This is strictly used as a handset extension to other Uniden phone bases, in particular the WX1477 waterproof phone. The owner's manual does not give correct, complete or accurate setup instructions for this product. You will be frustrated when trying to get this thing activated, or 'registered' as Uniden describes it. Unfortunately, Uniden's rude customer service personnel, on three subsequent calls, was uninformed as to the operations of this handset, and I was placed on lengthy hold before being misinformed each time. The Uniden customer service call is a waste of your time. Ignore the Owner's manual, depress the 'handset registration' key on the bottom of the base until the light flashes, then press # on the TWX-977 handset and it might fire up. Good luck.
As an added annoyance, you won't like having to redial incoming numbers out of your area code, rather than just pulling them up as you can on most phones and pressing send. This phone is NOT automatic dial-to-caller ID number, like any good phone would be. You must dial using "1" before the area code. Have scratch paper handy when you take your voice messages, to jot down the complete number. Saving them on the handset serves no purpose other than as a visual memo.
