Only Buy for Sound

By BuyerBeWary from Sunny California on 04/06/2010

Bottom Line:

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Apparently my language wasn't suitable or appropriate the first time around, so here goes again... The sound and video of this product is awesome. If there were separate ratings for hardware & software, I'd rate the hardware as 'excellent' down the board. However, since there isn't and I had to base my ratings on the UI and software, this is why I had to give the product an 'Average' rating(s). Again, the audio output of this device is awesome. I wish I could say the same of the UI/software. Apparently it must be difficult to marry great hardware with decent software; unfortunately this product underscores this point emphatically. The Emodio software that Samsung recommends you use with this product is awful. Synchronization doesn't work as it should and the other features are less than winning.. Having discovered this I tried 3rd party applications and they too didn't work very well. Learning from experience, the best way to get your media onto this device is to literally copy and paste and hope that your album art for your music, if you have it, transfers with it. Moving on, let me address the 'firmware' - the previous model had on the touchscreen volume control and why this model doesn't have volume control capabilities on the touch screen is an enigma to me. I get that a 'horizontal' swipe is programmed to do certain things and is a wonderful option, but once you're in a music track, why is it not possible to engineer a 'vertical' swipe for volume adjustment? It's ridiculous not having a basic feature as volume control not available on the touchscreen. The touchscreen itself is somewhat lacking too. Sometimes it's too responsive and overly sensitive, other times it's barely responsive, dead. It would be nice to have a touch screen that works fluidly 90% of the time. By the way, keep the widgets clean and simple and keep the layout on the screen clean and simple too. Having a 'flower' on the layout is pointless as is the 'cup of coffee.' Avoid the 'gimmick.' Unless those icons serve an actual purpose, don't include, it's extraneous and tacky. Also if you're going to put a 'mixer' as a touch screen audio sound option, please space out the mixing 'bars/levers' farther apart because unless you have super thin fingers, it's difficult to move any of the levers individually and independently of an ajdacent 'lever.' Next point of contention - Bluetooth File Transfer - Great feature to offer provided that it works adequately. Point, I tried to transfer via bluetooth to another YP-P3 a single music file; you'd think it would be easy and seamless, wrong. First each unit had difficulty recognizing the other and once it finally did and if it actually worked, the transfer rate was super slow - Don't offer a feature if it's too difficult to set up, operate and function. Other than that the bluetooth works great for other operations. A feature missing that would be nice to have, an accelerometer. Last bone of contention, why does everyone feel the need to create proprietary connection cables? Would it have been so hard to use mini-usb? Now that I've finished with the negatives - To reiterate: here's why I bought this in the first place - THE SOUND! There is no other PMP out there that surpasses this in pure sound quality. It's just beautiful to listen to, but again not having onscreen volume adjustment is a huge negative. Back to the positives - built in microphone and audio recording is a nice touch. The industrial design of the product is beautiful and is comfortable to hold. The Gorilla Glass used for the screen is a great choice too and watching video is clean and nce. The fact that you can use this PMP as a generic storage device is perfect for adding/sharing content on any other PC computer is terrific . In summation, Samsung has done a wonderful job in creating a PMP that puts out excellent sound and video. If their engineers could only put out a better UI, then this would be, hands down, the greatest Windows based PMP on the market. Buy this product if you want superior sound and can tolerate a subpar, UI. Thanks for reading and tolerating my poor grammatical syntax.
