Good Combination of Design and Features

By samdan from Dayton, OH, USA on 08/19/2015

Pros:

Long Zoom, Dual Grip, Inexpensive, Realistic Color

Cons:

Flimsy Battery Door

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had been looking for a long-zoom camera to use when I didn't want to bring out my interchangeable lens system. I also wanted one with an EVF, as I don't always want to look through a 3" screen to compose a shot. This Samsung is pretty much what I've been looking for. The EVF, while not quite as precise as my other mirrorless camera, is still good enough to accurately compose a picture while also providing camera setting information. The grip design makes it very easy to hold the camera steady, which is important at the longer focal lengths. In fact, I have been placing my left hand on the part of the grip that facilitates portrait shooting while maintaining a normal hold with my right hand. It works for me. I have had little trouble keeping the camera steady at the longer end of the zoom range. The controls are well placed. Some folks might rue the lack of a sensor that automatically switches between the EVF and the screen, but I don't mind too much. I have found that if you move your hand around in playback mode, you won't unintentionally activate the EVF and lose your place in viewing pictures. You do, however, have to toggle the switch to activate the main screen before playback. Other camera settings are plentiful enough to give you control over your pictures, but easy enough to find and use. The camera operation is fairly intuitive and easy to learn. Image quality is pretty good. I have seen some surprising detail in some shots. I have taken some good pictures of the sky/sunset at the wide end of the zoom, almost getting a fisheye effect on one shot. At longer zoom ranges, it is best to let the camera pre-focus before pressing the shutter halfway to lock focus. It is also advisable to put the focus point on the brightest part of the image when focusing. This will keep the camera from overexposing the image. Even so, I have found it necessary to stop down the exposure value at times. But the one aspect of performance that has surprised me the most is indoor flash photography. I was absolutely amazed at the level of detail, reproduction of color, and lack of glare of the pictures I took with the flash. Impressive! The only reasons I would give this camera a four-star rating is that, for one, the battery door seems a bit flimsy---you can feel it move when handling the camera, enough to think it might come loose at times. Secondly, I have noticed that the grip becomes slightly warm after a few minutes of use. It's not enough to make you think the plastic would melt, but it feels sort of like putting your hand on the forehead of someone who is running a temperature. I am guessing the image processing unit is generating a bit of heat that can be felt after some extended use. Overall, I like this camera for its combination of design and features. I will soon make use of the wireless capabilities, which will probably endear me even more to it. Even though some might think the looks are unconventional, I like the dual-grip feature. It suits me just fine. I can recommend this Samsung to anyone looking for a second camera that has the range to shoot wide or long-zoom shots without the need to frequently change lenses.

good and bad

By Luvmycamera2 from Edison, NJ, USA on 08/10/2015

Pros:

Durable, Realistic Color, Bright Display

Cons:

Too Big

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I found this camera on line and i immediatley bought it. I didn't want a dslr worry about carrying and changing lenses. This camera ahas a great optical and didital zoom. Their suggestion is utalize a tripod when zooming. Take their advice, use a tripod. the slightest movement creates a blurry picture. all the digital features are there. Reading the manual once or twice teaches you enough to get started. The only problem I have is that sometimes it's hard to remember where certain features are. This is not a pocket camera therefore the weight is a little heavy if you're traveling and carrying it around your neck. I have an Iphone and using the WiFi to syn with the phone is a little tricky. There is also 2 shutter buttons and 2 zoom switches allowing vertical and horizontal pictures to be taken easily.Overall I give this camera a thumbs up. I've already talked my nephew into purchasing one too.

This camera has some nice features and lacks some as well

By MacroRB from Rhode Island on 07/26/2015

Pros:

Durable, Inexpensive, Bright Display, Realistic Color

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

First and for most, this camera fits nice in your hand. It takes beautiful pictures. The one thing I didn't like about it was, some of the upload options are not supported any longer by Samsung. For instance, you can't upload to Drop Box or Picasa. On the contrary, who would want to do that anyway. You can however upload to Facebook and YouTube which is a plus. I would like to see in the next firmware update to be able to upload to OneDrive or GoogleDrive. Being able to transfer files to your smart phone is a nice feature however cumbersome. What I mean by that, is just an extra step involved. I think over all, it is a nice camera and I would recommend it. Happy shooting!
