This phone has some very nice features - especially the ability to import Outlook contacts. But if you have another phone, fax, answering machine on the line, this unit will not recognize if the line is in use. Basic oversight, and Siemen's attitude is 'we designed it this way, so it is correct', even though every phone should be able to recognize an off-hook condition. I contacted them, back and forth, about 10 times, with them suggesting various ridiculous things; including line filters, contacting the manufacturer of my other phones (which all work fine together). Finally they said 'we only tested the SL785 to work with other Gigaset phones. Well, guess what? If you put two SL785 base stations on the same phone line (you might decide to do this if you find that 6 handsets is not enough - and you can pair a 78H handset with up to 4 bases), they don't recognize if the other base has a handset using the line. So they don't even work with each other (no surprise). If you need 6 or fewer handsets, will never accidentally pick up on a fax machine or other phone on your line, and don't need great range, then this could be a great unit for you.

Gigaset SL785

Cons:

Not Very Mac Friendly

Describe Yourself:

Quality Oriented

Best Uses:

Everyday Use

Primary use:

Personal

Bottom Line:

Nice phone, solid, beautifully designed object. However, owning a macintosh, Siemens' Quicksync for mac software isn't great. Contacts come through with area codes duplicated, and I haven't been able to download any ringtones using Quicksync. The included ringtones are pretty lame. I'm sure Siemens will get their act together and upgrade Quicksync at some point.

Okay... First... Great phone.. Cant say that enough. But.. I wish it had the capability to link to cell phone via bluetooth since it already has bluetooth features. Would be nice to come home and have cell automatically transfered to home phone since cell service in my house sucks. Second.. Setting up call ID and answering machine was confusing. I only glanced through the manual and didnt see anything about why the features werent working from the start. Didnt work until I updated via my home computer. Maybe I missed something but anyways thats how I got it to work. Last... This phone is made like a cell phone... So plan on having to get used to some things. I dont mean that in a bad way its just not what I was used to in a regular cordless phone. But again... Im very pleased with the quality and service from this phone!
