I use this for recording voice lectures in a large audience setting where I am some distance from the speaker. Yet this device is able to capture the audio and listening to the playback makes it seem like you were right back in the audience, particularly at the XHQ setting.
I have noticed that every person that coughs or makes any extraneous noise is also picked up, but this shouldn't detract from the recordings.
The only downside is the limited memory at the XHQ setting quality. This only allows for 4 hours and 25 minutes of stero recording time with the internal 256 MB of memory. I would advise getting a much higher capacity miniSD card to allow for longer recording times. I currently use a 2 GB card that allows for almost 36 hours of recording at the XHQ level.
I have only two complaints against the unit: 1) the number of files that each folder can hold is stated as 99 for each folder, for atotal of 396 file recordings. Yet I have had trouble when recording a lecture days worth of talks (never exceeding the total of 99 files per folder) but the unit tends to refuse to allow recording any more files even when the total of ALL files in number is less than 99! This has led to some recordings being missed or dropped, having the introduction or beginning missing. If this happens, I just switch to the internal memory folders which allows the unit to keep recording as it sees the two memory locations as seperate.
2) At times I have come accross a finiky or somewhat tempermental POWER/FORWARD/FAST FORWARD switch, that would not turn on even after multiple tries. It has since gone away and has not appeared since, and I may just chalk this up to its age, as it is almost 5 years old now and I use it every weekend for about a half hour and during the week on-and-off for about an hour.
Now I also seem to have another problem which has recently cropped up. The memory card now only reads a total of 11 hours after I last copied and deleated the files to my computer, even though it used to read more than 35. My computer reads the card when empty as having 2 GBs. Then when I finished another few weeks of recording, and I copied the files, errased the card and opened it back up in the recorder, it now only reads 8 hours 50 minutes. So it seems that the memory card is either failing or the unit can no longer read the whole thing.
I want to try another miniSD card but since they are so hard to find now, I will have to switch to microSD card and a mini adapter. I got a kit that came with two 4 GB microSDHC cards with the adapter, but when I inserted it into the recorder, the unit would not turn on, no doubt because of the unrecognized HC (High Capacity) standard.
I have to say the designers did a great job on the built in USB port that is attached. It comes in as a VERY VERY handy stand that you can use to point the mics at your sound source. It is quite unique; I have never seen this on any other recorder for any amount of money! Kudos!!
I highly recommend this recorder for the sound quality alone but when you add the USB/tripod stand, it's even more impressive. Excellent!!!
