I've had this for about a year. So far, the hard drive, both cooling fans and 2 cameras have failed. Of the 8 I only installed 3 of the cameras that came with the system. The quality of the Pro-580 cameras are OK for close ups. I wasn't happy with the Pro-580's so I installed several Pro-780's and Pro-781's. I think that the video quality is pretty comparable to other systems. You can't read a license plate at 20 feet and it's hard to recognize a face at that distance as well. I guess that's just consumer grade quality. The most annoying part is the interface on the box. Compared to all the other software people use on a day to day basis, this looks like it came out of a high school remedial programming class. The web interface is ok. I find the video playback to be slow. If you want to check several hours of video, be prepared to sit there for a long time. Frequently the DVR will not be accessible over the internet. Rebooting the system, rebooting the router, etc. has no affect. It will just randomly start working again. I am currently looking for a replacement to this. Improvements that would help: 1. I would like to be able to record uncompressed video. Even if this requires more HDD's )I have 2, 2TB drives in mine now) or decreases the playback record (# of days stored). I had a car prowler a couple months ago look directly at the camera at about 15 feet and he was unrecognizable. It was useless to for the police. 2. Allow for faster playback. A scroll bar that I can drag through the day would be nice. Having to download file after file is too tedious and time consuming. 3. Update the software so it's easier to use.
