Some good things don't change!

By Simurgh from Tirana, Albania on 01/27/2010

I bought my first laptop in the early 90s, and always used Toshiba Satellites. Why did I buy this one? My old 1405-S171 (7 years old, still going strong, USB 2.0 ports only on an additional PC card) is a little slow now, and I wanted to switch to Windows 7. I am still using it for some programs not running on a 64-bit computer. This U505 had some problems at the beginning when the display didn't come on after stand-by or hibernation, but within a week of mentioning it on the laptop forum, a BIOS update was sent around which took care of the problem. Now I am happy using this slick new device in eco-mode!

be aware of 32/ 64 bit

By pabo from NYC on 01/26/2010

I bought a 64 bit system without really realizing it or knowing the implications. While a 64bit system better utilizes a 4GB working memory, some older software won't run. My scanner and storage hard drive did, and my printer had a 64 bit driver online, but my very old version of Adobe Photoshop, written in 16 bit days, and working on my last, 32 bit Win XP system, isn't supported by Adobe for 64 bit. It won't even load. 32 Bit might have been better for me for that reason. Apart from that Im mostly pleased with my laptop. I'm still getting accustomed to the new touchpad features, and have trouble while typing or scrolling with accidental activations. I may buy an optical mouse for home use if my manipulations don't get better. I chose a smaller screen size for better laptop portability, and bought a supplemental large screen for photoshop work and watching DVD's, and that is working well.
