Attractive Design, Fast Setup, Simple Controls, Great Picture
First off, this is a good looking display, with clean lines and an easy to use stand. The hidden speakers contribute to the sleek look. Picture quality is incredible. The image is sharp, the colors pop and there's great shadow depth. The THX picture mode is the only disappointment. I understand that the viewing experience is subjective so all I can do is give my two cents. The display has five picture modes. After choosing one you can make adjustment to certain settings to dial in the picture as you like. THX mode tries to create a cinematic experience when watching movies. The overall effect is too dark for my tastes and is only watchable if the room is pitch black. The contrast and color saturation are also a bit low. THX mode seems to work best on HiDef programing with high-key lighting. I found the Custom mode works best for Blu-rays. After making a few changes to the picture settings I put in Casino Royale and was blown away. Here is the setup I used in Custom mode: Picture +90, Brightness +50, Color +37, Tint 0, Sharpness +50, Color Temp - Normal, Black Level - Light, HD Size - Size 2. The colors are more saturated than THX mode while maintaining natural skin tones and there is greater shadow detail. This Panasonic TH-58PZ800U, when paired with a booming surround sound system, creates a more involving and captivating movie experience than the one offered at you local cinema.
