blu-ray player and HD television. We're paying a surcharge each month for quality TV and can't get full benefit from because the sound bar doesn't accommodate it. * "Clear Mode Dialog" helps but the unit really needs a center speaker clearer projection of voices. * Using the sound bar as the default speakers means that we have less control over the actual quality of the sound. The rudimentary 3 level subwoofer control is not at all sufficient. More importantly, there is no "volume leveler" so we're now adjusting sound constantly. We looked at a number of add-on speakers from Panasonic and other vendors but they all seem to be out of sync with our needs and overpriced for what they deliver. None of the "in a box" solutions included a 3D Blu-ray player (which we already had anyway) and we didn't want large obtrusive speakers; we just wanted better sound with minimal installation hassle. We did have to place the TV on a 2 1/2 riser to avoid blocking the 3D emitters but other than that, the installation was quite easy. The wireless subwoofer on this model is quite nice; it's surprising/disappointing that there isn't an optional kit to add some wireless rear speakers.

Great fix for Plasma sound

By Rowdy from Lititz, PA on 09/13/2010

Pros:

Easy To Use

Cons:

Expensive

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My TC-P46G10 has looked great from the get go. However, I have suffered with less than decent sound from TV speakers. The NEW SC HT500 sound bar is a super fix. I can now truly enjoy the Pandora feature and blast my BluRays. I recommend the 500 for the wireless subwoofer. I can't say that this system is equal to a 7 or 5 speaker surround system. But for money spent ease of use (Non ARC TV) this works well. I am happy about using Viera Link, saves on remotes!
