Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Straightforward connections. Very easy to operate. I can now switch between two DVD's thats connected to the receiver (receiver component video out to Sherwood A/V in)and HD DVD which is connected to HDMI of the switcher using my own remote. Yes, It can be controlled by a universal remote. It does not upconvert video resolution but it does upconvert component to HDMI. So now, I have only one cable from the switcher to the display which is neat. One more thing this gadget is just priced right though it looks more expensive.

"I was looking for an inexpensive device to upconvert my video sources to HDMI - and avoid having to upgrade my AV processor. The Sherwood HSB-6501 does this perfectly, as well as giving you the ability to switch between two HDMI sources and your Component Video source. The only problem you may run into is that the input resolution MUST be 480p or better. Any source at 480i or lower will cause your display to just show black (A problem I am still having with my DVD player). Sherwood tech support responded to my email in one day. Also - if your HDMI signal is going straight to your TV, there is also a TOSLink output to run back to your home theater system for surround sound. For the price, I don't know what other options you have than to buy this unit."
